As I turned the final page of "The Rose," a profound sense of tranquility washed over me, leaving me in a state of reflective contemplation. This English classic, written by an anonymous author, is a poem that explores the intricate beauty and symbolism of the rose, a flower that has captivated hearts and minds for centuries. The poem begins with a simple yet elegant description of the rose, its petals unfolding like the pages of a storybook, revealing layers of meaning and symbolism. The rose is not just a flower; it is a metaphor for love, beauty, and the fleeting nature of life. The author's use of vivid imagery and powerful language creates a vivid picture in the reader's mind, evoking emotions and sensations that are both familiar and yet transcendent. One of the most striking aspects of the poem is its ability to evoke a sense of nostalgia. As I read, I found myself transported to a different time and place, where roses bloomed in gardens and love stories unfolded against their backdrop. The rose, with its timeless beauty, becamea bridge between the past and the present, connecting me to a world that existed beyond the confines of the page. The poem also explores the idea of impermanence. The rose, though beautiful, is also fragile and prone to decay. This transient nature of beauty is a powerful reminder of the fleetingness of life and the importance of cherishing every moment. The rose, in its短暂的美麗,becomes a symbol of the brevity and preciousness of existence. The poetic style of "The Rose" is both elegant and accessible. The language is rich in imagery and metaphor, yet the poem flows smoothly, making it easy to lose oneself in the beauty of the words. The rhyme scheme and meter add to the poem's musicality, creating a harmonious and captivating experience for the reader.Reading "The Rose" in English was a unique and rewarding experience. It not only allowed me to appreciate the beauty of the poem but also to delve into the nuances of the language. The precision and elegance of the English language, particularly in poetry, are truly remarkable. The poem's ability to evoke such strong emotions and sensationsthrough simple words is a testament to the power ofliterature and the beauty of language. In conclusion, "The Rose" is a timeless classic that deserves to be read and re-read. It is a poem that speaksto the heart and soul, evoking emotions and sensations that are both profound and transcendent. Reading it in English was an enriching experience that allowed me to appreciate not only the beauty of the poem but also the beauty of the language itself.**《英语玫瑰》读后感:对文学之美的反思**当我翻完《英语玫瑰》的最后一页时,一股深深的宁静涌上心头,让我陷入了反思的沉思。
A Review of “t he Nightingale and the Rose”1. IntroductionThis story was mainly about a young student fell in love with a girl and tried to please her. In order to express his love for the girl, he needed to give her a red rose. However, it was a cold winter, and it was not possible for him to find a red rose. So he was very sad and sat on the ground crying. All the pedestrians laughed at him, only a kind-hearted nightingale was impressed by his love and sympathized with his sufferings. Hence, the little bird decided to find a red rose to help the student to realize his dream of love. She begged the rose tree over and over again hoping to get a red rose, which only ended up in failure. Finally, the nightingale found a red rose tree below the window of the student with the help of a yellow rose tree. But the red rose tree rejected the nightingale and told her that the winter chilled her veins, and frost nipped her buds, and storm broken her branches, and she would have no roses all this year. But, the red roses could be made by the moon light and the nightingale’s blood. The nightingale needed to put her heart against the thorn of the rose tree and sang all the night until her blood became the rose’s. Confronted with the choice of live or death, the little nightingale agreed with the rose tree which was at the cost of her own life. The young student expressed his love with the red rose but rejected by the girl, and the precious red rose became overshadowed and worthless at that moment. (Wilde, 2001).2. Review of “the Nightingale and the Rose”This is a tragedy of love. For the nightingale, the love which exchanges with her life is trampled. For the young student, the love which he pays sincerity still can not impress the girl. Oscar Wilde once said: there are two tragedies in life: the one what you want but can not get and the one what you get but do not want. (Ellmann, 2013). This seems a contradictory sentence but reveals Oscar Wilde’s infinite pursuit to beauty.“The nightingale and the rose” is a mockery fairy story to love which is also a pursuitof the aestheticism of love. (Freedman, 1993). The title is named by the nightingale which is famous for its singing and the rose which is famous for its attractive color. Just taking a perspective of the topic, it is easy to arouse the readers’ beautiful reverie. This work, with the theme of love, shows several kinds of beauty.2.1 Beauty of ImagesThe author has cudgeled his brains on the choice of the symbolic image in it. One is a singing nightingale and the other is a red rose representing love. The image has charmed the readers apart from the tragic and poignant plot. The nightingale pierced the thorn into her heart in order to water the rose and the rose burst into gorgeous flowers for gratitude, which are heartbreaking.2.2 Beauty of Artistic ConceptionArtistic conception is the refraction of vitality which is the unity of subject and object. In the work of “the nightingale and the rose”, the author makes the white roses like the waves of the sea, the yellow roses like the blonde hair of the mermaid and the red rose like the feet of the dove. A series of different colors can make a clear contrast with the phenomenon of the natural world and form an elegantly and witty picture in the work which is the artistic conception created by the author. And a good artistic conception likes a beacon which can take the readers travel through the work and do not lost exploration direction. (Freedman, 1993).2.3 Beauty of MindThe beauty of mind is really beautiful which can be eternal. If the soul is not beautiful, a gorgeous appearance can not cover the dirty soul. The leading role of “the nightingale and the rose” is the nightingale wh o is kind-hearted and willing to help others at the cost of a thorn piercing her body. Even her throat had been cut to bloody, she resolutely and loudly sang the praises of life.2.4 Beauty of TragedyFrom the end of “the nightingale and the rose”, the sacrifice of the nightingale can be seen, which is the seed of a tragedy. And the young student kept thinking about the girl and he tried to do something impossible just because of the girl’s words. He finally found a red rose with the nightingale’s help, but he was eventually rejected bythe girl. Behind these events, the seeds of tragedy actually have already been deeply buried, no matter how the roses root and burst, no matter how hard the student tries, it still can not escape from the fate of the tragic reality. Though the nightingale’s death is sad, people can feel a kind of lofty which can let the reader s’mind purified and psychology satisfied, firmly believe in goodness and beauty. One experiences a tragic pleasure, but ultimately achieves dramatic effect. The nightingale was stabbed in the heart and the readers also felt a stabbing pain at the same time. This is the image of death which brings the awakening of the soul. (Willoughby, 1993).3. ConclusionThe people who read Oscar Wilde’s “the Nightingale and the Rose” each time may have some new feelings. The image of the nightingale who is kind and compassionate is loved by many readers. Though ultimately ending up with the disillusionment of love, the nightingale still made beautiful songs of love. She likes a meteor across the sky, fleeting, but leaves a string of mark which can prove the existence of her own; She likes a gorgeous firework, burning out at the last minute of life, but also do not forget to bright.
