Seeing them in person made me feel like I had traveled back in time.Our next destination was the breathtakingly beautiful city of Chengdu. Huihui and I were so excited because we got to see real live pandas at the panda research base! These round, fluffy bears Just lazed around munching on bamboo all day. It was like being inside a painting!After the lake, we went to Walk Street which is this long road just for walking with shops and food stands lining both sides. We ate some amazing local snacks like little soup dumplings, sweet rice cakes, and my new favorite - potted baby shrimp! They cook teeny tiny shrimp with a bunch of spices and put them in little ceramic pots to eat with a tiny spoon. So delicious!The best part of Hangzhou though was the Songcheng theme park. It's all about the history and culture of the Song Dynasty which ruled China a really long time ago. They havepeople dressed up in old costumes putting on shows with dancing, combat displays, and acrobatics. My favorite was the circus-style acrobatics show with tightrope walkers, contortionists, and people stacking chairs super high and doing handstands on top! I've never seen anything like it.After a few days in Hangzhou, we drove into the countryside to visit some smaller towns and villages. One town was famous for making extra stinky tofu - you could smell it from like a mile away! The tofu gets stinky from being fermented with moldy greens and other smelly stuff. I tried a bite and thought I might pass out from the powerful stench. My dad loved it though and said the stronger it smells, the better it tastes. Gross!We also saw soooo many green tea fields in the countryside. Zhejiang is known for growing the best green tea in China. At one farm, we got to pick some fresh tea leaves right off the bushes ourselves. The leaves get dried and rolled up before being shipped out to be made into green tea. We bought a bunch to take home with us.My absolute favorite part of the country part of our trip was hiking up one of the small mountains. The path went along a babbling brook with tiny wooden bridges to cross over it every so often. We saw butterflies flitting everywhere and stopped tolook at the teensiest little green frogs hopping around. When we got to the top, the view overlooking the lush green valleys and tidy villages below took my breath away. No skyscrapers or busy roads in sight, just peaceful nature.On our last day in Zhejiang, we visited the city of Shaoxing which is famous for making yellow rice wine. We got to tour one of the super old wineries and see the huge clay pots they ferment the wine in. At the end, we bought a bunch of little bottles of the wine to bring home as souvenirs for our family.
