Have you heard or read stories about people who are sick and have been healed by listening to music? Is it a miracle or a successful form of medicine? Can listening to music relieve pain?Around the world, music therapy(疗法) is being used to treat different medical conditions and illnesses. Some of the ways people use music therapy are to reduce pain, such as in childbirth or during cancer treatments,or to stimulate brain activity after an injury or money loss. Music therapy has also been successful in aiding children to overcome disabilities. Children can move their bodies with the music and stamp along to the beat. Why is music a useful therapy? Music is soothing and relaxing.but it also stimulates our brains. Emotionally and physically, we respond to the sounds of music. But the complexity of music(the different tempos, rhythms, melodies and harmonies) provokes(激发)the biggest response. Thus, classical music is most typically used for therapies due to complex sounds and patterns. Although rap or hip hop might be fun to listen to,it’s unlikely that such styles of music would produce the same kind of therapeutic effect Playing a musical instrument rather than simply listening to music can also be therapeutic for some people, helping relieve stress and anxiety Have scientists been able to prove that music can heal disease? Music has been shown to reduce pain in cancer patients by increasing the release endorphins(内啡肽). Endorphins are t he body’s natural painkillers, and when we listen to music, our brains respond by releasing these natural painkillers. It has also been known to contribute to the brain development of the babies who have just been born and even babies still in the mother’s w omb. Certain types of music have also been found tolower blood pressure and slow a person’s heart rate. Many people are hopeful that music could replace the need for some medications(药物)that are normally used to treat certain illnesses. At present, music therapy is used in a variety of settings such as hospitals, rehabilitation centers, nursing homes, day cares, and schools. Although music therapy is not yet considered a mainstream treatment,it is recognized more and more as a useful addition to traditional treatment. So next time you are feeling low or stressed out,put on some relaxing music and let the music heal you.1 Heals2 uses/application3 work4 Conclusion5 stimulate6 disabilities7 favorite/preference8 relieving9 newborn 10 addition一、单句语法填空1.Most of the students are willing ________ (condemn) his deed in the class as lack of manners.2.You should realize that your________ (remarkable)may hurt the feelings of peoplearound you.3.People who harm others to benefit themselves are really ________ (disgust).4.I would have no ________ (hesitate)in declining the position.5.It was at a wedding that I first made the ________ (acquaint)of him. 6.Yesterday her old mother________ me for her daughter. That means I was ________ for her daughter. In fact she often makes the same________.(mistake)7.Tom is often________.Last year he went to Shanghai to try his ________.________ he met and married his girlfriend there.(fortune)8.The children ____________ (classify) into different groups according to how much they know.9.You should look up the right ________ (pronounce)of this word in the dictionary. 答案1.to condemn2.remarks3.disgusting 4.hesitation5.acquaintance6.mistook;mistaken;mistake7.fortunate;fortune;Fortunately8.were classified 9.pronunciation二、完形填空Preparing for TomorrowSixthgrade schoolteacher Ms.Shelton believed in readiness.Students remembered how she walked in on the first day of class and began writing words of eighthgrade on the__1__.They quickly protested that the words were not on their__2__and they couldn't learn them.Their teacher insisted that the students could and would learn these__3__.She said that she would teach them something that should be given.Ms.Shelton__4__by saying that one of the students in the classroom could go on to__5__,maybe evenbe president someday, and she wanted to prepare them for that day.Ms.Shelton spoke those words many years ago.__6__did she know that someday one of her students—Jesse Jackson—would take them__7__.She believed that if they were well prepared, they could__8__high goals.Ralph Waldo Emerson once said,“People only see what they are__9__to see.”If that's true, then it is also__10__that they only become what they are prepared to become. And many things in life is just about getting ready.“I want to be d oing something more__11__with my life than what I am doing now,”a young man once said to me.He__12__what he was doing was just not that important.Other people have said things to me such as,“I only__13__I had a meaningful relationship.I'd really like to get a better job,but I just don't see__14__.”You fill in the blanks. What is it you would like to__15__that isn't happening?Perhaps the answer is that you are not yet__16__.Maybe you need more time to prepare before you are truly ready for that which you__17__.Think of today as another chance to__18__yourself for that exciting future you are looking for.Today is not wasted. If you desire more from__19__,then you can use today as training. For you will experience only what you are prepared to__20__.Something wonderful can happen. And you can use today to get ready for tomorrow.1.A.desk B.wallC.chalkboard D.door解析结合前面的“Sixthgrade schoolteacher Ms.Shelton”和“began writing words”可知老师在教室里,应该是在黑板(chalkboard)上写字。
