This proved as unpopular as talking films had done in the late 1920’s. It was not until 1938 that a full-length color film was made, and the success of this film made producers everywhere change from black and white to color. This first full-length color film was translated into ten different languages and made Hollywood the main center of film industryIn the early days of the cinema, other countries also had film industries. Very good films were made in Sweden, Britain, Russia and France. However, because Hollywood had so much money to spend, it kept its position as the world’s most important film center. Film actors went to America because they knew they could get a lot of money for every film they made. Sometimes she wants to be treated like a little girl and sometimes like a young lady. The problem is figuring out which time is which.〞Before age 11, children like to tell their parents what’s on their minds. “In fact, parents are first on the list,〞 said Michael Riera, author of Uncommon Sense for Parents with Teenagers. “This completely changes during the teen years,〞 Riera explained. “They talk to their friends first, then maybe their teachers, and their parents last.〞Parents who know what’s going on in their teenagers’ lives are in the best position to help them. To break down the wall of silence, parents should create chancesto understand what their children want to say, and try to find ways to talk and write to them. And they must give their children a mental break, for children also need freedom, though young.

A dentist may be able to put the tooth back in for you ,but you have to get to the dentist first. In the meantime, you have to store the tooth so that it will stay healthy. The simplest thing to do is to put the tooth back into your mouth, or you could put it on milk. Frank Courts, a dentist at the University of Florida, worked with other researchers to find the safest way of keeping knocked-out teeth. He tried putting teeth into milk, into water, and into cell-culture medium(细胞培养液). He also tried just drying the teeth in the open air. He used teeth that had to be removed from people‟s mouths for various reasons. The teeth were put into one of the solutions(溶液) or stored in the air for one hour. Then cells from the root of the teeth were scraped off the teeth. Dr Courts and the others then studied how healthy these cells were. The cell-culture medium worked best to keep a knocked-out tooth healthy outside the mouth. However, few people keep cell-culture medium handy at home or in school. The next best thing was milk. But Dr Courts said that the best thing of all was to wash the tooth and put it right back into its socket(牙槽) in the mouth. For some people, though, this is just too painful or upsetting. So milk will do, until you get your tooth (and your mouth) to a dentist.52. This passage is mainly about________.A. how a dentist can save a knocked-out toothB. how to keep a knocked-out tooth healthyC. how Dr Courts and other researchers made their experimentsD. how to put a knocked-out tooth back into its socket53. However, the meaning of a smile in different cultures may be different. Depending on different cultures, smiling can express joy and amusement, but it can also indicate embarrassment. The following examples show this point of view:In an attempt to be open and friendly, people in the United States smile a lot. Every one smiles at each other, this nonverbal communication shows being friendly in the United States. However,in China, smiling is not only an expression of happiness, but also a way to avoid being embarrassed. Chinese people like smiling when they are embarrassed in order to avoid embarrassment. Smiling is a kind of good will but not sneer(嘲笑). For example: When a child falls off from a bike, the adults in China may smile, which is a kind of gentle encouragement and may not be a kind of impolite laugh. When a person from the United States might blush(脸红)with embarrassment or become offensive, a Chinese might blush with smile. Rich and poor, young and old, one can see them all there, shouting for one side or the other. To a stranger, one of the most surprising things about football in England is the great knowledge of the game which even the smallest boy seems to have. He can tell you the names of the players in most of the important teams. He will tell you who he expects will win such a match, and his opinion is usually as good as that of men three or four times his age. Most schools in England take football seriously-much more seriously than nearly all European schools, where lessons are all very important and games are left for the children themselves. In England it is believed tha t education is not only a matter filling a boy’s mind with facts in the classroom: education also means the training of character; and one of the best ways of training character is by means of games, especially team games; where a boy or girl has to learn to work with others for his or her team, instead of working for oneself alone. The school therefore plans games and matches for its students. Football is a good team game. It is good both for the body and the mind. That’s why it is every school’s game in E ngland.45. But, at nearly 500 years of age, time is catching up with the Mona Lisa. The health of the famous picture, painted by Leonardo da Vinci in 1505, is getting worse by the year, according to the Louver Museum(卢浮宫) where it is housed.―The thin, wooden panel on which the Mona Lisa is painted in oil has changed shape since experts checked it two years ago,‖ the museu m said. Visitors have noticed changes but repairing the world’s most famous painting is not easy. Experts are not sure about the materials the Italian artist used and their current chemical state.Nearly 6 million people go to see the Mona Lisa every year, many attracted by the mystery of her smile. ―It is very interesting that when you’re not looking at her, she seems to be smiling, and then you look at her and she stops,‖ said Professor Margaret Livingstone of Harvard University. ―It’s because direct visi on(视觉) is excellent at picking up detail, but less suited to looking at shadows. Da Vinci painted the smile in shadows.‖However, the actual history of the Mona Lisa is just as mysterious as the smile. Da Vinci himself loved it so much that he always carried it with him, until it was eventually sold to France’s King Francis I in 1519.In 1911, the painting was stolen from the Louvre by a former employee, who took it out of the museum, hidden under his coat.
Text 10Walking around the small English town of Bath is like walking around a living museum. You can’t help breathing in the history and staring in wonder at the beautiful old buildings that line the streets. The name of Bath comes from the fact that the city was built around a natural spring, which is now in the heart of the city. It was the Romans who, 2,000 years ago, built baths using the naturally hot water that came up from the ground. One of the major attractions of the city is the Roman Baths that are still used as they were in the past.Located in the southwest of the country, the city is surrounded by the green and pleasant hills which England is famous for. Today, Bath is a great place to visit to get a feel for how an English city must have felt and looked like 2,000 years ago. Along any road you will find traditional pubs serving real beer and good home cooked food. No trip to England would be complete without a visit to Bath.
