It is genuinely hard to know.[C] I am about to make things more complicated by suggesting that what kind of facility an olderperson lives in may matter less than we have assumed. And that the characteristics adult children look for when they begin the search are not necessarily the things that make a difference to the people who are going to move in. I am not talking about the quality of care, let me hastily add.Nobody flourishes in a gloomy environment with irresponsible staff and a poor safety record. But an accumulating body of research indicates that some distinctions between one type of elder care and another have little real bearing on how well residents do.[D] The most recent of these studies, published in The journal of Applied Gerontology, surveyed 150Connecticut residents of assisted living, nursing homes and smaller residential care homes (known in some states as board and care homes or adult care homes). Researchers from the University of Connecticut Health Center asked the residents a large number of questions about their quality of life, emotional well-being and social interaction, as well as about the quality of the facilities.[E] “We thought we would see differences based on the housing types,” said the lead author of thestudy, Julie Robinson, an associate professor of medicine at the university. A reasonable assumption---don’t families struggle to avoid nursing homes and suffer real guilt if they can’t?[F] In the initial results, assisted living residents did paint the most positive picture. They were lesslikely to report symptoms of depression than those in the other facilities, for instance, and less likely to be bored or lonely. They scored higher on social interaction.[G] But when the researchers plugged in a number of other variables, such differences disappeared. It is not the housing type, they found, that creates differences in residents’ responses. “It is the characteristics of the specific environment they are in, combined with their own personal characteristics---how healthy they feel they are, their age and marital status, ” Dr. Robinson explained. Whether residents felt involved in the decision to move and how long they had lived there also proved significant.[H] An elderly person who describes herself as in poor health, therefore, might be no less depressedin assisted living even if her children preferred it than in a nursing home. A person who had input into where he would move and has had time to adapt to it might do as well in a nursing home as in a small residential care home, other factors being equal. It is an interaction between the person and the place, not the sort of place in itself, that leads to better or worse experiences.“You can’t just say, ‘Let’s put this person in a residential care home instead of a nursing home---she will be much better off, ” Dr. Robinson said. What matters, she added, “is a combination of what people brin g in with them, and what they find there.”[I] Such findings, which run counter to common sense, have surfaced before. In a multi-state studyof assisted living, for instance, University of North Carolina researchers found that a host of variables---the fa cility’s type, size or age; whether a chain owned it; how attractive the neighborhood was---had no significant relationship to how the residents fared in terms of illness, mental decline, hospitalizations or mortality. What mattered most was the residents’ physical health and mental status. What people were like when they came in had greater consequence than what happened once they were there.[J] As I was considering all this, a press release from a respected research firm crossed my desk, announcing that the five-star rating system that Medicare developed in 2008 to help families compare nursing home quality also has little relationship to how satisfied its residents or their family members are. As a matter of fact, consumers expressed higher satisfaction with the one-star facilities, the lowest rated, than with the five-star ones. (More on this study and the star ratings will appear in a subsequent post).[K] Before we collectively tear our hair out---how are we supposed to find our way in a landscape this confusing?---here is a thought from Dr. Philip Sloane, a geriatricia (老年病学专家) at the University of North Carolina:“In a way, that could be liberating for f amilies.”[L] Of course, sons and daughters want to visit the facilities, talk to the administrators and residents and other families, and do everything possible to fulfill their duties. But perhaps they don’t have to turn themselves into private investigators or Congressional subcommittees. “Families can look a bit more for where the residents are going to be happy,” Dr. Sloane said. And involving the future resident in the process can be very important.[M] We all have our own ideas about what would bring our parents happiness. They have their ideas, too. A friend recently took her mother to visit an expensive assisted living/nursing home near my town. I have seen this place---it is elegant, inside and out. But nobody greeted the daughter and mother when they arrived, though the visit had been planned; nobody introduced them to the other residents. When they had lunch in the dining room, they sat alone at a table.[N] The daughter feared her mother would be ignored there, and so she decided to move her into a more welcoming facility. Based on what is emerging from some of this research, that might have been as rational a way as any to reach a decision.36. Many people feel guilty when they cannot find a place other than a nursing home for their parents.37. Though it helps for children to investigate care facilities, involving their parents in the decision-making process may prove very important.38. It is really difficult to tell if assisted living is better than a nursing home.39. How a resident feels depends on an interaction between themselves and the care facility they live in.40. The author thinks her friend made a rational decision in choosing a more hospitable place over an apparently elegant assisted living home.41. The system Medicare developed to rate nursing home quality is of little help to find a satisfactory place.42. At first the researchers of the most recent study found residents in assisted living facilities gave higher scores on social interaction.43. What kind of care facility old people live in may be less important than we think.44. The findings of the latest research were similar to an earlier multi-state study of assisted living.45. A resident’s satisfaction with a care facility has much to do with whether they had participated in the decision to move in and how long they had stayed there.Section CDirections:There are 2 passages in this section. