《英语修辞与写作》教案Lecture One: Introduction of the course
1.Introduction
1.1Stimulating Questions
Do you enjoy writing?
Which do you prefer, writing or reading?
Which do you like better, writing or speaking?
Are there any occasions where writing can do more than speaking? What are the advantages of writing over speaking?
Etc.
1.2Difference Between Writing and Speaking
Formal/Informal; Punctuation; Spelling; Body Language; Colloquial/Slang; Easy to follow; Feedback; etc.
1.3Importance of Writing
---helpful to improve language ability ---useful to enrich thought and to train reasoning power since it takes time to write and you can think about something deeply and logically.
---good for oral practice
---beneficial to grasp large vocabulary ---a good way to kill time, a good hobby, to show talent, to voice your opinions, to make money, etc. Note: All the good points are true for Chinese writing. In short, writing ability in English, if not only, measures to distinguish majors from non-majors.
2.T he basic quality of good writing Content---You have got something to say. What you say is to be reasonable, logic and convincing.
“A wise man talks when he has something to say; a fool man talks
when he has to say something.”Format---The article should be clear, neat, brief, easy to follow, pleasant
to read. The structure must be
complete, including the opening,
body, ending.
Note: when you have something to say, of course with your pen, and you write it out in a presentable way, this will make your writing qualified. This, however, is far away from beautiful writing. Wonderful writing requires more qualities like creative ideas, large vocabulary, idiomatic expression, rich imagination, a variety of figurative use of language, etc. rhetoric
3.H ow to be a good writer?
3.1Keep abreast of new information, as much as possible
General Information in all circles
(economy, politics, culture, traveling, language, communication, environment, etc.)
The latest information to keep yourself up-to-date, through newspapers and TV and Internet.
Hunting for the most valuable information and avoid being drowned in the sea of valueless information about stars, games, etc.
3.2Keep on Writing
---to be an active thinker
---to be observant about life and what are happening around you.
