Little Women is a novel published in 1868 and written by American author Louisa May Alcott. The story concerns the lives and loves of four sisters growing up during the American Civil War. It was based on Alcott's own experiences as a child in Concord, Massachusetts with her three sisters, Anna, May, and Elizabeth.Little Women is the story of The Marches, a family used to hard toil and suffering. Although Father March is away with the Union armies, the sisters Meg, Jo, Amy and Beth keep in high spirits with their mother, affectionately named Marmee. Their friendly gift of a Christmas holiday breakfast to a neighbouring family is an act of generosity rewarded with wealthy Mr. Laurence's gift of a surprise Christmas feast. However, despite their efforts to be good, the girls show faults: the pretty Meg becomes discontented with the children she teaches; boyish Jo loses her temper regularly; while the golden-haired schoolgirl Amy is inclined towards affectation. However, Beth, who keeps the house is always kind and gentle. After certain happy times winning over the Laurences, dark times arrive as Marmee finds out about her husband's illness. Worse is to come as Beth contracts scarlet fever in her Samaritan efforts for a sick neighbour and becomes more or less an invalid. The novel tellsof their progress into young womanhood with the additional strains of romance, Beth's terminal illness, the pressures of marriage and the outside world. This is the story of their growing maturity and wisdom and the search for the contentedness of family life. It was written in 1867 and is a fictionalised biography of Alcott and her sisters. It has become a much loved classic tale and, while some of its issues seem outdated, many of the trials of the sisters are all too relevant today as evidenced by its continued following.
Before I read this book, I had watched a cartoon movie made by Japan. So I have a strong interest on it. It all begins in the dead of winter; The Christmas Season. The coldest one of all, were the war has made fuel for heating very scarce. While her husband is off at war, Marmee is left alone to raise their four daughters: Jo, Meg, Beth, and Amy. On Christmas Eve, Marmee has just arrived home from passing out food to the less fortunate with a letter from her husband, the girls' father. The all gather together around the fire to read the letter. Afterwards, the girls are teary eyed. Marmee kisses them and they are off to bed. Jo is longing to become a writer. So, every night she stays up late writing the script for soap operas. As morning comes she is the last one awake. The table is set, and food prepared for their Christmas feast. As dusk falls, the girls are all up in the attic acting out Jo's play, which she reads from the local (fake) newspaper. As they are performing, their rich, next-door neighbors grandson watches from the window. The 2 oldest girls: Jo and Meg, get ready to attend the Christmas Ball. While Jo is curling Meg's hair, there is a strange smell to the air.Amy screams, Megs hair is being singed. They continue digging through the old clothes bin for a pair of white gloves. One of the prominent themes in Little Women is the coming of age or maturation of the girls. During the course of the novel we see them grow in many ways -- physically, intellectually, andespecially emotionally. One question which readers must ask themselves is whether the views the characters have on the coming of age process are shared by Alcott. If they aren't, what are Alcott's views and how do they differ from those of the women in her story? It is interesting to examine the last half of Chapter 20, "Confidential." Jo addresses the maturation issue as she speaks with Marmee of the situation between Meg and Mr. Brooke. The possible love between these two represents one of the very important aspects in coming of age for a teenage girl. Jo treats this natural process as if it were some sort of disease, however. Jo cannot understand why Meg would want to stop behaving "like a sensible creature" (p.202), and refers to love as "such nonsense." This book tell me how to deal with the family affairs. We should know the love between the members.《小妇人》读后感【中文版】如果你是一个向往浪漫爱情的姑娘,如果你是一个向往无拘无束生活的姑娘,如果你是个恬静默默无闻的姑娘,如果你是个坚强勇敢的姑娘,那你一定不会错过露意莎·梅·奥尔柯特笔下的《小妇人》,因为在这里你会看到你的身影,看到人性的美好,看到善良乐观……

During the summer vacation, I read many books, and the book "Secret Garden" impressed me deeply. The author of "Secret Garden" is Burnett, this book is written: a little girl named Mary was given by her mother to a nanny since childhood, and both the servant and the nanny treated her well, so Mary was very tempered since childhood. Irritability is also the reason. Few people are willing to make friends with her.One day, there was a cholera outbreak where Mary lived. Everyone except her had got cholera and died. Later, when the rescuers arrived, they were all stunned. After everyones discussion, they planned to give it to her uncle in Yorkshire. After a long journey, she finally arrived at her uncles Misesweth Manor. She met a servant named Martha at Mitherthwaite Manor. Before she knew Martha, she just asked the servant to wear shoes and clothes for her. But she knew everything after knowing Martha. After she also met Deacon, cousin Colin, robin and gardener Ben Witherstaff. Marys cousin is ill all year round, and her cousin is as grumpy as Mary, but when Mary comes to Mitherswett Estate, Mary and her cousins temper becomes gentle. After Mary knew the robin, the robin led Mary to find the keys of the "secret garden" and "secret garden" that had been blocked for ten years, and then they began to work in the garden. After their hard work, they were about to "die" "The lost garden survived again. This book tells us not to give up hope in life, but to strive to create a vibrant life path, the key lies in happiness, happiness is the foundation of life. As Burnett said: If there is a garden, there is a future, and if there is a future, it will still be alive!
