Unit4 Astronomy: the science of the starsReading: How Life Began on the Earth InterpretationGood morning, ladies and gentlemen. It’s my great honor and pleasure to be here sharing my lesson with you.I have been ready to begin this representation with six parts. Analysis of the teaching material, the students, the teaching aims, the important and difficult points, the studying methods, and the teaching procedure.Part 1 Teaching MaterialThe content of my lesson is New Senior English for China Book_3__ Unit_4_. This unit is about_Astronomy: the science of the stars. By studying of this unit, we’ll enable students to know sth. about astronomy and science of the stars and develop the interest in_science and learning English. At the same time, let the students learn how to_use the noun clauses as the subject and distinguish the noun clauses as the subject and as the object. From this lesson, it starts with warming up, pre-reading, reading and comprehending part. (As we all know, reading belongs to the input during the process of the language learning. The input has great effect on output, such as speaking and writing.) Therefore, this lesson is in the important position of this unit. If the Ss can master it well, it will be helpful for them to learn the rest of this unit.Part2 Analysis of the studentsThe students in Senior High School, grade one have already learned English for years, they can speak and communicate with their friends in English. They are moderate, mature and sensitive. They are highly motivated in learning English and have the ability to learn by themselves. Furthermore, the topic of this unit is about astronomy, which is full of mystery, the students will have greater interest in learning it. However, the differences in english level among students is the biggest challenge. Therefore the teacher should provide enough background information to make them better understand the text. Therefore, I will adopt appropriate teaching methods to arouse their interest in learning.Part 3 Teaching AimsAccording to the new standard curriculum and the syllabus (新课程标准和教学大纲), and after studying the teaching material, the teaching aims are the followings: 1.Knowledge objects (语言目标:语音,词汇,语法,功能,话题)(1)The Ss can master the usage of the important words and expressions.(2)The Ss can use the noun clauses as the subject and as the object in the proper situation.(3)The Ss can understand the content of the lesson, talk about astronomy and get their own idea about protecting the earth.2.Ability objects (技能目标:听,说,读,写)(1) To develop the Ss’ abilities of listening, speaking, reading and writing(2) To guide Ss to set up effective studying strategies.(3) To improve the student’s reading ability, especially their skimming and sca nning ability.(4) To train the Ss’ abilities of studying by themselves and cooperating .3.Emotion or moral objects (情感目标:兴趣,自信,合作,爱国,国际视野) (1)By completing the task, the Ss increase their interest in astronomy and science and set up self-confidence in learning English and protect the earth in proper ways.(2)Teach the Ss to cooperate with others and cultivate the patriotic spirit and international visions, put the moral education in the language study.Part 4 the Important and Difficult PointsBased on the requirement of the syllabus. The important points are_new words and expressions in the text, such as theory, billion, violent, fundamental, give birth to etc. The difficult points are the usages of noun clauses as the subject and as the object, how to distinguish these two kinds of noun clauses.Part 5 Teaching MethodsAs is known to us all, a good teaching method requires that the teacher should help Ss develop good sense of the English language. For achieving these teaching aims, (after the analysis of the teaching material and teaching aims,) I will use the following methods according to the modern social communication teaching theories(现代社会交际教学理论) .municative Approach(交际教学法)2. Whole Language Teaching(整体语言教学法)3. Task-based Language Teaching (任务教学法)4. Total Situational Action (情景教学) a “scene —activity” teaching method , it establishes a real scene and the interaction between the teacher and the Ss. At the same time, CAI (电脑辅助教学) can provide a real situation with its sound and picture, it can develop the Ss creativity in learning English.Part 6 Teaching ProcedureStep1.Lead-in.(__10___min)1.Ask students to read the questions in warming up part, then discuss with their group members. After that ask several representatives to give their ideas.2. Ask students: Do you know any big events in the astronomy in history? If you know, can you tell us sth. about them? Are you interested in science? Do you know how earth began to form?Purpose of my design: (1) to catch Ss’ attention abou t the class/topic/passage.(2)To set up suspense/develop interest in the astronomy and the science.Step 2. Pre-readingTask 1. D.It was the oldest planet.3)Why was water very important for the beginning of life? When students meet some difficulty, the teacher can give them some hints. For example:What is the earth's atmosphere made up of?