Have you ever looked toward the sky on a fall day and witnessed a group of migrating birds? If so, you probably noted the V-shaped formation of the birds or the birds flying in a ball-like formation. Why do birds fly this way? Many theories have been developed to explain the formation patterns of different types of birds. One theory is that birds fly in certain formations to take advantage of the laws of nature. The birds know that flying in a V-shaped pattern will save energy. Like the lead cyclist in a race who decreases wind force for the cyclists who follow, the lead bird cuts wind force for the birds that follow. This decrease in wind force means that the birds use up to 70 percent less energy during their flight. When the lead bird becomes tired, a more rested bird takes over that position. But saving energy is important for more than one reason. Sometimes food is short during migration flights. Keeping energy enables the birds to fly longer distances between meals. When food is sighted, the birds guide one another in a different way. When a bird identifies a familiar feeding area, it might turn around in order to signal the group to change direction. Then, this bird becomes the new leader. It helps guarantee that other birds will know exactly where it is going. Then the whole group makes a change in direction, gently streaming from the sky down to the ground. This formation is like an arrow pointing to the location of food.Scientists have also studied the birds that sometimes fly in a ball-like formation. Researchers believe that the birds come together if apredator(天敌)is spotted. The predator may then become impatient waiting for asingle bird to fly away from the group. The birds will often dip and dive as a group, frustrating even the most persistent enemy. Scientists reportthat this is a very effective method of defense against an attack. The birds care for their fellow fliers through teamwork. Astransportation expert Henry Ford once said, “If everyone is moving forwardtogether, then success takes care of itself.” When it comes to teamwork, these feathered fliers are a soaring success!1. When food is sighted, ____________.A. the group follows the discovererB. the lead bird decides what to doC. the discoverer leaves the groupD. the whole group forms a stream3. Now comes the terrifying news that cats look up to their owners as role models and copy their behaviour. Next time you reach for your fridge, think twice. If your kitty is watching, she is likely to overeat as well. What is your cat's IQ?In a new study from the University of Messina, it turns out that indoor cats who live closely to their owners “mirror” the lives of their caregivers. They sleep at the same time, eat at the same time, and can even become more or less social depending on the behaviour of their owners.“Cats are intelligent animals with a long memory, ”Jane Brunt, the executive director of the Catalyst Council, told Discovery News. “They watch and learn from us, noting the patterns of our actions, knowing where their food is kept and what time to expect to be fed, how to open the cupboard door that's been improperly closed, and where their feeding and toileting areasare.”Because cats copy our habits, if you spend a lot of time raiding(搜刮)the fridge, your cat willreturn to its food bowl for that midnight snack, too. According to the study, this explains why “human and cat overweight rates often seem to match”.So, if you feel guilty about leaving your precious kitty at home while you go to work, now you can feel even worse:you are making your cat fat! There's no word if drinking green tea and making sure you go to yoga will benefit your cat, but based on the study, it sounds like sticking to a healthy eating and sleeping schedule is best for both of you. There's a lot we can learn from our cats in return. “When they sit on our laps softly purring with rhythmic breathing and halfclosed eyes, the sense of peace and calm that comes over us is like a private lesson in inner meditation,”Brunt said. Sure. But cats don't have to sit in rush hour traffic for an hour a day or worry about their inlaws. They're probably pretty good at remaining calm. So, according to science, even though we assume that cats are not close to us all these years, it turns out they are in fact learning from us and looking up to us. Scary, huh?1.According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true?A.Cats can copy humans' schedule.B.Humans can learn from cats in some way.C.Cats are smart and have a long memory.D.Green tea and yoga can benefit cats.2.What does the underlined word “this”in Paragraph 5 refer to?A.Humans' keeping searching the fridge.B.Cats' going to their owners for food.C.Cats' copying humans' habit of looking for food.D.Humans' leaving cats home while working.3.What can we learn from our cats?A.To remain calm.B.To be able to copy.C.To stay proud.D.To look up to friends.4.The best title for the passage could be “________”.A.Your cat can bring you pleasureB.You are copying your catC.You can make your cat socialD.Your cat is copying your habit短文改错假定英语课上老师要求同桌之间交换修改作文,请你修改你同桌写的以下作文。