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D).You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet2 with a single line through the centre.Passage OneQuestions 46 and 50 are based on the following passage. As Artificial Intelligence (AI) becomes increasingly sophisticated, there are growing concerns that robots could become a threat. This danger can be avoided, according to computer science professor Stuart Russell, if we figure out how to turn human values into a programmable code.Russell argues that as robots take on more complicated tasks, it’s necessary to translate our morals into AI language. For example, if a robot does chores around the house, you wouldn’t want it to put the pet cat in the oven to make dinner for the hungry children. “You would want that robot preloaded with a good set of values,” said Russell. Some robots are already programmed with basic human values. For example, mobile robots have been programmed to keep a comfortable distance from humans. Obviously there are cultural differences, but if you were talking to another person and they came up close in your personal space, you wouldn’t think that’s the kind of thing a properly brought-up person would do.It will be possible to create more sophisticated moral machines, if only we can find a way to set out human values as clear rules.Robots could also learn values from drawing patterns from large sets of data on human behavior. They are dangerous only if programmers are careless. The biggest concern with robots going against human values is that human beings fail to so sufficient testing and they’ve produced a system that will break some kind of taboo (禁忌).One simple check would be to program a robot to check the correct course of action with a human when presented with an unusual situation. If the robot is unsure whether an animal is suitable for the microwave, it has the opportunity to stop, send out beeps (嘟嘟声), and ask for directions from a human. If we humans aren’t quite sure about a decision, we go and ask somebody else. The most difficult step in programming values will be deciding exactly what we believe in moral, and how to create a set of ethical rules. But if we come up with an answer, robots could be good for humanity.46. What does the author say about the threat of robots?A. It may constitute a challenge to computer programmers.B. It accompanies all machinery involving high technology.C. It can be avoided if human values are translated into their language.D. It has become an inevitable peril as technology gets more sophisticated.47. What would we think of a person who invades our personal space according to the author?A. They are aggressive.B. They are outgoing.C. They are ignorant.D. They are ill-bred.48. How do robots learn human values?A. By interacting with humans in everyday life situations.B. By following the daily routines of civilized human beings.C. By picking up patterns from massive data on human behavior.D. By imitating the behavior of property brought-up human beings.49. What will a well-programmed robot do when facing an unusual situation?A. keep a distance from possible dangers.B. Stop to seek advice from a human being.C. Trigger its built-in alarm system at once.D. Do sufficient testing before taking action.50. What is most difficult to do when we turn human values into a programmable code?A. Determine what is moral and ethical.B. Design some large-scale experiments.C. Set rules for man-machine interaction.D. Develop a more sophisticated program.Passage TwoQuestions 51 to 55 are based on the following passage. Why do some people live to be older than others? You know the standard explanations:keeping a moderate diet, engaging in regular exercise, etc. But what effect does your personality have on your longevity (长寿)? Do some kinds of personalities lead to longer lives? A new study in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society looked at this question by examining the personality characteristics of 246 children of people who had lived to be at least 100.The study shows that those living the longest are more outgoing, more active and less neurotic (神经质的) than other people. Long-living women are also more likely to be sympathetic and cooperative than women with a normal life span. These findings are in agreement with what you would expect from the evolutionary theory: Those who like to make friends and help others can gather enough resources to make it through tough times.Interestingly, however, other characteristics that you might consider advantageous had no impact on whether study participants were likely to live longer. Those who were more self-disciplined, for instance, were no more likely to live to be very old. Also, being open to new ideas had no relationship to long life, which might explain all those bad-tempered old people who are fixed in their ways.Whether you can successfully change your personality as an adult is the subject of a longstanding psychological debate. But the new paper suggests that if you want long life, you should strive to be as outgoing as possible.Unfortunately, another recent study shows that your mother’s personality may also help determine your longevity. That study looked at nearly 28,000 Norwegian mothers and found that those moms who were more anxious, depressed and angry were more likely to feed their kids unhealthy diets. Patterns of childhood eating can be hard to break when we’re adults, which may mean that kids of depressed moms end up dying younger.Personality isn’t destiny (命运), and everyone knows that individuals can learn to change. But both studies show that long life isn’t just a matter of your physical health but of your mental health.51. The aim of the study in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society is __________.A. to see whether people’s personality affects their life spanB. to find out if one’s lifestyle has any effect on their healthC. to investigate the role of exercise in living a long lifeD. to examine all the factors contributing to longevity52. What does the author imply about outgoing and sympathetic people?A. They have a good understanding of evolution.B. They are better at negotiating an agreement.C. They generally appear more resourceful.D. They are more likely to get over hardship.53. What finding of the study might prove somewhat out of our expectation?A. Easy-going people can also live a relatively long life.B. Personality characteristics that prove advantageous actually