Milla is very fit for her age, and she proved it in completing the BattleFrog Xtreme 24-hour race in Miami.Milla also used the event to inspire other kids to be active, and show how competing in obstacle racing has helped her deal with being bullied at school. “We wanted to make her feel more empowered and make her feel that she wasn’t weak, and that changed her whole mindset,” her father said.In preparing for the 24-hour race, Milla trained 20 hours a week for 90 days, doing exercise in the gym for 4 hours every day after school.“The reactions are 90 percent good, but some are totally negative,” Christian said. “I’ve had people message me on Facebook saying I’m a child abuser, and that no 9-year-old should be doing a 24-hour race. But her own doctors were there supporting her and cheering her on. I want her to be a kid, and this is just something she really wants to do.”CrossFit and obstacle course racing have also helped Christian turn around his life. Researchers have discerned the Wakatobi sunbird, a new species that lives on the small Wakatobi Islands, located in central Indonesia. They also studied olive-backed (橄榄背的) sunbirds and black sunbirds and found that some of the birds they examined actually belonged to some previously unrecognized species. The new Wakatobi sunbird looks similar to the olive-backed sunbird, but has darker feathers, shorter wings, and a higher-toned song. Zoologists believe that because it has such short wings, it never spread beyond the tiny islands. The olive-backed sunbird, however, can fly long distances, so it was able to inhabit other locations. These discoveries were part of a long-time cooperation between scientists at Trinity College Dublin and Universitas Halu Oleo in Sulawesi, Indonesia.“Specifically, we became interested in the Wakatobi sunbird because of the work of Ernst Hartert, a German bird expert active at the beginning of the 20th century,” Fionn O Marcaigh, first author on the paper, says. “He described the Wakatobi sunbird as a population with distinctive dark feathers, but he and the rest of the scientific community eventually decided that it was only a subspecies of the widespread olive-backed sunbird. We were eager to use modern methods to put this to the test.”For their research, scientists used DNA, recordings of songs and body measurement analysis to compare the sunbirds they studied, “We used a system called integrative taxonomy, which combines data on a number of aspects of the birds, including their songs, feathers, and body structures,” O Marcaigh says. “We recorded their songs using digital recorders, measured live birds caught and released by licensed netters, and used computational statistics to analyze the differences.” The scientists also obtained genetic samples which they analyzed in the lab and they found that the patterns they found were also reflected in the birds’ DNA.“I’m excited that we’ve added to the list of known species from this wonderful part of the world,” O Marcaigh says.46.What does the underlined word “discerned” in paragraph 1 probably mean?A.Overestimated.B.Imagined.C.Overlooked.D.Identified. 47.How does the Wakatobi sunbird differ from the olive-backed sunbird?A.It has colorful wings.B.It flies shorter distances.C.It lives throughout Indonesia.D.It sings more beautiful songs.48.What can we know about Ernst Hartert?A.He is a scientist from Universitas Halu Oleo.B.He still takes an active part in bird research.C.He is the first scientist to use DNA to study birds.D.He inspired the researchers’ interest in the Wakatobi sunbird.49.Why did O Marcaigh study the Wakatobi sunbird?A.To determine its category.B.To investigate its habitat and behavior.C.To analyze its genetic makeup.D.To continue the study of Ernst Hartert. 50.Which aspect of the research does paragraph 5 mainly talk about?A.Its methods.B.Its theories.C.Its impact.D.Its background. To put it simply, stress can be the father of growth, while a crisis can be the mother of innovation. The notion that great good can emerge from great adversity (逆境) is as old as the legend of the great phoenix (凤凰), who not only arises but soars to new heights from its own ashes. In 1598, William Shakespeare penned the play As You Like It. One of the most famous lines from that play is spoken in Act 2 Scene 1 by Duke Senior, “Sweet are the uses of adversity which, like the toad (癞蛤蟆), ugly and venomous, wears yet a precious jewel in his head.” Even 500 years ago, the potential value of adversity was recognized, not by a great healer, but by a great playwright. Can this really be the case?Fast-forward to the great silent film star Mary Pickford. She was called the most popular actress in the world in the 1910s and 1920s. Failing to continue acting with the advent of the “talkies”(movies with recorded sound), she co-founded the film company United Artists. Shifting her talents to producing and directing, she became the most powerful woman in the entertainment industry. She once noted, “You may have a fresh start any moment you choose, for this thing that we call ‘failure’ is not the falling down, but the staying down.”Rather than fear and try