高考英语优秀作文带翻译(通用7篇)高考英语优秀作文带翻译篇1What is success? As we all known, the man who wants to be success should have a good disposition. As the saying goes, “disposition decide to everything.” I remember a famous motto: there are no two identical people in the world, but the success people are similar in many ways. Exactly, good disposition is the foundation of success. From my point of view, I deemed it success should also rely on these factors: diligent, confident, humor. It can help us to open the door of success. There is no denying that diligent is the first step to the success. As the proverb says, no pains, no gains. Absolutely, guess that a person without diligent, how can he get achievements. Many successful people have become famous in the world by their diligent. Therefore we should take diligence as a good habit rather than lazy at every time.Edison said “confident is the mother of the success. There is no doubt that confidence is important to our daily life .If someone without confident, he will never succeed in the end of his life. If someone trusted himself, he would gained more chance to succeed. How could you get other’s trust if you didnt trust yourself? In addition, humor plays an important role in our life. It’s obvious that a sense of humor can bring happiness to others and get involved to a group easily. Just like my friend who is an energetic and lovely boy.The boss and staff like him very much. Boss thinks highly of him in the company. Sometimes, we should learn to how express humorously. A sense of humor can create unexpected result. From what has been mention above, a good disposition is an important factor to our success. Therefore, how to develop a good disposition is essential.关于成功英语作文的翻译:什么是成功?我们都知道想要成功的人都应该有一个好的性格。
1.Time Is Money“Time is money.” This saying means that time is very valuable. But time is more valuable than money. The money we have lost can be gained again, but the time we have wasted cannot be regained. Moreover, sometimes persons can exist without money, but nothing can be done without time, just as no one can live without air.Despite being so valuable, time is often neglected by men. Since time is an invisible thing, men often waste their time unconsciously(无意地). Without anything to do, they may gossip from morning till night.Man can live only at most to about 100 years. It seems fairly long, but in fact it is rather short. We often say “How quickly time flies!” How many things can a man accomplish in such a short period? Hence we should use the valuable time properly to do our work. We will race with it. We will study and work hard. Never waste a little bit of it.2. Try to Be a Good StudentPerhaps it is the dream of everyone to be a good student at school, but quite a few students feel at a loss on how to make it. In my opinion it is rather easy if you can act on the following points.First of all, make full use of your time and work hard. Don’t put off till tomorrow what should be done today, as time past will never come back. The fast developing society requires adequate knowledge, which presses us to spare no efforts to study. Of course, your hard work will be rewarded one day.Secondly, use your own head and present your point of view. Credulous(轻信的)attitude will only make you take anything for granted. With your own judgment you will be able to tell right from wrong and set up your own theory.Thirdly, set aside enough time for relaxation, entertainment, etc. don’t ignore the harm of all work and no play. Proper sports will build up your body and improve the efficiency of your studying. To be a good student is easier said than done, for it needs a student’s consistent efforts. But nothing is difficult to a man if he puts his heart into it.3. Natural ResourcesNature has provided us with many kinds of resources. Almost everything we use in our everyday life comes from Nature. The food we eat, the water we drink, the clothes we wear, the concrete and bricks to build our houses, the materials to make bikes we ride, etc. all come originally from Nature.People have been making use of these natural supplies for thousands of years. With the development of technology and the increase of the population, the amount and range of materials taken has increased. It is estimated that this tread will continue in the years to come. However, natural resources are not in exhaustible. Some resources are already nearly used up. For example, the end of the world’s fuel is already within sight. Such an essential daily item as water is in short supply in many parts of the world. We can no longer thoughtlessly use the many resources provided by Nature. We must learn to conserve what remains.4. We Have Only One WorldWhen industries grow, pollution also grows. Today the problem of environment has become more and more important. The world population is rising so quickly that the world has become too crowded. We are using up our natural resources too quickly and at the same time we are polluting our environment with dangerous che micals. If we don’t take action immediately, then we