就在准备回家时,他的父亲顺便提议去看看Chig的奶奶。
“我们都是一家人,我们最好去拜访她还有我的兄弟。
”所以我们没有朝北向家的方向走,而是向更远的南走,来到了奶奶的家里。
现在Chig有了疑惑:去参加重聚会只是一个借口向南方行驶,他的父亲路上一定一直都想着奶奶的家。
他的父亲很少和Chig谈论他的父母和兄弟,除了他的兄弟GL,听起来挺像骗子,爱搞恶作剧,还有点像Don Juan;父亲口中的GL有些放纵, 却也可爱,在他五岁的时候,他的行为没有礼貌而且还很危险。
Chig的父亲在他十五岁的时候就离开了家。
当问他为什么的时候,他会说:“我想上学。
但是在家这边没有黑人学校,所以我去Knoxville和我的表兄弟一起住,在那里我可以上学。
”我们在阿姨Rose家门口见面了,她是GL的妻子,我们被招待到客厅。
一个坐着的老妇人在望着窗户。
Rose阿姨在拜访者中站着。
老妇人看着Chig的父亲。
“Rose,这是谁?Rose?”她眯着眼看着。

”她转向Chig。
“那么那个人,他长得像Eleanor, Charles的妻子,但是Charles永远也不会带他的儿子来看我。
我甚至从没听说过任何消息来自Charles。
”她又停止了说话。
“这是Charles,妈妈。

”Rose阿姨站在我们中间说道,让他们更亲近些。
“Charles从New York远道而来看你,还有小Charles一起来了。
”老妇人盯着他们。

这时Chig看到了父亲的脸,满是痛苦的怪相。
她抱住Charles;Chig看到她紧紧揽住他父亲脖子上的胳膊上的肌肉。
她从她的椅子上探出半边身子。
“你进来可好?我的儿子?”Chig没有听清他父亲的回答。
她放开了Charles,重新回到了她的椅子上,双手环抱着胳膊。
她的手就像是木头那样黑,甚至就像是木头的一部分。

”“好吧,那Hiram在哪?你赶紧给这些孩子打电话,叫他们过来-就是现在!你们这些人吃够了?让我去看看。
”她准备起来了。
Chig伸出他的手。
她拨开他的手。
“他们是怎么说我的?Chig?他们说我瘫痪了?别相信这些鬼话。
他们对老女人一无所知。
当我需要帮助时,我会告诉你的。
我唯一需要帮助的时候就是当我死了他们要把我抬向地底下。
”她现在站了起来,她的背和肩都很直。
她身高只到Chig的胸部。
她眯起眼睛看着他。
“你吃很多吧?你的父亲有两个男人的饭量。
”“是的,奶奶。
”“那很好。
这说明你不紧张。
你的妈妈,她也不紧张。
我记得在Chicago,她在窗户旁边一句话也不说坐了整整一下午,一直在做针织。
”她笑着。
“让我看看我们准备吃些什么。
”“我会准备的,妈妈。
”Rose阿姨温柔的说道。
“你有一段时间没见到Charles了。
你们就坐下来多聊聊天吧。
”老妇人斜着眼看着Rose阿姨。
“你做饭是因为这是你该做的,这并不代表是因为我不会做饭。
”Rose阿姨轻声笑起来。
“我知道你会做饭的,妈妈。
”“那好吧,我就坐着聊聊天吧。
”她又坐了下来,重新整理她短小腿上的裙子。
Chig一直在说,在奶奶问出问题之前他告诉奶奶他所有的事情。
而他的爸爸只有在问他使他才回答,而且每次回答只是一个简单的字,就像是他一回到家又变成了小孩一样,安安静静地坐在客厅看着母亲和客人谈话。
等Hiram叔叔和他的妻子Mae回来了,他们做下来一起吃饭。
Chig还没问为什么GL叔叔没来,Rose阿姨主动解释了:“永远也不知道这个男的在哪里。
有一个周四早晨他离开了家里,之后他就从Chicago打来电话,说他去看Joe Louis打拳去了。
不过他还是会回来;他不再像他年轻时那么无用了。
”Chig的父亲提起来开车想起GL比他大五岁,应该快五十岁了。
Hiram叔叔比Chig的父亲看起来要瘦小点;他古怪的短发一半是灰色一半是黑色。
他前额上有一块很白的斑点。
后来Chig才知道在他二十岁的时候就是这样了。
Mae(Chig难以接受叫她阿姨)比Hiram年轻许多,很漂亮,所以Chig多看了她几眼。
她的肤色是蜜黄色,有着很长的睫毛。
她穿着一件白色的外衣。
晚饭的时候,Chig和他的爸爸坐在一边,对着Hiram叔叔和Mae;他的奶奶和Rose阿姨坐在桌尾。
饭菜很可口,有很多菜Chig也吃了很多。
晚饭的时候,他们谈论家庭,过了三十个年头的家庭琐事,特别是GL,Mae的孩子和Chig问的问题;老妇人来回答他们;Rose阿姨负责提示奶奶讲那些最好玩的事情;Chig的父亲一直在笑,Hiram叔叔一直在吃。
“你为什么不给他们讲讲关于马的事情呢,妈妈?”Rose阿姨说道,不顾Chig微不足道反抗,向他盘子里挖了几勺土豆泥。

