I was so excited because I love learning about history and seeing cool artifacts from long ago. The museum is huge, with lots of different exhibits to explore. When we first went inside, we saw this massive dinosaur skeleton in the main hall! It was a Mamenchisaurus, which is a really long-necked dinosaur that lived in China millions of years ago. The skeleton was so tall that I had to crane my neck way up to see its head. My dad told me that dinosaur fossils like these help scientists learn about creatures that roamed the earth before humans existed. How amazing is that? After gawking at the dinosaur for a while, we headed to the Ancient Chu Culture exhibit. Chu was one of the major states during the Zhou Dynasty, which ruled parts of China from around 1046 BC to 256 BC. This exhibit had all sorts of neat artifacts from back then, like beautiful jade carvings, intricate bronze wares, and elaborate tombs. My favorite thing was probably the Baohuang Tomb No. 2, which is this huge burial pit that archaeologists uncovered in the 1990s. It was filled with thousands of fancy items that some ancient king or prince was buried with, like musical instruments, chariots, weapons, and decorations. I couldn't believe how much stuff was crammed in there! The tomb shows how powerful and wealthy the Chu rulers must have been.In another section, there were displays about traditional Chinese performing arts like opera, puppetry, and acrobatics. I got to see colorful opera costumes and masks up close. There was even a little puppet theater set up where you could watch a short traditional puppet show. The puppets were so detailed and expressive! After the show, I tried my hand at using some rod puppets myself. It was really tricky to make them move smoothly, but fun to experiment. We also visited the galleries about ethnic minorities in Hubei province. China has 56 recognized ethnic groups, and many of them have lived in Hubei for centuries. The exhibits showcased the unique cultures, customs, arts, and ways of life of groups like the Tujia, Miao, Dong, and Muslim Hui people. I loved admiring all the bright, intricate embroidery and weavings they had on display. One room even had life-size dioramas set up to depict different ethnic villages and daily activities. One diorama showed a Tujia brocade-making workshop, with little figures weaving the colorful silk patterns on looms. Another recreated a Miao village celebration, with people in traditional dress dancing and playing instruments. Viewing those scenes made me feel like I had traveled back in time to those ancient cultures.Towards the end of our museum trip, we went through the modern history section, which chronicles major events in Hubei from the late 1800s to present day. There were exhibits about the Wuchang Uprising that helped spark the Xinhai Revolution to overthrow the Qing Dynasty in 1911. We saw weapons, uniforms, and photographs from that era. There was also a really sobering area about the devastating Wuhan floods of 1931 and wars that ravaged the region duringthe 20th century. But the exhibits didn't just focus on conflicts –they also highlighted achievements like Hubei's economic growth, infrastructure projects, sports teams, and scientific advancements over the decades. Learning about both the struggles and progress of the province was really interesting. After hours of exploring, my brain was stuffed full of new knowledge, just like that Ancient Chu tomb! I had such an amazing time seeing all the incredible artifacts and learning so much about Hubei's rich history and cultures. The Hubei Provincial Museum is massive, but we only scratched the surface.I already can't wait to go back and discover more fascinating pieces of the past!。

Suizhou County lies in about 155 km northwest of Wuhan City in north-central Hubei Province. This tomb belonged to Marquis Yi of Zeng state. Marquis Yi was a host of a lesser state during the Warring States period of the Eastern Zhou dynasty. How to know the name of the owner and the date of the tomb?As for the name of owner: A number of the objects were unearthed from the tomb carry inscriptions. Most inscriptions record a same name, that is “Marquis Yi of Zeng”. For example, on a bronze vessel wrote “Made by Marquis Yi of Zeng state for his eternal use‟; on some weapons wrote “Halberds used by Marquis Yi‟s guards”; “Long pike of Marquis Yi”. It shows that most objects of this tomb belong to Marquis Yi of Zeng state, namely the owner of this tomb.As for the date of tomb: In the center position of the Chime Bells, there is a Bo bell which carries a thirty-one characters inscription. The inscription states that this Bo Bell was presented by King Hui of Chu state as a gift to Marquis Yi of Zeng state, the Chu‟s neighboring state, in the 56th year of the reign of King Hui. This date corresponds to 433 BC. According to this fact, it can be concluded that the