On the night we arrived, we discovered that “our family〞 was living in a trailer(拖车) that was in poor condition. A crew had been working on it for two weeks, but every time they finished one problem, another surfaced. We decided the only reasonable solution was to build a new house—something unusual but necessary under these circumstances. The family was overjoyed with their new house that was twenty by thirty feet with three bedrooms, a bath and a kitchen. On Tuesday of that week, while we were eating lunch together, I asked the family's three boys, Josh, Eric and Ryan, “What do you want for your new room?〞Expecting toys and other gadgets that children usually ask for, we were astonished when Josh responded, “I just want a bed.〞The boys had never slept in a bed! They were accustomed to plastic mats. That night we had a meeting and decided that beds would be the perfect gift. On Thursday night, a few adults in our group drove to the nearest city and bought beds and new bedding. When we saw the delivery truck coming, we told the family about the surprise. We could hardly contain ourselves. It was like watching excited children on Christmas morning. That afternoon, as we fitted the frames of the beds together, Eric ran into the house to wat ch us. Too dirty to enter his room, he observed with wideeyed enthusiasm from the doorway. As my father slipped a pillowcase onto one of the pillows, Eric asked, “What is that?〞“A pillow, 〞 he replied.“What do you do with it?〞 Eric continued to ask.“When you go to sleep, you put your head on it, 〞 I answered softly. Tears came to my eyes as my father handed Eric the pillow.“Oh…that's soft, 〞 he said, hugging it tightly. Now, when my sister or I start to ask for something that seems urgent, mydad gently asks, “Doyouhaveapillow?〞We know exactly what he means.16.The writer's first volunteer project was________.A.working on a poor trailerB.helping a poor familyC.donating beds and beddingD.dealing with a housing problem17.On hearing Josh's answer, the writer was shocked because________.A.the family lived in a trailerB.he expected to get some toysC.he didn't know what a bed wasD.the boys had no bed to sleep in18.From the passage, we can learn that Eric had never seen________ before.A.a trailer B.a truckC.a pillow D.a house19.By saying “Doyouhaveapillow?〞, the writer's father meansthat________.A.what they want to get may be unnecessaryB.they should not waste money on small thingsC.they should do more volunteer work for the poorD.what he will buy is not what they want but a pillowⅢ.阅读表达Women make better drivers than men for many reasons. Why is that? Wouldn'tyou think that competing at who has better driving abilities is pointless? If you ask me, I'd like to say, men know that women are better drivers but do not havethe courage to admit the truth.Unlike men, women stop for directions when they have no idea where they are going. Women don't drive around for hours pointlessly wasting a tank of gas only to find themselves heading in the wrong direction. Have you ever been in a car with a man who is lost? He tells you to shut up when you begin to open your mouth. And every five minutes or so he takes a turn going fortyfive miles per hour only to find out he's made another wrong turn.Speeding is what men do best on the road. Traffic is not a race. There is a reason why men get more speeding tickets than women. Not because women trick to get out of tickets but only because they don't speed. Women don't risk puttingtheir own lives and the lives of others in danger. In other words, they have more responsibility for life.My largest issue with male drivers is how a majority of them drive with one hand on the wheel and the other hand doing only God knows what. The seat is backed as far as possible. They're totally lost in loud music beyond a necessary level. You don't ever see women driving like that.I feel that the above evidence more than proves my points that women are queens of the road. Oh, men, if you want to continue criticizing women for being bad drivers, bring it on. We know you lack confidence, or else you wouldn't be wasting your valuable time making jokes about the ones you may choose to spend the rest of your days with.20. Airlines have stopped or changed the flights across the Atlantic Ocean, leaving hundreds of passengers stuck in airports.Grimsvom is one of the largest and most active volcanoes in Europe. What makes Grimsvom different is that it lies under a huge glacier(冰川) of ice up to 12 meters thick. The hot volcano heats up the ice above it, which then forms a layer(层)of water between the glacier and the volcano. This layer of water puts pressure on the volcano, keeping it stable. As the water flows out from under the glacier, the pressure lifts. The lava(岩浆) from the volcano then comes up to the surface. This is exactly what happened today. Now, airlines have to make changes to their flights so as not to fly through the clouds of volcanic ash. According to KLM,one of Europe's biggest airlines, airplanes cannot go under the cloud or over it. Going through the cloud can result in ash getting stuck in the airplane's engines, causing damage to the plane. The eruption has also caused problems for animals in Iceland. The volcano left ash and sharp glasslike rocks all over the countryside. Farmers are keeping their animals inside to stop them from eating ashcovered grass or the sharp object.11.What makes Grimsvom different from other volcanoes?A.It is below ice.B.It lies under the sea.C.It is the largest volcano.D.Its lava affects the airlines.12.What keeps Grimsvom still?A.The slow flow of water.B.The low water temperature.C.The thick glacier.D.The water pressure.13.Which of the following is the result of the volcanic eruption?A.People stop traveling in Europe.B.Airlines suffer from the loss of planes.C.It becomes dangerous for animals to eat outside.D.Farmers have lost many of their animals.14.This text is most probably taken from________.A.a research paper B.a newspaper reportC.a class presentation D.a geography textbookⅢ.完成句子阅读下列各小题,根据每句后的汉语提示,用句末括号内的英语单词完成句子。