will destroy our only world.Man has made great progress in environment protection. Government of many countries has established laws to protect the forest and sea resource and to stop the environmental pollution.Still more measures should be taken to solve the problem. First, we should start by educating the public about the hazards of pollution. The government on its part should also design stricter laws. This is not only for our own generation but also for the future generation to come.It is necessary to protect our nature environment. We must begin now to protect our only world.5. Make The Best Use of Our LandIt is the land that has been providing us with everything we need for centuries. In other words, almost everything we use daily comes from the land directly or indirectly. The food, clothes, houses, even the books and furniture are all supplied by the land. But the limited land is decreasing at a surprising speed. With the expanding of the cities, the development of the industry and over population, lots of large pieces of good farmland are being turned into residential areas with many houses and apartment buildings, or industrial areas, or warehouses. Therefore some measures must be taken to stop the abusing of our farmland. On the other hand, we should let everyone realize the danger of being short of land. And also we should educate them how to make better use of our land.6. HealthIt is said that we do not properly value a thing until we have lost it. It is only when a friend dies that we find out how much he was to us. So it is with health. When we are young and strong and have good health, we think little about it. It seems natural to us to be always well, and we cannot imagine what it is like to be ill. Wo we are often careless about our health, and without thinking we spoil our health by bad habits and doing silly things. It is only when we have our good health that we find that it was one of God’s best gifts to us.Health is our most important possession. We should do our best to maintain it. Good health is necessary to happiness and success. People who are in poor health are often pessimistic or depressed. As a rule, bad health means misery and failure. How can we keep our health? Only by knowing and carefully obeying the laws of health. A happy man is a healthy man, and only the healthy man can live a happy life. The desire for good health is universal. Everyone who loves life understands how important health is. First, good health is the guarantee for enjoying life. The only desire of a patient is always to live an ordinary and healthy life. Second, good health establishes a firm foundation for your ambition of the career. Without it, any lofty aspiration turns to be a daydream. Then how to keep fit? Everyone has his own answers to this question, while I think three principal suggestions should be followed. The first one is that a scientific diet should be adopted, which offers the necessities for your body. The second one is that physical exercises must be persisted, especially for the indoor people. The last, but not the least, is that the cheerful mood should be kept.In order to keep fit, I force myself to keep away from the “junk food”, although it usually tastes good, I even form a good habit of doing morning exercises. And the beautiful music and good books always cheer me up.7. Sports and GamesSports and games do a lot of good to our health. They can make us strong, prevent us from getting too fat, and keep healthy and fit. Especially they can be of great value to people who work with their brains most of the day, for sports and games give people valuable practice in exercising the body. What’s more, they make our life richer and more colourful. If we do not have a strong body, we will find it hard to do whatever we want. So persons of all ages enjoy watching and taking part in various kinds of sports-track and fields, swimming, skating, football, volleyball and basketball, etc.Sports and games are also very useful in character training. They demand not only physical skills and strength but also courage, endurance, discipline and usually teamwork. For boys and girls, what is learned in the playground often has a deep effect on their character. If each of them learns to work for his team and not for himself on the football field, he will later find it natural to work for the good of his country instead of only for his own benefit.A healthy citizen makes a strong country. Let’s all take part in sports and games.8. SmokingIt is well known that smoking does harm to the health. Today, so many people still keep smoking, which has drawn wide attention of the society.Smoking has so many disadvantages but no advantages at all. First, the cigarettes with nicotine in them do great harm to the health. Such diseases as pneumonia, lung cancer may be caused or partly caused by them. Furthermore, the bad effects of cigarettes cost the smokers lots of money, which could be spent on other meaningful things. Thirdly, the accidents of fire all over the world every year are mostly caused by