原汁原味外刊阅读及模拟强化训练We are learning more and more every dayabout just how smart some animals are: apes, octopuses, some species of birds, dogs, cats. Buthow about other animals? Snails? Mosquitos? They sure seem less smart. Still smarter than plantsthough. Because it would be difficult to argue thatplants are intelligent. Or would it?In a new study, it was shown that plants emitsounds when they are distressed. And these soundsare very different depending on whether they haverecently been cut or whether they don't haveenough water. The sounds are not audible to the human ear, as they are between 20 and 100 kilohertz, which is above the threshold of human hearing (which usually has the upper limit of 15-17 kilohertz). These are fascinating results. But we should be careful with what the study shows and what it doesn't. It is tempting to frame these results as "crying" and that is exactly what the popular science press has been doing. Plants don't suffer in silence: they are screaming with pain. This is a beautiful illustration of how easily we slip into anthropomorphizing not just animals, but also plants. Anthropomorphism is the attitude of attributing human-like features and mental states to animals (and plants). It has been widely discredited in biology as an unproductive method for finding out more about animal cognition (and also about how plants function). (A much more promising method would be the exact opposite of anthropomorphism, what could be called zoomorphism, when we attribute features and mental states that we know from the study of animals to humans.)Anthropomorphism makes it easier to relate to findings like the one about plants emitting sound —crying in distress is something that resonates with us more than the scientific language读后强化训练I. 单句语法填空1. 高考英语一轮总复习必修第一册提能训练:Unit 4 Natural DisastersⅠ.阅读理解A(2024·浙江1月高考题) On September 7, 1991, the costliest hailstorm (雹暴) in Canadian history hit Calgary's southern suburbs. As a result, since 1996 a group of insurance companies have spent about $2 million per year on the Alberta Hail Suppression Project. Airplanes seed threatening storm cells with a chemical to make small ice crystals fall as rain before they can grow into dangerous hailstones. But farmers in east-central Alberta—downwind of the hail project flights—worry that precious moisture (水分) is being stolen from their thirsty land by the cloud seeding.Norman Stienwand, who farms in that area, has been addressing public meetings on this issue for years. “Basically, the provincial government is letti ng the insurance companies protect the Calgary-Edmonton urban area from hail,” Mr. Stienwand says, “but they're increasing drought risk as far east as Saskatchewan.”The Alberta hail project is managed by Terry Krauss, a cloud physicist who works for Weath er Modification Inc. of Fargo, North Dakota. “We affect only a very small percentage of the total moisture in the air, so we cannot be causing drought,” Dr. Krauss says. “In fact, we may be helping increase the moisture downwind by creating wetter ground.”One doubter about the safety of cloud seeding is Chuck Doswell, a research scientist who just retired from the University of Oklahoma. “In 1999, I personally saw significant tornadoes (龙卷风) form from a seeded storm cell in Kansas,” Dr. Doswell says. “Doe s cloud seeding create killer storms or reduce moisture downwind? No one really knows, of course, but the seeding goes on.”Given the degree of doubt, Mr. Stienwand suggests, “it would be wise to stop cloud seeding.” In practice, doubt has had the opposite effect. Due to the lack of scientific proof concerning their impacts, no one has succeeded in winning a lawsuit against cloud-seeding companies. Hence, private climate engineering can proceed in relative legal safety.语篇导读:本文是一篇说明文。

21. 【答案】C。
【解析】因mistake A for B (将A误以为B)是固定搭配。

make contributions to…(对……

2009高考英语阅读理解模拟训练(四)AYOU don’t need millions to be happy. In fact, at The Happiness Institute in Australia, a couple of hundred dollars may be enough. The institute opened its doors last year, and, since then, men and women of all ages have been paying A$200 an hour (US$140) for lessons on how to feel great.“You can actually increase your happiness levels. That’s what we teach,” said Timothy Sharp, founder of the institute.Experts say that only about 15 per cent of happiness comes from income, assets and other financial factors. As much as 85 per cent comes from things such as attitude, life control and relationships. Most of us are significantly better off financially than our parents and grandparents, but happiness levels haven’t changed to reflect that.Studies show that once the basic needs of shelter and food are met, additional wealth adds very little to happiness. Many decades ago, the “sage of Baltimore, Maryland”, editor HL Mencken, defined wealth as earning US$100 more than your “wife’s sister’s husband.”Behavioral economists now say part of the reason we are richer but not happier is because we compare ourselves to people better off materially.“The argument is that if you want to be happy there’s a very simple thing you can do: Compare yourself to people who are less well off than you —poorer, smaller house, car,” said Sharp. The Happiness Institute aims to show you how to overcome these unhappiness factors by focusing on “more than just your bank account.”“If I compare myself to Bill Gates then I’m always going to be down,” said Sharp.A better thing to compare with, he said, might be Kerry Packer, Australia’s richest person who has had a kidney transplant and heart surgery in recent years.1. Step 5CEvery day we go to school and listen to the teacher, and the teacher will ask us some questions. Sometimes, the classmates will ask for your opinions of the work of the class. When you are telling others in the class what you have found out about these topics, remember that they must be able to hear what you are saying. You are not taking part in a family conversation or having a chat with friends—you are in a slightly unnatural situation where a large group of people will remain silent, waiting to hear what you have to say. You must speak so that they can hear you—loudly enough and clearly enough but without trying to shout or appearing to force yourself.Remember, too, that it is the same if you are called to an interview whether it is with a professor of your school or a government official who might meet you. The person you are seeing will try to put you at your ease (not worried) but the situation is somewhat different from that of an ordinary conversation. You must take special care that you can be heard.8. When you speak to the class, you should speak ________.A. as slowly as possibleB. in a low voiceC. loudlyD. forcefully9. The main idea of this passage is _______.A. that we should talk in different ways in different situationsB. that we must speak loudlyC. that we must keep silent at any timeD. that we must talk with the classDThe first day of school our professor introduced himself and challenged us to get to know someone we didn’t know. I stood up to look around when a gentle hand touched my shoulder. I turned around to find a wrinkled, little old lady beaming up at me with a smile that lit up her entire being. She said, “Hi, girl! My name is Rose. I’m 87 years old. Can I give you a hug?”I laughed and enthusiastically(热情地)responded, “Of course you may!” and she gave me a giant squeeze.“Why are you in college at such a young, innocent age?” I asked. She jokingly replied, “I’m here to meet a rich husband, get married, have a couple of children, and then retire and travel!”“No seriously,”I said. I was curious what may have motivated her to be taking on this challenge at her age.“I always dreamed of having a college education and now I’m getting one!” she told me.Over the course of the year, Rose became a campus icon and she easily made friends wherever she went. She loved to dress up and she reveled in the attention bestowed upon her from the other students. She was living it up.At the end of the semester we invited Rose to speak at our football banquet. I’ll never forget what she taught us.“We do not stop playing because we are old; we grow old because we stop playing. There are only two secrets to staying young, being happy, and achieving success. You have to laugh andfind humor everyday. You’ve got to have a dream. When you lose your dreams, you die!” she said.“There is a huge difference between growing older and growing up. If you are nineteen years old and lie in bed for one full year and don’t do one productive thing, you will turn 20 years older. If I am 87 years old, and stay in bed for a year, and never do anything, I will turn 88. Anybody can grow older. But every minute counts for young men,” she added.“The idea is to grow up by always finding the opportunity in change. Have no regrets. The elderly usually don’t have regrets for what we did, but rather for things we did not do. The only people who fear death are those with regrets.”She concluded her speech by courageously singing “The Song of Rose”.
