She got out to open a metal gate that blocked her path .That’s when she heard the whistle sounded by the driver of a train. Her Renault Clio was parked across a railway line. Seconds later, she watched the train drag her car almost a kilometre down the railway tracks.Ceely’s near miss made the news because she blamed it on he GPS (导航仪). She had never driven the route before. It was dark and raining heavily. Ceely was relying on her GPS, but it made no mention of the crossing. “I put my complete trust in the device and it led me right into the path of a speeding train,” she told the BBC.Who is to blame here? Rick Stevenson, who tells Ceely’s story in his book When Machines Fail Us, points the finger at the limitations of technology. We put our faith in digital devices, he says, but our digital helpers are too often not up to the job. They are filled with small problems. And it’s not just GPS devices: Stevenson takes us on a tour of digital disasters involving everything from mobile phones to wireless keyboards. The problem with his argument in the book is that it’s not clear why he only focus es on digital technology, while there may be a number of other possible causes. A map-maker might have left the crossing off a paper map. Maybe we should blame Ceely for not paying attention. Perhaps the railway authorities are at fault for poor singalling system. Or maybe someone has studied the relative dangers and worked out that there really is something specific wrong with the GPS equipment. But Stevenson doesn’t say. It’s a problem that runs through the book. In a section on cars, Stevenson gives an account of the advanced techniques that criminals use to defeat computer-based locking systems for cars. He offers two independent sets of figures on car theft; both show a small rise in some parts of the country. He says that once again not all new locks have proved reliable. Perhaps, but maybe it’s also due to the shortage of policemen on the streets. Or changing social circumstances. Or some combination of these factors. The game between humans and their smart devices is amusing and complex. It is shaped by economics and psychology and the cultures we live in. Somewhere in the mix of those forces there may be a way for a wiser use of technology. If there is such a way, it should involve more than just an awareness of the shortcomings of our machines. After all, we have lived with them for thousands of years. They have probably been fooling us for just as long.41.What did Paula Ceely think was the cause of her accident?A. She was not familiar with the road.B. It was dark and raining heavily then.C. The railway workers failed to give the signal.D. Her GPS device didn’t tell her about the crossing.42.The phrase “near miss” (Paragraph 2) can best be replaced by______.A. close hitB. heavy lossC. narrow escapeD. big mistake43. Which of the following would Rick Stevenson most probably agree with?A. Modern technology is what we can’t live without.B. Digital technology often falls short of our expectation.C. Digital devices are more reliable than they used to be.D. GPS error is not the only cause for C eely’s accident.44. In the writer’s opinion,Stevenson’s argument is _______.A. one-sidedB. reasonableC. puzzlingD. well-based45. What is the real concern of the writer of this article?A. The major causes of traffic accidents and car thefts.B. The relationship between human and technology.C. The shortcomings of digital devices we use.D. The human unawareness of technical problems.BB46. What does the word “pump”mean in “He ran in every five m inutes to pump me about the case”?A. Talk with.B. Ask for information.C. Listen to.D. Provide with evidence.47. When Sally says “The TV pro g ram kept pumping out commercials”, she may be______.A. excitedB. interestedC. annoyedD. worried48. When Sylvia says “His speech was OK but it had no real punch”, she thinks it wasnot_____.A. fluent and impressiveB. logical and movingC. informative and significantD. interesting and powerfulCIn the more and more competitive service industry, it is no longer enough to promise customer satisfaction. Today, customer “delight” is what companies are trying to achieve in order to keep and increase market share. It is accepted in the marketing industry, and confirmed by a number of researchers, that customers receiving good service will promote business by telling up to 12 other people; those treated badly tell tales of woe to up to 20 people. Interestingly, 80 percent of people who feel their complaints are handled fairly will stay loyal.New challenges for customer care have come when people can obtain goods and services through telephone call centers and the Internet. For example, many companies now have to invest (投资) a lot of money in information technology and staff training in order to cope with the “phone rage”---- caused by delays in answering calls, being cut off in mid-conversation or left waiting for long periods.