While they were traveling, they happened to pass a lake. They stopped there and Buddha told one of his followers, “I am thirsty. Please get me some water from that lake there”.The follower walked up to the lake. When he reached it, he noticed that some people were washing clothes in the water and, right at that moment, a bullock cart started crossing the lake right at the edge of it. As a result, the water became very muddy, very dirty. The follower thought, “How can I give this muddy water to Buddha to drink?!” So he came back and told the Buddha, “The water in there is very muddy. I don’t think it is fit to drink”.So, the Buddha said, let us take a little rest here by the tree. After about half an hour, again Buddha asked the same follower to go back to the lake and get him some water to drink. The follower obediently (顺从地) went back to the lake. This time he found that the lake had absolutely clear water in it. The mud had settled down and the water above it looked fit to be had. So he collected some water in a pot and brought it to the Buddha. The Buddha looked at the water, and then he looked up at the follower and said, “See, you let the water be and the mud settled down on its own. You got clear water. It didn’t require any effort”.Our mind is also like that. When it is disturbed, just let it be. Give it a little time and it will settle down on its own. You don’t have to put in any effort to calm it down. We can judge the best decisions of our life when we stay calm.24. Why did Buddha asked his follower to collect water?A. After checking just a few winter pictures of Iceland, I realized that the country, known as the land of fire and ice, during the cold months of the year could offer me experiences I had never had before. For sure you can’t miss the chance to go to Iceland in winter if your traveling wish list includes at least one of the crazy experiences Iceland can offer. Iceland in the North Atlantic Ocean is a paradise ( 乐园 ) for all those who want to see the northern lights, experience cold weather conditions and put themselves in geothermal ( 地热的 ) baths while the snow is falling on their head. The best way to move around Iceland is with a rental car. Distances are huge and public transport in winter is not really common out of the major towns. As we wanted to be even more convenient we decided to rent a small camper ( 野营车 ). Sleeping and cooking in a camper saved us a lot of driving, money and gave us the chance to be always in the right place at the right time. There were also no locals and in many cases no tourist facilities (设备). For us, as we slept in a camper, it was easier. But for tourists traveling by normal cars it is necessary to check the opening times of hotels and restaurants as many of them run just from June to September. It is amazing to experience how the weather is changing in Iceland. However, Icelanders prefer to stay inside their houses. They have even no time to complain about the weather in December. All they care about is Christmas. They love to decorate their houses, sing Christmas songs and eat typical Christmas food.28. Why is Iceland famous as the land of fire and ice?A. Because tourists would like to play with fire on the ice.B. Because it is too dry to easily cause fire to happen.C. Because there exist hot springs and freezing ice.D. Because it is hot inside a house and cold outside.29. What did the author think of the rented camper?A. It was convenient but cost them more money.B. It was not only practical but also economical.C. It provided the best chance to see the new country.D. It was much faster than other public transport.30. What does the last paragraph imply?A. The joy of Christmas drives the freezing weather away.B. The Icelanders prefer to live with their family.C. December is the coldest month of the year.D. The Icelanders are always positive and stay outside.31.What does this passage most probably come from?A. A textbookB. A scientific reportC. A news reportD. A travel magazineDA research has shown that nearly 90 percent of traffic accidents are caused by human errors. So our aim is a fully autonomous car that gets rid of the cause of most accidents: the driver. Researcher Hod gson points out, “For safety, the faster you can remove humans, the better, even if there are unfortunately a few accidents from new causes. It s a question of balancing the number injured or killed by autonomous vehicles with the people whose lives are po tentially saved.”It’s an idea that Elon Musk, chief executive of electric car company Tesla Motors, has long believed. His company are determined to be the first to deliver a fully autonomous vehicle to consumers. Last year, Musk announced that Tesla’s 2017 goal was “to do an example drive of full autonomy all the way from LA to New York…and have the car park itself.”However, even Tesla admits that there are problems to overcome—the software needs further validation andthe appropriate regulatory approval needs to be in place. Indeed, recent crashes of Tesla vehicles and Google cars confirm that the software isn’t ready yet.The UK government appears committed to encouraging the development of autonomous vehicles. It’s supporting four city trials, publishing the Modem Transport Bill to reduce red tape around their introduction and adapting the legal system to take into account problems such as insurance liability when a human isn’t in control of a vehicle. The insurance industry is similarly eager to help increase autonomy in cars. As the Association of British Insurers (ABI) points out, “More than 90 percent of road accidents are caused by human error.” This costs motor insurers a shocking £20m per day in claims.32. What difficulty does the company Tesla Motors have?A. New inventions may cause more injuries and deaths.B. The company lacks confidence to make new creations.C. The software should be made officially acceptable.D. The traffic regulation has proved unreasonable.33. What is the UK government’s attitude to autonomous cars?A. Ambiguous.B. Positive.C. Cautious.D. Cutlip couldn‟t help the man --- the tattoo was too close to the eyes. But it got him thinking. Many young pe ople get tattoos that they come to regret. A few, like the man‟s , may have to stay with them for the rest of their days. Cutlip said,“If I can help, that‟ s