subject,it was, perhaps, physical education. He was an excellent soccer player, yet not as good as his brother. This was Niels Bohr, the world-famous Nobel prize winning physicist.Born to a physiology(生理学) professor,Niels lived in a world of ideas and discussion from his very early childhood at home.He developed an interest in physics and mathematics from the early days of his education. With no laboratory available in school and college,he would perform experiments in his father’s laboratory. His first work on surface tension was done here, for which he won the Gold Medal in 1906 from the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences.Early in his scientific career,Bohr made great contributions to the understanding of atomic(原子的) structure based on quantum mechanics(量子力学).Neils Bohr came up with the model of an atom which was able to explain all the properties(性质) of the atom.It is this atomic model that is accepted even today with only very slight improvements. This work won him the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1922.When the Nazis controlled Denmark, his life became difficult. He had to escape to Sweden in 1943 ina fishing boat;from there he fled to England.England opened up opportunities of working on the atom bomb(原子弹).After a few months he joined a British research team and went to Los Alamos in the United States where the team continued to work on the project.Niels was also deeply concerned with making people realize the destructive power of the atomic bomb.He published a letter to the United Nations in 1950 which asked them to help get rid of nuclear(核的) weapons in the world. This and his other activities won Bohr the first U.S.Atoms for Peace Award in 1957.He spent his remaining years showing people that nuclear energy must be used in a positive and productive way.1.Who probably helped Niels Bohr develop an interest in physics?A.His brother.B.His mother.C.His teacher.D.His father.2.Niels Bohr received the Nobel Prize mainly because of________.A.his physical educationB.his atomic modelC.his understanding of quantum mechanicsD.his work on surface tension3.Niels Bohr did his research work on the atom bomb in________.A.DenmarkB.AmericaC.EnglandD.Sweden4.From the early 1980s,when I was teaching Early Childhood Development through a program with Union College in Barbourville,Kentucky. The job responsibilities required occasional visits to the classroom of each teacher in the program.Dorothy stands out in my memory as one who “bloomed” in her remote area.Dorothy taught in a school in Harlan County,Kentucky,Appalachian Mountain area.To get to her school from the town of Harlan,I followed a road winding around the mountain. In the eight-mile journey,I crossed the same railroad track five times, giving the possibility of getting caught by the same train five times.Rather than feeling excited by this drive through the mountains,I found itdepressing. The poverty level was shocking and the small shabby houses gave me the greatest feeling of hopelessness. From the moment of my arrival at the little school, all gloom(忧郁) disappeared.Upon arriving at Dorothy’s classroom,I was greeted with smiling faces and treated like a queen. The children had been prepared to show me their latest projects.Dorothy told me with a big smile that they were serving poke greens salad and cornbread for “dinner”(lunch). In case you don’t know, poke greens are a weed-type plant that grows wild, especially on poor ground.Dorothy never ran out of reports of exciting activities of her students. Her enthusiasm never cooled down. When it came time to sit for the testing and interviewing required to receive her Child Development Associate Certification,Dorothy was ready. She came to the assessment and passed in all areas.Afterward, she invited me to the one-and-only steak house in the area to celebrate her victory,as if she had received her Ph.D.degree.After the meal, she placed a little box containing an old pen in my hand. She said it was a family heirloom(传家宝),but to me it is a treasured symbol of appreciation and pride that cannot be matched with things.5.“Early Childhood Development” in Paragraph 1 refers to________.A.a program directed by The night before, I still remember lying in bed, feeling both anxiety and excitement. When I got to my school's courts, I saw a crowd of unfamiliar faces. Coach Crawbuck stressed how the team would be set up through challenge matches. Afterwards, the coach paired us together to begin playing games. Unlike many other sports, tennis relies only on the individual player's ability. Because of this, I had to make sure that all my points were not only consistent but strategic as well.At the beginning, I was ranked number 19 on the team. The second year, I improved greatly, ranking number 10. One day, I visited to even find an introduction to myself! It was exciting to see that I was listed as a part of the tennis community.Soon, school started again, and our team began to play matches against other schools. Sometimes, it was stressful knowing