Through our lives, we can gain a lot and lose so much. But being honest should always be with us, as honesty is always regarded as a virtue. Every time I talk about the topic, something crowds in my mind as if it had just happened.

I was 16 when one morning, Dad told me I could drive him to Mijas and then take the car in a nearby garage to get it serviced. At that time, I had just passed the driving test, and I hardly had a chance to use the car, so I said yes without hesitation.

I drove my father to Mijas, promising to pick him up again at 4 pm, then I went to a

nearby garage, and put the car in there. Since I had several hours to spare, I decided to go to a movie theater near the garage to see the movie. However, I was so absorbed in the plot of the movie that I forgot the time. When the last movie finished, I looked at my watch:6 pm. I was two hours late!

I thought my father would be very angry if he knew what I was doing. And he would never let me drive again. So I decided to make up an excuse. Then, I drove to the appointed place, my father was sitting in a corner, waiting patiently. I first apologized for being late, then told him that I wanted to get there as soon as possible, but that something was wrong with some of the main parts of the car.

I would never forget the way he looked at me. “I'm very disappointed that you thought you had to lie to me, Jason.” My father looked at me again and said, “When you didn't show up on time, I called the gas station and asked if there was anything wrong They told me you never picked up the car. So, you see, I know there's nothing wrong with the car at all."

Paragraph 1

A wave of guilt swept over me and I had to admit the fact that I had gone to the movies and that was the real reason why I was late.

Every Dog Has Its Day

Roscoe was a big, ugly bulldog. He wasn’t very smart, but he had a good heart. Roscoe’s owner left him chained up outside each day when h e went to work. Roscoe liked being outside. He was always nice to everyone. He didn’t even bother the rat that lived in a nearby hole.

A group of boys often passed Roscoe on their way to and from school. One day, one of the boys had a candy bar in his hand as he walked by. Roscoe jumped up when he smelled that candy bar. He tried to run over to the boy, but his chain stopped him short. The boys all laughed when they saw Roscoe pulling on his chain. The boy with the candy bar held it in front of Roscoe’s nos e. He kept it just out of reach to tease him. All the boys laughed as Roscoe tried to reach the candy bar but couldn’t.

From then on, those boys never passed Roscoe without doing something mean to him. Poor Roscoe was having a hard time and felt scared. The rat that lived in the alley had been watching. She understood that people were sometimes mean to animals for no good reason. She didn’t think it was nice. She decided to help Roscoe.

When Roscoe went to sleep for his afternoon nap, she quietly sneaked over to him. She began chewing on Roscoe’s leather collar around his neck which the chain was connected to. She had chewed through more than half of it when she heard out voices down the alley.

The rat raced back into her hole and saw that the boys were coming. Roscoe was awake now. When the boys saw him, they laughed and started throwing sticks at him. Roscoe was hit and he barked angrily at the boys with all his strength. This time when he got to the end of his chain, his collar broke off. He was free.

Recently I graduated from high school, and as a gift I received a huge hunch of flowers, 40 to be exact! I had so many that I didn't know what to do with them. The next weekend my niece and nephew, Sue and Mike, aged 6 and 7, came and suddenly I had an idea. I might let them give out these flowers to people they met on the street, and in this way they could learn how to be friendly to others. So I told them about my plan and explained that these flowers would make people feel happy and smile. They loved the idea and were eager to have a try. So at once we took every single flower and tied a smile card to it. We then went to the street with the flowers.

The first flower went to a policeman. As soon as she saw the policeman, my niece ran up to him and handed him a flower. His smile was so big, but hers was even bigger!

In no time, we neared the end of our flowers. It was lunch time and we went to Subway for lunch. There the kids gave a flower to the waitress, who was really excited to receive the flower. As we were eating our lunch, the waitress came up to the kids with two big chocolate cookies! She said the chocolate cookies were for them and that she really liked the flower! As they ate the cookies, my niece and nephew looked at me with the biggest smiles I had ever seen. 注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;

Emily White was born seventeen years ago with so many birth problems in her body. Some of her organs, bones and muscles were out of shape. No one expected her to survive. She did make it but with her strange body figure, everyone could recognize her, even from a distance.

In Emily White's hometown, there was a yearly outdoor performance in the school auditorium(礼堂). It had been performed for so many years and actually had become one of the most important events of the Christmas season for many of the town's people. Many people tried out each year for it but so many were turned away. It could only include the most excellent people in the field.