vary with times.C. Such personality characteristics as self-discipline have no effect on longevity.D. Readiness to accept new ideas helps one enjoy longevity.54. What does the recent study of Norwegian mothers show?A. Children’s personality characteristics are invariably determined by their mothers.B. People with unhealthy eating habits are likely to die sooner.C. Mothers’ influence on children may last longer than fathers’.D. Mothers’ negative personality characteristics may affect their children’s life spans.55. What can we learn from the findings of the two new studies?A. Anxiety and depression more often than not cut short one’s life span.B. Longevity results from a combination of mental and physical health.C. Personality plays a decisive role in how healthy one is.D. Health is in large part related to one’s lifestyle.Part ⅣTranslation(30 minutes) Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to translate a passage from Chinese into English. Beneath each question there are four choices respectively marked by letters A, B, C and D. Choose the right answer for each question. Write your answers on the answer sheet.Passage 1I’ve been writing for most of my life. The book Writing without Teachers introduced me to one distinction and one practice that has helped my writing processes tremendously. The distinction is between the creative mind and the critical mind. While you need to employ both to get to a finished result, they cannot work in parallel no matter how much we might like tothink so.Trying to criticize writing on the fly is possibly the single greatest barrier to writing that most of us encounter. If you are listening to that 5th grade English teacher correct your grammar while you are trying to capture a fleeting (稍纵即逝的) thought, the thought will die. If you capture the fleeting thought and simply share it with the world in raw form, no one is likely to understand. You must learn to create first and then criticize if you want to make writing the tool for thinking that it is.The practice that can help you past your learned bad habits of trying to edit as you write is what Elbow calls “free writing”. In free writing, the objective is to get words down on paper non-stop, usually for 15-20 minutes. No stopping, no going back, no criticizing. The goal is to get the words flowing. As the words begin to flow, the ideas will come from the shadows and let themselves be captured on your notepad or your screen. Now you have raw materials that you can begin to work with using the critical mind that you’ve persuaded to sit on the side and watch quietly. Most likely, you will believe that this will take more time than you actually have and you will end up staring blankly at the pages as the deadline draws near.Instead of staring at a blank start filling it with words no matter how bad. Halfway through you available time, stop and rework your raw writing into something closer to finished product. Move back and forth until you run out of time and the final result will most likely be far better than your current practices.41. When the author says the creative mind and the critical mind “cannot work in parallel” (Line 4, Para. 1) in the writing process, he means ________.[A] no one can be both creative and critical[B] they cannot be regarded as equally important[C] they are in constant conflict with each other[D] one cannot use them at the same time42. What prevents people from writing on is ________.[A] putting their ideas in raw form[B] attempting to edit as they write[C] ignoring grammatical soundness[D] trying to capture fleeting thoughts43. What is the chief objective of the first stage of writing?[A] To organize one’s thoughts logically.[B] To choose an appropriate topic.[C] To get one’s ideas down.[D] To collect raw materials.44. One common concern of writers about “free writing” is that ________.[A] it overstresses the role of the creative mind[B] it takes too much time to edit afterwards[C] it may bring about too much criticism[D] it does not help them to think clearly45. In what way does the critical mind help the writer in the writing process?[A] It refines his writing into better shape.[B] It helps him to come up with new ideas.[C] It saves the writing time available to him.[D] It allows him to sit on the side and observe.Passage 2When it comes to health, the poor are doubly cursed. Not only are they more prone to deadly infectious diseases than the rich, but they have far less access to the means of improvement. Twenty years ago, Paul Farmer, an American doctor and anthropologist (人类学者), set out to do something about this. Amid the political turmoil (混乱) and poverty of rural Haiti, he created a community based health care system called Zanmi Lasante, or Partners in Health. It not only delivers appropriate, affordable medical treatment to thousands of poor people, but goes beyond the clinic to address the social causes making them sick and keeping them from getting better. As Dr. Farmer argues, improving the health of the poor is not just a medical challenge, but a question of human rights. Tackling the inequality, racism, sexism and other forms of "structural violence" which oppress the poor is as critical as extending the drugs. Or as his Haiti patients put it, medicine without food is like washing one's hands and drying them in the dirt.Unfortunately, Dr. Farmer's powerful message is often weakened by his book's academic tone. It does, however, scream out in passages describing the human face of "structural violence". It is these personal stories that make Dr. Farmer's anger at such "stupid deaths" so compelling. The good doctor's motives and methods are better described in Mountains Beyond Mountains. This biography by Tracy Kidder traces Dr. Farmer from his unconventional upbringing and unusual education, shuttling (来回穿梭于) between the shacks of central Haiti and the halls of Harvard Medical School, to his later work around the world. Though well written, Mr. Kidder's book also makes for uncomfortable reading. The author is clearly close to his subject, having traveled with Dr. Farmer from the green poverty of Haiti to the tubercular whiteness of Russia. Too close, perhaps. The biographer seems to be seeking his subject's approval, rather than the other way round. Mr. Kidder writes, rather disturbingly, about his fear of disappointing Dr. Farmer, his own pain at wounding him with a critical remark and his relief at the doctor's forgiveness. When Mr. Kidder's health falls, this dependence becomes all the more intense. But rather than compromise the book's equity (公正), this intimacy serves to highlight Dr. Farmer's admirable, yet ultimately irritating, character. As Mr. Kidder observes, "Farmerwasn't put on earth to make anyone feel comfortable, except those lucky enough to be his patients or those unlucky enough to need him."46.What makes the "Partners in Health" system unique compared with traditional hospitals?