One day he was making some boxes for the clothes his church was sending to an orphanage (孤儿院) in Egypt. On his way home, he reached into his shirt pocket to find his glasses, but they were gone. He drove back to the church, but his search turned out to be fruitless.Suddenly, he realized what happened. The glasses had slipped out of his pocket and fallen into one of the boxes, which he had nailed shut. His new glasses were heading for Africa!Grandpa had six children and he had paid twenty dollars for the glasses that morning. “It's not fair,” he told God as he drove home. “I've been very faithful (忠诚的) in giving my time and money to YOUR work.”Several months later, the director of the orphanage was on holiday in the United States. He wanted to visit all the churches that helped him in Egypt, so he came to speak on Sunday night at my grandfather's small church in Chicago.“But most of all,” he said, “I must thank you for the glasses you sent last year. You see, I had just broken my glasses. Then your boxes arrived. To my surprise, I found a pair of glasses in it and it fit me very well!”The people listened, happy for the amazing glasses, but thought that the man must have confused their church with another. It read, “Once, while I was riding on a crowded bus, the man sitting next to me threw his cell phone out of the window when his phone rang. I was surprised. He looked at me, shrugged (耸耸肩) and looked away. I had no idea whether it was his or stolen or whether he even knew what a cell phone was or not, but he clearly wanted to be free of it, because it clearly troubled hi m. ”Billions of people across the world use cell phones. Though cell phones are a wonderful way for communication, they often do the exact opposite. Using cell phones can increase stress within families and friends. So when I recently returned home, I got rid of my cell phone. Now I go outside without taking my phone with me. I’ve noticed things in my neighborhood I never noticed before, such as gardens. I’ve met new people, started conversations with neighbors I didn’t speak to before and talked with some of my friends face to face instead of chatting over the phone.Instead of keeping me off from the world, stopping using my cell phone has helped me get even closer to my family and friends.5.According to the story, the man on the bus threw away his cell phone because ______.A.it didn’t work properlyB.it was stolen from someone elseC. he didn’t like the phone’s styleD. he didn’t want to be bothered by it6.We can learn from the passage that cell phones _____.A. are too expensive for many peopleB. can also get people into troubleC. stop people from communicating face to faceD. can make life more interesting7.What can we learn about the author?A. In the books of J.R.R. Tolkein, Bilbo Baggins finds a ring that can make him disapp ear. Of course, there’s also poor Harry Potter, who used his invisibility cloak (隐形斗篷) to hide from danger. Now that you’ve got some ideas, it’s time for the hard part: building the cloak. To do that, you have to give up science fiction and turn to real science. An invisibility cloak has to cheat anything or anyone who might be watching. In order to understand how something can be seen, it’s important to understand how we see.Human beings can only see objects that reflect (反射) light waves. These waves enter the eye and are then processed by the brain. However, if an object doesn’t reflect light, then the wavesdon’t enter the eye, and the brain doesn’t process. So building an invisibility cloak is building something that doesn’t reflect light.Cummer was part of a team of scientists from Duke University, including David Smith and David Schurig, who built the world’s first version (版本) of an invisibility cloak. They had been inspired by the work of a British physicist, John Pendry. He in May said that an invisibility cloak was possible and Pendry was not the only one thinking about a disappearing act. At the same time, a Scottish physicist, UIf Leonhardt published a paper on building invisibility equipment.“It wasn’t easy,” says Cummer. “As often happens in science and research, it didn’t work very well the first time. That first cloak didn’t work like Harry Potter’s --- the scientists didn’t actually see anything disappear. So the research is still under way. ”9.The first two paragraphs serve as a (n) ________.A. introductionB. explanationC. commentD. summary10.Cummer and other scientists got the idea of building an invisibility cloak from _________.A. the film Harry PotterB. the work of a British physicistC. a paper published by a Scottish physicistD. the book of J.R.R. Tolkein11.From the text we learn that the research on an invisibility cloak __________.A. was led by PendryB. was very successfulC. was used in most popular moviesD.is still in progress12.What can be the best title for the text?A. The Science of DisappearingB. The Hardest Part of Building a CloakC. The Invention of an Invisibility CloakD. Turn Science Fiction into Real ScienceCAt heart, parents always wish the best for their children, and they work hard for that. Nowadays, we see parents deciding the schools for their little ones before the baby is even born. Once kids start going to school, some parents want to have a time-to-time update of their kid'sactivities. They want to come to the classroom every day, keep an eye on whom they talk to, know the friends they keep, start telling them how to do their job, and keep talking or giving a feedback (反馈) to them about everything under the sun. Besides, they send their kids for extra hobby classes, as they want their children to do best in every field. When it comes to the education, super mom and dad have all the plans made for their children, and I am sure that they have come up with the best. So, try to fight for the dreams that your parents have seen for you. However, in some cases, it may happen that the kids have some different dreams. Parents sometimes don't even consider the choice of their kids and may force them to do what they wanted to do in life. It's good to plan the future for the children, but leave at least some decisions to them.So what should the children do? First, hear out all the plans that your parents have made for you. If you have some different ideas, then sit down and talk to your family about it. Be patient and respect their decisions, but put your plan forth, and make them understand what you want to do and why. Many times, you are not aware about the difficulties that you may have to face while pursuing your dreams. Ask your parents for suggestions, which will make them feel good and involved. That way, they may support you if you are going on the right path.13.The parents described in Paragraph 1 tend to __________.A. have a good understanding of their childrenB. worry a lot about their childrenC. take good care of their childrenD. expect too much from their children14.With respect to educational plans, the author advises ___________.A. children to do as they are toldB. children to turn a deaf ear to their parentsC. parents to respect their children’s choicesD. parents to do everything for their children15.The underlined word “pursuing” in Paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to “__________”.A. going afterB. planning forC. adapting toD. preparing for16.What is the author’s attitude towards these super parents’ behaviors?A. ObjectiveB. DoubtfulC. UncaringD. SupportiveDBarkCover Price: $19.80 Price: $15.00($2.50 / issue (期) )You save: $4.80 (24%) Review: By Pat KaneI absolutely love Bark magazine!