Emily had a beautiful singing voice. Last year she went to Mrs. Owens — her music teacher to ask to join in the performance. Without letting her sing, Mrs. Owens took a look at Amy's body and said, "Child, you just don't fit. Everyone would stare at you and that would make you uncomfortable. It would make them uncomfortable, too."

Without singing a single note, Emily was sent back through the door of the choral(合唱)room. Hurt and upset, she decided never to try out again. But Mrs. Owens then retired.

This year, there came a new music teacher, Butler. He heard about Emily and suggested that she have a try.

Emily didn't want to be rejected again, so she hesitated a little about it. As Emily struggled, the door was pushed open and Mr. Butler called, "Emily, you're next." Although kind of nervous. Emily did as Mr. Butler told her to do. Mr. Butler sat by the piano to accompany Emily. When Emily finished her testing performance, she thanked Mr. Butler and knew the result would be posted on the door of the choral room the next day.

Emily couldn't sleep that night. She was suffering from the feelings that she didn't fit and the great need to be accepted. By the next morning, her stomach was even in pain because of stress.

Para1:

The next day, Emily nervously glanced at the list on the door of the choral room.

Growing up, I understood one thing about my dad: He knew everything. This was our relationship: I asked him questions and he told me the answers.

In my teen years, he taught me things I’d need to know to survive in the real world. When I moved out on my own, I called him usually when something broke into my apartment and I needed to know how to fix the toilet, the air-conditioner or the wall.

But then, eventually, I needed him less. For everything, I had Google. I don’t know when it happened, but when I called our conversations developed into six words. Me: “Hi, Dad”. Him: “Hi, sweets. Here’s Mom.” I lov ed my dad, of course, but I wondered at times if maybe he had already shared everything I needed to know.

Then, this past summer, I moved in with my parents for three weeks while my house was being repaired. They own a lake house, and Dad asked me to help him rebuild the bulkhead(隔板)at their dock(船坞).

“How do you know how to build a bulkhead?”

“I spent a summer in college building them on the Jersey shore.”

“You did?” I thought I knew everything about my dad. I knew about the summer at the manufacturing pl ant that burned his hands raw, and even the tiny little kitchen, where he learned how to make the best pancake. But I never knew this.

“Yes. Now come up here and let me teach you how to use this circulars saw (圆锯).” All of a sudden, I realized that maybe i t’s not that there’s nothing left to say. Maybe it’s just that I’ve spent my life asking him the wrong questions.

We ended up our talking but I was lost in

There are a number of volunteer organizations out there that deal in things like clothing donation and the sale of used books. Retired schoolteacher Cathy has been a member of such an organization, VNSA, since 2012. Her duties involve working throughout the year to help prepare the books for their February sale and acting as personnel manager for the sale. That means she helps coordinate (协调) all the other volunteers who help out before, during, and after the event.

It was before the 2019 book sale and Cathy once again found herself sitting among a towering pile of books and sorting through them to ensure that they would be in good enough condition to resell. As she was sorting, she came upon a book, wrinkled and broken. Though she didn’t like doing it, the only remaining choice for her was to throw it away.

A greedy book lover herself, Cathy felt guilty about throwing away any book. Before she threw it away, she decided to check for more serious damage inside that might justify her giving it up. She opened the cover and went through the pages when she noticed something unusual.

Going through the pages, Cathy was surprised to see that a part had been hollowed out (挖空)inside the book. Obviously, something was hidden in that rather expertly hollowed space. She looked down and saw that the book’s previous owner had hidden four packages in the space, ea ch containing ten $100 bills. Cathy’s first thought was that the bills were toy money that perhaps a kid had hidden inside as part of some childish game or something.

There Are No Vans

To me, what Thanksgiving really means is giving good thanks, not eating turkey. By the time I was 18 I had created my Thanksgiving ritual (惯例). I would go out shopping and buy enough food for one or two families. Then I would dress like a delivery boy, go to the poorest neighborhood and just knock on a door, and would always include a note saying “All that I ask in return is that you t ake good enough care of yourself so that someday you can do the same thing for someone else.” I have received more from this annual ritual than I have from any amount of money I’ve ever earned, especially one such experience in New York City.

Several years ago I was in New York City with my newly married wife during Thanksgiving. She was sad because we were not with our family. Normally she would be home decorating the house for Christmas, but we were stuck here in a hotel room. I said, “Honey, look, why don’t we decorate some lives today instead of some trees?” When I told her what I always do on Thanksgiving, she got excited. I said, “Let’s go someplace where we can really appreciate who we are, what we are able to do and what we can really give. Let’s go to the poor neighborhood Harlem and feed some people there in need. We’ll go buy enough food for six or seven families for 30 days. We’ve got enough. Let’s go do it!”