[A] It makes attempts to help the poor on a social level.[B] It is aimed at treating poor people for free.[C] It is designed to help the poor rise from poverty.[D] It offers community help to those who are poor.47. What can be inferred from the last sentence of the second paragraph?[A] Hands should not be dried in the dirt after washing.[B] Medicine is also needed for cleaning hands.[C] Medicine is not a long term cure to their poor health.[D] Food can cure their disease better than any medicine.48. The disadvantage of Dr. Farmer's book seems to be that ________.[A] the plots in the book are not attractive enough[B] the way he tells the stories is not compelling enough[C] the anger he expresses at "stupid deaths" is too strong[D] the tone is not strong enough to arouse people's attention49. Mr. Kidder's book also makes for uncomfortable reading because ________.[A] Mr. Kidder himself has never been involved in Dr. Farmer's life[B] Mr. Kidder is afraid of making true comments on Dr. Farmer[C] Mr. Kidder's emotions prevent him from independent writing[D] Mr. Kidder is always waiting for Dr. Farmer's forgiveness50. It can be inferred from the last paragraph that ________.[A] Dr. Farmer only helped those who are lucky enough[B] Dr. Farmer may have severely criticized the society[C] Dr. Farmer was not actually making his patients comfortable[D] Dr. Farmer's job is not to make people comfortablePassage 3Unless we spend money to spot and prevent asteroids (小行星) now, one might crash into Earth and destroy life as we know it, say some scientists.Asteroids are bigger versions of the meteoroids (流星) that race across the night sky. Most orbit the sun far from Earth and don’t threaten us. But there are also thousands of asteroids whose orbits put them on a collision course with Earth.Buy $50 million worth of new telescopes right now. Then spend $10 million a year for the next 25 years to locate most of the space rocks. By the time we spot a fatal one, the scientists say, we’ll have a way to change its course. Some scientists favor pushing asteroids off course with nuclear weapons. But the cost wouldn’t be cheap. Is it worth it? Two things experts consider when judging any risk are: 1) How likely the event is; and 2) How bad the consequences if the event occurs. Experts think an asteroid big enough to destroy lots of life might strike Earth once every 500,000 years. Sounds pretty rare—but if one did fall, it would be the end of the world. “If we don’t take care of these big asteroids, they’ll take care of us,” says one scientist. “It’s that simple.”The cure, though, might be worse than the disease. Do we really want fleets of nuclear weapons sitting around on Earth? “The world has less to fear from doomsday (毁灭性的) rocks than from a great nuclear fleet set against them,” said a New York Times article.51. What does the passage say about asteroids and meteoroids?[A] They are heavenly bodies different in composition.[B] They are heavenly bodies similar in nature.[C] There are more asteroids than meteoroids.[D] Asteroids are more mysterious than meteoroids.52. What do scientists say about the collision of an asteroid with Earth?[A] It is very unlikely but the danger exists.[B] Such a collision might occur once every 25 years.[C] Collisions of smaller asteroids with Earth occur more often than expected.[D] It’s still too early to say whether such a collision might occur.53. What do people think of the suggestion of using nuclear weapons to alter the courses of asteroids?[A] It sounds practical but it may not solve the problem.[B] It may create more problems than it might solve.[C] It is a waste of money because a collision of asteroids with Earth is very unlikely.[D] Further research should be done before it is proved applicable.54. We can conclude from the passage that __________.[A] while pushing asteroids off course nuclear weapons would destroy the world[B] asteroids racing across the night sky are likely to hit Earth in the near future[C] the worry about asteroids can be left to future generations since it is unlikely to happen in our lifetime[D] workable solutions still have to be found to prevent a collision of asteroids with Earth55. Which of the following best describes the author’s tone in this passage?[A] Optimistic. [B] Critical. [C] Objective. [D] Arbitrary.IV. Translation. (2 points for each, altogether 10 points)Directions: Translate the following Chinese sentences into English by using the words given in the brackets. Write your answers on the answer sheet.56. 计算机远非破坏就业,而是能创造就业。
第三部分:阅读理解A Stage plays, at first, seem a lot like films. Both use actors and dialogue and scenery. But if you try to make a film by setting up a camera in front of the stage, you will find it won’t work. A film made in this way will leave the audience cold. )V1. Acting is such an over-crowded profession that the only advice that should be given to a young person thinking of going on the stage is "Don't!" But it is useless to try to discourage someone who feels that he must act, although the chances of his becoming famous are slim. The normal way to begin is to go to a drama school. Usually only students who show promise and talent are accepted, and the course lasts two years. Then the young actor or actress takes up work with a theatrical company (剧团), usually as an assistant stage manager. This means doing everything that there is to do in the theatre and occasionally acting in very small parts. It is very hard work indeed, the hours are long and the salary is tiny.Of course, some people have remarkable chances which lead to fame and success without this long and hard training. Connie Pratt, for example, was just an ordinary girl working in a bicycle factory. A film producer happened to catch sight of her one morning waiting at a bus stop, as he drove past in his car. He stopped and got out to speak to the girl. He asked if she would like to go to the film studio to do a test, and she thought he was joking. Then she got angry and said she would call the police. It took the producer twenty minutes to convince Connie that he was serious. The test was successful. And within a few weeks she was playing the leading part opposite one of the most famous actors of the day. But chances like this happen once in a blue moon!1). From the