通常，可将形容词分成性质形容词和叙述形容词两类：性质形容词和叙述形容词。

直接说明事物的性质或特征的形容词是性质形容词，它有级的变化，可以用程度副词修饰，在句中可作定语、表语和补语。

叙述形容词只能作表语，所以又称为表语形容词。

这类形容词没有级的变化，也不可用程度副词修饰。

大多数以a开头的形容词都属于这一类。

形容词修饰名词不一定都放在名词前面,通常分为下列几种修饰方式：形容词作定语一般放在限定词之后，名词中心词之前。

但是，有些形容词或形容词构成的词组在某些情况下只能作后置定语，不能前置，大致有如下几种情况： 1．形容词修饰呼唤词或官衔时后置。

如：Lady Sweet，postmaster general，Smith majoro2．以字母a开头的形容词常作后置定语。

常见的有：alive，asleep，afraid，ashamed，awake，ahead，ablaze，alone等。

如：Nobody alive could be wiser than he．There is danger ahead on this road．3．在由some，any，no等构成的合成词，形容词作后置定语。

如：I'll do everything possible to help you．我会尽力帮助你4．形容词在某些搭配中作后置定语。

如：the sum total，总数； the third person singular第三人称单数；the president elect／designate 当选总统；notary public公证人等。

5．形容词deep,high,long,old,tall,thick,wide等常用在尺寸、大小、长(宽、深)度等度量衡的名词或表示年龄的名词后面作定语。