“Many people do not like talking to machines,” says Dr, Storey, Senior Lecturer in Marketing at City University Business School. “Banks, for example, encourage staff at call centers to use customer data to establish instant and good relationship with then. The aim is to make the customer feel they know you and that you can trust them – the sort of comfortable feelings people have during face-to-face chats with their local branch manager.”Recommended ways of creating customer delight include: under-promising andover-delivering (saying that a repair will be carried out within five hours, but getting it done within two) replacing a faulty product immediately; throwing in a gift voucher (购物礼券)as an unexpected “thank you” to regular customers; and always returning calls, even when they are complaints.Aiming for customer delight is all very well, but if services do not reach the high level promised, disappointment or worse will be the result. This can be eased by offering an apology and an explanation of why the service did not meet usual standards with empathy (for example, “I know how you must feel”), and possible solutions (replacement, compensation or whatever fairness suggests best meets the case).Airlines face some of the toughest challenges over customer care. Fierce competition has convinced them at that delighting passengers is an important marketing tool, while there is great potential for customer anger over delays caused by weather, unclaimed luggage and technical problems. For British Airways staff, a winning telephone style is considered vital in handling the large volume of calls about bookings and flight times. They are trained to answer quickly, with their names, job title and a “we are here to help” attitude. The company has invested heavily in information technology to make sure that information is available instantly on screen.British Airways also says its customer care policies are applied within the company and staff are taught to regard each other as customers requiring the highest standards of service.Customer care is obviously here to stay and it would be a foolish company that used sloganssuch as “we do as we please”. On the other hand, the more customers are promised, the greater the risk of disappointment.50. We can learn from Paragraph 2 that _______.A. complaining customers are hard to satisfyB. unsatisfied customers receive better serviceC .satisfied customers catch more attention D. well-treated customers promote business51. The writer mentions “phone rage”(Paragraph 3)to show that ________.A. customers often use phones to express their angerB. people still prefer to buy goods onlineC. customer care becomes more demandingD. customers rely on their phones to obtain services52. What does the writer recommend to to create customer delight?A. Calling customers regular.B. Gibing a “thank you “note..C. Delivering a quicker service.D. Promising more gifts.53. If a manager should show his empathy (Paragraph 6), what would be probably say?A. “I know how upset you must be.”B. “I appreciate your understandi n g.”C. “I’m sorry for the delay.”D. “I know it’s our fault.”54. Customer delight is important for airlines because ________.A. their telephone style remains unchangedB. they are more likely to meet with complaintsC. the services cost them a lot of moneyD. the policies can be applied to their staff55. Which of the following is conveyed in this article?A. Face-to –face service creates comfortable feelings among customers.B. Companies that promise more will naturally attract more customers.C. A company should promise less but do more in a competitive market.D. Customer delight is more important for air lines then for banks.DIt was Saturday. As always, it was a busy one, for “Six days shall you labor and all your work” was taken seriously back then. Outside, Father and Mr. Patrick next door were busy chopping firewood. Inside their own houses, Mother and Mrs. Patrick were engaged in spring cleaning.Somehow the boys had slipped away to the back lot with their kites. Now, even at the risk of having Brother caught to beat carpets, they had sent him to the kitchen for more string(线). It seemed there was no limit to the heights to which kites would fly today. My mother looked at the sitting room, its furniture disordered for a thorough sweeping. Again she cast a look toward the window. “Come on, girls! Let’s take string to the boys and watch them fly the kites a minute.”On the way we met Mrs. Patric, laughing guiltily as if she were doing something wrong, together with her girls. There never was such a day for flying kites! We played all our fresh string into the boys’kites and they went up higher and higher. We could hardly distinguish the