Death of a Salesman and the Disillusionment of American Dream田倩(宁夏大学外国语学院,宁夏银川750000)1IntroductionDeath of a salesman ,Miller's most famous work ,addresses the painful conflicts within one family ,but it also tackles larger issues re-garding American national values. The play examines the cost of blind faith in the American Dream. In this respect ,it offers a postwar Ameri-can reading of personal tragedy in the tradition of Sophocles'Oedipus Cycle .Miller charges America with selling a false myth constructed around a capitalist materialism nurtured by the postwar economy ,a mate-rialism that obscured the personal truth and moral vision of original American Dream described by the country's founders. The propagation of myths of a peaceful ,homogenous ,and largely ignored economic and social stratification .Many Americans could not subscribe to the degree of social conformity and the ideological orthodoxy that a prosperous ,booming ,con-servative suburban mid-class championed. The basis for the dramatic conflict in Death of a salesman lies in Arthur Miller's conflict relationship with his uncle ,M anny Newman;also a salesman .Newman imagined a continuous competition between his son and Miller.Newman refused to accept failure and demanded the appear-ance of utmost confidence in his household .In his youth ,M iller had written a short story about an unsuccessful salesman .His relationship with Manny revived his interest in the abandoned manuscript. He trans-formed the story into one of the most successful dramas in history of the American stage. In expressing the emotions that M anny Newman inspired through the fictional character of Willy Lowman ,Miller manages to touch deep chords within the national psyche. What is so called American Dream?American Dream is a belief that as long as the United States after a hard struggle will be able to achieve the ideal of a better life ,that is ,people have to work through their own hard work ,courage ,creativity and determination to move to-wards prosperity ,rather than rely on specific social classes and other as-sistance.This is usually on behalf of the people in the economic suc-cess or entrepreneurial spirit. Many European immigrants hold it of ideal of the United States.Despite some criticism of the American dream of excessive emphasis on material wealth and happiness in the measure of victory on the role ,many Americans really believe that the success of such an opportunity in the world is not found in other countries do notexist.By the time of the Industrial Revolution ,the United States huge natural resources and advanced industrial technology are making rapid social mobility may change ,and this trend is still increasing day by day The American Dream can be described as a belief in the freedom that allows all citizens and residents of the United States of America to achieve their goals in life through hard work.Today ,in America it gen-erally refers to the idea that one's prosperity depends upon one's own abilities and hard work ,not on a rigid class structure ,though the mean-ing of the phrase has changed over America's history. For some ,it is the opportunity to achieve more prosperity than they could in their countries of origin;for others ,it is the opportunity for their children to grow up with an education and career opportunities;for others ,it is the opportu-nity to be an individual without the constraints imposed by class ,caste ,race ,or ethnicity. The definition of the American Dream is now under constant discussion and debate. Also :The package of beliefs ,assumptions ,and action patterns that social scientists have labeled the American Dream has always been a fragile agglomeration of individual freedom of choice in life styles ,equal access to economic abundance ,and the pursuit of shared objectives mutually advantageous to the individual and society. While the term American Dream today is often associated with im-migrants ,native-born Americans can also be described as "pursuing the American Dream,""living the American Dream"or "living the Dream."2The Modern Tragedy in Death of a Salesman2.1The Tragedy about a Man's DeathWilly is a victim of the American Dream. He is just as a lot of Americans that no matter how ordinary he is ,as long as they try their best ,they will succeed ,make a fortune ,and become a great person.God will help you ,and you will own the house and car.Your children will have a bright future. On the contrary that ,God will go away from you. This belief has become an integral part of American culture.Willy was born humble and he got success through his personality. He considered that if the person wants to be succeed ,he must be respected by others ,loved by others. His false belief leads to the tragic result of his life. His suffering ,like in the audience with the traditional tragedy ,produced the same complex emotions ,including anger ,joy ,indignation ,compassion ,Abstract :The play is centered on one man trying to reach the American dream and taking his family along for the ride. The Loman's lives from beginning to end