(Show students some pictures about the earth's atmosphere.)Do the exercises.(group work)Check the answers.Possible answers:1)Carbon,nitrogen,water vapour and other gases.2)B3)Water allowed the earth to dissolve harmful gases and acids into the oceans and seas. That made it possible for life to begin to develop.Step 3 Intensive reading(task 2)T:When water came into being on the earth, life began. Then do you know how the lifedeveloped?Read the whole text and finish the chart.(pair work)Development of LifeAsk two students to write their answers on the blackboard.Possible answers:1.dust2.globe3.atmosphere4.Water5.plants6.oxygen7.land8.amphibians 9.dinosaurs10.mammalsStep 4 Have a discussion(task 3)Through the writer's description,we learned the development of life. It's a long and slow process. And the earth is the best place for all the living things to live on.But human beings didn't take good care of it.Listen to the last paragraph twice with books closed.Choose the best answers.(individual work)1)What problem is caused by human beings?A.They exist everywhere on the earth.B.They cause global warming.C.They find new methods of growing crops.D.They enjoy hunting and fishing.2)From the last paragraph we can infer that the author is a little ______.A.happy B.careless C.worried D.excitedPossible answers:1)B2)CNow we learn that human beings cause global warming. That is the green house effect. If the earth may become too hot for the lives on it,what will our future be like? And what can we do to protect our earth? Please have a discussion according to the questions.(group work)Questions:1)What will our future be like if the earth becomes too hot to live?2)What can we do to protect our earth?Notes:The green house effect is the main cause of the melt of iceberg, drought, floods and insect pest.Everyone on the earth must take action to protect our earth. For example,we can plant many trees. We must do our best to stop polluting our environment. Many new laws should be passed to place strict control over industrial pollution.Educate people in fighting pollution.Ask some groups to present their opinions.Step 5 Self-assessmentWrite down your opinions according to the questions in the card.1)Can you give a brief introduction to how the universe developed, how life began on the earth and the development of life in your own words?2)What strategies of reading have you learned in the class?3)Are you active in the class?4)What problems did you have in reading?5)What help do you need from the teacher?Step 6 Homework1)Please try your best to retell the passage in your own words.2)Write a short passage according to what we have discussed. The title is “How to Protect the Earth”.About 120 words.。
Unit 4 Astronomy: thescience of the starsContents 目录一、单元教学目标和要求(Teaching aims and demands)二、教材内容分析
(Phrases and expressions):the solar system, in time, carbon dioxide, prevent… from, depend on, cheer up, now that, break out,功能(Functions):学习掌握一些用于陈述问题及给予意见的结构,如:My problem/ trouble is……? The difficulty / question is…My advice/ suggestion is…What I think about it is…Please pay attention to…Make sure you …Watch out for…语法(Grammar):掌握和运用主语从句。
Using languageStep1. Lead inT: We have learnt a lot about astronomy, have you got interested in it? If you are going to study astronomy, what problem will you face most?S2:Gravity.T: What is gravity?S3: Everything will fall back to the earth if it is dropped or thrown away. The pull of the earth is called gravity.T: Quite right. Who first got the idea of gravity?S4: Isaac Newton.T: How did he get the idea?S5: One day he was sitting under the tree. He saw an apple fall, which made him get the idea. Besides Newton, are there any other scientists who made a great contribution to the idea of gravity?S6: Albert Einstein, Stephen Hawking.T: How did each of them think of gravity? Or did they share the same idea of gravity? Come on, the tape will tell you.Step 2 Listening1.Listen to the tape and choose the best main idea of the listening passage (Ex.2 P30).Main idea: ①I heard about how three men made mistakes when they tried to describe gravity.②I heard about how three men wanted to find out about the beginning of the universe.③I heard about how the idea of gravity has developed over a long period of time.④I heard about three scientists and their work. The best answer : ③2.Listen to the tape again and fill in the chart in Ex. 1 on P30.