As we all know, since the invention of telephone by Bell, it has brought much convenience as well as change to our daily life. Today, telephone plays such a vital role in our daily life that we rely heavily on telephone to communicate with the outside world and we can’t live without it for a single day. Spring Festival （春节）
The oldest and most important festival in China is the Spring Festival, more commonly known in the West as Chinese New Year. Like all Chinese festivals, the date of the new year is determined by the lunar (农历) calendar rather than the Western calendar.
Preparations for the New Year Festival start during the last few days of the last moon. Houses are thoroughly
cleaned, debts repaid, hair cut and new clothes bought. Doors are decorated with vertical scrolls of characters on red paper whose texts seek good luck and praise nature, this practice stemming from the hanging of peach-wood charms to keep away ghosts and evil spirits.
On New Year's Eve houses are brightly lit and a large family dinner is served. In the south of China sticky-sweet glutinous rice pudding called NianGao is served, while in the north the steamed dumpling JiaoZi is popular. Most celebrating the festival stay up till midnight, when fireworks are lit, to drive away evil spirits. New Years day is often spent visiting neighbors, family and friends.
Lantern Festival (元宵节)
The Lantern Festival falls on the 15th day of the 1st lunar month. “Guessing lantern riddles ”(猜灯谜)is an essential part of the Festival. Lantern owners write riddles on a piece of paper and post them on the lanterns. If visitors have solutions to the riddles, they can pull the paper out and go to the lantern owners to check their answer. If they are right, they will get a little gift.
People will eat Yuanxiao, or rice dumplings, on this day, so it is also called the “Yuanxiao Festival.”Yuanxiao also has another name, tangyuan. It is small dumpling balls made of glutinous(黏的，胶质的) rice flour with rose petals, sesame, bean paste, jujube paste, walnut meat, dried fruit, sugar and edible oil as filling. Tangyuan can be boiled, fried or steamed. It tastes sweet and delicious. What’s more, tangyuan in Chinese has a similar pronunciation with “tuanyuan”, meaning reunion. So people eat them t o denote (象征)union, harmony and happiness for the family.
Qingming Festival (清明节)
Qingming Festival (also known as Pure Brightness Festival or Tomb-sweeping Day), which falls on either April 4th or 5th of the solar calendar, is one of the Chinese Twenty-four Solar Terms. From that date temperatures begin to rise and rainfall increases, indicating that it is the crucial time for plowing and sowing in the spring. Qingming Festival therefore has a close relationship with agriculture. However, it is not only a seasonal symbol; it is also a festival of paying respect to the dead, a spring outing, and other activities.
Dragon Boat Festival （端午节）
The Dragon Boat Festival, also called the Duanwu Festival, is celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth month according to the Chinese calendar. For thousands of years, the festival has been marked by eating zongzi and racing dragon boats.
The festival is best known for its dragon-boat races, especially in the southern provinces where there are many rivers and lakes. This regatta（赛舟会）commemorates the death of Qu Yuan , an honest minister who is said to have committed suicide by drowning himself in a river.
Chinese people threw into the water dumpling made of glutinous rice wrapped in bamboo or reed leaves on the day. Therefore the fish would eat the rice rather than the hero poet. This later on turned into the custom of eating Zong Zi.
Mid-Autumn Festival （中秋节）
The joyous Mid-Autumn Festival was celebrated on the fifteenth day of the eighth moon. The Mid-autumn Festival is a little like Thanksgiving. On this day, Chinese families get together. The Chinese believe that the moon is at its largest and brightest. They tell the story about a lady who lived in the moon. They give each other small round moon cake. The moon cakes sometimes look like the round bright moon. Nowadays, the moon cakes are in all kinds of shapes.
