I really don’t.G: Well, it’s something you keep. It’s something that gives you a lot of memories.B: Oh. What’s thisG: Now don’t go just digging around in there! ... Hmmm, let’s see…. that’s my first diary. B: Can I….G: No, you can’t read it! It’s per sonal! I wrote about my first boyfriend in there. He became your grandfather!B: Oh, ok…. It’s my hi gh school book of memories.B: Class of 1961! Boy, that’s old!G: That’s about enough out of you, young man. I think it’s time we put this box away and…Listening 2At the age of thirteen, I took my first trip alone. I went to visit my grandparents in Los Angeles. I felt very nervous about traveling so far, but my mother said, “Don’t worry. You’ll be fine.” I got on the airplane and talked for a long time to a very nice woman who sat next to me. My grandparents met me at the airport and took me to their home.I stayed there for two weeks, and I had so much fun with them! It was my first time in Los Angeles, and I saw lots of really interesting places. In the end, I didn’t want to go home!Listening 3Making memoriesA popular new hobby is scrapbooking---making beautiful books to hold special memories. Scrapbook pages can include photos, drawings, journal entries. It’s not hard to make a scrapbook that you will enjoy for many years. Here are the steps..1. Choose a theme for your scrapbook pages. Some examples: “School days,”“ Family travel,” “Memories of my grandparents,”“ Baby’s first year.”2. Select photos for each page. Two or three really good photos are better than ten so-so photos.3. Find other paper keepsakes to use with your photos. Look for old newspaper clippings, postcards, tickets, report cards, letters--- anything made of paper. Use your imagination!4. Design the pages. Put photos and keepsakes together on each page and move them around until you find a layout that you like.5. Glue your photos and keepsakes into place. Then decorate your pages with felt pens, paint, and stickers. Use your imagination!6. Label your pages. This is the most important step! Remember to write down the “5 Ws” of your photos: Who, What, Where, When, and Why. This w ill make your scrapbook much more interesting and valuable in the future.Listening 4Yearbooks in the United StatesMost high schools in the United States publish a yearbook. The yearbook comes out once a year, usually in the spring. It is a record of the school year---- a “book of memories” for the students.Inside a yearbook is each student’s photo. The seniors are graduating soon, and their photos appear first. Next are the juniors. They are one year behind the seniors. Next come the sophomores, or second-year students. The last photos are the first-year students, the freshmen. The yearbook is not only about students. The teachers have photos, too.The yearbook also has photos and descriptions of sports teams, academic subjects, and extracurricular activities. These are activities students do after school, such as the chess club and Spanish club. There is even a yearbook club. Students in this club write, design, and take photos all year for the yearbook. At the end of the year, the book is printed. In the yearbook, some students receive special titles. The seniors vote and choose the “class clown”( a funny student), the “ most likely to succeed” ( a student everyone thinks will be successful), and the “ best dressed” (a student with a good fashion sense). There are also other awards and categories.Students typically sign each other’s yearbooks. This is especially important for the seniors, because they are graduating. Students write notes to each other, such as, “ We had a lot of fun,” or “ I’ll never forget you.” They also write about all the fun and funny experiences they shared in school together.Keys:OL1: A. 2-passport; 1-diary; 3-yearbook B. 1. boyfriend 2. People in Bangladesh don’t use many gestures. Waving at people and winking are very rude. Don’t touch people on the head. Don’t point with your foot---Bangladeshi people think feet are very dirty.Indonesians greet people with a long handshake, and they bow at the same time. At a meeting, give every person your business card, but use your right hand----using your left hand is very rude in Indonesia. In Thailand, the traditional greeting is called wai----people put their hands together and bow. Men and women don’t often touch each other in public. Thai people don’t use their hand for gestures, but they love to smile a lot. They sometimes laugh when they feel nervous or embarrassed.People in the United Arab Emirates have some special gestures. When two men meet, they shake hands. Sometimes old men touch noses together. Women kiss their friends on the cheek. If a man meets a woman, he doesn’t shake hands with her. He just smiles. When you give your friend something, give it to him with your right hand. Don’t use your left hand. And don’t point at peopole with your finger. Use your hand to gesture towards them.Optional Listening4World