Nothing but 用法总结
Nothing but是一种强调句式，是表示否定的最高级，意思是只有，仅仅只有，完全只有，只不过，别无他法。
一、nothing but 在句中常作主语、宾语、表语或定语：
1、作主语：
Nothing but the truth will do.
只有真理才够格。
2、作宾语：
The police found nothing but a few pieces of broken glass.
警方仅仅发现了几块碎玻璃。
3、作表语：
He is nothing but a thief.
他不过是一个小偷。
4、作定语：
They want nothing but apologies.
他们只需要道歉就可以了。
二、nothing but 的否定义力用法
1、表示“只有（否定）”：
There is nothing but destruction around us.
我们四周只剩下毁灭一片。
2、表示“不过是（否定）”：
He is nothing but a fool.
他不过是个傻子。
3、表示“只不过（否定）”：
She wanted nothing but money.
她只不过想要金钱。
nothing but（除……而外；什么也没有；只有）后面可接(1) 名词或代词：For miles and miles I could see nothing except (= but) a great fire and lots of smoke. 一连好几英里，除了大火和浓烟我什么也看不见。
Under the soil there is nothing but sand. 在这层土壤下边只有沙子。
there is nothing but you can do.没有什么你做不了的！（没有什么可以难倒你。
）（准关系代词）There is no one but is interested in it.没有人不会对它感兴趣。
（准关系代词）There is nothing but he is fond of.没有什么东西是他不喜欢的。
（准关系代词）He is nothing but a child.他只不过是个孩子。
=He is but a child.He is only a child.He is no more than a child.（2）不定式：A cold-blooded animal has no choice but to lie down and sleep. 冷血动物别无选择，只好躺下来睡觉。
（注：这种句型中的不定式通常要带to；但当其前面的动词是do，或只有情态动词时，but 后面的不定式要省去to。
例如：He did nothing but sleep all day long. 他什么也不干，成天睡觉。
I can but obey it.（= I can do nothing but obey it.）我只能服从。
再如：Politeness costs nothing but wins everything. 这是一句谚语，意为彬彬有礼，惠而不费，或者理解为和气生财。
nothing but 后跟to do 还是do, 要看主句的动词，前后一致I can do nothing but wait. (前面原形，后面原形）I am going to do nothing but to wait. (前面不定，后面不定式）。
b u t的常见用法讲解介词but表示“除……外”，即英语except, other than或not including的意思，是最常用的介词之一。
主要用法有以下几点：①与no, no one, none, nobody, nothing, nowhere等词连用。
例如：No one can do it but him.只有他才能担当此任。
/None but him knows this plant.只有他认识这植物。
I heard nothing but the wind.除了风声，我什么也没听到。
②与all, anything, anywhere, every, everybody, everyone等词连用。
例如：You were all wrong but me.除我外，你们都错了。
Everybody arrived on time but yourself.大家都按时到达，就是你自己没有。
Have you ever been to anywhere else but Beijing? 除了北京外你还去过别的地方吗？③与who, what, where及形容词最高级等连用。
例如：Who but a fool would do such a thing? 除傻瓜外，谁还会干这样的事情？What is she but my wife? 她不是我的妻子还会是什么呢？He is the thinnest man in our school but Mr He.除何先生外，他是我们学校里最瘦的人。
④跟名词、代词、数词、形容词、副词、介词短语或名词性从句作宾语。
例如：None but his dog saved him.除了他的狗以外，没有人救了他。
I have written all my letters but one.我只差一封信就写完了。
He felt all but dead with fatigue. 他感到累得要死。
nothing but谓语单复数Nothing but单复数为标题Nothing but是一个常用的短语，表示“除了……之外什么都不是”，在句子中作为副词短语使用。
那么，以Nothing but为标题，我们可以从不同的角度来阐述这个短语的意义和用法。
一、Nothing but的基本意义Nothing but意为“只有，仅仅”，用于强调某事物是唯一或是除此之外别无其他。

）4. 作为形容词短语修饰名词，表示除了该名词之外没有其他的。
例如：“I have nothing but admiration for her.”（我对她除了钦佩之外别无其他。

She was the last but one to arrive. 她是倒数第二个到达的。
（句中but 仍为介词。
“除了一个以外的最后一个”正好就是“倒数第二个”。
不定式to arrive 作后置定语。
）She did nothing but smile at us from beginning to end. 她从头到尾只是对我们微笑。
（介词but 后接动词不定式。
当前面动词出现do 时，不定式前的to 在but 后就不用了。
）If the bird did not find land, it would have no choice but to return to the ship. 如果鸟没有发现陆地，它就别无选择，只有飞回船上。
（本句but 后必须用带to 的不定式，因为前面没有出现实意动词do。
）三、nothing but… 和nothing else but… 的用法（不限于上面第5、6 例）It is nothing but a home computer. 这只不过是一台家用计算机。