my goal.”Cutlip decided he would help by hiding tattoos for free. He wrote on Facebook,” “Sometimes people make bad choices and sometimes people change. We believe there is enough hate in this world, and we want to make a difference.”One man, Casey Schaeffer, showed up with two bad words on his arms. He‟d served a year in prison for fighting and got to know a group there. “Because they took care of me,I thought of it as paying them back,” Casey said. But employers would take one look at the tattoos and turn him down. So he had Cutlip cover up one of the words with a heart and tattoo a horse over the other.Cutlip has done nine such jobs, each of which took several hours. A man let him know that he quickly found a job once his tattoo was hidden. Such victories encouraged Cutlip to found the Acts of Tattoo project with three like-minded tattoo studios from around the country, and now hundreds of people are on the waiting list. While it was the first time a “pictograph(象形文字)” had been selected as a “word”, they believed this emojis came with an important message.“There were other strong competitors ,but the laugh/cry emoji was chosen as the …word‟ that best showed the mood(心情) of 2015.”t he company wrote. Although the journey took less than five minutes, it seemed like hours.I didn‟t know what if no one liked me or what if I did something wrong . On theway to the Johnson Hall for our first year group gathering ,I became nervous about meeting the rest of my class but I was excited as well .The first day seemed to go in an instant; I made lots of new friends and the activities we did in groups made it easier for us to know each other. The teachers seemed to be friendly and helpful. I hoped tomorrow would be as successful as today. That week I experienced so much: lots of different lessons in small groups, lectures delivered by well-known professors, exciting sport games, etc.In the following weeks, our class had a lot of things going on: we made a beach trip and held a sandcastle-building competition there. The competition was a bit terrible as we forgot to bring buckets and spades (铁锹) to build our sandcastle. We all enjoyed it, though. However, we made a great victory in the singing contest later in that same week. Now I can say that I enjoyed my time so much in Millfield Senior School, It offered so muchacademically as well as in other fields. The timetable was an improvement which allowed me to focus more on my favorite subjects. The extracurricular(课外的)activities were also wonderful. The highlight for me had been making the A team in hockey(曲棍球)。

绝密★启用前浙江省东阳中学2018-2019学年高二12月月考(含听力)英语试题一、阅读理解DParents who help their children with homework may actually be bringing down their school grades. Other forms of prenatal involvement, including volunteering at school and observing a child's class, also fail to help, according to the most recent study on the topic. The findings challenge a key principle of modern parenting(养育子女) where schools except them to act as partners in their children's education. Previous generations concentrated on getting children to school on time, fed, dressed and ready to learn.Kaith Robinson, the author of the study, said, "I really don't know if the public is ready for this but there are some ways parents can be involved in their kids' education that leads to declines in their academic performance. One of the things that was consistently negative was parents' help with homework." Robinson suggested that may be because parents themselves struggle to understand the task." They may either not remember the material their kids are studying now, or in some cases never learnt it themselves, but they're still offering advice." Robinson assessed parental involvement performance and found one of the most damaging things a parent could do was to punish their children for poor marks. In general, about 20% of parental involvement was positive, about 45% negative and the rest statistically insignificant.Common sense suggests it was a good thing for parents to get involved because "children with good academic success do have involved parents ", admitted Robinson. But he argued that this did not prove parental involvement was the root cause of that success." A big surprise was that Asian-American parents whose kids are doing so well in school hardly involved. They took a more reasonable approach, conveying to their children how success at school could improve their lives."1.The underlined expression "parental involvement " in Paragraph 1 probably means . A.parents' expectation on children's healthB.parents' participation in children's educationC.parents' control over children's lifeD.parents' plan for children's future2.What is the major finding of Robinson's study ?A.Modern parents raise children in a more scientific way.B.Punishing kids for bad marks is mentally damaging.C.Parental involvement is not so beneficial as expected.D.Parents are not able to help with children’s homework.3.The example of Asian-American parents implies that parents should .A.help children realize the importance of schoolingB.set a specific life goal for their childrenC.spend more time improving their own livesD.take a more active part in school management【答案】1.B2.C3.A【解析】试题分析:文章介绍和很多人预期不同的是父母过度地参与孩子的教育未必有好的效果。

AV olunteering to help people in need combined with traveling to faraway places is a new trend in the travel industry. It is called voluntourism. People travel to other countries, learn languages and other cultures, and gain new experiences. On the other side, they volunteer to help others who are not as well off as they are.Recent statistics show that in the past few years voluntourism has been one of the fastest-growing areas of tourism. More than 1. 