are a troubling story based on trying to become successful ,or at least happy.Throughout their lives they encounter many problems and the result is a tragic death caused by stupidity and the need to success. This play takes issue with those in America who place too much stress upon material gain ,at the expense of other ,more admirable human values. In this play ,there is also a more general criticism of Amer -ican values. In addition ,this undue concern over material success breaks down the bonds between men that form the basis for a smooth-function -ing society. The play addresses the painful conflicts within one family ,but it also tackles larger issues regarding American national values ,also ex -amines the cost of blind faith in American Dream. The process of the character's defeat was actually the course disillusionment of their American Dreams ,aiming to reveal the American people's dilemma of existence and the root causes of the tragedy.Key words :salesman;values;american dream;tragedy;disillusionment民营科技2011年第6期pity and fear, which is Aristotle's"clean"theory. The traditional tragic figures, like Willy is an individual. He has a tradition of tragic figure similar to the"tragic weakness."His tragic mistake is that he readily accepted the values advocated by capitalism, and to use it as a key to open the door to success. With this"tragic weakness,"Willy tried to make every effort to dream a reality, but the deadly nature of the "weakness"but we can only let him collapse. The"sacrifice"is the tragedy of an eternal theme of tradition, but also is one of the themes in Death of a Salesman.Willy,in order to pursue the successful dream and maintain personal dignity,he sacrificed his family and his life. However, because he loved his family very much, finally he hoped that he could scarify himself to improve his family condition.2.2The Tragedy of American DreamIf the play thus contains a new type of tragic statement,it is also curiously lyrical in tone. While this is not poetic drama in the old sense, the preoccupation with the past often gives it a nostalgic,or ele-giac,quality.All the Lomans look back a little sadly to happier days of untroubled comradeship when Willy capably directed his sons in carpen-try projects for the home.Willy can remember, too, when the business world had in it an element if respect and gratitude. And he can look further back to wagon trips through the developing West. There once was a time, too, when the little house was not jammed in among tall a-partment buildings and when Biff waved to Willy from the football field,a young Hercules with the sun all around him.Death of a Salesman is thus not only a drama of social criticism and a modern tragedy but also a mood piece, wistfully looking back.As for the strictly tragic element, apart from the previously noted social criticism in the Ibsen tradition, this is first,a play about a man's death. And tragedy has from the beginning dealt with this awesome ex-perience,regarding it as significant and moving.Yet most early tragedies included a great reversal of fortunes,in which a great or powerful person fell to his ruin from a high position of wealth and authority. Here,at the stat of the play,Willy is already broke and was never an influential or famous individual.Even the loyal Linda admits that he has never been a great man or even the finest of characters.Nevertheless, she maintains that he is worthy of some attention as a human being who suffer. After all,"a small man can be just as exhausted as a great man."Willy, for all this ordinariness, has rather lofty aspirations for himself and his son. His goals may not be altogether admirable. But,then, were those if Mac-beth and such tyrant heroes of earlier tragedies?Yet Willy pursues them with passionate intensity. He wants his flawed concept of success with a terrible earnestness and even dies in quest of his dream.Viewed in one way,Willy is a pathetic, incompetent old drummer with absurd ler sees him, however,as aiming high and agonizing deeply. Hence, the"fall"of even such a poor,debt-rid-den man can have gen-uine tragic aspects.3ConclusionThe play takes issue with those in America who place too much stress upon material gain,at the expense of other, more admirable human values. There are,for instance, several angry comments on the company's callous disregard for the welfare of Willy, who has served it steadily for over thirty years.Linda speaks with angry of his being taken off salary, and both boys think this outrange.Biff later talks of his father as having "landed in the ash can"and suggests that this is all that a"hard-work-ing drummer"can expect. But the most scathing indictment is actually delivered by means of the portrayal of Howard in the office scene. Howard is so engrossed in his new toy,the mechanical gadget, the tape recorder, that he cannot pay much attention to the human being,Willy. His brusqueness, his impatience, and then his coldly unconcerned notice of dismissal-all support Willy's own contention that business world has lost all respect, comradeship, and