to avoid adversity, perhaps we should accept the inevitability (必然) of adversity and prepare for it. Indeed, positive things can emerge from adversity.Adversity reveals true opportunities for those preparing to take advantage. Dr. John Krumboltz’s happenstance theory states that career and life development is best fostered by preparing for opportunities that you may not know even exist in the current moment. Numerous unpredictable factors are potentially shaping the future. These include the crises adversity brings. In Friedrich Nietzsche’s book, Behold the Man, the German philosopher writes that a person who has “turned out well” could be recognized by the ability to take advantage of and prosper from adversity, just as he wrote before, “What does not kill him makes him stronger.”So, the next time adversity enters your life, will you run from it, or will you embrace it and use it as a step ping stone to greater happiness and success?51.Why does the author quote the line from Shakespeare’s play?A.To emphasize the great wisdom of Shakespeare.B.To highlight the beauty of Shakespeare’s language.C.To challenge the conventional belief regarding adversity.D.To show the long-standing recognition of adversity’s value.52.What is conveyed through Mary Pickford’s story?A.Fame can block one’s achievements.B.Strong determination overcomes adversity.C.Accepting adversity results in positive outcomes.D.Courage in the face of challenges leads to success.53.What is the idea behind Krumboltz’s happenstance theory?A.Embracing uncertainty.B.Managing life’s challenges.C.Seizing hidden opportunities.D.Focusing on personal growth.54.What is the author’s attitude towards adversity?A.Cautious.B.Favorable.C.Neutral.D.Doubtful. 55.What does the passage mainly talk about?A.Finding value and opportunity in facing adversity.B.Stress as the primary cause of growth and innovation.C.How to avoid adversity and negative experiences in life.D.Historical figures who failed to overcome adversity effectively.阅读下面短文,并根据题目要求用英语回答问题(请注意问题后的字数要求)。

Chinese female translator Zhang Jing became an online hit in China for remaining unflustered(从容不迫的), graceful, and accurate. One video of the first session of the diplomatic talks shows how Yang Jiechi starts his response to the American side at 8.30 minutes, going on until the 24.36-minute mark. Next to him, interpreter Zhang Jing is fiercely taking notes. When Yang finishes speaking, he glances to foreign minister Wang Yi on his right to let him speak, after which Zhang says, “Shall I first translate?” While the U.S. side was awaiting the translation, Yang then says: “Ok, you translate,” adding in English: “It’s a test for the interpreter,” after which the American side says “We’re gonna give the translator a raise!” Zhang then goes ahead and calmly translates Yang’s entire 15-minute speech. To give a speedy translation of such a lengthy off-the-record speech is seen as a sign of Zhang’s utmost professionalism as an interpreter, which many on Weibo praise. “She’s my idol,” multiple people write. On Sunday, the hashtag “China-U.S. Talks Female Interpreter Zhang Jing” had reached 200 million views, but it is not the first time for Zhang, who was previously called “the most beautiful interpreter” of the National Congress in 2013.Being an interpreter is generally regarded an exciting and attractive job by many netizens, as the career involves much traveling and international contacts. But the ability to master another language than Chinese is also often admired.“Translators are usually the ‘heroes behind the scenes’, “one commenter writes, pointing out how rare it is for an interpreter to hit the limelight (聚光灯) like this.“There are still people saying it’s not important to learn English,” another Weibo user writes: “But if that were true, how could we educate brilliant interpreters like her? How else could we quarrel with Americans at the conference table?!”Many who write about Zhang on Weibo say that she is an example or a role model to them: “I hope that my spoken English one day would be as excellent as hers. Cow-free meat has been around for quite some time and the popularity of brands like Beyond Meat and cultivated meat from Aleph Farms and others are soaring. While there are a large number of plant-based milk substitutes, none of them have the same taste of cow’s milk. Now, an Israeli food-tech startup Remilk created real dairy products without harming a single cow or the planet. The company stresses that their product Remilk is not a milk substitute but rather is the realdeal. Made from a special process called microbial fermentation (微生物发酵), milk is manufactured in a lab instead of in a cow. And the end product is very healthy. “In a very simple way, we take the gene that encodes for the milk protein,” said Aviv Wolff, CEO of Remilk.”The gene functions as an instruction book for the production of the protein it encodes. And so, we insert the gene into a microbe that we’ve developed and it instructs our microbe to produce the specific protein in a very efficient way.”The company says that the lab-produced milk tastes identical to the real thing and they