The human brain contains 10 thousand million cells and each of these may have a thousand connections. Suchenormous numbers used to discourage us and cause us to dismiss the possibility of making a machine with human -like ability, but now that we have grown used to moving forward at such a pace we can be less sure. Quite soon, in only 10 or 20 years perhaps, we will be able to assemble a machine as complex as the human brain, and if we can we will. It may then take us a long time to render it intelligent by loading in the right software (软件)or by altering the architecture but that too will happen.I think it certain that in decades, not centuries, machines of silicon (硅)will arise first to rival and then exceed their human ancestors. Once they exceed us they will be capable of their own design. In a real sense they will be able to reproduce themselves. Silicon will have ended carbon’s long control. And we will no longer be able to claim ourselves to be thefinest intelligence in the known universe. As the intelligence of robots increases to match that of humans and as their cost declines through economies of scale we may use them to expand our frontiers, first on earth through their ability to withstand environments, harmful to ourselves. Thus, deserts may bloom and the ocean beds be mined. Further ahead, by a combination of the great wealth this new age will bring and the technology it will provide, the construction of a vast, man-created world in space, home to thousands or millions of people, will be within our power.Choose correct answers to the question:1、In what way can we make a machine intelligent?A. By making it work in such environments as deserts, oceans or space.B. By working hard for 10 or 20 years.C. By either properly programming it or changing its structure.D. By reproducing it.2、What does the writer think about machines withhuman-like ability?A. He believes they will be useful to human beings.B. He believes that they will control us in the future.C. He is not quite sure in what way they may influence us.D. He doesn’t consider the construction of such machines possible.3、The word “carbon” (Line 4, Para.2) stands for _________.A. intelligent robotsB. a chemical elementC. an organic substanceD. human beings4、A robot can be used to expand our frontiers when _______.A. its intelligence and cost are beyond questionB. it is able to bear the rough environmentC. it is made as complex as the human brainD. its architecture is different from that of the present ones5、It can be inferred from the passage that _______.A. after the installation of a great number of cells and connections, robots will be capable of self-reproductionB. with the rapid development of technology, people have come to realize the possibility of making a machine with human-like abilityC. once we make a machine as complex as the human brain, it will posses intelligenceD. robots will have control of the vast, man-made world in space。
Of all the components of a good night's sleep, dreams seem to be least within our control. In dreams, a window opens into a world where logic is suspended and dead people speak. A century ago, Freud formulated his revolutionary theory that dreams were the disguised shadows of our unconscious desires and fears; by thelate 1970s, neurologists had switched to thinking of them as just "mental noise"-the random byproducts of the neural repair work that goes on during sleep. Now researchers suspect that dreams are part of the mind's emotional thermostat, regulating moods while the brain is "off line." And one leading authority says that these intensely powerful mental events can be not only harnessed but actually brought under conscious control, to help us sleep and feel better. "It's your dream," says Rosalind Cartwright, chair of psychologyat Chicago's Medical Center, "if you don't like it, change it."he link between dreams and emotions shows up among the patients in Cartwright's clinic. Most people seem to have more bad dreams early in the night, progressing toward happier ones before awakening, suggesting that they are working through negative feelings generated during the day. Because our conscious mind is occupied with daily life we don't always think about the emotional significance of the day's events-until, it appears, we begin todream. And this process need not be left to the unconscious. Cartwright believes one can exercise conscious control over recurring bad dreams. As soon as you awaken, identify what is upsetting about the dream. Visualizehow you would like it to end instead; the next time it occurs, try to wake up just enough to control its course. With much practice people can learn to, literally, do it in their sleep. At the end of the day, there's probably little reason to pay attention to our dreams at all unless they keep us from sleeping or "we wake up in panic," Cartwright says. Terrorism, economic uncertainties and general