orange-colored spots of the kites. Now and then we slowly pulled one kite back, watching it dancing up and down in the wind, and finally bringing it down to earth, just for the joy of sending it up again.Even our fathers dropped their tools and joined us. Our mothers took their turn, laughing like schoolgirls. I think we were all beside ourselves. Parents forgot their duty and their dignity; children forgot their everyday fights and little jealousies. “Perhaps it’s like this in the kingdom of heaven,” I thought confusedly. It was growing dark before we all walked sleepily back to the housed. I suppose we had some sort of supper. I suppose there must have been surface tidying-up, for the house on Sunday looked clean and orderly enough. The strange thing was, we didn’t mention that day afterward. I felt a little embarrassed. Surely none of the others had been as excited as I. I locked the memory up in that deepest part of me where we keep “the things that cannot be and yet they are.”The years went on, then one day I was hurrying about my kitchen in a city apartment, trying to get some work out of the way while my three-year-old insistently cried her desire to “go park, see duck.”“I can’t go!” I said. “I have this and this to do, and when I’m through I’ll be too tired to walk that far.”My mother, who was visiting us, looked up from the peas she was shelling. “It’s a wonderful day,” she offered, “really warm, yet there’s a fine breeze. Do you remember that day we flew kites?”I stopped in my dash between stove and sink. The locked door flew open and with it a rush of memories. “Come on,” I told my little girl. “You’re right, it’s too good a day to miss.”Another decade passed. We were in the aftermath(余波) of a great war. All evening we had been asking our returned soldier, the youngest Patrick Boy, about his experiences as a prisoner of war. He had talked freely, but now for a long time he had been silent. What was he thinking of --- what dark and horrible things?“Say!” A smile sipped out from his lips. “Do you remember --- no, of course you wouldn’t. It probably didn’t make the impression on you as it did on me.”I hardly dared speak. “Remember what?”“I used to think of that day a lot in POW camp (战俘营), when things weren’t too good. Do you remember the day we flew the kites?”56. Mrs. Patrick was laughing guiltily because she thought________.A. she was too old to fly kitesB. her husband would make fun of herC. she should have been doing her howD. supposed to the don’t game57. I was just 84 and in pretty good health、A year went by and I heard nothing、But then at a community party in late April 2009, they announced that I was one of the winners、I just couldn’t believe it、Inspired by this, I decided to realize my dream, even though some of my family members and my doctor were against it、One June 11, 2009, nearly 40 of my family and friends gathered in the area close to where I would land while I headed up in the airplane、My instructor, Jay, guided me through the experience、The plane was the noisiest one I had ever been in, but I wasn’t frightened—I was really just looking forward to the experience、When we reached 13,000 feet, Jay instructed me to throw myself out of the plane、When we first hit the air, the wind was so strong that I could hardly breathe、For a second I thought, “What have I gotten myself into?” But then everything got calmer、We were in a free fall for about aminute before Jay opened the parachute(降落伞), then we just floated downward for about five minutes、Being up in the clouds and looking at the view below was unlike anything I have ever felt—much better than the hot air balloon、I was just enjoying it、Skydiving was really one of the greatest experiences of my life、I hope other people will look at me and realize that you don’t stop living just because you are 84 years old、If there’s something you want to experience, look into it、If it’s something that is possible, make it happen、56.What happened to the author in 2001?A.She flew an airplaneB.She entered a competitionC.She went on a hot air balloon rideD.She moved into a my Blackberry—it’s my little connect ion to the larger world that can go anywhere with me、I also love my laptop computer, as it holds all of my writing and thought、Despite this love of technology, I know that there are times when I need to move away from these devices(设备)and trulycommunicate with others、On occasion, I teach a course called History Matters for a group of higher education managers、My goals for the class include a full discussion of historical themes and ideas、Because I want students to thoroughly study the material and exchange their ideas with each other in the classroom、I have a rule —no laptops, iPads, phones, etc、When students were told my rule in advance of the class, some of them were not happy、Most students assume that my