very beginning, the author puts it clearly that acting is a profession _________ .A. sought after by too manyB. too difficult for young peopleC. for slim people onlyD. one can go into without special training2). For someone who feels he must act, it is very likely that ________ .A. he will become a film star at long lastB. he will become a stage managerC. he will be well paidD. he will end up without any success3). The concluding sentence "chances like this happen once in a blue moon" means _______ .A. this is something which happens once in a whileB. this is a highly profitable chanceC. this is something highly possibleD. this is a very rare chance2. In the last 500 years, nothing about people—not their clothes, ideas, or languages—has changed as much as what they eat. The original chocolate drink was made from the seeds of the cocoa tree by South American Indians. The Spanish introduced it to the rest of the world during the 1500’s. And although it was very expensive, it quickly became fashionable. In London, shops where chocolate drinks were served became important meeting places. Some still exist today. The potato is also from the new world. Around 1600, the Spanish brought it from Peru to Europe, where it soon was widely grown. Ireland became so dependent on it that thousands of Irish people starved when the crop failed during the “potato famine”of 1845-1846, and thousands more were forced to leave their motherland and move to America. There are many other foods that have traveled from South American to the Old World. But some others went in the opposite direction. Brazil is now the world’s largest grower of coffee, and coffee is an important crop in Colombia and other South American countries. But it is native to Ethiopia, a country in Africa. It was first made into a drink by Arabs during the 1400’s.According to an Arabic legend, coffee was discovered when a person named Kaldi noticed that his goats were attracted to the red berried on a coffee bush. He tried one and experienced the wide-awake feeling that one–third of the world’s population now starts the day with.1). The resources of the library can be helpful even when we are doing something very informal, such as trying to devise a better way to measure attitudes toward music or looking for a better way to teach mathematics. The library can be equally helpful when we are doing something very formal, such as writing a dissertation (学位论文) or preparing an article for publication in a professional journal. In either case, our goal should be to use the library as a useful tool to help us understand and solve our problem. The following sections of this chapter will describe specific resources available in many libraries. In some cases you may already be aware of a resource and may use it frequently and successfully. In other cases you may be completely unfamiliar with a resource. Your goal should be to become aware of what is available and to know how to use each of these resources to help you solve the problem they are designed to solve. When educators have a piece of information that they want to share with their colleagues, they often make this information available in professional journals or at professional meetings. It would often be useful to have access to such information, and this chapter will describe the special services that enable us to locate such information.1). The library resources can be helpful when we _______.A. want to find a better way to measure attitudes toward musicB. are preparing a paper for a professional journalC. are writing a dissertationD. We find that bright children are rarely held back by mixed ability teaching. On the contrary, both their knowledge and experience are enriched. We feel that there are many disadvantages in streaming (把……按能力分班)pupils. It does not take into account the fact that children develop at different rates. It can have a bad effect on both the bright and the not-so-bright child. After all, it can be quite discouraging to be at the bottom of the top grade!Besides, it is rather unreal to grade people just according to their intellectual ability. This is only one aspect of their total personality. We are concerned to develop the abilities of all our pupils to the full, not just their academic ability. We also value personal qualities and social skills, and we find that mixed-ability teaching contributes to all these aspects of learning. In our classrooms, we work in various ways. The pupils often work in groups: this gives them the opportunity to learn to co-operate, to share, and to develop leadership skills. They also learn how to cope with personal problems as well as learning how to think, to make decisions, to analyze and evaluate, and to communicate effectively. The pupils learn from each other as well as from the teacher.Sometimes the pupils work in pairs; sometimes they work on individual tasks and assignments, and they can do this at their own speed. They also have some formal class teaching when this is appropriate. We encourage our pupils to use the library, and we teach them the skills they need in order to do this efficiently. An advanced pupil can do advanced work: it does not matter what age the child is. We expect our pupils to do their best, not their least, and we give them every encouragement to attain this goal.1). Some city and state governments responded by 17 the utility companies, but a number of cities began to supply these services themselves. 18 of these reforms argued that public ownership and regulation would 19 widespread access to these utilities and guarantee a 20 price.1.[A] eruption [B] corruption [C] interruption [D] provocation2.[A] disgrace [B] deterioration [C] dishonor [D] degradation3.[A] by origin [B] in part [C] at all [D] at random4.[A] proclaimed [B] exclaimed [C] claimed [D] reclaimed5.[A] superb [B] super [C] exceptional [D] superior6.[A] predominated [B] dominated [C] commanded [D] prevailed7.[A] feature [B] peculiarity [C] quality [D] attribute8.[A] deserted [B] departed [C] abolished [D] abandoned9.[A] reallocated [B] migrated [C] replaced [D] substituted10.[A] overwhelmed [B] overflowed [C] overtaken [D] preoccupied11.[A] embraced [B] adopted [C] hugged [D] contained12.[A] chaos [B] chores [C] chorus [D] outbreaks13.[A] at [B] by [C] out [D] in14.[A] public [B] municipal [C] republican [D] national15.[A] charge [B] take [C] cost [D] spend16.[A] distribute [B] deliver [C] transfer [D] transport17.[A] degenerating [B] generating [C] regenerating [D] regulating18.[A] Proponents [B] Opponents [C] Sponsors [D] Rivals19.[A] secure [B] ensure [C] reassure [D] incur20.