feelings of insecurity have increased people's anxiety. Those suffering from persistent nightmares should seek help from a therapist. For the rest of us, the brain has its ways of working through bad feelings.Sleep-or rather dream-on it and you'll feel better in the morning. Choose correct answers to the question:1.By saying that “dreams are part of the mind's emotional thermostat," (Lines 4-5, Para. 1) the researchers mean that _______.A.we can think logically in the dreams tooB.dreams can be brought under conscious controlC.dreams represent our unconscious desires and fearsD.dreams can help us keep our mood comparatively stable2.What did Cartwright find in her clinicA.Most bad dreams were followed by happier ones.B.Divorced couples usually have more bad dreams.C.One’s dreaming process is related to his emotion.D.People having negative feelings dream more often.3.Cartwright believed with much practice,we can learn to _____.A.control what dreams to dreamB.sleep well without any dreamsC.wake up in time to stop the bad dreamsD.identify what is upsetting about the dreams4.The author points out that a person who has constant bad dreams should ______A.learn to control his dreamsB.consult a doctorC.sleep and dream on itD.get rid of anxiety first5.The author most probably thinks that controlling dreams is ______.A.a good practiceB.a new discoveryC.helpful for everyoneD.not essential for everyone1.[D] 词义理解题。

1.As a person who writes about food and drink for a living, I couldn’t tell you the first thing about Bill Perry or whether the beers he sells are that great. But I can tell you that I like this guy. That’s because he plans to ban tipping in favor of paying his servers an actual living wage. I hate tipping. I hate it because it’s an obligation disguised as an option. I hate it for the post-dinner math it requires of me. But mostly, I hate tipping because I believe I would be in a better place if pay decisions regarding employees were simply left up to their employers, as is the custom in virtually every other industry. Most of you probably think that you hate tipping, too. Research suggests otherwise. You actually love tipping! You like to feel that you have a voice in how much money your server makes. No matter how the math works out, you persistently view restaurants with voluntary tipping systems as being a better value, which makes it extremely difficult for restaurants and bars to do away with the tipping system. One argument that you tend to hear a lot from the pro-tipping crowd seems logical enough: the service is better when waiters depend on tips, presumably because they see a benefit to successfully veiling their contempt for you. Well, if this were true, we would all be slipping a few 100-dollar bills to our doctors on the way out their doors, too. But as it turns out, waiters see only a tiny bump in tips when they do an exceptional job compared to a passable one. Waiters, keen observers of humanity that they are, are catching on to this: in one poll, a full 30% said they didn’t believe the job they did had any impact on the tips they received. So come on, folks: get on board with ditching the outdated tip system. Pay a little more upfront for your beer or burger. Support Bill Perry’s pub, and any other bar or restaurant that doesn’t ask you to do drunken math.1.What can we learn about Bill Perry from the passage?A.He runs a pub that serves excellent beer.B.He intends to get rid of the tipping practice.C.He gives his staff a considerable sum for tips.D.He lives comfortably without getting any tips.正确答案:B解析:作者在文章第一段第三句表示支持比尔·佩里主张摒弃小费的制度,原文中ban tipping和B)中get rid of the tipping practice意思相同,故B)为答案。
I remember the first time I saw a robot dancing. It was at a technology expo, and I was completely blown away byhow fluid and graceful the robot’s movements were. It made me realize that dancing is not just for humans, but for robots too.The robot was programmed to perform a variety of dance styles, from hip-hop to ballet. Its movements were so precise and coordinated, and it seemed to have a sense of rhythm and musicality. I couldn’t help but be impressed by its performance. One of the most fascinating things about the robot’s dancing was its ability to interact with the audience. It would mimic the movements of people who were dancing nearby, and even engage in a dance battle with them. It was incredible to see how the robot could adapt to differentstyles and keep up with the human dancers.I also noticed that the robot’s dancing improved over time. As it learned new dance moves and techniques, its performance became even more impressive. It was like watching a dancer grow and evolve right before my eyes.Overall, watching the robot dance was a truly memorable experience. It made me realize that technology and art can come together in the most unexpected ways, and that robots are capable of so much more than we often give them credit for.