greetingsIn Brazil men often shake hands when they meet for the first time. When women meet, they kiss each other on the cheek. Women also kiss male friends to say hello. When you shake hands, look at the person in the eyes. This shows interest and friendliness. In New Zealand, usually, both men and women shake hands when they meet someone for the first time. Fun fact: If you see two people pressing their noses together, they are probably Maori. The Maori are the native people of New Zealand. This is their traditional greeting. In Japan when people meet for the first time, they usually bow. In business, people also shake hands. In formal situations, people often exchange business cards. When you give a business card, give it with both hands. This is polite. Special note: In Japan, a smile can have different meanings. It usually means that the person is happy. or that the person thinks something is funny. They played some hip hop, rock, heavy metal; and dance music. The heavy metal was “No way” for me.Do you know the rock group called “Gifted” They’re really popular right now. Well, they have a new CD coming out. We saw six different CD covers. (I guess they are trying to choose one.) This time, we didn’t have cards. Instead, we just talked about the covers we liked. Suddenly, a terrible explosion rocked the forest in Tunguska. People fell to the ground, and all the trees for 2000 square kilometers were down. People heard the explosion 800 kilometers away, and the fire burned for many weeks.B. What caused this terrible explosion A century later, scientists are still trying to find the answer. Here are some possible explanations.1. An asteroid: Asteroids are very large pieces of rock that goes around in space and sometimes hit the planet. They can cause lots of damage. Some of them weigh as much as 100,00 tons. If an asteroid hit the earth, it would cause a huge explosion.2. A comet: Comets are giant balls of gas, ice., and rock with long tails. They travel through space in a regular pattern. Encke’s Comet was near Earth in1908, and it’s possible that a part of it broke off and hit the earth.3. An UFO accident: Some people believe that a spaceship crashed into the ground in Siberia and its engine exploded.4. An extraterrestrials might have wanted to destroy the earth, so they aimed their weapons at Earth and set fire to the forest.5. A scientific experiment: Another idea is that scientists made a mistake during an experiment with electricity. A man named N ikola Tesla tried to build a “supergun” that used electricity. Maybe it was a test of his gun and it didn’t work correctly. Optional Listening 4Q. Where is Marfa and what exactly is it famous forA. Marfa is a small town in west Texas in the United States. It’s famous for the “Marfa mystery lights”Q. What are the mystery lights exactlyA. No one knows for sure. There are many different ideas about that.Q. Can you describe themA. Some people call it “the wonder drug”. Then d o you know who invented it? It was Felix Hoffmann, a German scientist, who worked this wonder. On March 6, 1999 the maker of aspirin, the German company Bayer celebrated Hoffmann’s discovery. The activity marked the 100th anniversary of aspirin’s launch.Berlin’s Imperial Patent Office granted Bayer a trademark for aspirin on March 6, 1899, but the company was denied patent protection because of its similarity to earlier discoveries. For this reason, aspirin was sold initially in powder form. However, it later became the first drug to be sold as a tablet.A Spanish philosopher summed up the remedy’s influence in the 1930s saying that modern man lived in “the age of the aspirin”. One hundred years after its introduction, Bayer’s annual sales total about 1 billion marks, which equals US$555 million. Even in the 21st century, aspirinsales remain strong. Hoffmann studied medicine in Munich and joined Bayer’s research department in 1894. He is believed to be the first to synthesize acetylsalicylic acid intoa usable form for medical applications. Bayer later marketed it as aspirin.3. BayerBayer Group, the third largest chemical and pharmaceutical manufacturer in the world, founded in 1863. The firm is a leader in research and development, spending nearly 12 percent of its revenues on this segment.4. A Spanish philosopher …“the age of the aspirin”.The Spanish philosopher praised aspirin very highly. It is because the drug was widely used and considered very effective in reducing fever in treating the 1918 flu (also called Spanish flu), which was believed to have killed as many as 2.5-5% of human population from March 1918 to June 1920.However, a century later, some people began to question the use of aspirin in treating Spanish flu. They hold that aspirin’s quick action of relief of pain or fever might have masked the symptoms, delayed the treatment and made it more difficult to find the right remedy.Exercise 1Listen to the recording and choose the right answers to the questions