(Note: Astronomers and scientists think that a black hole is a region of space (not a thing) into which matter has fallen and from which nothing can escape —not even light. So we can’t see a black hole. A black hole exerts a strong gravitational pull and yet it has no matter. It is only space - or so we think.)Step3.Reading1.Fast readingT: All the three great scientists Newton, Einstein and Hawking played an important role in the development of ideas of gravity. Would you like to know more about gravity?Ss: Yes.T: Is the moon’s gravity the same as that of the earth?S1: No.T: Read fast to see how many times would the force of gravity change?S2: Three.2.Careful readingT: What are the three times? How would the force of gravity change?T: Good! I am sure you must know more about the gravity. Suppose you are asked to make a summary about the trip, will you try? You only need to fill the blacks and the first word has been given.Last month I visited the moon with my friend. Before we left, I was told the force of gravity would change three times on our journey. Then we took off. As we left the earth, I became very heavy. Gradually the weight lessened. When I was in space, it disappeared. We floated weightlessly in the cabin and I cheered up. When I was on the moon, I was surprised to find out even walking needs lots of practice now that gravity changed. The returning of the earth was very frightening. We were amazed to watch fire break out on the outside of the ship.Step4. Reading taskT:Great! But just imagine that the moon has great gravity, then what will happen?S3: It will pull us.T: Right, maybe when we are approaching it, we will be caught in it. So let’s come to the black hole.T: What are in the black hole?S: A large circle of lights going round an empty space.T: What is the circle of lights?S: Large stars.T: What is the empty space like?S: It looks like a mouth needing to be fed.T: How did they feel?S: They watched in shock and amazement as a large sun suddenly disappeared into the hole.T: So what did they decide to do?S: They decided to turn the spaceship away from the hole .T: What was happening?S: not move--- jump and move around the edge of the outside of the hole--- pulling us slowly into its “mouth”--- go faster and faster.T: What did the author feel?S: feel sick, the watch moves slower and slower, my mouth dry, close my eyes.T: It seemed that they would be caught by the gr avity of a “black hole”.But what happened later?S: jump again--- increase its speed--- as fast as light--- flew like a bird.T: This time, how was the author affected?S: was bumped and banged--- able to look around us--- the computer started working again.T: What did the author feel?S: Exciting.T: Why?S: They realized that they had discovered something new about “black hole”---- They “eat’ some objects but “spit” other objects out.Step5. Homework1.Search for more about the black hole.2.Read these two passages again to find out how to organize a story.。
教学过程一、课堂导入Play a game to learn the names and positions of the planets:Venus is next to Mercury.Earth is the third planet.Mars is between Earth and Jupiter.Neptune is the furthest planet from the sun.Saturn is between Uranus and Jupiter.Mercury is closest to the sun.二、复习预习教师引导学生复习上节课所学知识点,(以提问、回顾的形式进行),针对上节课的作业进行讲评、订正、答疑,并通过对主语从句具体用法的分析和扩展导入本节课所要学习的课本知识的学习。

1 on P30.into which matter has fallen and from which nothing can escape —not even light. How would the force of gravity change?3.SummaryT: Good! So let’s come to the black hole.T: What are in the black hole?S: A large circle of lights going round an empty space.T: What is the circle of lights?S: Large stars.T: What is the empty space like?S: It looks like a mouth needing to be fed.T: How did they feel?S: They watched in shock and amazement as a large sun suddenly disappeared into the hole.T: So what did they decide to do?S: They decided to turn the spaceship away from the hole .T: What was happening?S: not move--- jump and move around the edge of the outside of the hole--- pulling us slowly into its “mouth”--- go faster and faster.T: What did the author feel?S: feel sick, the watch moves slower and slower, my mouth dry, close my eyes.T: It seemed that they would be caught by the gravity of a “black hole”.But what happened later?S: jump again--- increase its speed--- as fast as light--- flew like a bird.T: This time, how was the author affected?S: was bumped and banged--- able to look around us--- the computer started working again.T: What did the author feel?S: Exciting.T: Why?S: They realized that they had discovered something new about “black hole”---- They “eat’ some objects but “spit” other objects out.Step5. Homework1.Search for more about the black hole.2.Read these two passages again to find out how to organize a story.。