6 million people around the world are volunteers in other countries. They work in orphanages (孤儿院) , help build schools, assist in hospitals and do farming work in developing countries. Some of them develop lasting bonds with people far away. There are many reasons why people want to take part in voluntourism. Students see it as a period of time when they can take a break before going to university; others simply want to take time out from a job and do something else. Then there are those who are bored and merely seek adventure. However, many voluntourists do not see volunteering as what it is. They think it is a cheap way of traveling and don’t really want to get involv ed in hard work. Not everyone sees voluntourism in a positive way. Critics say that if people really want to help those in need there are many opportunities in their own community to do this. On the other side, volunteers are often not skilled enough for the tasks they do.Travel experts point out that in some cases voluntourists are taken advantage of by the organization that sets up the trips.21. Reasons why not all people adopt a positive attitude to voluntourism.D. Problems caused by volunteers who lack necessary skills for their tasks.BAt the age of twenty-two, I was employed by one of the largest commercial companies in the world, so my work mainly focused on advertising, working on production teams for hundreds of television commercials. I was fortunate to experience such an amazing career at such a young age, working all over the country with some of the most creative people in the world. I had it all.And then one day a sudden thought came through me like a lightning bolt. “This is an industry that uses anorexic (厌食的)models to sell diet food to teenage girls.” My life changed. And I quit.A twelve-year career.Right then. That night I went home and was weak in my knees. I did not want to be part of the members causing this problem; I wanted to be part of the people who had solutions. But I had no idea what the solution looked like. My grandfather used to say, “Start with what you know, and more will be revealed”.I knew the film, television and advertising industries and almost everything about them.So I started going into junior high schools. I held up pictures of the models to show what they looked like at five o’c lock in the morning, and then held up some pictures showing what they looked like after three hours of professional makeup, thirty-five lighting technicians, and professional photographers who can make anyone look beautiful and sexy...not to mention the efforts of post-production, where they airbrush nearly all of the imperfection parts right out of the picture. With digital technology, they can even stretch the models to make them appear taller and thinner.I talked to young girls and said, “This is a mult i-billion dollar industry that spends millions of dollars a year proving to you that there is something wrong with you so that they can sell you something to fix it. So I am here to tell you that your teeth are white enough... and your breath is fresh enough... and your thighs are thin enough. You are enough.”You are enough, no matter what others say and what happens.24. Why did the author quit working in the commercial company?A. He was fed up with his work in advertising industry.B. He realized his work was misleading teenage girls.C. He found it hard to work with the team.D. He decided to take up a career in education.25. The author showed two sets of pictures of models to young girls to __________.A. show the magic power of make-up skillsB. stress the great efforts models made in their workC. advocate developing digital technologyD. expose the real truth behind the amazing beauty of models26. What message does the writer mainly want to pass to teenage girls?A. You might as well change your life when an opportunity arises.B. You can’t be too cautious when facing life choices.C. It is who you are rather than what you look like that counts.D. It is worthwhile to experience something interesting and creative.CTo most of us, medicine comes from a drugstore. But originally, much of the medicine developed in the last century came from natural sources: plants or bacteria. Now, a group of scientists in Great Britain are hoping to develop a medicine from poisonous insects. They are researching whether the deadly venom(毒液)of some insects can work against bacteria.Venom tech laboratoryAbout 400 insects live in plastic containers in the Venomtech laboratory. Each container has an image of a skull and crossbones. The images warn that a bite from the insects inside can be anything from painful to deadly. The venom from these insects contains hundreds of chemical components. Each component has a different target and effect. Medical researchers separate the venom into its component parts. Then they create a library of those components, looking for the ones that could be turned into new drugs.“Some of them we found can kill bacteria, like E Coli, so they’re very relevant at the moment where modernmedicines are failing. And we’re also finding venom that is changing and killing cancer cells.”Finding new ways to kill bacteria is important to researchers. One reason is that people have used antibiotics (抗生素)so much that some bacteria can now resist it. For example, tuberculosis used to be curable with antibiotics. Now it is not.How do they get the venom out? To get as much venom as possible, researchers feed the insects well and then put them to sleep temporarily. Steven Trim of Venomtech says researchers anaesthetize the insects to make removing the venom safer. After all, an immobile insect cannot bite. Researchers then electrically stimulate the insect to contract(收缩)the muscle and squeeze the gland(腺). The pressure produces a small amount of venom.Researchers separate the venom into hundreds of proteins. Each protein contains between one and five different molecules (分子). Someday, those tiny molecules might be turned into powerful new drugs.27. The skull and crossbones images in plastic containers are used to____________.A. warn peopleB. comfort peopleC. frighten peopleD. encourage people28. What does the underlined word “anaesthetize” probably mean?A. To kill something dangerous.B. To remove something harmful.C. To protect something beneficial.D. To make something unconscious.29. What can we learn from the research?A. Tuberculosis is curable with antibiotics.B. The venom from the insects can cure cancer diseases.C. Some of the components from venom can kill bacteria.D. The chemical components from venom can be turned into new drugs.30. The researchers get venom from poisonous insects by ____________.A. making them sleep for some timeB. squeezing the gland containing antibioticsC. separating the venom into proteinsD. stimulating the insects to relax the muscle第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。