that our team's undefeated record could not be broken. Once, my partner Alyssa and I played a five-hour match against South Brunswick simply so that our team could keep this standing. Needless to say, it was very exhausting! The term “tennis team” doesn't sound right since the sport is singular in its nature. However, through my experiences with tennis, I have gotten to meet so many amazing players who have become my close friends. Not only does the team bond through our time on the courts, but also through the events the captains organize. Overall, playing tennis has become second nature for me and I don't know where I would be without it.21. It's indeed a long way — 260 miles — so we need a lot of people to do a lot of one-mile laps round the Woods. The more people that you can get to sponsor (赞助) you, the more money we can raise to help look after our beautiful woodland. Sponsor forms are available from the shop at the Woods or on our website. There were 15 volunteers at the Oral History Training Day which was led very ably by Julia Letts. Lots of issues were discussed and ideas considered. The group will be meeting again and will have the opportunity to do some practice interviews before starting to interview the local people who have offered to tell their stories. We are happy to hear from others who would like to be interviewed about their memories of the Woods for the project. If you or anyone you know is interested, please contact Viv Cole at the office. Finally, don't forget the Easter Egg Roll on Bank Holiday Monday, 9th April, starting at 11 a.m. Bring your £1.00 entry money and your own hard-boiled and decorated (装饰的) egg to roll down the hill in the Woods. The police need to be equipped for the 21st century. In Britain we've already got the world's biggest DNA database. By next year, the state will have access to the genetic data of 4.25 million people: one British-based person in 14. Hundreds of thousands of those on the database will never have been charged with a crime.Britain is also reported to have more than four million CCTV (closed circuit television) cameras. There's a continuing debate about the effectiveness of CCTV. Some evidence suggests that it's helpful in reducing shoplifting and car crime. It has also been used to successfully identify terrorists (识别恐怖分子) and murderers. However, many claim that better lighting is just as effective when it comes to preventing crime, and that cameras could displace (转移) crime. A police report said that only one crime was solved for every 1,000 cameras in London in 2007. In short, there's conflicting evidence about the effectiveness of cameras, so it's likely that the debate will continue.Professor Mike Press, who has spent the past decade studying how design can contribute to crime reduction, said that, in order for CCTV to have any effect, it must be used in a targeted way. Most cameras that simply record city centres continually — often not being watched — do not produce results. CCTV can also have the opposite effect of thatintended, by giving citizens a false sense of safety and encouraging them to be careless with property and personal safety.Professor Press said: “All the evidence suggests that CCTV alone makes no positive influence on crime reduction and prevention at all. The weight of evidence would suggest the investment is more or less a waste of money unless you have lots of other things in place.” He believes that much of the increase is driven by the marketing efforts of safety companies who promote the crime-reducing benefits of their products. He described it as a “lazy approach to crime prevention”and said that authorities (官方) should instead be focusing on how to change the environment to reduce crime.28. Should she be allowed to do that?SMS is on the increase but is it sending the right message to young people and teachers? Some teachers believe that SMS is having a negative effect on young people's literacy (识字) skills. They say that texting is preventing young people from writing properly. Because texting is fast and users have to be brief, good grammar, spelling and sentence structure is forgotten. As a result, young SMS users are not able to write correct English. Other teachers, however, say that young people should be permitted to express themselves and that texting is just a modern means of communication. Teachers who want to ban it are “old-fas hioned.” One educational expert commented, “Children need to learn to communicate in a range of ways.”A lot of teachers and lecturers refer to the story of the teenager who wrote an entire English essay in text language. Her essay started, “My summ r hols wr CWOT. B4, we used 2go2 NY 2 C my bro. ILNY, it's a gr8 plc.” The translation of this is, “My summer holidays were a complete waste of time. Before, we used to go to New York to see my brother. I love New York. It's a great place.”●Text la nguage should only be used for texting! (That's why it's called TEXT language.) Most of them simply don't understand text language.— Chris, 18, Leeds●No way!