We started by getting a van (货车), but there seemed no vans in all of New York

City. The rent-a-car places were all out of vans. My wife was disappointed, and I said, “Look, the bottom line is that if we want something, we can make it happen! All we have to do is take action. There are plenty of vans here in New York City. Look down at the stre et. Do you see all those vans? Let’s go get one!” My wife agreed and we took action.

Para1:

We tried stopping vans as they were driving down the street.

Sally had trouble speaking in social situations. I’m a registered nurse and I love kids and dogs. I wanted to use Bella to bring her joy, comfort and confidence the way only a dog can.

That morning in January, her teacher led us to a room by the school office. “Sally hasn’t spoken outside her home in the last two years,” she told me. “Her parents have taken her to doctors, but nothing has worked.” A little girl stood shyly just inside the doorway. Her eyes brightened when noticing my dog.

“This is Isabella Rose. I call her Bella,” I said. “Would you like to pet her? She doesn’t know anyone here and she’d like to meet you. She does tricks. Would you like to see?”

Sally nodded. I motioned with my hand. Bella lay down and then rolled over. Sally’s eyes cheered up. “She’ll do it for you too,” I said. “I can teach you.”

I showed Sally the hand signals for various commands. She was a natural with Bella. Soon Sally was able to take Bella at her pace all on her own. I could see her standing taller, more sure of herself each time we met.

One morning, when she was working with Bella, I heard a tiny voice, barely a whisper: “Good dog.” Sally didn’t take her eyes off Bella, but I wanted to jump for joy. Sally spoke a little more each week, only to Bella at first, but then to me. Later, she started giving voice commands with her hand signals and her confidence rose. St ill, she hadn’t spoken in her classroom.

“Could you bring Bella to my class and show the other kids her tricks?” Sally asked me one day. An idea struck me. “Why don’t you do it?” I said. “I know you can. You’re as good with Bella as I am.” Now, Sally stoo d nervously in front of her kindergarten class, with Bella sitting calmly by her side. Her classmates focused on Sally, waiting for her to speak.

My husband Fred and I moved to a new place. We bought a small house in a reasonably good neighborhood close to Fred’s office. It was a one-and-a-half-floor brick house built for soldiers returning from World War II. That house impressed nobody except me. We had to decorate it first because it was so old. Fred and I started to paint the walls and the doors. I also worked outside the house, helping Fred break the ugly fence between us and the neighbors and grow some flowers.

After I finished painting walls in the bedroom upstairs, I brought up some water and old towels to wash the window. I washed the inside, then opened the window and stepped out on the kitchen roof to wash the outside. The window was the kind that you couldn’t open from the outside.

I was so devoted to my housework that I didn’t realize the window gradually closed. After finishing cleaning, I stood back to admire the clean glass. And then, I tried to open the window, but I failed. Standing on my kitchen roof, I looked around the neighborhood. That was a lovely afternoon. Where were the neighbor kids riding their bikes? They often rode back from the park. No young voices shouted to one another. The neighbor on the left was at work. Carroll and Julie, an elderly couple, lived in the house at the corner and were our nextdoor neighbors. They were likely to be at home, but our kitchen was on the wrong side of our house for me to call them.

I s at down and thought about my situation. Even if someone came along, he couldn’t walk in the house and open the window. The doors were locked. That was my husband’s doing. “When you’re working on an indoor project, anyone could just open the door and come i n. So, just keep the doors closed,” he would say. I just needed a rope to get down. I sat there, thinking how stupid I was and wishing a rope would magically appear.

The next day, Emily nervously glanced at the list on the door of the choral room, She was not rejected this time. Her name was posted at the top of the list. She, Emily White, was chosen to be the leading singer! She would sing alone in the performance. Emily couldn't believe her eyes. There must be some mistake. But Mr Buttler said to her with determined eyes, "Emily, I choose you because you should perform the part — your voice is unusual. Believe in yourself." Greatly encouraged, Emily practiced really hard.

Paragraph 2

Finally, the day of performance came. Standing in front of the line, Emily felt her throat tight and her palms sweating. When the curtain opened up, the eyes of the whole audience fell upon Emily. "Emily White!" Someone whispered. Then, along with the first note of music, Emily began to sing her heart out. Her voice was like a nightingale ringing in the auditorium. Applause! Emily felt so happy and comfortable. She was shining on the stage. Emily White, with so many birth problems in her body, was an angel.

