In 1981 a movie was made called Chariots of Fire. It told the true story of two runners, Eric Liddell and Harold Abrahams.

Eric Liddell was born in China in 1902. His parents were Scottish missionaries in China.

Even as a boy, Eric ran very fast. He was so fast that people called him the “Flying

Scotsm an.”

In 1924 Eric qualified for the Olympic team in Paris. Eric planned to compete in many races. His main race was going to be the 100 meters. Everyone believed that he would win

the race.

The race was scheduled for a Sunday. Eric, a very religious man, believed that it was wrong to run on Sunday. He decided to drop out of the event and run another race on another day.

Harold Abrahams also took part in the 1924 Olympics. Another very fast runner, he went to a school in England called Cambridge. When he started school, Harold made sure everyone knew he was a runner.

Harold had always dreamed of running at the Olympics. His aim was to beat Eric in the 100-meter race. They had raced each other before the Olympics; Harold had lost. Harold wanted to beat Eric at the Olympics.

Harold never got the chance to race Eric at the Olympics, because Eric had withdrawn from the 100-meter race. Harold beat all the other men in the race. He won the gold medal for winning the 100 meters.

A week later, Eric ran the 400-meter race. He broke the Olympic and world records for

the 400 meters.

Both men were running for Great Britain’s team. Great Britain surprised everyone by winning almost all of the running events that year.