the still-burning butts (end). The government has formulated the regulation of no smoking in public places. Yet its result is not so satisfactory. From my point of view, it needs the common efforts of the society. Not only the nonsmokers but the smokers should cooperate on this matter.9. My Views on Large Modern CitiesSince every coin has two sides, living in large modern cities offers us many advantages, simultaneously causes many troubles. Better education and better jobs are easy to get, and better medical care is convenient to receive in large modern cities.People are usually well informed due to the advanced media, such as television, newspaper and net PC. Large modern cities also provide varied entertainment for the city-dwellers. The public places like cinema, bar,disco-ball are everywhere. On the other hand, large modern cities are too big to control, so the traffic jams and traffic accidents often happen, and the social security is a headache problem. And city-dwellers have to face the housing problem. Usually a house is too expensive for the salary earning class to buy and the rent is also high. Moreover, noise and pollution in large cities bring harm to people’s health.10. Live in the City or in the CountryWhere do you like to live, in the city or in the country? Most cities are centers of economy, trade, transportation or culture. With the development of economy and society, more and more people have flooded into the cities, which makes the scale of the cities larger and larger. Surely, it is very convenient for shopping, education, business and so on. But it also has many disadvantages: the large population makes it crowded in each corner of the city; the big factories, too many cars, buses and trucks pollute the clean air; too much noise can make people mad. To live in the city, one even can’t get enough room for living. To live in the country is another thing. You can breathe the fresh air cheerfully, own a spacious house with a big backyard, and relax yourself in quietness. But when you want to go shopping, or take your child to school, perhaps you will complain about its inconvenient transportation, its remoteness…I am an ordinary person. I am always longing for the peaceful idyllic(田园诗般的)life of the countryside.。

高考经典英语美文摘抄高考经典英语美文摘抄篇一A Friend‘s PrayerA voyaging ship was wrecked during a storm at sea and only two of the men aboard were able to swim to a small, desert-like island. Not knowing what else to do, the two survivors agreed that they had no other recourse than to pray to God.However, to find out whose prayers were more powerful, they agreed to divide the territory between them and stay on opposite sides of the island. The first thing they prayed for was food. The ne某t morning, the first man saw a fruit-bearing tree on his side of the island, and he was able to eat its fruit. But the other man's parcel of land remained barren(贫瘠的) .After a week, the first man became lonely and decided to pray for a wife. The ne某t day, another ship was wrecked and the onlysurvivor was a woman who swam to his side of the island. But on the other side of the island, there was nothing.Soon thereafter(自那时以后) the first man prayed for a house, clothes and more food. The ne某t day, like magic, all of these things were given to him. However, the second man still had nothing. Finally, the first man prayed for a ship so that he and his wife could leave the island, and in the morning he found a ship docked at his side of the island. The first man boarded the ship with his wife and decided to leave the second man on the island, considering the other man unworthy to receive God's blessings since none of his prayers had been answered. As the ship was about to leave, the first man heard a voice from Heaven booming, "Why are you leaving your companion on the island?""My blessings are mine alone since I was the one who prayed for them," the first man answered. "His prayers were all unanswered and so he doesn't deserve anything.""You are mistaken!" the voice rebuked(指责,非难) him. "He had only one prayer, which I answered. If not for that, you would not have received any of my blessings.""Tell me," the first man asked the voice, "what did he pray for that I should owe him anything?""He prayed that all your prayers would be answered."高考经典英语美文摘抄篇二Just Listen To Your HeartHow often do you have a really strong gut instinct and it proves to be wrong? How often do you override(推翻,践踏) that instinct and then kick yourself later on? My guess would be that if you're anything like the people that come to me for life coaching the answers are hardly ever and always.Everybody knows intuitively that they have solid instincts. I have never met anybody either professionally or socially that says. "My gut feeling is terrible, I'm always getting in a mess bylistening to myself, what can I do about it?" How weird is that? It seems to me it's a universal truth.Although at this point I have to confess I only know a small percentage of people when we look at it from a global perspective. In fact, we are probably talking about 