[A] fair [B] just [C] square [D] objectiveSectionⅡReading ComprehensionPart ADirections:Read the following four texts. Answer the questions after each text by choosing A, B, C or D. Mark your answers on the ANSWER SHEET.(40 points)Text 1Many Americans harbor a grossly distorted and exaggerated view of most of the risks surrounding food. Fergus Clydesdale, head of the department of food science and nutrition at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, says bluntly that if the dangers from bacterially contaminated chicken were as great as some people believes, “the streets would be littered with people lying here and there.”Though the public increasingly demands no-risk food, there is no such thing. Bruce Ames, chairman of the bio-chemistry department at the University of California, Berkeley, points out that up to 10% of a plant’s weight is made up of natural pesticides. Says he: “Since plants do not have jaws or teeth to protect themselves, they employ chemical warfare.”And many naturally produced chemicals, though occurring in tiny amounts, prove in laboratory tests to be strong carcinogens—a substance which can cause cancer. Mushrooms might be banned if they were judged by the same standards that apply to food additives. Declares Christina Stark, a nutritionist at Cornell University: “We’ve got far worse natural chemicals in the food supply than anything man-made.”Yet the issues are not that simple. While Americans have no reason to be terrified to sit down at the dinner table, they have every reason to demand significant improvements in food and water safety. They unconsciously and unwillingly take in too much of too many dangerous chemicals. If food already contains natural carcinogens, it does not take much sense to add dozens of new man-made ones. Though most people will withstand the small amounts of contaminants generally found in food and water, at least a few individuals will probably get cancer one day because of what they eat and drink. To make good food and water supplies even better, the Government needs to tighten its regulatory standards, stiffen its inspection program and strengthen its enforcement policies. The food industry should modify some long-accepted practices or turn to less hazardous alternatives. Perhaps most important, consumers will have to do a better job of learning how to handle and cook food properly. The problems that need to be tackled exist all along the long-supply chain, from fields to processing plants tokitchens.21. What does the author think of the Americans’ view about their food?[A] They overstate the government’s interference with the food industry.[B] They are overoptimistic about the safety of their food.[C] They overestimate the hazards of their food.[D] They overlook the risks of the food they eat.22. The author considers it impossible to obtain no-risk food in that ___.[A] no food is free from pollution in the environment[B] pesticides are widely used in agriculture[C] many vegetables contain dangerous natural chemicals[D] almost all foods have additives23. By saying “they employ chemicals warfare” (Para. 2), Bruce Ames means ____.[A] plants produce certain chemicals to combat pests and diseases[B] plants absorb useful chemicals to promote their growth[C] farmers use man-made chemicals to dissolve the natural chemicals in plants[D] farmers use chemicals to protect plants against pests and diseases24. The reduction of the possible hazards in food ultimately depends on ____.[A] the government[B] the processor[C] the consumer[D] the grower25. What is the message the author wants to convey in the passage?[A] Eating and drinking have become more hazardous than before.[B] Immediate measures must be taken to improve food production and processing.[C] Health food is not a dream in modern society.[D] There is reason for caution but no cause for alarm with regard to food consumption.Text 2It is official: the American consumer, for so long the main force driving the global economy, has cracked. Figures released on Thursday October 30th showed that America’s economy shrank at an annualized rate of 0.3% in the third quarter. The story behind the breakdown was a far sharper decline in consumer spending, which makes up around two-thirds of GDP. It fell at an annualized rate of 3.1%, the first decline since 1991 and the biggest drop since 1980. Capital spending by firms also dropped, with house building still the weakest link.Spending growth is unlikely to resume soon. Earlier in the week the Conference board, a research firm, said that its index of consumer confidence fell to its lowest level since the survey began in 1967. The drop is alarming but not surprising. American consumers couldn’t withstand repeated blows to their financial well-being indefinitely. Household wealth has shriveled. Stock-markets are down by around a third since the start of the year. House prices in 20 big cities fell in August at an annual rate of 16.6% according to the S&P/Case-Shiller measure. The continued fallin property prices has left a large and growing fraction of households underwater on their home loans. The unemployment rate has risen to 6.1% and is set to continue upwards. Ford and General Motors, as well as Whirlpool, an appliance manufacturer, are among big American firms that have announced job cuts recently. Employment figures due for release on November 7th are likely to show that around another 175,000 jobs were lost in October, pushing the unemployment rate up to 6.3%, according to a survey of forecasts by Bloomberg. Fewer jobs mean lost income and less spending.During past recession scares any shortfall in income from jobs and investments could be bridged by a bank overdraft or loan. But credit is now scarce. Banks, fearful for their own survival, are willing to lend to anyone(even each other). Consumers are hardest hit by the dearth of credit partly because the value of the homes used as security for loans has depreciated. Unsecured loans are harder to come by. Before the crisis, consumer credit had grown by around 5% a year. In the year to August, it fell by 3.7%. In any case lost wealth is likely to encourage consumers to save harder and curb spending further. The upshot is that the economy’s backwards step in the latest quarter is likely to followed by another, far bigger one as the year ends. Economists at Morgan Chase recon that America’s GDP will decline at an annualized rate of 4% in the fourth quarter and fall again by 2% in the first three months of 2009. Household spending is set to follow a similar pattern. After a long unbroken spell of spending growth, consumers in America are finally shopped out.26. It can be inferred that American GDP would go up if ___.