Each statement contains information given in one of the paragraphs. Identify the paragraph from which the information is derived. You may choose a paragraph more than once. Each paragraph is marked with a letter. Answer the questions by marking the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 2.Robot Management A. Robots have been the stuff of science fiction for so long that it is surprisingly hard to see them as the stuff of management fact. A Czech playwright, Karel Capek, gave them their name in 1920 (from the Slavonic word for "work" ). An American writer, Isaac Asimov, confronted them with their most memorable dilemmas.Hollywood turned them into superheroes and supervillains. When some film critics drew up lists of Hollywood's 50 greatest good guys and 50 greatest baddies, the only character to appear on both lists was a robot, the Terminator.B. It is time for management thinkers to catch up with science-fiction writers. Robots have been doing auxiliary jobs on production lines since the 1960s. The world already has more than lm industrial robots. There is now an acceleration in the rates at which they are becoming both cleverer and cheaper: an explosive combination.Robots are learning to interact with the world around them.Their ability to see things is getting ever closer to that of humans, as is their capacity to ingest information and act on it. Tomorrow's robots will increasingly take on delicate, complex tasks. And instead of being imprisoned in cages to stop them colliding with people, they will be free to wander.C. America's armed forces have blazed a trail here. They now have no fewer than 12,000 robots serving in their ranks. Peter Singer, of the Brookings Institution, a think-tank (智囊团), says mankind's 5,000-year monopoly on the fighting of war is breaking down. Recent additions to the battlefield include tiny "insects" that perform reconnaissance (侦查) missions and giant "dogs" to terrify enemies. The Pentagon is also working on the EATR, a robot that fuels itself by eating whatever biomass (生物量) it finds around it.D. But the civilian world cannot be far behind. Who better to clean sewers or suck up nuclear waste than these remarkable machines? The Japanese have made surprisingly little use of robots to clear up after the recent earthquake, given their world leadership in this area. They say that they had the wrong sort of robots in the wrong places. But they have issued a global call for robotic assistance and are likely to put more robots to work shortly.E. As robots advance into the service industries they are starting to look less like machines and more like living creatures. The Paro (made by AIST, a Japanese research agency) is shaped like a baby seal and responds to attention. Honda's robot, ASIMO, is humanoid and can walk, talk and respond to commands.F.Until now executives have largely ignored robots, regarding them as an engineering rather than a management problem. This cannot go on: robots are becoming too powerful and ubiquitous(无处不在的). Companies may need to rethink their strategies as they gain access to these new sorts of workers. Do they really need to outsource production to China, for example, when they have clever machines that work ceaselessly without pay? They certainly need to rethink their human-resources policies--starting by questioning whether they should have departments devoted to purely human resources.G.The first issue is how to manage the robots themselves. Asimov laid down the basic rule in 1942: no robot should harm a human. This rule has been reinforced by recent technological improvements: robots are now much more sensitive to their surroundings and can be instructed to avoid hitting people. But the Pentagon's plans make all this a bit more complicated: many of its robots will be, in essence, killing machines.H. A second question is how to manage the homo side of homo-robo relations. Workers have always worried that new technologies will take away their livelihoods, ever since the original Luddites' fears about mechanised looms. That worry takes on a particularly intense form when the machines come with a human face: Capek's play that gave robots their name depicted a world in which they initially brought lots of benefits but eventually led to mass unemployment and discontent. Now, the arrival of increasingly humanoid automatons in workplaces, in an era of high unemployment, is bound to provoke a reaction.I.So, companies will need to work hard to persuade workers that robots are productivity-enhancers, not just job- eating aliens. They need to show employees that the robot sitting alongside them can be more of a helpmate than a threat. Audi has been particularly successful in introducing industrial robots because the carmaker asked workers to identify areas where robots couldimprove performance and then gave those workers jobs overseeing the robots. Employers also need to explain that robots can help preserve manufacturing jobs in the rich world: one reason why Germany has lost fewer such jobs than Britain is that it has five times as many robots for every 10,000 workers.J.These two principles--don't let robots hurt or frighten people--are relatively simple. Robot scientists are tackling more complicated problems as robots become more sophisticated. They are keen to avoid hierarchies (层级) among rescue-robots (because the loss of the leader would render the rest redundant). So they are using game theory to make sure the robots can communicate with each other in egalitarian (平等) ways. They are keen to avoid duplication between robots and their human handlers. So they are producing more complicated mathematical formulae in order that robots can constantly adjust themselves to human intentions. This suggests that the world could be on the verge of a great management revolution: making robots behave like humans rather than the 20th century's preferred option, making humans behave