Matrimid ® 5218A Soluble PolyimideGeneral Matrimid® 5218 is a soluble thermoplastic polyimide. It is fully imidizedduring manufacturing, eliminating the need for high temperatureprocessing. Matrimid 5218 is soluble in a variety of common solvents.Evaporation of the solvents leaves a strong, durable, tough coating.Chemical Description Matrimid 5218 is a thermoplastic polyimide based on a proprietary diamine, 5(6)-amino-1-(4' aminophenyl)-1,3,-trimethylindaneAdvantages Fully imidizedDoes not require high temperatures for processingSoluble in a variety of common solventsExcellent adhesionDurable and tough filmsExcellent chemical resistanceVery good thermal properties 100% solid powderApplications High temperature adhesives CompositesTypical Properties Inherent viscosity 1, dl/g 0.62-0.68Volatile content 2, %<0.710.5 in NM Pat 25°C 22 gm sample heated to 260°C for 45 minutesCiba Specialty ChemicalsNorth AmericaPerformancePolymersProduct DataSpecial Features Matrimid 5218 is a soluble thermoplastic polyimide. There is nopolyamic acid precursor in the product that would require a hightemperature cure to convert to the imide form. This lack of amic acidgroups allows relatively simple processing compared to conventionalpolyamic acid precursor polyimides. For example, when solutions ofMatrimid 5218 are used for coating applications, the substrate needonly be heated to a temperature and for a time sufficient to thoroughlyremove the solvent. When the solvent has been removed, a strong, durable polymide coating remains. By contrast, the more commonpolyamic acid precursor polyimides must be heated to hightemperatures for long periods to convert the polyimide structure. This"curing" process evolves a water by-product and makes it very difficultto form pinhole-free coatings or void-free parts from those materials. No water is evolved in using Matrimid 5218 because no curing(imidization) occurs during processing.Matrimid 5218 has very unusual and desirable properties. Its highthermal stability and high glass transition temperature make Matrimid5218 suitable for adhesive applications as well as matrix resin forcomposite applications. Figure 1 shows the change in modulus versustemperature of a neat resin molding based on Matrimid 5218(Dynamic Mechanical Analysis). Table 1 illustrates the adhesiveproperties of Matrimid 5218 with a variety of substrates.Matrimid 5218 is soluble in many organic solvents and possessesexcellent chemical resistance to water, steam, brine, acids, causticand non-polar organic solvents, unlike other polyimides. As a solublethermoplastic, Matrimid 5218 retains its solubility in certain polarorganic solvents after processing, unless it has been thermally orchemically crosslinked before exposure to these solvents.Matrimid 5218 is soluble in the following solvents. In general, 20percent solutions are possible with these solvents.Methylene chlorideEthylene chlorideChloroformTetrachloroethaneTetrahydrofurane (THF)DioxaneAcetophenoneCyclohexanonem-Cresolg-ButyrolactoneDimethylformamide (DMF)Dimethylacetamide (DMAC)N-methylpyrrolidone (NMP)Table 1Adhesive PropertiesSubstrate AdhesionAluminum3, mirror finish ExcellentAluminum, Alodine treated ExcellentSteel, hot or cold rolled ExcellentStainless steel ExcellentBrass ExcellentTitanium ExcellentSpecial Features (continued)Copper, untreated Good Copper, etched with (NH4)2S2O8Excellent Glass, untreated PoorGlass, aminosilane treated Excellent Ryton® PPS (Phillips) untreated PoorRyton PPS (Phillips) acid etched Excellent Kapton® (Du Pont) untreated PoorKapton (Du Pont) acid etched Excellent3 To obtain excellent adhesion to some aluminum surfaces a surfactant, such as 3M's Fluorad® FC 430, must be added to the polyimide varnish.Mechanical Properties Matrimid 5218 FilmMachine-made film cast from a methylene chloride/Matrimid 5218solution.Final drying temperature240°C by infrared heating rollersFilm thickness 1 mil unorientedTensile strengthat break, ksi12.4at yield, ksi12.6Elongationat break, %48.6at yield, % 6.9Tensile modulus, ksi420Density, g/cc 1.2Refractive index 1.614Coefficient of linearexpansion in/in/°C 2.8 x 10-5Moisture absorption at51% R.H.