Thesewebbased forums (论坛) for discussing ideas, experiences or opinions allow students to discuss publicly what they are studying with other students and experts outside their own university. “I really encourage them to put their personal opinion in there, provided they are informed and backed up with evidence.”BartlettBragg said because a lot of academics in her field of electronic or elearning now have their own blogs, students can engage directly with them. She said one of the most powerful facilities in weblogs is pinging, which involves a person posting a comment about someone else's work on their own blog. They use the “Trackback” tool to notify the author when they have published the comment, basically inviting them to discuss it.“They get such a buzz when they make a comment onanother person outside the boundaries of the institution and that person responds, or even gives them some f urther reading, ”she said. “They are getting new perspectives that I can't give them in a normal lecture.”36.BartlettBragg would like her students to ________.A.make comments on her teachingB.spend more time on the webC.be taught in a conventional wayD.get new ideas from the webbased forums37.The “Trackback” tool is used to ________.A.exchange views with the authorB.inform the author of a newly published commentC.invite the author to replyD.send a comment to the author38.BartlettBragg's attitude towards introducing blogs into teaching is________.A.critic B.doubtfulC.supportive D.neutral39.The fourth paragraph mainly talks about ________.A.the special nature of blogsB.the popularity of blogsC.the advantages of blogsD.BartlettBragg's teaching styles课时作业(五)Ⅰ.1.B 考查动词短语辨析。

He'd need a fan or a strong wind to help him put them out. While many people in China will remember Confucius on his special day, few people in the United States will give him a passing thought. It's nothing personal. Most Americans don't even remember the birthdays of their own national heroes. But this doesn't mean that Americans don't care about Confucius. In many ways he has become a bridge that foreigners must cross if they want to reach a deeper understanding of China. In the past two decades, the Chinese studies programs have gained huge popularity in Western universities. More recently, the Chinese government has set up Confucius Institutes in more than 80 countries. These schools teach both Chinese language and culture. The main courses of Chinese culture usually include Chinese art, history and philosophy(哲学).Some social scientists suggest that Westerners should take advantage of the ancient Chinese wisdom to make up for the drawbacks of Western philosophy. Students in the United States, at the same time, are racing to learn Chinese. So they will be ready for life in a world where China is an equal power with the United States. Businessmen who hope to make money in China are reading books about Confucius to understand their Chinese customers. So the old thinker's ideas are still alive and well.Today China attracts the West more than ever, and it will need more teachers to introduce Confucius and Chinese culture to the West.As for the old thinker, he will not soon be forgotten by people in the West, even if his birthday is.20.The opening paragraph is mainly intended to ________.A.provide some key facts about ConfuciusB.attract the readers' interest in the subjectC.show great respect for the ancient thinkerD.prove the popularity of modern birthday celebrations21.We can learn from Paragraph 4 that American students ________.A.have a great interest in studying ChineseB.take an active part in Chinese competitionsC.try to get high scores in Chinese examsD.fight for a chance to learn Chinese22.What is the best title for the passage?A.Forgotten Wisdom in AmericaB.Huge Fans of the Chinese LanguageC.Chinese Culture for WesternersD.Old Thinker with a Big Future23.The passage is likely to appear in ________.A.a biographyB.a history paperC.a newspaperD.a philosophy textbookⅢ.补全对话W: Sorry, I'm late. Now it is an ecological disaster area.Nauru's heartbreaking story could have one good consequence—other countries might learn from its mistakes.F or thousands of years, Polynesian people lived on the remote island of Nauru, far from western civilization. The first European to arrive was John Fearn in 1798. He was the British captain of the Hunter, a whaling ship. He called the island Pleasant Island.H owever, because it was very remote, Nauru had little communication with Europeans at first. Then whaling ships and other traders began to visit, bringing guns and alcohol. These elementsdestroyed the social balance of the twelve family groups on the island. A ten-year civil war started, which reduced the population from 1,400 to 900.N auru's real troubles began in 1899 when a British mining company discovered phosphate(磷酸盐) on the island. In fact, it found that the island of Nauru was nearly all phosphate, which is a very important fertilizer for farming. The company began mining the phosphate.A phosphate mine is not a hole in the ground; it is a strip-mine. When a company strip-mines, it removes the top layer of soil. Then it takes away the material it wants. Strip-mining totally destroys the land. Gradually, the lovely island of Nauru started to look like the moon.I n 1968, Nauru became one of the richest countries in the world. Every year the government received millions and millions of dollars for its phosphate.U nfortunately, the leaders invested the money unwisely and lost millions of dollars. In addition, they used millions more