[A] global economy is recovered[B] consumer spending rises[C] services make more profit[D] more houses can be built27. According to paragraph 2, which of the following is true?[A] Consumer confidence has declined since the 1960s.[B] Stock-markets have dropped to the historical low.[C] Americans have experienced several financial hits.[D] In August the houses began to be sold more cheaply.28.In the past people could pull through crisis due to ___.[A] employment expansion[B] growth of consumer credit[C] assistance from the banks[D] dramatic cut in spending29. Experts at Morgan believe that ____.[A] the fourth quarter will see a greater decline[B] American consumers will willingly stop shopping[C] there is a sign of recovery for the coming year[D] consumer credit is likely to rise after the crisis30.The most appropriate of this passage is ____.[A] Financial crisis ahead[B] Unemployment drop[C] Saving for tomorrow[D] Consumer spending cutText 3On Wednesday, the Iowa Department of Public Health reported the first confirmed case of H1N1 in a house pet, a 13-year-old domestic shorthaired cat. The animal likely contracted the virus from its owners, veterinarians say, since two of the three family members living in the cat's household had recently suffered from influenza-like illness. Late last week, when the cat came down with flu-like symptoms --malaise, loss of appetite--its owners brought it to Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine for treatment. The family mentioned to the vet that they had also recently battled illness, which led to testing the pet for H1N1.It's not yet clear how vulnerable cats, dogs and other household animals may be to the new virus, but the Iowa cat's case reinforces just how different H1N1 is from seasonal flu viruses. Although some household cats and certain wild cats in zoos have gotten ill with avian influenza, and dogs have their own canine version of the flu virus, pets don't normally get sick with the regular human flu. "There has never been a report of human seasonal influenza affecting cats or dogs," says Dr. Julie Levy, director of Maddie's Shelter Medicine Program at the College of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Florida. It's possible that the Iowa cat's case may be a bellwether of future pet disease, but it's also possible it was just a fluke event. At the cat's advanced age, its immune system may not have been as adept at fending off influenza as that of a younger animal---similar to the vulnerability seen in aging humans. Still, says Dr. Ann Garvey, state public-health vet at the Iowa Department of Public Health, “We just don't know, we really don't.”Garvey notes that despite nearly 25,000 cases of positive, lab-confirmed H1N1 in people reported in the U.S. since last spring, the Iowa cat is the first pet to be documented with the virus. But before pet owners start suspecting Fido and Fluffy of being H1N1 hotbeds, Garvey stresses that so far, no cases of influenza of any kind in pets---including cases of bird flu---are known to have moved from animals into people. And even among the animals, the virus does not appear to spread easily, which may further suggest that pets are not ideal reservoirs for influenza. That's good news for pet lovers and flu worriers. And so is the fact that the cat seems to be recovering well from its bout with H1N1. "Both the owners and the cat are recovering," says Garvey. As for anyone else who is worried about spreading H1N1 flu to their pets, vets recommend following the same guidelines that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggest for protecting family members ---wash your hands frequently, cover your coughs and try to avoid close contact with your furry friends until you're well.31. Which of the following can be diagnosed as flu according to the passage?A. constant coughB. running noseC. decreased desire for eatingD. loss of weight32. Dr. Levy maintains that ______.A. human virus is unlikely to pass on to household pets.B. H1N1 can be treated likewise to regular seasonal flu.C. Wild cats can be particularly vulnerable to flu virus.D. Canine version of the flu virus is shared among cats.33. From paragraph 3, we may learn that ______.A. H1N1 may not be the sole contributor to the Iowa cat’s conditionB. Smaller animals are more proficient to defeat the invasion of fluC. The fact that aged people have higher risk is not proved true yetD. The immune system of the Iowa cat has already been destroyed34. According to Dr. Garvey, the flu virus _____.A. was first documented in the Iowa catB. could be easily transferred to human beings.C. spread faster than any other type of bird fluD. might be effortlessly fended off by various pets.35. The tone used by the author seems to be_____.A. neutralB. optimisticC. subjectiveD. worriedText 4“The purpose of this law is simple,” said President Lyndon Johnson on July 2nd 1964, as he prepared to sign the Civil Rights Act. It would forbid segregation at hotels and restaurants, he explained, and ban discriminatory rules for voter registration. It had passed both chambers of Congress with a two-thirds majority, meaning that both Democrats and Republicans had supported the bill. The law’s bulwark, he added, would be “voluntary compliance”. That was a wish as well as warning. The law may have been simple, but Johnson intended its effects to be profound: “to promote a more abiding commitment to freedom, a more constant pursuit of justice, and a deeper respect for human dignity”. And he knew that many whites, particularly in the South and in his home state of Texas, would resist its implementation. In the second week of April the Lyndon B. Johnson President library in Austin, the Texas capital, hosted a summit on civil rights, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the law’s passage. The speakers included advocates, athletes and artists; blacks, whites and Hispanics; leaders of the movement and people born years later; and politicians from both parties, including the heaviest hitter available. Only five people alive have held the office of president of the United States. Four of them, including the incumbent, spoke at the summit. The fact that the Civil Rights Act can now be the subject of a major conference is, in itself, a sign of how much the country has changed since its passage. In the early1960s opposition to racial equality was widespread, brutal and sometimes lethal. It was also a more or less mainstream political position at the time the law was passed, and for years thereafter, at least in parts of the country.Former president Jimmy Carter, who spoke on the first day of the summit, recalled that when he was elected governor of Georgia in 1970, segregation in public services such as schools was the norm, even though it was illegal. Even today, he continued, racial inequality can be seen in employment statistics and education outcomes. “Too many people”, he warned, “are at ease with the still existing disparity.”36. According to the first paragraph, the Civil Rights Act would ___.