gratitude, and is now merely"cut and dried."Yet there is also a more general criticism of American values.Willy loves his sons and wants what is the best for them.Yet his one insis-tent message to them is that they must rise rapidly in the business world, outshine all others, and be satisfied only with a fortune like Uncle Ben's.And this combination of an unfeasible objective and limited tal-ents leads to unfortunate sequences.Rather than be forced to endure the stigma of failure, all three constantly lie about their achievements. But the bragging never wholly downs their feelings of inadequacy.Their sec-ond escape route is to dream up dazzling get-rich-quick schemes and coast for a while on the glorious prospects.Yet sooner or later, such bubbles inevitably burst. In addition, this undue concern over material success breaks down the bonds between men that form the basis for a smooth functioning so-ciety.And as a playwright,Arthur Miller develops as a major theme in many of his works the need for a greater sense of mutual responsibility. When, however, the one desirable goal is to get ahead of everyone else, then the spirit of helpfulness decline. The United States is largely an industrial nation, and its economic system is based on the free enterprise and considerable competition. Some of those who are proud of the American way of life object to the type of critical approach take in such a play Death of a Salesman.Their feeling is that,in showing a"little man"like Willy so callously dis-charged after long years of service;the whole system is being attacked. In opposition to this viewpoint several arguments have been advanced.Notes[1]Chris Baldick,Oxford Concise Dictionary of Literary Terms[M].Shan-ghai:Shanghai Foreign Language Education Press,2000:218-219. AMany facts suggest that children are overweight and the situation is getting worse, according to the doctors. I feel there are a number of reasons for this. Some people blame the fact that we are surrounded (包围) by shops selling unhealthy, fatty foods, such as fried chicken and ice cream, at low prices. This has turned out a whole generation of grown-ups who seldom cook a meal for themselves. If there were fewer of these restaurants, then probably children would buy lesstake-away food. There is another argument that blames parents for allowing their children to become overweight. I agree with this, because good eating habits begin early in life, long before children start to visit fast food shops. If children are given fried chicken and chocolate rather than healthy food, or are always allowed to choose what they eat, they will go for sweet and salty foods every time, and this will carry on throughout their lives. There is a third reason for this situation. Children these days take very little exercise. They do not walk to school. When they get home, they sit in front of the television or their computers and play computer games. Not only is this an unhealthy pastime(消遣), it also gives them time to eat more unhealthy food. What they need is to go outside and play active games or sports. The above are the main reasons for this problem, and therefore we have to encourage young people to be more active, as well as steering them away from fast food shops and bad eating habits.56. According to the text, what kind of children may eat more unhealthy food?A. Those who often take exercise.B. Those who often watch television.C. Those who often have meals at home.D. When people have enough money, these wants become demands. Now, it' s important for the managers in a company to understand what their customers want if they are going to develop effective marketing strategies (策略). There are various ways of doing this. One way at supermarkets, for example, is to interview customers while they're doing their shopping. They can be asked what they prefer to buy and then the results of the research can be studied. This provides information on which to base future marketing strategies. It' s also quite normal for top managers from department stores to spend a day or two each month visiting stores and mixing freely with the public, as if they were ordinary customers, to get an idea of how customers act.Another way to get information from customers is to give them something. For example, some fast food restaurants give away tickets in magazines or on the street that permit customers to get part of their meal for nothing. As well as being a good way of attracting customers into the restaurants to spend their money, it also allows the managers to get a feel for where to attract customers and which age-groups to attract.Another strategy used at some well-known parks such as Disneyland is for top managers to spend at least one day in their work, touring the park dressed as Mickey Mouse or something like that. This provides them with a perfect chance to examine the scene and watch the customers without being noticed.64. The text is designed for _______.A. mangersB. salesmenC. researchersD. customers65. Which of the following can help managers get useful information?A. Visiting