It has over 500 projects in 72 countries in Asia, Africa, South America, the Middle East and Eastern Europe. Every year CARE helps to improve the lives of nearly 30 million of the world's poorest people.Although CARE receives money from wealthy developed countries and international institutions such as the United Nations, it is an independent organisation and no governments control it. Millions of dollars are also given by private companies andordinary people around the world.CARE's goal is to reduce poverty and hunger in developing countries and therefore increase the life expectancy of the inhabitants of these countries. The organisation has offices in 11 countries around the world and its permanent workers organise the development programmes. Thousands of CARE volunteers work with local people on a variety of projects in the areas of education, agriculture, health care, water safety and building businesses. Here are some examples of CARE projects. In some places there is disease because people drink dirty water. In Kenya(肯尼亚),volunteers are working with local people to improve water systems in 48 villages. In Bangladesh(孟加拉国), although there is plenty of water, in many places it is not safe to drink. CARE lends people money to start small businesses and its volunteers teach them basic financial skills. A programme in Bolivia is helping poor people develop a successful tourist project so they can increase their incomes.CARE works with farmers to improve agriculture and produce more food. Both played an important, although indirect, role in lowering the birth rate.Brazil is one of the world's biggest producers of soap operas.Globo,Brazil's most popular television network, shows three hours of soaps six nights a week, while three others show at least one hour a night. Most soaps are based on wealthy characters living the high life in big cities.“Altho ugh they have never really tried to work in a message towards the problems of reproduction(生育),they describe middle and upper class values-not many children, different attitudes towards sex, women working,”says Martine.“They sent this message to all parts of Brazil and made people realize other patterns of family life and other values, which were put into a very attractive package.”Meanwhile, the installment plans tried to encourage the poor to be come consumers. “This led to change in consumption(消费) patterns and consumption did not get along well with unlimited reproduction,”says Martine.1.The underlined phra se “puts it down to” is closest in meaning to “________”.A.considers the cause of it to beB.finds it a reason forC.looks it on asD.compares it to2.Soap operas have helped in lowering Brazil's birth rate because ________.A.they keep people sitting long hours watching TVB.they have gradually changed people's way of lifeC.people are drawn to their attractive packageD.they make birth control measures popular3.What is Martine's conclusion about Brazil's population growth?A.The increase in birth rate will increase consumption.B.The desire for consumption helps to reduce birth rate.C.Consumption patterns and reproduction patterns are contradictory.D.A country's production is limited by its population growth.4.Which is the BEST title of the passage?A.Brazil:the developing world's successB.Soap Operas And Installment PlansC.Brazil:reducing birth rate by accidentD.Learn from Brazil, one of the Third World Countries5.From the passage, we can conclude that ________.A.India have reduced birth rates by accident, tooB.many other Third World countries are suffering a population growth rate now C.Brazil government's achieved a success reducing the birth rate purposely D.Brazil has successfully reduced population growth-but more by accident than designBRobert Freddy was general manager of a large hotel in Ashbury Park,New Jersey. One cold day two years ago when he stopped his car at a traffic light,Stephen Pearman,an outofwork taxi and truck driver, walked up to Freddy's car hoping to earn some change by washing his windshield (挡风玻璃).Like many motorists who try to keep the beggars off,Freddy turned on the wipers to show he wasn't interested.Pearman put his head close to the window.“Come on,mister.Give me a chance.I need a job,”he said.Something in Stephen Pearman's voice moved Robert Freddy. In the seconds before traffic started moving again,Freddy handed Pearman a business card and told him to call if he was serious.“My friend s told me he was just pulling my leg,”said Pearman.“But I said,‘No,he's a businessman.I need to give it a shot.”Two days later,29yearold Pearman appeared in the manager's office of the big hotel.Freddy gave him a job and housing and lent him pocket money while training him.Today Pearman works full time setting up the hotel's dining halls for business meetings. In the past two years,he has found a flat, married and repaid Freddy's loans.“Mr.Freddy gave me a second chance,”says Pearman,“And I took advantage of it.I could have just come here a while, eaten up and left. But there is no future in washing windshields.”Ordinarily,Freddy keep s away from the street people.“But Pear man seemed so honest and open, asking for a chance rather than just money,”Freddy says,“I don't hand my business card to just anybody. But I'm glad I did in this case.”6.When Pearman first appeared before Freddy,________.A.Freddy took him as a beggarB.Pearman was told to do it laterC.Freddy gladly agreed to let him do itD.Pearman knew Freddy was a kind man7.When Freddy told Pearman to call if he was serious,Freddy meant if ________.A.Pearman was really hardworkingB.Pearman was really looking for a jobC.Pearman's conditions were truly seriousD.Pearman was really interested in washing windshields8.By saying “he was ju st pulling my leg(Para.3)”,Pearman's friends meant ________.A.Freddy knew Pearman intended to ask for a jobB.Freddy was making fun of PearmanC.Freddy wanted to help the poorD.Freddy was tired of being stopped9.Pearman is now ________.A.in charge of Freddy's loansB.still washing car windshieldsC.fulltime employed at the hotelD.arranging dinner parties for the hotel10.What can we learn about Freddy?A.He helps those who will work hard themselves.B.He likes to give his help to anyone in need.C.He always gives help to the unemployed.D.He is easily moved by poor people.Ⅳ.翻译句子1.她买了一套靠近她办公室的单元房。