“Emily White!”

Whoever had owned the book had chosen to hide $ 4,000 inside the book. Cathy’s second thought upon seeing the money was that this was sufficient to do charity. She didn’t bother considering keeping the money herself. It just didn’t feel right to keep it for an y reason. Regardless of how much good she thought she might be able to do with the money, Catchy decided that the only realistic choice left to her was to return it to its owner.

Luckily for Cathy, the book also contained the name of the book owner. Using this name, Cathy might be able to find its rightful owner. Still, it would take a little digging. Thankfully, the book’s previous owner happened to have a pretty unusual last name. This made Cathy’s Internet search much easier. After only about ten minutes online, Cathy found them. The money belonged to a man. So thankful was he for Cathy’s honesty that he actually ended up donating a generous amount to VNSA to show his gratitude.

【点睛】续写部分描写详略得当,且使用了大量高级词汇和高级句子,如sufficient, bother doing sth. for any reason;regardless of;realistic;以及Whoever had owned the book had chosen to hide $ 4,000 inside the book. Cathy’s second thought upon seeing the money was that this was suff icient to do charity.

(7)Para1:

We tried stopping vans as they were driving down the street. I learned something about New York drivers that day: They don’t stop; they speed up. Then we tried waiting by the light. We’d go over, knock on the window and the driver would roll it down, looking at us in alarm, and I’d ask if he would drive us to Harlem so we could help some people. Every time the driver would look away quickly, furiously roll up the window and pull away without saying anyth ing. My wife was ready to give up, but I said, “It’s the law of averages: somebody is going to say yes.”

Para 2:

Eventually a van drove up and the driver said yes. We were wild with joy and climbed onto the van. Upon arrival, he led us to a store where we bought lots of food and some baskets. Together we packed them up, carried them onto the van and went to buildings where there were even people living without electricity. It was a truly fulfilling experience to make even a small difference. You see, you can make anything happen if you commit to it and take action. Miracles like this happen every day—even in a city where “there are no vans.”

如:speed up,furiously, roll up the window,be ready to,pack up, make even a small difference等高级词汇;We’d go over, knock on the window and the driver would roll it down, looking at us in alarm, and I’d ask if he would drive us to Harlem so we coul d help some people. Together we packed them up, carried them onto the van and went to buildings where there were even people living without electricity.

(8)Paragraph 1:

But not a word came out. Sally had been so excited about putting on a dog show for her class. She had been quite familiar with the hand signals and had practiced for weeks. Now her eyes found mine. I nodded encouragingly. She took a deep breath and opened her mouth. Her mouth — then her whole body — seemed to close in on itself in defeat. Sally stood off to the side, head down. I felt awful. Sally returned to her seat, not looking at anyone, not even Bella.

Paragraph 2:

The next week, she told me she wanted to try again, looking up at me with determination. “Are you sure?” I

as ked. “You don’t want to wait till next year?” “No,” she said. “Today, I can do it.” Then we headed to Sally’s classroom. The kids were sitting in a circle on the floor listening to the teacher. We walked to the front of the room. I shook Sally’s hands and stepped back. For a few seconds, she stood silently, staring at her classmates. Finally she whispered, “This is Isabella Rose.” Then, a little louder with more confidence, “Isabella Rose.”

如:be familiar with, stood off, head down等高级词汇;非谓语动词的运用Sally returned to her seat, not looking at anyone, not even Bella. (9)Suddenly, I heard a little boy laughing. I stood up and looked down the street. Sure enough, there was a little boy. He was riding his bike. I told him that was washing the window and it shut. He looked up, saw me, and laughed. After all, it’s not an everyday case that you see an old lady on a roof. I told him to ask my next-door neighbors to come and help me. “Of course,” he simply answered.

The boy looked at me for while and left to ask for help. Soon Carroll and Julie came, bringing a long rope with them. And then I climbed down. I sincerely thanked them for their kind help. The doors were locked and the keys were in the house, so my lovely neighbors invited me to their house to celebrate my rescue with coffee, cookies, and laughter. A few hours later, my husband came back. I said thanks to them again and went home. From then on, I definitely believe that a far-off relative is not as helpful as a near neighbor.

所给首句中的“The boy looked at me for a while and left to ask for help.”

如:look up;after all;from then on等短语;高级句型:宾语从句 From then on, I definitely believe that a far-off relative is not as helpful as a near neighbor. Soon Carroll and Julie came, bringing a long rope with them.
