1 Week 9 Elizabethan Prose and Francis Bacon Generally speaking, prose had developed more slowly than poetry and the age had fewer prose writers than poets and dramatists. When we discuss Elizabethan prose, we should not forget Shakespeare, who, besides being a great poet and dramatist, also wrote excellent prose of various styles. Translators also made contributions to the development of English prose in this period and the culmination of all Renaissance translations is the English Bible of 1611, the so-called Authorized Version, which is the triumph of Elizabethan prose. It is also referred to as the King James Bible. This Bible is the most loved and most widely quoted in the English language. Its influence on later English is incalculable, and its mixture of majesty and simple diction has never been surpassed.
1.Francis Bacon (1561-1626) The first English essayist 1. Born in the family of Sir Nicholas Bacon, Keeper of the Privy Seal to Queen Elizabeth.(掌玺大臣) 2. Went to college at the age of 12. 3. After graduating at 16, he took up law, and became an attendant to the English Ambassador to France. 4. At 23, he became a member of the House of Commons. 5. During the reign of King James I, his position raised rapidly. 6. In 1607, he was the Solicitor General副检查长, and in 1613, he was promoted to Attorney General. 7. In 1618 he was appointed Lord Chancellor(大法官) and made Baron and Viscount. 8. In 1621, he was accused of bribery and was imprisoned. 9. After his release he retried to his residence, where he engaged in literary and scientific work. 10. He died in 1626.
2. Bacon's works Bacon's works include his Essays, as well as the Colours of Good and Evil 《关于善与恶》 and the Meditationes Sacrae 《神圣的沉思》, all published in 1597. His famous aphorism格言 , "knowledge is power", is found in the Meditations. Bacon also wrote In felicem memoriam Elizabethae, a eulogy for the queen written in 1609; and various philosophical works which constitute the fragmentary and incomplete Instauratio magna 《伟大的复兴》, the most important part of which is the Novum organum (新工具)(published 1620).
3. Bacon’s Importance to Literature 1st, he was the first English writer to pay attention to the audience to whom he was writing. 2nd, he wrote the greatest tracts on education in the English language, Advancement of Learning. 3rd, he and Newton represent the advancement of science during the 17th century. In fact, Bacon devised the inductive method of doing research. 4th, he introduced the essay as a literary form into the English language. Unlike other authors who were writing self-analyzing autobiographies and meditations(沉思录), Bacon was writing to inform, generally young men of his own station/class how to be more efficient, introducing and using the essay into the English language. 2
His style is very plain, and he tends to start his essays with a Latin quotation or classical anecdote. 4. Essay: A Definition It is a relatively short literary composition in prose, in which a writer discusses a topic, usually restricted in scope, or tries to persuade the reader to accept a particular point of view. The term essai was first applied to the form in 1580 by Montaigne, one of the greatest essayists of all time, to his pieces on friendship, love, death, and morality. In England the term was inaugurated in 1597 by Francis Bacon, who wrote shrewd meditations on civil and moral wisdom.
5. Text Study: Of Studies The text focuses on one controlling idea – “studies serve for delight, for ornament, and for ability.” And closely around the focus are five major issues: a. the proper or improper ways of studies; b. different men have different ideas about studies; c. ways of reading; d. different human characters coined by studying various subjects; e. the conquest of human defects through effective studies.
Studies serve for delight, for ornament, and for ability. Their chief use for delight, is in privateness and retiring; for ornament, is in discourse; and for ability, is in the judgement and disposition of business. For expert men can execute, and perhaps judge of particulars, one by one; but the general counsels, and the plots and marshalling of affairs, come best, from those that are learned. To spend too much time in studies is sloth; to use them too much for ornament, is affectation; to make judgment wholly by their rules, is the humor of a scholar. They perfect nature, and are perfected by experience: for natural abilities are like natural plants, that need pruning, by study; and studies themselves, do give forth directions too much at large, except they be bounded in by experience. Crafty men contemn studies, simple men admire them, and wise men use them; for they teach not their own use; but that is a wisdom without them, and above them, won by observation. Read not to contradict and confute; nor to believe and take for granted; nor to find talk and discourse; but to weigh and consider. Some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed, and some few to be chewed and digested; that is, some books are to be read only in parts; others to be read, but not curiously; and some few to be read wholly, and with diligence and attention.