you hear.1. I think its founder Jeffery Bezos is really an inventive entrepreneur. At the days when companies were still at their early stages, he had the foresight to see the great potential of the commercial use of the Internet and opened an online bookshop, using a garage as his office and doors as desks. Now it has grown to be a website to go for books all over the world and a seller of every kind of commodity and service one can think of.Personally I haven’t d one any shopping on this website. I guess it would be far too expensive to have things shipped to me from the United States. My experience with online shopping is restricted to and .Shopping online is great. With a few clicks on the Internet, we can quickly seek out best deals for the goods or services we want to buy with different sellers. As online stores are available 24 hours a day, it is both convenient and time-saving. And the best thing about it is its lower price. Very ofte n we can get a discount. However, there’s no denying that online shopping also has its disadvantages. Sometimes the delivery is delayed and sometimes the merchandise delivered may not be as good as we thought it would be. But in spite of all these, shopping online has certainly revolutionized our way of buying things. For “Wonder Drug”Aspirin is really a wonderful drug. It has existed for over one hundred years, yet is still widely used to treat all kinds of illnesses. A century is a very long period of time indeed. During such a period, many other drugs were developed, marketed, used, and then disappeared. Some were replaced by their improved versions. Some were banned due to serious side effects discovered later in use. But aspirin, marketed in Germany by the end of the 19th century, is able to cross borders and enter the medicine cabinets of people’s homes across the world. No cultural differences or generation gaps can stop its spread. It has joined the ranks of famous brands like Coca-Cola and Levi’s to receive almost universal recognition. And the most amazing thing is that just when people are beginning to have second thoughts about using the drug as a fever reliever, some new use is found for the drug. Today it is largely taken as a preventive drug for heart attacks and strokes. No wonder some people call it “the wonder drug”.Part CTest Your ListeningA Compound DictationListen to the passage three times and supply the missing information.Nowadays in the United States, there are 1) 200,000 miles of pipeline, 170,000 gas stations and 243 million vehicles using petroleum fuels.Guy Nègre, the 2) founder and CEO of Motor Development International, is hoping to change all that. Unit 1 SportsPart AListening StrategyIdentifying NumbersNumbers appear very often in every kind of listening material. The ability to catch the exact numbers spoken in English is an important but difficult skill for a Chinese learner. A good way is to practice over and over again the pronunciation of the numbers, particularly the different ways to say thirteen and thirty, fourteen and forty, etc. It also helps to practice writing down the numbers you hear quickly in numerical forms, without translating them into Chinese. You’re going to hear a passage about Michael Jordan, a retired American professional basketball player. Very often, we have to listen “between the lines”. The English language offers many ways for people to imply, rather than directly state, their meaning. To find out what a speaker really means, we can rely on such things as the context, the meaning of an idiom, and the intonation used. For example, if someone says “I have an essay to write” in answer to an invitation to go somewhere, we can infer from the context that he cannot accept the invitation. And if someone says “Andrew passed with flying colors” in reply to an inquiry about how Andrew did on a test, we can infer from the meaning of the idiom “to pass with flying colors” that Andrew did very well on the test. Often, intonation also helps to reveal the real meaning of a message. For example, “He is very clever” said with an ironic tone means just the opposite. You are going to hear eight short conversations bet ween two speakers. Listen carefully and write down “Yes” or “No” to each of the following questions.1. Q: Does the woman enjoy the food in that restaurant? Yes2. Q: Is the man satisfied with the restaurant’s service? No3. Q: Do the children like the cake? Yes4. Q: Does the man like chicken best? No5. Q: Does the woman like the wine? Yes6. Q: Does John want a soda? No7. Q: Does the man like the fish? No8. Q: Will Sue eat out with the man tonight? NoScript:1. M: Have you ever been to that big restaurant opposite the school gate?W: Yes, many times. Whenever my friends come to visit me, I’ll take them there to eat.2. W: Is there something wrong, sir?M: My wife and I have been kept waiting for nearly an hour for our meal.3. W: Where is the cake I made this morning?M: We ate it, mom. Can