Three years ago, the president of Harvard, Lawrence H. Summers, got into trouble for questioning women’s“intrinsic (内在的)aptitude (能力)”for science and engineering. Recently, a study paid for by America’s National Scie nce Foundation has found that girls perform as well as boys on standardized math tests.Although boys in high school performed better than girls in math 20 years ago, the researchers found that is no longer the case. The reason, they said, is simple: Girls used to take fewer advanced math courses than boys, but now they are taking just as many.“Now that enrollment in advanced math courses is equalized, we don’t see gender differences in test performance,” said Marcia C. Linn of the University of Californ ia, Berkeley, a co-author of the study. “But people are surprised by these findings, which suggests to me that the stereotypes are still there.”The researchers looked at the average test scores of all students, the performance of the most gifted children and the ability to solve complex math problems. They found, in every category, that girls did as well as boys.Janet Hyde, a professor at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, who led the study, said the stereotypes about girls and math, had taken a toll (造成伤害).“The stereotype that boys do better at math is still held widely by teachers and parents,” hyde said. “And teachers and parents guide girls, giving them advice about what courses to take, what careers to pursue. I still hear anecdotes about guidance counselors (顾问)steering (指导)girls away from engineering, telling them they won’t be able to do the math.”The study also analyzed the gender gap on the math section of the SAT. Since more girls than boys go to college, about 100, 000 more girls than boys take the test, including lower-achieving girls who bring down the girls’ average score.1. What might be the reason to carry out the study?A. To put Harvard University to shame for its president’s prejudice against girls.B. To find out if there’s any gender gap in science.C. To help girls to earn equal social status as boys.D. To enroll more girls in advanced math courses in the university.2. Which statement about people’s opinions of girls is NOT true?A. People still find it hard to believe average girls perform in math as well as boys.B. Highly educated people are more likely to accept the fact that girls can do well in math.C. Many teachers and parents advise girls to avoid careers like engineering based on their talent.D. Some guidance counselors think careers related with math are not suitable for girls.3. We can learn from the text EXCEPT ______.A. girls used to perform worse than boys in math because they didn’t take as many advanced math coursesB. the stereotype about girls and math may lead to misguided choice of future careersC. the average lower scores of girls in SAT math test prove that boys do better in mathD. the public doesn’t accept outspoken prejudice against girls’ talent for math despite the stereotype4. The main purpose of writing the passage is to______.A. report the findings of a research into girls’ math abilityB. criticize those who hold the wrong belief that girls cannot do well in mathC. prove that the stereotype that girls do worse in math is wrongD. help girls regain confidence in learning math well【参考答案】1—4、BBCA阅读理解。

A Mountain of Green BeansAnother envelope in the mail. There’s my name, Alexander Spencer, typed on the front. I throw it under the bed. The piles of envelopes are growing. The envelopes were applications to all the colleges I was supposed to attend. I did open the first envelope. Then I saw the application, all those blank spaces I was supposed to fill with my own writing, spaces for my name and birth date and grade average and … statement of pu rpose. So I ate one green bean nine more times. My grandma doesn’t know about the envelopes, but she tells me anyone can do one thing every day.Back in my room, I lay down on the bed. Love, success, happiness, family and freedom----how important are these values to you? Here is one interview which explores the fundamental questions in life. Question: Could you introduce yourself first? Answer: My name is Misbah, 27 years old. I was born in a war-torn area. Right now I'm a web designer. Q: What are your great memories? A: My parents used to take us to hunt birds, climb trees, and play in the fields. For me it was like a holiday because we were going to have fun all day long. Those are my great memories. Q: Does your childhood mean a lot to you? A: Yes. As life was very hard, I used to work to help bring money in for the family. I spent my childhood working, with responsibilities beyond my age. However, it taught me to deal with problems all alone. I learnt to be independent. Q: What changes would you like to make in your life? A: If I could change something in my life, I'd change it so that my childhood could have taken place in another area. I would have loved to live with my family in freedom.