hope to eventually replace cows by creating every dairy product sold. They expect to roll out plant-based cheese and yogurt in addition to milk. “Remilk was founded with the mission to stop using animals to produce our food because, as dairy lovers, we realize that giving up on milk is not an option,” Wolff said. “But today’s milk comes with an unreasonable price tag. The dairy industry is destructive to our planet, our health, and our animals, and is simply not sustainable anymore.”The environmental price tag of dairy farming is way too high. According to the World Wildlife Fund, dairy cows add a huge amount of greenhouse gasses to the atmosphere and contribute to global warming and climate change as well as foul the air around them. Dairy operations consume large amounts of water and run-off of manure (粪肥) and fertilizers from these farms get into local waterways. The production of Remilk uses only 5 percent of the resources and produces only 1 percent of the waste of producing cow’s milk according to the company. And they accomplish this by being 100 percent cruelty-free unlike dairy farms. 46.What distinguishes Remilk from other milk substitutes?A.It enjoys broad popularity.B.It has the highest output.C.It comes in various flavours.D.It tastes the same as cow’s milk.47.What is paragraph 2 mainly about?A.The production of Remilk.B.The nutritional value of Remilk.C.The role of gene in making protein.D.The process of microbial fermentation.48.What can we know from Wolff’s words in paragraph 3?A.Remilk was set up for animal protection.B.Dairy industries should be shut down.C.Remilk aims to produce animal-free food.D.Prices of cow’s milk are soaring these days.49.What does the underlined word “foul” probably mean in the last paragraph?A.Clean.B.Heat.C.Pollute.D.Consume.50.What can we infer from the passage?A.Drawing on gene technology, Remilk has developed a variety of dairy products.B.Conventional dairy industry is anything but eco-friendly.C.The new technology adopted by Remilk transforms the gene of cows.D.It’ll be some time before the public get accustomed to the milk substitutes.“Girls are weak, and boys are strong. This is what is being subconsciously communicated to hundreds of millions of young boys and girls all over the world, just like it was with me,” said American actor Justin Baldoni. As a boy, all he wanted was to be accepted by other people. That acceptance meant he had to pretend to be strong when he was weak, confident when he felt insecure, and tough when he was actually hurting. Is that a healthy lifestyle? A member of the CPPCC Standing Committee might say “yes”. In his proposal, he spoke of a need to “prevent the feminization of male youths”. In response to his call, China’s Ministry of Education has recently demanded that schools should hire more physical education teachers and improve teaching methods to cultivate masculinity in students. The response has been widely debated online, with many people saying that it reinforces gender stereotypes. The state broadcaster CCTV wrote on its Weibo account, “Education is not simply about cultivating men and women. It’s more important to develop a willingness to take responsibility.” You might be wondering now: What is masculinity, and why is this so controversial?Well, by itself, “masculinity” refers to the qualities traditionally considered to be typical of men. While there is not really a single “correct” set of qualities, the term is often associated withstrength, courage, assertiveness, and emotional control. Sometimes, however, these seemingly admirable qualities can be extended in unrealistic ways. But boys are also human. Blindly asking them to control their feelings “like a man” can only increase their stress when they grow up.As an educator who has spent years teaching in China, I agree that attaching more importance to physical education would definitely benefit students. Sports provide opportunities for physical fitness. More importantly, they can help develop lifelong skills, such as leadership and communication skills. However, putting the emphasis on masculinity is far from a sound reason for which to do so.It is unnecessary for all boys to build up their muscles, but it is essential that they all learn how to be strong inside. It is also fine for boys to cry and to show their weakness. Schools should work on equipping students with the skills and values they will need to be successful in life, not reinforcing stereotypes of masculinity borrowed from a bygone age.51.Why did young Justin Baldoni think it necessary to pretend to be what he was actually not?A.He was trying to be strong and confident.B.He wanted to be accepted as a real man.C.It was necessary for an actor to be strong and tough.D.He felt it secure and safe to do so.52.The underlined expression “masculinity” in Paragraph 2 most probably means “__________”A.manly qualities B.potential abilitiesC.self-centredness D.steady strength53.What is the argument against the demand of China’s Ministry of Education?A.It is necessary to prevent the feminization of male youths.B.Physical education should be paid more attention to.C.We should teach students according to their individual qualities.D.Importance should be attached to developing students’ sense of responsibility. 54.What can we learn from the passage?A.Masculinity is out of date.B.Masculinity is overstated.C.Masculinity shows physical strength.D.Masculinity only focuses on physical fitness.55.What does the author want to say in the article?A.We should do everything we can to guarantee students’ health.B.Schools should differentiate between boys and girls while educating them.C.It is important to prepare students with necessary skills and right values.D.It is time to weaken stereotypes of masculinity.阅读下面短文,按照要求用英语回答问题。