reasons for this rule include unpleasant experiences in the past with students misusing technology、There’s a bit of truth to that、Some students assume that I am anti-technology、There’s no truth in that at all、I love technology and try to keep up with it so I can relate to my students、The real reason why I ask students to leave technology at the door is that I think there are very few places in which we can have deep conversions and truly engage complex ideas、Interruptions by technology often break concentration and allow for too much dependence on outside information for ideas、I want students to dig deep within themselves for inspiration and ideas、I want them to push each other to think differently and to make connections between the course the material and the class discussion、I’ve been te aching my history class in this way for many years and the educations reflect student satisfaction with the environment that I create 、Students realize that with deep conversation and challenge, they learn at a level that helps them keep the course material beyond the classroom、I’m not saying that I won’t ever change my mind about tec hnology use in my history class, but until I hear a really good reason for the change、I’m sticking to my plan、A few hours of technology-free dialogue is just too sweet to give up、63.Some of the students in the history class were unhappy with____A.the course material B.others’ misuse of technologyC.discussion topics D.the author’s class regulat ions64.T he underlined word “engage ”in Para、4 probably means ____、A.explore B.accept C.change D.reject 65.According to the author ,the use of technology in the classroom may ____、A.keep students from doing independent thinkingB.encourage students to have in-depth conversationsC.help students to better understand complex themesD.affect students’ concentration on course evaluation66.It can be inferred from the last paragraph that the author ____A.is quite stubborn B.will give up teaching historyC.will change his teaching plan soon D.values technology-free dialogues in his classDAs the railroads and the highways shaped the American West in the past centuries, a new electrical generating(发电)and transmission(输送)system for the 21st century will leave a lasting mark on the West, for better or worse、Much of the real significance of railroads and highways is not in their direct physical effect on the scenery, but in the ways that they affect the surrounding community、The same is true of big solar plants and the power lines that will be laid down to move electricity around、The 19th century saw land grants(政府拨地)offered to railroad companies to build the transcontinental railroads, leaving public land in between privately owned land、In much of the West, some of the railroad sections were developed while others remained undeveloped, and in both cases the landownership has presented unique challenges to land management、With the completion of the interstate highway system, many of the small towns, which sprang up as railway stops and developed well, have lost their lifeblood and died、Big solar plants and their power lines will also have effects far beyond their direct footprint in the West、This is not an argument against building them、We need alternative energy badly, and to really take advantage of it we need to be able to move electricity around far more readily than we can now、So trade-offs will have to be made、Some scenic spots will be sacrificed、Some species(物种)will be forced to move, or will be carefully moved to special accommodations、Deals will be struck to reduce the immediate effects、The lasting effects of these trade-offs are another matter、The 21st century development of the American West as an ideal place for alternative energy is going to throw off a lot of power and money in the region、There are chances for that power and money to do a lot of good、But it is just as likely that they will be spent wastefully and will leave new problems behind, just like the railroads and the highways、The money set aside in negotiated trade-offs and the institutions that control it will shape the West far beyond the immediate footprint of power plants and transmission lines、So let’s rememberthe effects of the railroads and the highways as we construct these new power plants in the West、67.What was the problem caused by the construction of the railways ?A.Small towns along the railways became abandoned 、B.Some railroad stops remained underused、C.Land in the West was hard to manage、D.Land grants went into private hands、68.What is the major concern in the development of alternative energy according to the last two paragraphs ?A.The transmission of power、B.The use of money and power、C.The conservation of solar energy、D.The selection of an ideal place、69.What is the author’s attitude towards building solar plants?A.Cautious B.Approving C.Doubtful D.Disapproving 70.Which is the best title for the passage?A.How the Railways Have Affected the WestB.How Solar Energy Could Reshape the WestC.How the Effects of Power Plants Can Be ReducedD.How the Problems of the Highways Have Been Settled第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,共10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处得最佳选项.