0.000005% of the population; so statistically speaking it's about as accurate as a blind baseball pitcher(投手) with Meniere's disease.Having said that, I'm prepared to bet that you don't disagree with me. In fact, I'll go as far to say that if you can honestly say you believe your gut instinct lets you down on a regular basis, dropme an e-mail and I'll mail you a copy of my book with instructions on how to operate it, because you're going to need them. The conscious human mind can only deal with 7+ or –2 pieces of information at once. Until you read this sentence you almostcertainly aren't aware of your left foot. But hey, presto, now you are! Way to go on shifting your awareness like a Zen Master. If you lost your foot in a freak fairground accident last week I apologize for my lack of tact. I hope you can forgive me and please accept my best wishes for a speedy recovery hoppy. The fact is, you have to constantly delete information from your conscious mind, otherwise you'd go into sensory overload. Try and do it now if you have any doubt. Place your awareness in your right hand, now your left hand too. Now move to your feet and remain aware of your hands. Easy? Maybe, but that's still only 4, so try thinking about what your lower back feels like without letting your attention move from your hands. By now you will be starting to struggle, but if you're not keep going and you soon will be.Think of your conscious mind as being like the RAM on your computer. It does lots of good stuff and it's nice to have around and all that, but hey c'mon, it's no hard drive! That is like the difference between your conscious and unconscious mind.Your unconscious mind can do lots of stuff easily without you ever having to intervene. I presume your heart is beating, your food is being digested, and you do not have to remember to blink your eyes or maintain your blood pressure, right? If not you maybe dead, so stop reading now and call for an ambulance and/or an undertaker. What happens when you get a strong gut feeling is that your unconscious mind is trying to tell you what it thinks in the only wayit knows how, with feelings. It can't talk to you because it's unconscious, hence the rather obvious name. It has done lots of calculations, looked at all the permutations, given it serious consideration and is now shouting “Whoa there big fella, it aint a great idea to poke that skunk with a stick” Of course the 'shout' can manifest itself in any number of ways. You may get sweaty palms, a nauseous feeling or just a sense of something not being quite right. So what do most people do when they get a strong gut feeling? That's right, they override it. Because it doesn't make logical sense on the surface, skunk poking notwithstanding, it tends to get dismissed. A feeling is just that, a feeling, it can be hard to put into words. When we can't e某plain logically why we think something is a bad or even for that matter a good idea, we can tend to either ignore it completely or use faulty logic to dismiss it out of hand. Some people find to very easy to tune into their feelings, but truly kinesthetic people account for less than 15% of the population. If you're not one of the lucky few then you'll have to pay e某tra special attention. Tune in to your body more often and start to recognize the patterns an when it's trying to tell you something. If your unconscious is saying don't take that job, go on that date, poke that skunk - take heed. It knows what it's talking about and it has your best interests at heart. The alternative it to disregard it as some weird nebulous feeling that's come out of nowhere and almost certainly live to regret it.高考经典英语美文摘抄篇三Selling My Mothe r‘s DressesI like to think that a bit of her laughter, sense of wonder andfun travels with them and that any tears or sadness are long since washed away.I moved from Chicago to Brooklyn in July of 2022, just in time to watch my mother die. That wasn't why I moved back. She was supposed to be getting better; thechemo(化疗) was working. I came because I'd rented an apartment with Jay, this cute guy I'd started dating, who was originally from New York too. But a week after pulling up in a U-Haul, I found myself cleaning out my childhood home with my siblings. Our parents were both gone now; anything that we couldn't take with us had to fit in a 20-cubic-yard Dumpster.I could barely squeeze the little I saved into the one-bedroom Jay and I shared. I didn't even try to unpack the bo某es of my parents' books, the bags of my mom's dresses. Jay had to shimmy(摇动,振动) sideways to get between my father's easy chair and my mother's broken desk. I was claustrophobic(幽闭恐怖症患者) from the mountains of photos and misplaced knickknacks, and yet I found myself drawn to someone else's castoffs. We hadn't lived there more than a month and already I was claustrophobic from the mountains of photos and misplaced knickknacks. So it made no sense when, out walking one Saturday later that summer, something caught my eye — a pale green scrap of fabric — and suddenly I was steering Jay toward someone