Everyone was yelling and bartering in Chinese. The smells were a mix of amazing and revolting. It smelled like delicious grilled meats and spices, but also trash and things I can't mention! We stopped for a kebab lunch which was weird but tasty.That evening we took a bus to a place called the Stone Forest. It's a whole area full of these crazy rock formattions that legit look like a forest made of stone! They were formed over millions of years by wind and rain eroding the rocks into pillars and arches and caves. Mom and Dad gave Timmy and I these paper guides that showed different rock formations that looked like animals or objects. We had a blast climbing through thepathways and trying to spot the different "wildlife"! We also saw performers there acting out stories on a stage formed by the rocks. I had no clue what they were saying, but the costumes and dances were really colorful.By this point we'd been in China for a few days and were starting to get the hang of things. It was honestly still very stressful at times with the language barrier and trying to get around. But we did our best with phrasebooks, translation apps, pointing and hand gestures!The next stop was taking an overnight train to a city called Dali. That train ride was an adventure in itself! The bunks were so tiny and you had to be quiet because there were tons of people trying to sleep. I've never slept on a moving train before - it was rocky but not too bad. The coolest part was staring out the window at the Chinese countryside zipping by - rice fields, small villages, bamboo forests and more of those wild rock formations.Dali was beautiful! It's this little historic town surrounded by huge, misty mountains. We wandered the ancient streets lined with traditional architecture and cobblestones. We went on a hike one day up into the mountains to some super old Buddhist temples set into the cliffs. The views overlooking Dali were absolutely breathtaking. And there were wild monkeyseverywhere trying to steal people's snacks! We had to keep a tight grip on our food.My favorite experience in Dali was the last night we were there. We took a boat cruise around the lake at night which was so peaceful and romantic (not in a mushy way, just nice).
