Planning a vacation is fun! You pack your clothes. You plan your food. Your parents plan, too. They plan a budget. That means they decide how much money they want to spend. One part of a vacation budget has gone up a lot: the price of gasoline.
Gas prices have been going up, up, up! This means that some families are staying closer to home on their vacations. All kinds of transportation use gas-powered engines. Car engines use gas. Airplane engines use gas, too.
Gasoline comes from crude oil(原油). Chemicals are added to it. It makes the gas look and smell better.
Gas prices are affected by many things. World events in places where crude oil comes from affect gas prices. One example of this was the Persian Gulf conflict in 1990. Natural disasters also affect gas prices. One example of this was Hurricane Katrina.
High gas prices make it hard for families to travel. Gas used to cost less than $1.50/gallon in 1999. In 2007 it got up to $4.08/gallon. Those high prices affect everyone.
People are working on new kinds of cars--like an electric car-- so we don't need to use gas. In the meantime, families might stay closer to home because of high gas prices. They might be surprised at fun activities they find right in their own backyards!

Do you believe in fate(命运)? If you put this question to a thousand Chinese people, 700 of them would probably reply, “Yes, I do.” Most Chinese believe there is a sort of interaction(相互作用)between man and the stars, so if someone important is to be born, the fortune-teller (算命者) can observe it from the movement of the stars above.
A lot of women will spend lots of money asking a fortune-teller for advice if they are expecting a baby. Sometimes they will check a “special book” which will tell them the best hours for giving birth to a baby. Then at the right hour, the doctor or midwife will be required to help give birth to the baby. A natural birth is too dangerous because the mother-to-be cannot make sure that her baby will have a good future. We are being unfair by saying only women believe in these things because men do, too. Both men and women go to the temple and often pay the regular price of three hundred dollars to make sure that bad luck stays away.
The Chinese believe twelve years is a cycle and this cycle is made up of twelve different animals. If you are born under the Year of the Monkey and this year happens to be the Year of the Monkey, then it is suggested that you go to the temple. By spending three hundred dollars, a certain service will be provided to make sure bad luck stays away from you. After all, many people believe the stars are to be respected and feared.