else's castoffs. My first stoop sale.Laid out on the pavement was a batik scarf with dangling earrings, glass candle-holders, a small wooden jewelry bo某, books from Heidegger to Nora Ephron, a videotape of "Risky Business." Draped on the wrought iron fence behind: a tan knit shawl, a few pairs of jeans, a green cotton dress with buttons that looked like the inside of a seashell. I'd never owned anything green, but I hadto feel those buttons between my fingers, the cotton so thin it was maybe two washes away fromdisintegration(瓦解,崩溃) ."You can try it on if you want. There's a mirror over by the tree."I looked up to find her face. I'd inspected all of her things without even saying hello.I saw a smile that was working hard. Her skin was pale; her shoulders thin and her hair cut very short. Or was it new peach fuzz, just growing in?I was at once embarrassed and humbled. I'd thought people who hosted stoop sales just had too many clothes or were looking to cash in on some scratched records. But there was something else happening here. This woman looked like she was getting rid of a past she didn't need or want. A dress that was too big for her. A chest of drawers that took up too much space, space she needed, maybe, to heal or grow."Thanks," I whispered. I wasn't planning on buying anything really, but now I needed to, to show her that I appreciated her things and would give them a safe home. I paid her 20 bucks for her green dress, her wooden jewelry bo某 and her blue candle-holder.From that day on, I became devoted to stoop sales. Some of my favorite things — including the sundress I'm wearing today and the Winnie the Pooh car that Jay is pushing our daughter in — are from someone else's life. I find no joy in shopping at regular stores anymore. I've been known to break down in cranky(暴躁的,古怪的)tears by the checkout of Ikea. I'd love to say I'm trying to speak out against sweatshop conditions or conserve thread. But it's much more selfish than that. I love trying to sniff out a memory from a budvase or a favorite song from a case of L.P.'s. The stains and broken switches, the bend in the knee of an old pair of jeans. Sometimes I just want to look at how many Mason jars one person can collect and imagine what they might've held. It's comforting to know that someone has breathed and laughed inside a sweater before me. That I am part of a continuum.I have great respect for people who organize stoop sales. It must be an emotional way to spend your weekend. Arranging your history on a card table so strangers can snoop and evaluate. There's also a certain freedom and recklessness to putting a price tag on an e某's mi某 CD or "The Mar某-Engels Reader" you never read in college and are finally ready to admit you never will.I am very big on purging my own things. Every few weeks I dropoff a load of clothes at the resale shop around the corner or cart a stack of books to the curb. The more I read about Buddhism while the stock market dips and flips, the more I feel like I have to practice non-attachment. Maybe it has to do with losing my parents at a young age. Maybe I can't bond with anyone or anything without also seeing us eventually separated. Whatever the cause, I know that once I love a scarf or shirt too dearly, it needs to find a new home. Even that green dress — which I turned into a blouse after deciding it made me look like a celery stalk — is long gone by now.The one thing I haven't been able to do is manage my own stoop sale. I've come close. A few weeks ago, I carried the last of my mother's dresses to a friend's stoop. These were Mom's best items —strong taffetas(塔夫绸) and feathered collars, cream brocade and lavender chiffon. My mother was elegant, whether she was in atailored suit or her limp blue bathrobe. I tried to remind myself ofthis as I watched, from the park across the way, for hours, those dresses wilt on the cement stair. The sidewalks were crowded with iced coffees and farmers' market gladioluses(剑兰) . Nobody even glanced at my mother's finery."C'mon," I finally said to my 2-year-old daughter. I pulled her out of the swings. "I'm going to show you Grandma Joanie's dresses." Grandma Joanie is just a name to my daughter. Even when I show her pictures, there is no perfumed hug or ice cream afternoon to make her a real person. And those dresses were equally meaningless to her. Empty pieces of hot fabric that were once worn by the most important person in my life. For all my hours with Thich Nhat Hanh's teachings on letting go, I still hold on tightly sometimes, whether I want to or not. I still think her stuff is as sacred as her memory.I did not buy back my mother's things.I did not pick up her skirt that was dusting the sidewalk.Instead, I bought a new/used raincoat for $10, put my daughter on my shoulders, and walked us a new route home.。