customers themselves.B. Giving customers free food on the street.C. Visiting parks as ordinary customers.D. Asking customers questions at supermarkets.66. What does the word "this" underlined in the last sentence refer to?A. Visiting Disneyland.B. Wearing attractive clothes.C. Acting Mickey Mouse.D. Dressing up and walking around.67. The main idea of the text is _________.A. how to do market researchB. how to develop marketing strategiesC. how to find out customers' social needsD. how to encourage customers to spend more moneyDThe summer I was ten, my mother decided to bring us to the world of art. My brother and I were not very excited when we realized what my mother meant. What she meant was not that we could take drawing classes or painting classes but that we would have to spend one afternoon a week with her at the Fine Arts Museum. Before each visit to the museum, she made us read about artists and painting styles(风格). It was almost as bad as being in school. Who wants to spend the summer thinking about artists when you could be with your friends at the swimming pool?First we had to read about ancient Egyptians(古埃及人) and their strange way of painting faces and then go to look at them at the museum. My 12-year-old brother thought this was so funny, but I was not interested. Later we had to learn about artists in the Middle Ages who painted people wearing strange long clothing. We had to lookat pictures of fat babies with wings and curly (鬈曲的) hair and with no clothes on flying around the edges of paintings. I certainly couldn't see what was so great about art.On our last visit to the museum, something happened when I saw a painting by a woman called Mary. In it, a woman was reading to a child. The colors were soft and gentle, and you could tell by the mother' s expression how happy she was just to be with the child. I couldn't stop looking at this painting ! I wanted to see every painting Mary had ever made! It was really worth looking at so many paintings to find a painter who could interest me so much.68. The aim of the mother's plan was to _________.A. take them to visit the museumB. introduce them to the world of artC. ask them to read about artistsD. show them different painting styles69. What was the writer's experience in the museum before the last visit?A. She came to feel her mother's love.B. She liked many paintings.C. She hardly enjoyed herself.D. She could understand the pictures of fat babies.70. What made the writer go through a change that summer?A. One of Mary's paintings.B. A strange way of painting.C. Artists in the Middle Ages.D. Her mother's instruction.71. From the text, we can see _________.A. the importance of curiosityB. the effect of artC. the value of learningD. the power of family educationEMeeting people from another culture can be difficult. From the beginning, people may send the wrong signal (信号). Or they may pay no attention to signals from another person who is trying to develop a relationship.Different cultures emphasize (强调) the importance of relationship building to a greater or lesser degree. For example, business in some countries is not possible until there is a relationship of trust. Even with people at work, it is necessary to spend a lot of time in "small talk", usually over a glass of tea, before they do any job. In many European countries -- like the UK or France -- people find it easier to build up a lasting working relationship at restaurants or cafes rather than at the office.Talk and silence may also be different in some cultures. I once made a speech in Thailand. I had expected my speech to be a success and start a lively discussion; instead there was an uncomfortable silence. The people present just stared at me and smiled. After getting to know their ways better, I realized that they thought I was talking too much. In my own culture, we express meaning mainly through words, but people there sometimes feel too many words are unnecessary.Even within Northern Europe, cultural differences can cause serious problems. I feel there are a number of reasons for this. Some people blame the fact that we are. surrounded (包围) by shops selling unhealthy, fatty foods, such as fried chicken and ice cream, at low prices. This has turned out a whole generation of grown-ups who seldom cook a meal for themselves. If there were fewer of these restaurants, then probably children would buy less take-away food. There is another argument that blames parents for allowing their children to become overweight, I agree with this, because good eating habits begin early in life, long before children start to visit fast food shops. If children are given fried chicken and chocolate rather than healthy food, or are always allowed to choose what they eat, they will go for sweet and salty foods every time, and this will carry on throughout their lives. There is a third reason for this situation. Children these days take very little exercise. They do not walk to school. When they get home, they sit iii front of the television or their computers and play computer games. Now, it’s important