date of this bomb is about 2400 years ago.More than 15,000 relics were excavated from this tomb, including bronze ritual vessels, musical instruments, gold and jade decorative items, lacquered utensils and inscribed bamboo slips. This is a model of chamber. The shape of the tomb is unregular polygon. The tomb is 21 m long from east to west and 16.5 m wide form north to south, with 11 m deep from the current mouth to the bottom. The whole area of the tomb is 220 ㎡. The owner‟s coffin and 8 attendant coffins and one dog attendant coffin are in the eastern chamber. Another 13 attendant coffins are in the western chamber. These 21 sacrificed attendants are female maids or performers. Among them, the oldest one was about 25 years old and the youngest one was about 13 years old. It is supposed that they were killed by poison. The central chamber is the largest one, a lot of bronze ritual vessels and the famous Chime Bells were excavated from here. These musical instruments were arranged in perfect order as if the tomb was an ancient concert hall.Altogether more than 4,700 pieces of weapons placed in piles were found in northern chamber, which is just like a weapon-store room. This is a bronze crane--like figure with deer antlers. The sculpture is an imaginary auspicious creature. It consists of deer‟s antler, crane‟s body and bird‟s feet. It bears both the symbolic of luckiness and goodwill of deer and longevity of crane. When excavated, it was place d near the owner‟s coffin, acting as a guard for the dead body, or carrying the soul to the heaven. This is a set of ritual vessels named 9 Ding and 8 Gui.Whereas Ding was the ritual vessel for boiling meat and fish, Gui served as a container for filling grain. Ding and Gui arrangement is a set of important ritual vessel in ancient China. At that time only the king and the noble had the right to use Ding and Gui arrangement. The number in each set indicated the rank of their owner. For example, only t he kings had the right to use …9 Ding and 8 Gui‟ arrangement, dukes and princes were onlyallowed to use …7 Ding and 6 Gui‟ arrangement. Although the owner of this tomb was marquis ranking below the king, he still chose to use …9 Ding and 8 Gui‟ arrangement. This phenomenon of overstepping one‟s authority reflected a change in society at that time. Here is the famous Chime Bells of the Marquis Yi of Zeng state. The whole set of bells have 65 pieces and divided into three rows: the upper row, the middle row and the lower row. There are 19 Niu bells in the upper row, 33 Yong bells in the middle row and 12 big Yong bells in the lower row. In addition, there is a single large Bo bell in the middle of the lower row. This Bo Bell was presented by King Hui of Chu state as a gift to Marquis Yi of Zeng state. All of these bells were cast from bronze and the total weight is more than 2,500 kg. The frame consists of bronze and wood. The crossbeam was made of wood. This is a reproductionAmong these bells, the largest bell is 153.4 cm tall and weighs 203.6 kg, while the smallest bell is 20.4 cm tall and weighs 2.4 kg.When excavated, 6 T-shaped wooden mallets and 2 wooden poles were found near the rack. They are instruments of playing the bells. It is believed that all of these implements were used in the musical performance. The bells need five persons to play. Two persons stand in front of the bells, holding the long poles to strike the large bells in the lower row. Three persons stand behind the bells, taking the mallets to beat bells in the upper and the middle row, which is the main part of the performance. All of the bells carry inscriptions related to musical temperament .The most marvelous characteristic of these bells is that each bell can produce two tones, and there are three different scales interval of the two tones. Through much research we have ascertained that the vibration frequency of this set of bells is very close to today‟s C-major 7-Tone scale.Although these bells were buried in the earth for more than 2400 years, the musical performance of the bells is still very good. They can be played the Chinese and Western, ancient and modern music. This is Bianqing. The Bianqing is stone chime. There are 32 pieces stone chimes of this set. Most of them were made of limestones, a few of them were made of marble. The 32 stone chimes are divided into an upper and lower row hanging from a bronze rack. The whole rack includes 2 side supports and 2 crossbeams. This side support is a strange c reature with a dragon‟s head, crane‟s neck, bird‟s body and turtle‟s feet. When excavated, most of the 32 stones have been broken. The stones exhibited here are reproductions. However, the rack is very well preserved because which is made of bronze. That‟s all for my explanation about Hubei Province Museum, now let‟s go to the concert hall to enjoy the music played with Chime bells and some other music instruments.。