As for me, I shared none of their canine just, because I have no time to take care of a dog. “But we’ll do it.” “Really? You’re going to walk the dog? Feed the dog? Bathe the dog?” “Yes, we promise.”They didn’t. From day two (everyone wanted to walk the cute puppy that first day), neither thought to walk the dog. While I was slow to accept that I would be the one to keep track of her shots, to schedule her vet appointments, to feed and clean her, Misty knew this one day one.Quickly, we developed something of a Vulcan mind meld (心灵融合). She’d look at me with those sad brown eyes, beam her need, and then wait, trusting I would understand, which, strangely. I almost always did. She kept me company, snoring on my home-office couch as I worked, cradling against my feet as I read, and splaying across my stomach as I watched televisionEven so, I’d balk (畏缩,犹豫) silently as she and I walked. Not fair. One day my husband’s doctor uttered an unthinkable word: leukemic (白血病). I spent eight to ten hours a day with Joe in the hospital, doing anything and everything I could to ease his discomfort. Every part of my life changed; no part of my old routine remained.Save one: Misty still needed walking. At the beginning, when friends offered to take her through her paces, I declined because I knew they had their own households to deal with. As the months went by, I began to realize that I actually wanted to walk Misty. The morning walk before I headed to the hospital was a quiet, peaceful time to gather my thoughts before the day’s medical drama unfolded. The evening walk was a time to shake off the day’s upsets and let the worry tracks in my head go to white noise. After Joe died, Misty slept on his pillow.I’m grateful to a point. After years of balking. I’ve come to enjoy my walls with Misty. As I watch her chase a squirrel, throwing her whole being into the here-and-now of an exercise that has never once ended in victory, she reminded me, too, that no matter how harsh the present or unpredictable the future, there’s almost always some measure of joy to be extracted from the moment.41. Why did the writer continue to walk Misty while Joe was in hospital?A.Because the walk provided her with spiritual comfort.B.Because her friends didn’t offer any help.C.Because she could u nfold the day’s medical drama.D.Because she didn’t want Misty to be others’ companion45. What message does the author want to convey in the passage?A.One should learn to enjoy hard times.B.A disaster can change everything in life.C.Confronted with difficulty, we still have moments to enjoy.D.People will change their attitude toward you when you are in difficulty. One of the curious things about social networks is the way that some messages, pictures, or ideas can spread like wildfire while others that seem just as catchy or interesting barely register at allBefore you go deep into the puzzle, consider this: If you measure the height of your male friends, for example, the average is about 170 cm. You are 172 and your friends are all about the same height as you are. Indeed, the mathematical concept of “average” is a good way to capture the nature of this data set.But imagine that one of your friends was much taller than you. This person would dramatically skew the average, which would make your friends taller than you, on average. In this case, the “average” is a poor way to capture this data set.Exactly this situation occurs on social networks. On average, your coauthors will be cited more often than you, and the people you follow will post more frequently than you and so on.Now Lerman from University of Southern Caledonia has discovered a related paradox, which they call the majority illusion (多数错觉). They illustrate this illusion with an example. They take 14 nodes linked up to form a small network. They then color three of these nodes and count how many of the remaining nodes link to them in a single step.In situation (a), the uncolored nodes see more than half of their neighbors as colored. This is the majority illusion—the local impression that a specific feature is common when the global truth is entirely different. While in situation (b) the majority illusion doesn’t occur. So how popular is it in the real world? It’s found out that the majority illusion occurs in almost all network s cenarios. “The effect is largest in the political blogs network, where 60% of nodes will have majority active neigbbours, even when only 20% of the nodes are truly active,” says Lerman. It