”“就是那个,妈妈。
”Rose阿姨一边点着头,一边切下Chig盘子里的另一片白肉。
Mae咯咯地笑了起来。
“哦,我听说过这件事。
特别有趣,Chig。
”老妇人放下了她的叉子开始讲了:有一次,GL带着一把破旧的椅子离开家,我想让他把它带去教堂参加义卖,在路上他遇见了一个男人带着来自西部的马。
现在,我估计你会想每个村子里都会有一个骗子,但是你无法想到会是两个,而且上帝禁止他们见面-但是他们遇见了,GL带着他的椅子,这个男人带着他的马。
其实,我真希望我能看到这一幕;那一定是激昂澎湃的对话。
那个带着马的男人说他的马一半是阿拉伯血统,一半是印度血统,GL也告诉他他的椅子是个古董,是他从非常有钱的白人那里偷过来的。
所以他们就达成买卖。
之后,我透过窗户看到GL拽着一匹马回到家来。
那匹马很温顺,它的眼睛几乎是闭着的,它的蹄子看起来很笨拙。
“GL,你从哪弄来的那东西?”我说。
“我用那个旧椅子换回来,妈妈。
”他说道。
“我们还讨价还价了呢。
这匹马比爸爸的那匹还要好。
”然后,我看着那匹马,发现GL看起来一分钟比一分钟机警,我向你保证我一直看着他知道他变得像热水壶那样烫人,那匹马在从鼻子里向外呼气。
“拜托,妈妈。
”GL说。
“同意吧,我会带你去兜风的。
”这时George,我的丈夫,上帝让他疲倦的灵魂得到暂且休息,那天他带回家修一辆白人的马车,轱辘已经坏了,但是被修好了,GL就说:“求你了妈妈,我们可以坐在这辆不错的马车上去兜风的。
”“GL,”我说,“不可以的。
如果我们坐他们白人的马车会送命的。
你不是才把它带回来的吗。
”就像我说的,我确定这孩子带来的动物一定是笨拙的。
“妈妈,我不能把它送回去。
”GL说。
“为什么不能呢?”我问。
“因为我都不知道那个男人现在在哪。
”GL回答。
“好吧。
”我说。
“那我估计我们遇到麻烦了。
”然后回到屋里,快到晚饭时间了,我还要准备十个人的饭。
“妈妈。
”GL在我身后叫我。
“妈妈,你不打算和我一起出去兜风吗?”“去吧,孩子。
你不会是想让我骑着那个畜生吧。
”我看着这个畜生,它一直在热得哈气,我猜那个男的麻醉了它。
“那个畜生很野,GL,”我说着。
“他不是,他不是。
那个男的说它是马车只是鞍坏了,而且它有和苹果一样的清香。
”我的长女,Essie走到走廊上对我说:“去吧妈妈,我来做饭,你都几个星期没出门了。
”“对啊,来吧妈妈。
”GL说。
“没有必要为这些事烦恼。
这匹马是很温顺的,就像是玫瑰花瓣。
”可是就在刚才这匹马由于喷鼻息太过用力,在它的蹄子周围发生了一阵小风暴。
“是的,妈妈。
”Essie说,“你能看出来的,它很温顺。
”之后,我看了看Essie又看看那匹马,我不确定我们看的是同一个动物。
我应该发现Essie的眼光从来没有这么好过。
“走吧,妈妈。
”GL说道。
“好吧。
”我说。
我站在走廊里看GL把那匹马拉到白人的马车前。
那一会,这个动物特别安静,动了一下蹄子。
我现在觉得和GL一起驾着这匹马兜风很不错。
我能看出来我能陪着GL一起他有多么的高兴。
他围着这匹马捆好皮带扣紧皮带扣,这个过程中他一直在笑这让我感觉很欣慰。