dollars for personal expenses. Soon people realized that they had a terrible problem—their phosphate was running out. Ninety percent of their island was destroyed and they had nothing. By 2000, Nauru was almost financially ruined. Experts say that it would take approximately $433,600,000 and more than 20 years to repair the island. This will probably never happen.36. What might be the author's purpose in writing the text?A. To seek help for Nauru's problems.B. To give a warning to other countries.C. To show the importance of money.D. To tell a heartbreaking story of a war.37. What was Nauru like before the Europeans came?A. Rich and powerful.B. Modern and open.C. Peaceful and attractive.D. Greedy and aggressive.38. The ecological disaster in Nauru resulted from ________.A. soil pollutionB. phosphate overminingC. farming activityD. whale hunting39. Which of the following was a cause of Nauru's financial problem?A. Its leaders misused the money.B. It spent too much repairing the island.C. Its phosphate mining cost much money.D. It lost millions of dollars in the civil war.40. What can we learn about Nauru from the last paragraph?A. The ecological damage is difficult to repair.B. The leaders will take the experts' words seriously.C. The island was abandoned by the Nauruans.D. The phosphate mines were destroyed.课时作业(十五)Ⅰ.1.C考查非谓语动词。

poetry first came to be recognized at the Tang Dynasty.Readers of many different periods have considered Du Fu to be the greatest poet of the Chinese tradition.Such general agreement can partially be explained by the immense variety of his works, which hold up quite well to different tastes and historical changes in fashion.Like Shakespeare in English tradition,Du Fu's poetry came to be so deeply bound up with the constitution of literary value that generation after generation of poets and critics rediscovered themselves and their interests in some aspect of the poet.Chinese critics from the Song Dynasty referred to Du Fu as the “poet-historian”.Both before and after the An Lushan Revolt,Du Fu witnessed a typical political and social situation:the common people still lived in poverty while the emperor and his top officials enjoyed a foolishly luxurious life.He composed many poems such as Song of the War Chariots,Three Officials, and Three Departures. His poems expressed his dissatisfaction with the government and his great pity for the common people.Du Fu used his poems to comment on current events and historical images.Du Fu became the historian by creating his responses to particular situations.Du Fu was talented. When he was young,he wanted to get a good job in the government.Unfortunately Du Fu was refused several times. It was in his fifties that he began to serve as a minor official in Chang'an(Xi'an).Gongbu was his official title and probably he was in charge of the local industry.Du Fu was not a skilled survivor in government politics. He was dismissed in the form of a transfer to the post of personnel administrator in Huazhou and so left Chang'an.Du Fu soon gave up this minor post in disgust and set off with his family to Qinzhou in the northwest. After a short stay he moved on again and in 759 he arrived in Chengdu. He set up a modest cottage with some money he borrowed from his friend who served as a local governor. In the cottage he had a simple and peaceful life for three years, writing about 240 poems.Mostly inspired by the cottage, the stream nearby and the scenery in Chengdu, these poems give the impression that he was happier in Chengdu than any other time in his life. The poems of this period sound relaxed and happy.Du Fu left Chengdu after 762 and wandered in the southern provinces and eventually died of illness in 770.After his death, the people of Chengdu built a shrine on the site of his garden to honor him, which is known as part of Du Fu Thatched Cottage now.1.Why does the author compare Du Fu to Sometimes owners forget that their pets are just as used to the warm shelter(住所) as they are. Some owners will leave their animals outside for a long period of time, thinking that all animals are used to living outdoors. This can put their pets in danger of serious illness. There are things you can do to keep your animal warm and safe.Keep your pets inside as much as you can when the weather is bad. If you have to take them out, stay outside with them. When you're cold enough to go inside, they probably are too. If you must leave them outside for a long time, make sure they have a warm, solid shelter against the wind, thick bedding, and plenty of non-frozen water. If left alone outside, dogs and cats can be very smart in their search for warm shelter. They can dig into snow banks or hide somewhere. Watch them closely when they are left outdoors, and provide them with shelter of good quality. Keep an eye on your pet's water. Sometimes owners don't realize that a water bowl has frozen and their pet can't get anything to drink. Animals that don't have clean and unfrozen water may drink dirty water outside, which may contain something unhealthy for them.16.What do we learn about pets from Paragraph 1?A.They are often forgotten by their owners.B.They are used to living outdoors.C.They build their own shelters.D.They like to stay in warm places.17.Why are pet owners asked to stay with their pets when they are out in cold weather?A.To know when to bring them inside.B.To keep them from eating bad food.C.To help them find shelters.D.To keep them company.18.If pets are left on their own outdoors in cold weather, they may ________.A.run short of clean waterB.dig deep holes for funC.dirty the snow nearbyD.get lost in the wild19.What is the purpose of this text?A.To solve a problem.B.To give practical advice.C.To tell an interesting story.D.To present a research result.Ⅲ.短文改错假定英语课上老师要求同桌之间交换修改作文,请你修改你同桌写的以下作文。