immediately explains many interesting phenomena. For a start, it shows how some content can spread globally while other similar content does not—the key is to start with a small number of well-connected early adopters fooling the rest of the network into thinking it is common. The affected nodes then find it natural to follow the trend. A real spread finally comes into being. But it is not yet a marketer’s charter. For that, marketers must first identify the popular nodes that can create the majority illusion for the merger audience. These influencers must then be persuaded to adopt the desired behavior or product, which is essential to the prospect of the marketing plan.46. The phrase “skew the average” in the 3rd paragraph most probably refers to the action of__________.A.hiding the real average to be unrecognizable to othersB.producing an average against the general feature of dataC.working out the common feature suggested by the averageD.ignoring the average because of the frequency by which it is reviewed47. What does the difference between situation(a) and situation(b) lie in?A.The number of the nodes in the networkB.The manner of the connection between the nodes.C.The decision of which nodes to be colored.D.The influence of the network on the nodes.48. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?A.Majority illusion rarely bas impacts except in political blogs field.B.The majority illusion on social networks relies on it that people you follow post more than youC.The essence of successful opinion spread is to initiate the trend with well-connectedsharers.D.The spread scale of ideas on networks mainly depends on the quality of content.49. To guarantee the success of marketing promotion, it’s vital to __________.A.thoroughly understand the concept of majority illusionB.accurately figure out who is the powerful person to affect othersC.definitely decide who are the target audience for the promotionD.successfully convince the influencers to practice certain action50. What is most probably the title of the passage?A.The social network vision that tricks your mind.B.Who is stealing your network identity?C.Minority network opinion spread, curse or blessing?D.Have you been misled during the last political voting?Let’s take a moment to consider the words of one of America’s most remarkable philosophers, Henry David Thoreau.Thoreau spent the years 1845-1847 living on the outskirts of society in a small cabin in the woods by the side of Waldon Pond. He called this period of his life an experiment of intentional living and wrote this famous paragraph:I went to the woods because I wished to live intentionally, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived. I wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow(精华)of life. There is great wisdom in Thoreau’s purpose here, and I think it’s very useful to ask ourselves this question:What would our lives be like if we sucked all the marrow out of life?If Thoreau’s quote sounds familiar, it may be from watching the film Dead Poets Society, a movie with deep wisdom. The film is about young men at a boarding school as they prepare to do good in the world because they have the privilege to bring about change. Their English teacher, played by Robin Williams, tries to convince them that they should live life well now instead of believing that they will find happiness after they reach certain goals. Part of his argument is conveyed by quoting this famous passage from Thoreau.Sucking the marrow out of life sounds simple enough, but as a matter of fact, it may be the most difficult thing that we can ever do. But it actually is as simple as it. Sounds—though “simple” is not quite the same thing as “easy”. I can think of one barrier that often keeps us from living our best lives. What keeps us from getting the most out of life is our desire for approval and fame. In the process of always looking for fame and glory, there is the danger that we will stop living. In order to seek approval from others, we fail to find a sense of approval within our own spirit. When we become aware that we are missing so much out of life, we can decide that we want to make changes. Our best move is to start small. If we are having a meal, whether a great festival feast or a modest supper, it is always within our power to take it slowly and really feel, taste, and enjoy the food before us. Few of us can easily do like Henry David Thoreau and get away from it all in the wilderness. But we can make small changes every single day.51. What wisdom is conveyed in Thoreau’s words?A.Stay away from city life. B.Live one’s life to the fullest.C.Only nature can bring happiness. D.One can never be too old to learn.52. Why did the author mention the film Dead Poets Society?A.To recommend a good film. B.To praise the teacher’s wisdom.C.To further illustrate Thoreau’s wisdom.D.To state the film was adapted fromThoreau’s works.53. What’s the author’s attitude towards people’s seeking for approval?A.Critical. B.Supportive. C.Sympathetic. D.Unconcerned. 