Document:After reading "The Nightingale and the Rose," a short story by Oscar Wilde, I was deeply moved by its timeless message about the nature of love and the pursuit of beauty. The story revolves around a Chinese emperor who is captivated by the song of a nightingale, but is eventually lured away by the beauty of a red rose. The nightingale, willing to sacrifice its life for the sake of love, offers its song to the emperor, while the rose, symbolizing temporary beauty, ultimately fails to satisfy the emperor"s true desires. This tale raises questions about the essence of beauty and the value of genuine love.Wilde suggests that true beauty is not merely physical or superficial, but rather, it is found in the intangible, such as the nightingale"s melodious song. The story also highlights the contrast between the artificial and the authentic, as the emperor is initially attracted to the rose"s external beauty, but ultimately finds it lacking depth and meaning. Moreover, the story delves into the concept of sacrifice and the importance of valuing the substance over the appearance. The nightingale"s selfless act of giving its life for love demonstrates the true nature of sacrifice, while the rose, which is merely a symbol of temporarypleasure, fails to embody this same level of dedication.Ultimately, "The Nightingale and the Rose" serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of discerning between true beauty and momentary attractions. It encourages us to look beyond the surface and to appreciate the depth and authenticity of love and beauty.Wilde"s story is a timeless gem that continues to resonate with readers, reminding us of the timeless nature of love and the pursuit of beauty.
I read the Chinese version of “Camille” a few years ago. At that time I was deeply moved by the main character Marguerite Gautier. “Camille” or “The Lady of the Camellias” by Alexandre Dumas, fils, is the story of Marguerite Gautier, a young courtesan, or kept woman, in Paris in the mid 1800's, and how she falls in love with a young man, Armand Duval, and then tries to escape from her questionable past. Unfortunately, it comes back to haunt her and she ends up returning to that life and dies painfully and alone, but with the knowledge that she was a noble woman at heart. When I first began to read the book, I did not care for Marguerite or her attitude or lifestyle, but as I got further into the narrative, I realized that her saucy attitude was a front to cover the lonely woman that she really was. She felt used, abused and unloved, until the gentle Armand Duval came into her life and showed her that he loved her as a person and not for what she could do for him. It must have taken great courage for Marguerite to leave the life she had lived for so long, knowing all along that it was probably too good to be true and would not last indefinitely. And it also showed that Marguerite really loved Armand Duval for she could even change herself for him. However, happiness didn’t last for long. When M. Duval, Armand's father, came to her, pleading for her to leave Armand to save both Armand's reputation and that of his younger innocent sister, Marguerite saw a way to become pure of heart, if not in body. She felt that it was her duty, because she loved Armand so much, to do this even though it meant giving up her own happiness and hurting Armand temporarily. She reluctantly returned to her former life, knowing that some day Armand would forgive her. Sadly, she died in debt and basically alone, except for her one female friend, Julie Duprat, who helped her during her illness. She had her journal sent to Armand after her death, explaining why she had made the choices she had. I think Dumas's last few lines about Marguerite being the exception, not the rule were quite true, and I also agreed with his view that while her lifestyle could not be condoned, we as a society assume that allof these type of women are cold and heartless, while this may not always be the case. A person can make the wrong choices in life when they are young, and try to redeem themselves, but sometimes past situations prevent them from changing their lives, even though they desperately wish to do so. This applies to both men and women in many different types of circumstances: involvement in crime; drug or alcohol abuse; gambling; prostitution; financial problems; poor marriage choices; etc. And this is the fact, which exists in the whole society. As far as the other characters in the book, I think Marguerite was right in saying that no one truly cared about her, but only wanted something from her, the only exceptions being Armand and Julie Duprat. Of course, the Comte de G. and Comte de N. wanted her body and appearance. The Duke needed to “wake up and smell the coffee” and realize that she could never replace his dead daughter. If he truly cared, he could have helped her leave her lifestyle without “keeping” her himself. And lastly, Prudence was a blood-sucking leech who used Marguerite almost worse than the men. I also think shewas jealous of the fact that Marguerite had so much more courage than herself and someone truly loved her.