What type of writing is this text?A. An news reportB. A travel guideC. An announcementD. A research paperBYour manager comes to you in a panic and asks you to take the place of Sharon, who will be out of town all next week. Your first thought is, “Why me?” Although you are not so happy, you smile and say, “No problem.” Your boss is making t he request, after all, so refusal is not a choice. Right? Not necessarily. In some cases, “Sorry, I can’t” may be the most proper response. Here are two examples of situations in which it might make sense to say no and suggestions for how to turn down the boss.“It seems that Joe can’t make the deadline again. Can you handle it?”The solution(解决方法): If your boss does need your help, taking on the extra work is the right thing to do and can earn you valuable bonus points. However, if these situations arise regularly, to the point where they begin to interfere (干扰) with your regular work, you may need to start pushing back. Next time your boss approaches you seeking emergency help, you might say, “Of course I’ll help. But, as you know, I’ve had to cover for others a lot lately, and it’s affecting my own work. Once we get through this project, can we talk about how to better get used to these types of requests in the future?”“Sorry, but you have to work late again tonight. OK? ”The solution:Most employees understand that there are times when they must stay late to finish their work. But when these requests become frequent, you should speak up. Putting in extra hours every day can quickly lead to breakdown. Therefore, you might say to your manager, “We’re all working a lot of extra time lately. And these hours are becoming difficult for me to maintain(维持). Will we need to keep this pace much longer? If so, could we talk about ways that might help me achieve a better work/life balance during this period?”It’s never easy to say no to your boss. But in some situations it’s necessary. Even the best managers can fail to recognize when they’re asking too much of their employees. Yes, sometimes you must give in when asked to do something you don’t like. But that doesn’t mean you must agree to unreasonable requests without question.24. Which of the following is the best title?A. How to Say No to Your BossB. How to Deal With the Mean BossC. Now, with a new generation of computer models, they're trying to make clear what those changes will be: Less snow? More wildfires? Fewer animals? The new computer models allow scientists to divide the state into much smaller regions than ever before --- just thirty-six square miles. These regional models give scientists a way of draping (覆盖) climate over California's complex landscape.Scientists want to understand how warming will affect the state's people, its economy, and the thousands of species that only live in California. The State's Climate Action Team has organized a meeting last month in Los Angeles on the economic effects of these targets.California started the only state-run climate research program three years ago and is spending about $5 million a year on it. The goal of the research is to limit the impact of such changes.California is part of an internationally recognized "hot spot" of biodiversity (生物多样性) that e xtends north across the Oregon border and south into Baja California. It's home to 4,426 species of plants, nearly half of which are found nowhere else. What happens in California could have great influence. During one particularly serious fight, the neighbor’s son Andy Livasywas hit by his stepfather. Watching police cars moving around the street, Marianne realized that she had to help Andy before he “became an angry person who turned to drugs and alcohol”.A few days later, she invited Andy to live with her family. Andy accepted. No one understood why Marianne would take in a troubled teen like Andy. Then Andy scowled (怒视) at the world from beneath his long and untidy hair and picked fights with Nick and Jake. At the local high school, he often slept through classes. But Marianne saw herself in Andy. She, too, had grown up in an unsettled family, “with a lot of shouting and not a lot of love.”It wasn’t easy. For Andy, moving in with the Naslunds was like entering a foreign country. “I was used to getting screamed at if I ever messed up, so I was kind of waiting for that,”says Andy. But the day he was suspended (停学) from high school for fighting, the screaming never happened. Instead, Marianne calmly asked why he did it, listened to Andy’s explanation, and didn’t a llow him to use the computer and watch TV for one week.“Marianne did it so that instead of fearing a punishment, I didn’t want to let her down,”says Andy. “I didn’t get into another fight for the rest of high school.”After six months, he asked Kevin to cut his hair, and most of his anger disappeared. Two years later, he volunteered to teach youth soccer. And though few adults expected it from the boy with the grade-F, in 2010 he graduated on time from high school. After four years, Marianne calls Andy her third son. Andy has had no contact (联系) with his mom and stepfather since moving out, even though they still live in the neighborhood and say they’re pleased with how their son has turned out. And Andy, who recently joined the army, knows where he’s leading when he comes home on leave.Says Andy, “What were the chances of meeting someone living across the street who had a similar childhood, like Marianne, who would take me in and explain, ‘You can change your life’?”32. According to the text, why did Marianne take Andy in?A. Because the police would take Andy away.B. Because she didn’t want to see Andy go wrong.C. Because Andy was driven out by his stepfather.D.