54. We planned to hold some interactive workshops with the residents to try to inspire memory and social engagement.I remember being nervous, aware that we were working with people who were vulnerable, and that I had no idea what I was doing. Some residents were almost nonverbal, some were clearly not with ability. Some were happy to see us, and some were not.I had decided to play music at the end of the session. We went with the song My Way because the residents, all roughly 80 years old, were probably listening to the hit song in their late 20s.Once I pressed play, it was as if a spell had been cast. Nearly everyone in the room stood up and sang what seemed like every word. I was so profoundly moved. Many of them were communicating much better. It looked and felt like magic.Off I went to drama school, but I thought about that experience almost daily. So when we were given the opportunity to write a script for a theater festival, I created a love story about music and dementia (痴呆), spanning 50 years of a couple’s life. And now, 10 years later, the show I made is running again in London thanks to the Music for Dementia campaign. When my grandma was diagnosed with dementia toward the end of her life, I didn’t struggle to communicate with her in the way that other people in their might have done. I felt more able to tune into what she needed and better equipped to see her underneath the disease.I now know that music-based intervention reduce the need for medication in more than 60% of people living with dementia. I don’t know what My Way would be, but I certainly think we should all strive to find our song and do our best to stay connected to the people we share it with.56. Wanting to protect them, I started building houses for ants, using little pieces of wood and leaves. I then moved on to making little cups and saucers from silver foil (箔纸) for the magical creatures. When seeing my work, my mother told me that the smaller I made things, the bigger my name would become. As the years went by, my designs became more complicated. Making sculptures isn’t actually enjoyable. I sometimes work for 16 hours a day without breaks, and it takes me up tothree months to finish a sculpture. I have to hold my breath during the sculpting process. One time, a fly landed on a Cinderella carriage sculpture I was working on. The fly’s wings blew it away, and it was lost. I was heartbroken. Another time, I accidentally breathed in a microscopic Alice from Alice in Wonderland. Alice is now in the Wonderland forever. But it did give me the chance to make an even better one the second time around. My sculptures have taken me to incredible places. In 2012, I met the queen, giving her a crown on the head of a pin. In 2013, I received my first Guinness World Record for creating the smallest sculpture by hand, a 24- carat gold motorbike that fitted inside a hair. In 2017, I beat my record with a sculpture of a human fetus (胎儿) that measured 0. 078 mm by 0. 053 mm.I was diagnosed with autism (自闭症) as an adult. In school, my teachers had pointed me out as an example of failure; now, I see my autism as a gift. It’s pushed me to be the best I can be.I hold workshops in schools for neurodiverse children, sharing my story and helping them create their own miniature figures. The microscopic world has always been my happy place. I’ve tried to make bigger sculptures, but small- is best for me. We need to appreciate the little things in life. Small things can also be mighty, too.41.What drove the author to make tiny sculpture at the beginning?A.His interest in insects.B.His desire to make a name.C.His dream of setting a record.D.His awareness of wildlife protection. 42.Which of the following can best describe the author’s sculpting process?A.Eventful and enjoyable.B.Complex and frustrating.C.Money- wasting but entertaining.D.Time- consuming but fulfilling. 43.Which is NOT the theme of the author’s sculptures?A.Houses for ants B.Little cups and saucers.C.Fairy tales.D.Historical events.44.How does the author deal with his autism now?A.He receives medical treatment.B.He takes full advantage of it.C.He regards it as the source of failure.D.He shares it and asks help from others. 45.What message does the author mainly convey through the text?A.Great art comes at a cost of loss.B.Childhood experiences sculpt a career.C.Minor things in life can carry weight.D.Hard work contributes to great achievements. For decades, scientists thought of the brain as the most valuable and consequently most closely guarded part of the body. Locked safely behind the blood-brain barrier, it was broadly free of the harm of viruses and the battles started by the immune system (免疫系统). Then, about 20 years ago, some researchers began to wonder: is the brain really so separated from the body? The answer, according to a growing body of evidence, is no.The list of brain conditions that have been associated with changes elsewhere in the body is long and growing. Changes in the makeup of the microorganisms in the digestive system have been linked to disorders such as Parkinson’s disease. There is also a theory that infection during pregnancy could lead to brain diseases in babies. The effect is two-way. There is a lengthening