[A] ban voters from registration[B] prohibit racial discrimination[C] receive welcome from the public[D] gain the support of all Americans37. It can be implied in the second paragraph that ___.[A] the law was so ambitious that it would fail[B] the implementation of the law would be easy[C] a majority of black people would resist the law[D] the law might be more popular among the black38. The word “heaviest hitter”(Line 5, para.3) most probably means ___.[A] the heaviest persons[B] the eldest politicians[C] the most excellent killers[D] the most important persons39.The Civil Rights Act has become the theme of a meeting because .[A] it has had profound influence[B] it has cultivated many leaders[C] it has changed the whole world[D] it has eliminated racial inequality40.It can be learned from the last paragraph that .[A] racial discrimination has been eliminated at present[B] segregation in public services are still common now[C] many people are indifferent to racial inequality today[D] disparity can still be seen in most places of the countryPart BDirections:Read the following text and answer the questions by choosing the most suitable subheading from the list A-G for each numbered paragraph(41-45). (10 points)[A] MBA program boom in South Africa[B] Current assessment of MBA programs[C] Views on the rankings of MBA programs[D] Abundance of MBA programs worldwide[E] Rankings are misleading[F] Variation in MBA courses[G] Prominence as a factor in assessmentChoosing a MBA ProgramBusiness school enrollment has jumped in the past few years as increasing numbers of students seek careers in the world. The rising demand has encouraged intense competition and growth among business programs.41. ______________________________________Students find deciding on a MBA program to be a daunting task. This is in part due to the proliferation of options. There are now more than 1,000 MBA programs in the United States, 700 in Europe---including over 300 in Britain--- and some 525 in the rest of the world, with the greatest concentration in the Asia-Pacific region. The boom has recently hit South Africa as well, where ten years ago, the nation offered half a dozen programs. Now more than 40 are provided, most by foreign business schools. In some respects, the schools differ little--- 75 percent of them are general management programs. But the options remain, with full-time programs accounting for only 42 percent of the total, the rest being part-time, modular and distance learning.42. ______________________________________Some full-time programs are delivered through evening-only lectures, and some modular programs are full-time because of so much project work. More than 90 percent of the programs are in English, the others being offered in 23 languages with Spanish the most common. Many programs---especially the executive ones---require years of experience before admission. Yet “executive”can also define a part-time, accelerated program. The potential student---prepared to spend around﹩15,000 per year--- faces a bewildering array of products, often described in inconsistent terminology but with no essential difference in instruction.43. ______________________________________Business schools, with a few notable exceptions, have not clearly explained their assessment comparison criteria. They argue that a MBA is a MBA, differing only in the name and cost of the issuing school. In order to help the layman, newspapers have often stepped in to shed light on this confusion, judging schools and programs, and providing rankings.44. ______________________________________Applicants prefer rankings, but the school for them most part do not. European schools, in particular, argue that rankings are misleading as they may use a narrow range of often-inappropriate measures which fail to reveal the true competence of unique programs. Several schools have contested and boycotted league tables. Nevertheless, the number of business schools which participate in rankings is actually growing, in part because rankings tell potential customers what they need to know. Since business schools must market to applicants as if they were consumers, most take rankings seriously.45. ______________________________________A ranking is just one factor that underpins the success of schools and MBA programs. The programs must not only rank highly, they must also be known. Schools want their programs---and graduates want their degrees---to receive instant recognition and respect. Until recently, prominence has been largely overlooked in the assessment of MBA programs, but the Internet now provides another channel of communication and reputation for schools and their market. The MBA is the principal product in the most market-oriented sector of higher education. Given the globalization of business, increased communication, and the ability to deliver content to individuals wherever they are, the complexity and competitiveness of this pioneering educational marketplace can only increase.Section ⅢTranslation46.Directions:Translate the following text into Chinese. Write your translation on the ANSWER SHEET.(15 points)It is a well-known fact that there are constant conflicts among different groups of people, and that people tend to blame their misfortunes on some outside other groups for their misfortunes. What are the causes of group prejudice? There seems to be little doubt that one of the principal causes of prejudice is fear: in particular the fear that the interests of our own group are going to be endangered by the actions of another. This is less likely to be the case in a stable, relatively unchanging society in which the members of different social and occupational groups know what to expect of each other, and know what to expect for themselves. In times of rapid social and economic change, however, new occupations and new social roles appear, and people start looking jealously at each other to see whether their own group is being left behind.Section ⅣWritingPart A47.Directions:You are scheduled to head for a job interview tomorrow.