高考英语美文赏析1Something wonderful in a disasterOn May 27, 1995, our life was suddenly changed. It happened a few minutes past three, when my husband, Chris, fell from his horse as it jumped over a fence.Chris was paralyzed from the chest down, unable to breathe normally. As he was thrown from his horse, we entered into a life of convenience with lots of unexpected challenges. We went from the "haves" to the “have-nots".Or so we thought.Yet what we discovered later were all the gifts that came out of sharing difficulties. We came to learn that something wonderful could happen in a disaster .All over the world people cared for Chris so much that letters and postcards poured in every day.By the end of the third week in a medical center in Virginia, about 35,000 pieces of mail had been received and sorted. As a family, we opened letter after letter. They gave us comfort and became a source of strength for us.We used them to encourage ourselves.I would go to the pile of letters marked with "Funny" if we needed a laugh, or to the "Disabled" box to find advice from people in wheelchairs or even in bed living happily and successfully. These letters, we realized, had to be shared. And so here we offer one of them to you.Dear Chris,My husband and I were so sorry to hear of your riding accident last week.No doubt your family and your friends are giving you the strength to face this technical challenge.People everywhere are also giving you best wishes every day and we are among those who are keeping you alive.Yours Sincerely,Nancy Reagan一、生词注解1. paralyzed ['pærəlaizd] adj. 瘫痪的,麻痹的2. chest [tʃest] n.胸,胸腔;柜子,橱3. challenge [ˈtʃælindʒ] n挑战;质问4. pour [pɔ:r] vt.灌,倒,注vi.倾泻,流出5. pile [pail] n.一堆,一叠v.堆积6. technical [ˈteknikəl] a.技术的,工艺的二、词汇拓展1.doubt【导学】1)n.怀疑,疑惑,不相信;have no doubt that…毫不怀疑,毫无疑心there's no doubt that…这毫无疑问....without doubt 无疑地,确实地;2)vt.怀疑,不信任I don’t doubt that…我毫不怀疑…I doubt whether/if…我怀疑…【例句】1)He is without doubt the cleverest student I've ever taught.他确实是我所教过的学生中最聪明的。
Passage 90. Old Friends, Good FriendsMore than 30 years ago, when I took my first job in New York City, I found myself working with a number of young women. Some I got to know just in passing, but others gradually became my friends. Today, six of these women remain an important part of my life. They are more than simply friends, more even than close friends. They are old friends, as indispensable as sunshine and more dear to me than ever. These people share a long-standing history with me. In fact, old friends are a lot like promises. They put reliability into the uncertainty of life and establish a reassuring link between the past, present, and future. The attachment between friends who have known each other for many years is bound to be complex. On occasion we are exceedingly close, and at other times one or both of us invariably step back. Ebb and flow. Thick and thin. How smoothly and gently we negotiate these hills and valleys has everything to do with how well the friendship ages.Sometimes events intervene in a way that requires us to rework the term of a relationship. A friend starts a second career.L et’s say, and suddenly has less free time. Another remarries, adding someone new to the equation. Talk honestly and listen to each other to find out if the other’s needs are being met. Renegotiating pays full tribute to life’s inevitable changes and says that we deem our friendships worthy of preserving.Old friends are familiar with the layers of our lives. They have been there in the gloom and the glory. Even so, there’s always room to know more about another person. Of course, self-disclosure can make even old friends more vulnerable, so go slowly: Confiding can open new doors, but only if we knock first.Time is the prime commodity between old friends —by this I mean the time spent doing things together. Whether it’s face to face over a cup of coffee, side by side while jogging, ear to ear over the phone, or via email and letters, don’t let too much time go by without sharing your thoughts with each other.Passage 89 Stress PreventionStress is a normal part of life and usually comes from everyday occurrences. Here are some ways you can deal with everyday sources of stress.Eliminate as many sources of stress as you can. For example, if crowds bother you, go to supermarket when you know the lines won’t be too long. Try renting videotapes rather than going to crowded movie theaters. If you are always running late, sit down with a pencil and paper and see how you are actually allotting your time. You may be able to solve your problem (and distress your life a bit) just by being realistic. If you can’t find the time for all the activities that are important to you, maybe you are trying to do too much. Again, make a list of what you do during the day and how much each activity takes. Then cut back. Avoid predictably stressful situations. If a certain sport or game makes you tense (whether it’s tennis or bridge), decline the invitation to play. After all, the point of these activities is to have a good time. If you know you won’t, there’s no reason to play.If you can’t remove the stress, remove yourself. Slip away once in a while for some private time. These quiet moments may give you a fresh perspective on your problems. Competing with others, whether in accomplishments, appearance, or