由于玉山主峰东侧面临太平洋,为主迎风坡,水汽来源充足,在第四纪冰期雪线(3500m)以上,积雪成冰量较大,冰雪掘蚀、刨蚀成的冰斗规模大于玉山主峰西侧,其冰斗长度>宽度,冰川谷地延伸距离较长,可从八通关到达老浓溪谷地。
相反,玉山主峰西侧面临台湾海峡,水汽来源数量不如玉山主峰东侧,在末次冰期台湾岛甚至与大陆连为一体,不存在台湾海峡,所以玉山主峰西侧3500m以上地区的冰斗规模相对较小,其冰斗长度<宽度。
从玉山主峰西侧排云山庄一玉山主峰峰顶一带地形调研看,该区至少存在两期古冰川遗迹:规模较大的可能为倒数第二次冰期(200~130ka BP)或MIS3b冰进(54~44ka BP)末次冰期中冰阶,其冰川遗迹证据包括排云山庄向玉山主峰行进中所见的三道被切开的基岩冰坎地形及大型圈谷地形和圈谷中间的中磧览和两侧的侧磧览。
下山途中在排云山庄上方海拔3418m处发现的擦痕石表明第四纪冰川末端至少到达过海拔3418m的位置;此外,也表明由石英砂岩构成的冰川擦痕石位于古冰川侧磧览的位置,不易受后期谷地中部流速快的泥(土)石流改造和破坏,故而得以保存下来。