选项中有两项为多余选项.Public Speaking and Critical ThinkingWhat is critical thinking? To a certain degree, it’s a matter of logic(逻辑)—of being able to spot weaknesses in other people’s arguments and to avoid them in your own、It also includes related skills such as distinguishing fact from opinion and assessing the soundness of evidence、In the broad sense, critical thinking is focused, organized thinking—the ability to see clearly the relationships among ideas、71 The greatest thinkers, scientists, and inventors have often taken information that was readily available and put it together differently to produce new ideas、That, too,is critical thanking、72 As the class goes on, for example, you will probably spend a good deal at time organizing your speeches、While this may seem like a purely mechanical(机械的)exercise, it is closely connected with critical thinking、If the structure of your speech is loose and confused, chances are that your thinking is also disordered and confused、If, on the other hand, the structure is clear, there is a good chance your thinking is too、Organizing a speech is not just a matter of arranging the ideas you already have 73What is true of organization is true of many aspects of public speaking、74 As you work on expressing your ideas in clear, accurate language, you will improve your ability to think clearly and accurately、75 As you learn to listen critically to speeches in class, you will be better able to assess the ideas of speakers in a variety of situations、If you take full advantage of your speech class, you will be able to develop your skills as a critical thinker in many circumstances、This is one reason public speaking has been regarded as a vital part of education since the days of ancient Greece、A.Rather, it is an important part of shaping the ideas themselves、B.This may seem like a lot of time, but the rewards are well worth it、C.It may also help you to know that there is no such thing as a perfect speech、D.It has often been said that there are few new ideas in the world, only reorganized ideas、E.If you are wondering what this has to do with your public speaking class, the answer is quite a lot、F.The skills you learn in your speech class can help you become a more effective thinker in a number of waysG.As you study the role of evidence and reasoning in speechmaking ,you will see how they can be used in other forms of communication as well、第四部分:书面表达(共两节,35分)第一节情景作文(20分)假设你是红星中学高二(1)班的学生李华.下面四幅图表述了近期发生在你们班的一个真实故事,请根据图片的先后顺序,为校刊“英语园地”写一篇短文,次数不少于60.第二节开放作文(15分)请根据下面提示,写一篇短文,词数不少于50、In your spoken English class, your teacher shows you the following picture、You are asked todescribe the picture and explain how you understand it、(请务必将开放作文写在答题卡指定区域内)参考答案第一部分:听力理解(共三节,30分)1—5 CBBAC 6—10 ACBAA 11—15 BCCBA16.4/four 17.vegetable 18.Melissa/MELISSA 19.brown 20.shorts第二部分:知识运用(共两节,45分)21—25 DBCDA 26—30 BCADC 31—35 ABBCD 36—40 CDBAC 41—45 ABCAD46—50 BADCB 51—55 ABDDC第三部分:阅读理解(共两节,40分)56—60 CDDBB 61—65 ACDAA 66—70 DCBAB 71—75 DEAFG第四部分:书面表达(共两节,35分)第一节情景作文(20分)一、内容要点:1.老师滑倒2.学生送老师看病3.学生看望老师4.老师回班上课二、One possible version:Last Monday, we were having our Chinese class when the teacher suddenly slipped and fell、We were all worried about her、One of the boys carried her on the back, with the help of some others, to the clinic immediately、It turned out that her right leg was broken and she had to stay in the hospital、The following day, we went to visit her with flower and fruit、Seeing her lying in bed with her leg wrapped in bandages, we felt sorry for her and fruit、Seeing her lying in bed with her leg wrapped in bandages, we felt sorry for her and hoped that she would recover soon、This Thursday she returned to the class on a wheelchair to give us lessons、We were all deeply moved and proud of having such a responsible teacher、第二节开放作文(15分)One possible version:In the picture, there stands a tree full of fruit on one side of the stream、Across the stream, a man is trying to reach out on the edge of the bank for the fruit with a net attached to a pole、Not far away there is bridge that can lead him to the tree for more fruit、The message conveyed in the picture is clear、In pursuing a dream, we might focus on only one way of making it come true, forgetting that there may be alternatives、As indicated in the picture, if the man is willing to look for other possibilities, he can find a better and more rewarding way to achieve his goal、All he has to do is to turn around, cross the bridge and walk to the tree、。