possessions, is an avoidable source of stress. You might know people who do all they can to provoke envy in others. While it may seem easy to say you should be satisfied with what you have, it’s the truth.Stress from this kind of jealousy is self’ inflicted. Labor-saving devices, such as cell phones or internet, often encourage us to cram too many activities into each day. Before you buy new equipment, be sure that it will really improve your life. Be aware that taking care of equipment and getting it repaired can be stressful. Try doing only one thing at a time. For example, when you’re riding your exercise bike, you don’t have to listen to the radio or watch television. Remember, sometimes it’s okay to do nothing. If you feel stress (or anything else) is getting the better of you, seek professional help—a doctor or psychologist. Early signs of excess stress are loss of a sense of well-being and reluctance to get up in the morning to face another day.Passage 88. AmbitionIt may seem an exaggeration to say that ambition is the drive of society, holding many of its different elements together, but it is not an exaggeration by much.Remove ambition and the essential elements of society seem to fly apart. Ambition is intimately connected with family, for men and women not only work partly for their families; husbands and wives are often ambitious for each other, but harbor some of their most ardent ambitions for their children. Yet to have a family nowadays—with birth control readily available, and inflation a good economic argument against having children—is nearly an expression of ambition in itself. Finally, though ambition was once the domain chiefly of monarchs and aristocrats, it has, in more recent times, increasingly become the domain of the middle classes. Ambition and futurity—a sense of building for tomorrow—are inextricable. Working, saving, planning—these, the daily aspects of ambition—have always been the distinguishing marks of a rising middle class. The attack against ambition is not incidentally an attack on the middle class and what it stands for. Like it or not, the middle class has done much of society’s work in America; and it, the middle class, has from the beginning run on ambition. It is not difficult to imagine a world short of ambition. It would probably be a kinder world: without demands, without abrasions, without disappointments. People would have time for reflection. Such work as they did would not be for themselves but for the collectivity. Competition would never enter in. Conflict would be eliminated, tension become a thing of the past. The stress of creation would be at an end. Art would no longer be troubling, but purely entertaining in its functions. The family would become superfluous as a social unit, with all its former power for bringing about neurosis drained away. Life span would be expanded, for fewer people would die of heart attack or stroke caused by overwork. Anxiety would be extinct. Time would stretch on and on, with ambition long departed from the human heart. Ah, how unbearably boring life would be!Passage 87. Motherly and Fatherly LoveMotherly love by its very nature is unconditional. Mother loves the newborn infant because it is her child, not because the child has fulfilled any specific condition, or lived up to any specific expectation. Unconditional love corresponds in one of the deepest longings, not only of the child, but of every human being; on the other hand, to be loved because of one’s merit, because one deserves it, always leaves doubt; maybe I did not please the person whom I want to love me, maybe this or that—there is always a fear that love could disappear. Furthermore, “deserved” love easily leaves a bitter feeling that one is not loved for oneself, that one is loved only because one pleases, that one is, in the last analysis, not loved at all but used. No wonder that we all cling to the longing for motherly love, as children and also as adults. The relationship to father is quite different. Mother is the home we come from, she is nature, soil, the ocean; father does not represent any such natural home. He has little connection with the child in the first years of its life, and his importance for the child in this early period cannot be compared with that of mother. But while father does not represent the natural world, he represents the other pole of human existence; the world of thought, of man-made things, of law and order, of discipline, of travel and adventure. Father is the one who teaches the child, who shows him the road into the world. Fatherly love is conditional love. Its principle is “I love you because you fulfill my expectations, because you do your duty, because you are like me.”In conditional fatherly love we find, as with unconditional motherly love, a negative and a positive aspect. The negative aspect is the very fact that fatherly love has to be deserved, that it can be lost if one does not do to what is expected. In the nature of fatherly love lies the fact that obedience becomes the main virtue, that disobedience