for the managers in a company to understand what their customers want if they are going to develop effective marketing strategies (策略). There are various ways of doing this. One way at supermarkets(超市), for example, is to interview (采访) customers while they’re doing their shopping. They can be asked what they prefer to buy and then the results of the research can be studied. This provides information on which to base future marketing strategies. It’s also quite normal for top managers from department stores to spend a day or two each month visiting stores and mixing freely with the public, as if they were ordinary customers, to get an idea of how customers act.Another way to get information from customers is to give them something. For example, some fast food restaurants give away tickets in magazines or on the street that permit customers to get pan of their meal for nothing. The text is designed for____________.A. managersB. salesmenC. researchersD. customers65. Which of the following can help managers get useful information?A. Visiting customers themselves.B. Giving customers free food on the street.C. Visiting parks as ordinary customers.D. Asking customers questions at supermarkets.66. What does the word “this” underlined in the last sentence refer to?A. Visiting Disneyland.B. Wearing attractive clothes.C. Acting Mickey Mouse.D. Dressing up and walking around.67. The main idea of the text is____________.A. how to do market researchB. how to develop marketing strategiesC. how to find out customers’ social needsD. how to encourage customers to spend more money4、(8分)The summer I was ten, my mother decided to bring us to the world of art. Who wants to spend the summer thinking about artists when you could be with your friends at the swimming pool?First we had to read about ancient Egyptians (古埃及人) and their strange way of painting faces and then go to look at them at the museum. My 12-year-old brother thought this was so funny, but I was not interested. Later we had to learn, about artists in the Middle Ages who painted people wearing strange long clothing. We had to look at pictures of fat babies with wings and curly(鬈曲的) hair and with no clothes on flying around the edges of paintings. I certainly couldn’t see what was so great about art.On our last visit to the museum, something happened when I saw a painting by a woman called Mary. In it, a woman was reading to a child. The colors were soft and gentle, and you could tell by the mother’s expression how happy she was just to be with the child. I couldn’t stop looking at this painting! I wanted to see every painting Mary had ever made! It was really worth looking at so many paintings to find a painter who could interest me so much.68. The aim of the mother’s plan was to___________.A. take them to visit the museumB. introduce them to the world of artC. ask them to read about artistsD. show them different painting styles69. What was the writer’s experience in the museum before the last visit?A. She came to feel her mother’s love.B. She liked many paintings.C. She hardly enjoyed herself.D. She could understand the pictures of fat babies.70. What made the writer go through a change that summer?A. One of Mary’s paintings.B. A strange way of painting.C. Artists in the Middle Ages.D. Her mother’s instruction.71. From the text, we can see ___________.A. the importance of curiosityB. the effect of artC. the value of learningD. the power of family education5、(8分)Meeting people from another culture can be difficult. From the beginning, people may send the wrong signal (信号). Or they may pay no attention to signals from another person who is trying to develop a relationship.Different cultures emphasize (强调)the importance of relationship building to a greater or lesser degree. For example, business in some countries is not possible until there is a relationship of trust. Even with people at work, it is necessary to spend a lot of time in “small talk”, usually over a glass of tea, before they do any job. In many European countries—like the UK or France— people find it easier to build up a lasting working relationship at restaurants or cafes rather than at the office.Talk and silence may also be different in some cultures. I once made a speech in Thailand.I had expected my speech to be a success and start a lively discussion instead there was an uncomfortable silence. The people present just stared at me and smiled. After getting to know their ways better, I realized that they thought I was talking too much. In my own culture, we express meaning mainly through words, but people them sometimes feel too many words are unnecessary.Even within Northern Europe, cultural differences can cause serious problems. Certainly, English and German cultures share similar values; however, Germans prefer to get down to business more quickly. We think that they are rude. In fact, this is just because one culture starts discussions and makes decisions mom quickly.People from different parts of the world have different values, and sometimes these values are quite against each other.