you make another one for us?4. W: I hear you like chicken very much.M: Next to beef.5. M: Have you tried this wine before?W: No, never. It’s my first time, but it’s really to my taste.6. M: John, do you want a soda?W: Soda? I think it tastes like medicine.7. W: Why, the fish is left almost untouched.M: Well, it would be good if it were less salty.8. M: Hi, Sue, would you like to eat out tonight?W: Oh, I’d really like to, b ut my sister may come to visit me this evening.Part BPre-listening TaskQuestions for DiscussionYou are going to talk about food and drinks. What do you usually have for breakfast, lunch and supper?3. Do you sometimes eat out? What kind of place do you like to go to?4. What is your favorite food / dish / drink?5. How do you like health food?Demo:4. What is your favorite food? (Why do you like it?)I am not picky about food and it is hard for me to decide which food I like most. Meat, bread, vegetables, fruit, fish …, I like them all. It can be said that my favorites change with the season. For example, in spring, my favorite food includes vegetables and fruit. Background informationIn large cities such as New York and London, you can always find different styles of cuisine. And you havea variety of choices as to what to eat, from French food, Italian food, Chinese food, Japanese food, and Mexicanfood, to Malaysian or Thai food. Italian cuisine uses a lot of tomato sauce, cheese, and cream, and its food is more on the heavy side. Pizza and pasta (for example, spaghetti and macaroni) are popular with diners. Our own Chinese cuisine is noted for its combination of color, flavor and smell, and Sichuan-style spicy food and Chinese snacks are much favored by foreigners for their delicious taste. What counts as important details depends on the kind of information we want. Generally speaking, if we are listening to the narration of an event, we need to sharpen our ears not only for what happened, but also when and where, how and why it happened. In listening to a weather report, on the other hand, the important details we should watch out for are the current weather conditions, temperature, and weather outlook. You’re going to hear two short passages about weather. While listening, pay attention to such details as the weather conditions, temperature, weather outlook, damage caused by bad weather and so on, and write them down in note form. Then complete the exercises in your book.1. a. General weather conditions for today:Fine and pleasant.b. Temperature:High: 18 °C (64 °F)c. Weather outlook:Mostly cloudy with heavy showers moving in from the west.2. a. When did the storm start and how long did it last?It started around 8 p.m. and lasted for about three hours.b. How damaging was the storm? It caused four deaths and serious damage including a widespread power failure.Script:1. The weather today: a fine day is in store nearly everywhere, with the best of the sunshine in southern and central areas of Britain. A pleasant day, then, with long sunny periods developing. There will be light winds with a maximum temperature of 18 degrees Celsius, 64 degrees Fahrenheit.Look at the outlook for the next few days: it will become mostly cloudy with heavy showers moving in from the west.2. A storm in Changchun, capital of Northeas t China’s Jilin Province, claimed four lives on Sunday. The storm lasted about three hours from around 8 p.m. The winds reached speeds of over a hundred miles an hour, causing serious damage and a widespread power failure.Part BPre-listening TaskQuestions for DiscussionYou are going to talk about weather and weather forecasts. Read the following questions and discuss them with your partner.1. What’s the weather like now?2. What’s the weather forecast for today?3. How do you get weather information?4. What kind of climate do you like or dislike?5. Which season do you like best? Why?Demo:4. What kind of climate do you like or dislike?I like the climate of Shenyang City in the northern part of China. In spring it’s neither too hot nor too cold, with the temperature between 40-50 degrees Fahrenheit. The summer there is cool and pleasant. In the fall the leaves change colors with the temperature around 60-70 degrees Fahrenheit. Perhaps the winter there is the best time, for the scenery is gorgeous. The snow is like powder covering the ground everywhere and that makes it an amazing place for skiing and snowboarding.Additional Question for DiscussionDo you think it is possible or impossible to give accurate weather forecasts?Demo:I think it is too much to ask for accurate weather forecasts at present. There are still quite a few things about the weather that we just don’t understand. We have to further develop meteorological (气象的) science and related technologies. There is a long way to go before we can hope to have very accurate weather forecasts.Language FocusHere are some sentences and structures that you might find useful in discussing the above questions.。