教学设计 Learning about Language:Important language points 整体设计 教材分析 The emphasis of this period will be placed on the important new words, expressions and sentence patterns in the parts Warming Up,Pre-reading,Reading and Comprehending. In order to make students understand these important points thoroughly,we can first get students to understand their meanings in the context, then give some explanations about them, and later offer some practices to make students master their usages. Some new words and expressions, such as exist, puzzle,in time,in one's turn, prevent…from and so on are very useful and important. So are the sentence patterns “The earth became so violent that it was not clear whether the shape would last or not.” and “So whether life will continue on the earth for millions of years to come will depend on whether this problem can be solved.” We ought to pay more attention to them and design special exercises. At the end of the class, the teacher can make students do more exercises for consolidation. In doing so,they can learn, grasp and use these important language points well. 教学重点 1.Enable students to grasp the usages of such important new words and expressions as exist, puzzle,in time,in one's turn, prevent…from, etc. 2.Get students to master the patterns “The earth became so violent that it was not clear whether the shape would last or not.” and “So whether life will continue on the earth for millions of years to come will depend on whether this problem can be solved.” 教学难点 1.Let students learn the usage of the expression “prevent…from…”. 2.Enable students to learn the sentence pattern“It is(not)+adj.+that(whether)…”. 3.Get students to understand some difficult and long sentences. 三维目标 知识目标 1.Get students to learn and grasp the important useful new words and expressions in this part:astronomy, system, religion, theory, atom, billion, globe, violent, carbon, atmosphere, unlike, fundamental, harmful, acid, chain, multiply, oxygen, exist, thus, dioxide, puzzle, solar system,in time, lay eggs, give birth to,in one's turn, carbon dioxide, prevent…from 2.Let students learn the following important useful sentence patterns: 1)What_it_was_to_become was uncertain until between 4.5 and 3.8 billion years ago when the dust settled into a solid globe.(be to do;what-clause as the subject) 2)The earth became so violent that it_was_not_clear_whether_the_shape_would_last_or_not.(so…that;it is/was not+adj.+whether-clause) 3)What is even more important is that as the earth cooled down, water began to appear on its surface.(what-clause as the subject;that-clause as the predicative) 4)It was not immediately obvious that water was to be fundamental to the development of life.[it is/was(not)+adj.+that…] 5)So whether_life_will_continue_on_the_earth_for_millions_of_years_to_come will depend on whether this problem can be solved.(whether-clause as the subject;depend on+whether-clause as the object) 能力目标 1.Get students to use some useful new words and expressions correctly. 2.Enable students to make sentences with the useful sentence patterns. 情感目标 1.Stimulate students' interest in learning English. 2.Develop students' spirit of cooperation and teamwork. 教学过程 Step 1 Revision 1.Check the homework exercises. 2.Ask some students to talk about how life began on the earth. Step 2 Reading and finding Get students to read through Warming Up,Pre-reading,Reading and Comprehending to underline all the new words and useful expressions or collocations in these parts. Read them aloud and copy them down in the exercise book after class.Try to keep them in mind. Step 3 Practice for useful words and expressions 1.Turn to Page 28.Go through the exercises in Discovering useful words and expressions with students and make sure they know what to do. 2.Give them several minutes to finish the exercises. They first do them individually, and then discuss and check them with their partners. 3.Check the answers with the whole class and explain the problems they meet where necessary. Step 4 Studying important language points 1.However,according to a widely accepted theory, the universe began with a “Big Bang” that threw matter in all directions. 然而,一种普遍为人们所接受的理论是:宇宙起源于一次大爆炸,这次大爆炸将物质投射到四面八方。 句子中的that threw matter in all directions是定语从句。 according to:as stated by(sb.)or in(sth.)根据 According to John, you were in Edinburgh last week. 据约翰说,你上周在爱丁堡。 You've been in prison six times according to our records. 根据我们的记录,你曾入狱六次。 Big Bang:宇宙大爆炸 2.What it was to become was uncertain until between 4.5 and 3.8 billion years ago when the dust settled into a solid globe. 地球会变成什么(样子),直到45亿至38亿年前这个云团变成一个固体的球状物,才确定下来。 句子中含有两个从句。What it was to become是主语从句;when the dust settled into a solid globe是定语从句,先行词为years。 3.The earth became so violent that it was not clear whether the shape would last or not. 地球变得激烈动荡,不知道这个固体形状是否会继续存在下去。 句子中的it为形式主语,真正的主语是主语从句whether the shape would last or not。为了避免主语显得过长,可以用it作为句子的主语,把主语从句移到句子的末尾。例如: It is hard to understand why there is gravity. 很难理解为什么会有地球引力。 It is not clear how gold was found there. 那儿是怎么发现金子的还不清楚。 4.They were in time to produce carbon, nitrogen, water vapour and other gases, which were to make the earth's atmosphere. 它们最终产生了碳、氮气、水蒸气和其他多种气体,从而形成了地球的大气层。 句子中的which were to make the earth's atmosphere是非限制性定语从句,修饰carbon, nitrogen, water vapour and other gases。 in time:sooner or later;eventually 迟早;最后 You will succeed in time. 你迟早会成功的。 in time(for sth./to do sth.):not late 及时;不迟 She will be back in time to prepare dinner. 她来得及回来准备晚饭。