like robots.46. Tomorrow's robots will be free to move around rather than being locked up in cages so as not to hurt people.47. It is not easy for people to regard robots as management stuff, for the later are mostly seen in science fictions.48. Robots appear more like living creatures as they enter into the service industry.49. According to the Pentagon's plans, many of its robots will essentially become killing machines.50. The Japanese didn't use a lot of robots to clear up after the recent earthquake, considering their world leadership in therobot field.51. Companies should show their workers that robots can be more of a helper rather than a threat to them.52. The fact that more and more human-like robots are used in workplaces will surely arouse reaction in a time of high unemployment.53. Robots, who are considered as an engineering instead ofa management problem, have been largely neglected by executives.54. Scientists are trying to enable robots to constantly adjust themselves to people's intenlions.55. The example that Germany has lost fewer manufacturing jobs than Britain shows that robots can help preserve manufacturing jobs in the rich world.【参考译文】管理机器人 A.[47]很久以来。
Robots have long been a staple of science fiction, and the idea of a robot that can dance is particularly appealing. After all, dancing is a complex and expressive activity that requires a high degree of coordination and balance. Developing a robot that can dance convincingly would be a major breakthrough in robotics. There are a number of challenges that need to be overcome in order to create a dancing robot. First, the robot needs to be able to sense its own body and its surroundings. This is necessary for the robot to be able to coordinate its movements and avoid collisions. Second, the robot needs to be able to learn how to dance. This is a complex task that requires the robot to be able to recognize patterns and adapt its movements accordingly. Third, the robot needs to be able to express itself through dance. This requires the robot to be able to conveyemotions and ideas through its movements.Despite the challenges, there has been significant progress in the development of dancing robots. In 2017, a team of researchers at the University of California, Berkeley developed a robot called Atlas that can dance to music. Atlas is a humanoid robot that is able to perform a variety of complex movements, including jumping, running, and dancing. The development of dancing robots is still in its early stages, but there is great potential for this technology. Dancing robots could be used for entertainment, education, and even therapy. They could also help us to better understand human movement and dance.

I remember the first time I saw a robot dancing, I was amazed by its smooth and graceful moves. It was like watching a professional dancer performing on stage. The way it moved its arms, legs, and body in perfect sync with the music was truly mesmerizing.I have to admit, I was a bit envious of the robot's dancing skills. I mean, I can dance, but not like that! The robot seemed to effortlessly glide across the dance floor, while I often find myself stumbling over my own two feet. But then I realized that the robot's dancing was not just about its mechanical precision. It was also about the joy and passion it brought to the dance. As it swayed and twirled to the music, I could see the sheer delight in its movements. It was as if the robot was truly enjoying every moment of the dance.I decided that I wanted to learn from the robot's dancing. I practiced and practiced, trying to capture that same sense of joy and passion in my own movements. And you know what? I think I've actually improved! I may not be as smooth and graceful as the robot, but I've definitely added a bit more flair to my dancing. Now, when I hit the dance floor, I try to channel the robot's energy and enthusiasm. I let the music guide me and I lose myself in the rhythm. And you know what? It works! I've had people come up to me and compliment me on my dancing, saying that I look like I'm having the time of my life out there. So, I guess you could say that the robot taught me more than just how to dance. It showed me that dancing is not just about technique, but also about expressing yourself and having fun. And for that, I am truly grateful.
The dancers stand motionless at their position and the room grows silent. But as the music starts, they began to move, bending, turning and waving their fans gracefully as they perform. a traditional Japanese dance. Yoshihiro Kuroki watches in silence, occasionally making notes. But as the dance ends, he beams with happiness. The performance has been flawless.
There have been many performances of traditional Japanese dances over the centuries, but this one is unique, because it is performed not by human dancers but by robots. And the performance takes place not in a dance studio but in a laboratory of Sony Corp.’s Entertainment Robot Co. in Shinagawa, Japan, where Kuroki isgeneral manager. He is the mastermind behind a series of even more capable humanoid entertainment robots, starting with the Sony Dream Robot, or SDR, in 1997, up to the current QRIO in 2003.
These delightful machines are only 58 cm tall, about the size of a newborn infant, weigh about 7 kg, and move with 38 degrees of freedom, each with its own servomotor(辅助马达).
QRIO’s predecessor, the SDR4X, announced in 2002, can walk, dance, sing, speak, recognize faces, and understand continuous speech. Each robot has two charge-coupled-device cameras to detect color and position andcan locate a colored ball, move toward it, and
kick it into a goal. It also has contact sensors in severaljoints to avoid pinching real human fingers. Seeing the robot perform, it is difficult to remember that there is no sentience(知觉)behind those glass eyes.

He is the
mastermind behind a series of... robots...。
该句中twocameras to...