list of symptoms not typically viewed as disorders of the nervous system, but the brain plays a large part in them. For example, the development of a fever is influenced by a population of nerve cells that control body temperature and appetite. Evidence is mounting that cancers use nerves to grow and spread. The interconnection between the brain and body has promising implications for our ability to both understand and treat illnesses. If some brain disorders start outside the brain, then perhaps treatments for them could also reach in from outside. Treatments that take effect through the digestive system, the heart or other organs, would be much easier and less risky than those that must cross the blood-brain barrier. It also works in the opposite direction. Study shows mice have healthier hearts after receiving stimulation to a brain area involved in positive emotion and motivation. Activation of the brain reward centre — called the ventral tegmental area (VTA) — seems to cause immune changes that contribute to it. Working out how this happens could help to destroy cancers, enhance responses to vaccines and even re-evaluate physical diseases that, for centuries, have not been considered as being psychologically driven.46.What do the researchers focus on about the brain?A.Its protecting system.B.Its exposure to diseases.C.Its controlling function.D.Its connection to the body.47.How does the author support his idea in paragraph 2?A.By explaining a theory.B.By providing examples.C.By making comparisons.D.By presenting cause and effect. 48.Which best describes treatments that do not cross the blood-brain barrier?A.Cheaper.B.More specific.C.Safer.D.More direct.49.What does the study suggest in the last paragraph?A.Brain health depends on immune changes.B.Brain stimulation leads to negative emotions.C.The brain can help enhance psychological health.D.The brain may be key to treating physical diseases.Lao Zi once said, “Care about what other people think and you will always be their prisoner. ”People-pleasing, or seeking self-worth through others’ approval, is unproductive and an exhausting way to go through life. Why do we allow what others think of us to have so much power over how we feel about ourselves? If it’s true that you can’t please all people all of the time, wouldn’t it make sense to stop trying?Unfortunately, sense often isn’t driving our behavior. For social beings who desire love and belonging, wanting to be liked, and caring about the effect we have on others, is healthy and allows us to make connections. However, where we get into trouble is when our self-worth is dependent on whether we win someone’s approval or not. This need to be liked can be traced back to when we were children and were completely dependent on others to take care of us: Small children are not just learning how to walk and communicate, they are also trying to learn how the world works. We learn about who we are and what is expected of us based on interactions with others so, to a four-year-old, if Mommy or Daddy doesn’t like him or her, there is the danger that they will abandon them. We need to understand that when we desperately want someone to approve of us, it’s being driven by that little kid part of us that is still afraid of being abandoned. As you become more capable of providing yourself with the approval you seek, your need for external approval will start to disappear, leaving you stronger, more confident, and yes, happierin your life. Jmagine how much time we lose each moment we restrain our authentic selves in an effort to be liked. If we base our worth on the opinions of others, we cheat ourselves of the power to shape our experiences and embrace life not only for others but also for ourselves, because ultimately, there is no difference. So embrace the cliché (老话) and love yourself as you’ll not regret it. 50.What can we conclude from Lao Zi’s quotation?A.We should see through other people’s attempt to make a prisoner of us.B.We can never really please other people even if we try as hard as we can.C.We can never be truly free if we care about others’ opinion of us.D.We should care about other people’s view as much as they care about our own. 51.What will happen if we base our self- worth on other people’s approval?A.Our desire to be loved will be fulledB.Our Identity as social beings will be affected.C.Our life will be unfruitful and exhausting.D.Our sense of self will be sharpened and enhanced.52.What may be the reason for our need to be liked or approved of?A.Our desperate longing for interactions with others.B.Our understanding of the workings of the world.C.Our knowledge about the pain of being abandoned.D.Our early childhood fear of being abandoned.53.What can we do when we become better able to provide ourselves with the desired approval?A.Enjoy a happier life.B.Exercise self- restraint.C.Receive more external approval.D.Strengthen our power of imagination. 54.What does the author advise us to do in the last paragraph?A.Embrace life for others.B.Love ourselves as we are.C.See our experiences as our wealth.D.Base our worth on others’ opinions.阅读下面短文,请根据短文后的要求答题。