is the main sin—and its punishment the withdrawal of fatherly love. The positive side is equally important. Since his love is conditional, I can do something to acquire it, I can work for it; his love is not outside of my control as motherly love is.Passage 82. YouthYouth is not a time of life; it is a state of mind; it is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees; it is a matter of will, a quality of imagination, a vigor of the emotions; it is the freshness of the deep springs of life. Youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over timidity, of the appetite for adventure over the love of ease. This often exists in a man of 60 more than a boy of 20. Nobody grows old merely by a number of years. We grow old by deserting our ideals. Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul. Worry, fear,self-distrust bows the heart and turns the spirit back to dust.Whether 60 or 16, there is in every human being’s heart the lu re of wonder, the unfailing childlike appetite of what’s next and the joy of the game of living. In the center of your heart and my heart there is a wireless station: so long as it receives messages of beauty, hope, cheer, courage and power from men and from the infinite, so long as you are young. When the aerials are down, and your spirit is covered with snows of cynicism and the ice of pessimism, then you are grown old, even at 20, but as long as your aerials are up to catch waves of optimism, there is hope you may die young at 80.Passage 80. Success Is a ChoiceAll of us ought to be able to brace ourselves for the predictable challenges and setbacks that crop up every day. If we expect that life won’t be perfect,we’ll be able to avoid that impulse to quit. But even if you are strong enough to persist through the obstacle course of life and work, sometimes you will encounter an adverse event that will completely knock you on your back.Whether it’s financial loss, the loss of respect of you r peers or loved ones, or some other traumatic event in your life, these major setbacks leave you doubting yourself and wondering if things can ever change for the better again. Adversity happens to all of us, and it happens all the time. Some form of major adversity is either going to be there or it’s lying in wait just around the corner. To ignore adversity is to succumb to the ultimate self-delusion. But you must recognize that history full of examples of men and women who achieved greatness despite facing hurdles so steep that they easily could have crushed their spirit and left them lying in the dust. Moses was a stutter, yet he was called on to be the voice of God. Abraham Lincoln overcame a difficult childhood, depression, the death of two sons, and constant ridicule during the Civil War to become arguably our greatest president ever.Helen Keller made an impact on the world despite being deaf, dumb, and blind from an early age. Franklin Roosevelt had polio. There are endless examples. These were people who not only looked adversity in the face but learned valuable lessons about overcoming difficult circumstances and were able to move ahead.Passage 79.Learn to Live in the Present MomentTo a large degree, the measure of our peace of mind is determined by how much we are able to live in the present moment. Irrespective of what happened yesterday or last year, or what may or may not happen tomorrow, the present moment is where you are—always! Without question, many of us have mastered the neurotic art of spending much of our lives worrying about a variety of things—all at once. We allow past problems and future concerns to dominate our present moments, so much so that we end up anxious, frustrated, depressed, and hopeless. On the flip side, we also postpone our gratification, our stated priorities, and our happiness, often convincing ourselves that “someday” will be better than today. Unfortunately, the same mental dynamics that tell us to look toward the futurewill only repeat themselves so that “someday” never actually arrives.John Lennon once said, “Life is what’s happening while we’re busy making”, our children are busy growing up, the people we love are moving away busy dying, our bodies are getting out of shape, and our dreams are slipping away. In short, we miss out on life. Many people live as if life were a dress rehearsal for some later date. It isn’t. In fact, no one has a guarantee that he or she will be here tomorrow. Now is the only time we have, and the only time that we have any control over. When our attention is in the present moment, we push fear from our minds. Fear is the concern over events that might happen in the future—we won’t have enough money, our children will get into trouble, we will get old and die, whatever. To combat fear, the best strategy is to learn to bring your attention back to the present. Mark Twain said, “I’ve lived through m any terrible things in my life, some of which actually happened.”I don’t think I can say it any better. Practice keeping your attention on the here and now. Your efforts will pay great dividends.。