After reading this novel, I feel sympathy for Emma. I would rather call her Emma than Madame Bovary because I think whenever a woman should appear as an independent person, not a wife belonging to any man, especially at that time in France, a relatively stable mediocre era.Emma had a basic instinct like all the people:unsatisfied with what she had and pursuing what she wanted. There is nothing wrong with her idea like this. Even in today’s society, it will be regarded as a positive attitude. If Emma could balance her dream and family, maybe she could be a successful woman, for example, a romanticist. However, she couldn’t. In fact she was wrong in her childhood: at the age of thirteen, she was wrongly sent to receive aristocratic education, which was not suitable for her as a farmer’s daughter. The wrong education left erosion in her heart. From then on, her life drifted?awayfrom?the?actual world. Her dream was too far away from her real life. The impractical dream formed her wrong character and the wrong character decided her sad life. So she was bound to be a tragedy. It’s hard to say that Emma didn’t understand love. In my opinion, she was a person who held on to love, unluckily, in a wrong way. After Emma married Mr. Bovary, she had twoaffairs. It was condemned as immoral at that time and many people regard her as a dissolute woman. However,I noticethat when Emma was driven into the corner, she asked Guillaumin, the notary, for help. Guillaumin promised her on condition that he could own her. However, Emma refused him confirmedly:“I am to be pitied, not to be bought.” She cherished the love with her lover and once she was in love, she would never look at any other man. From this aspect, I think she was not of loose moral. She fell in love with another man and each time she regarded it as true love. She devoted herself into it, willing to give up everything forthe so-called love. I think there is nothing wrong with love itself. The?irony?is?that she showed her loyalty to her lover, not her husband, moreover, she was unlucky to have fake love. She was cheated. In fact, she also was a victim.Although I sympathize with Emma, it doesn’t mean that she didn’t do anything wrong. At least, as a wife, she was disloyal to her husband; as a mother, she was not responsible to her daughter. Even at last, she splurged on all her husband’s money. She destroyed her family with her own hands. As a matter of fact, everyone in today’s society is Emma. There is greed, lust and vanity in everyone’s heart. Emma, as a literary character, is famous around the world because she is typical for a group of people and she speaksout what others dare not say. It is hard to say she is goodor bad, she just not belongs to the society she lived in.I always think that if everything could return to its origin, if at first Emma lived as a country girl, later marrying Mr. Bovary, would she be content to act as ahousewife and live through life banally? Maybe. The only regret is that she went wrongly at first.【篇二】包法利夫人英语读后感Madame Bovary is the greatest novel written by Gustave Flaubert. The 1855masterpiece portrays in searing detail the tragic tale of a young girl whose dreams turned into nightmares; whose sandcastles are swept away by unfulfilled passion; whose young life is ended in a tragic death. Years before Tolstoy limned the adultress woman in his Anna Karenina we see the consequences which ensue when a middle class wife and mother breaks the seventh commandment. The novel takes place near Rouen in the north of France. There are actually three Madame Bovarys in the story. Madame Bovary Sr. who is the mother of Charles Bovary dominates her weak son. Madame Bovary I is an ugly but wealthy woman who dies allowing Charles to wed the lovely EmmaBovary who is the the famed woman of the books title. Emma has grown up on a farm coddled by her widower father. She has immersed herself in romantic tales and spent time in a French convent. Emma dreams of castles in the air and a charming prince to take her to paradise. Today she would be a reader of Harlequin Romances. She is a virgin plum ripe for picking!Charles Bovary ("bovine" meaning cow-like; also think "ovary for his scandolous wife Emma) is a dull, stupid and lethargic public health inspector. He is a good man but is a total dullard! Charles weds Emma after treating her father. At first all goes well as the couple set up house in a French provincial town where little exciting ever occurs. They have a daughter Berthe with whom Emma has little to do. She never grows up to becoming a mature woman.Emma carries on two affairs in the novel with the law student Leon and the wealthy but callous womanizingaristocrat Rodolphe. She is sucked into a cesspool of overwhelming debt being addicted to clothing, jewelry and furniture. Emmas lovers forsake her as her disillusionment with men and life itelf takes over life. Madame Bovary ends her life by committing suicide. The account of her horrific, painful and grotesque death from her fatal injection of arsenic rat poison will never be forgotten by thereader. Despite her many sins she deserves pity at such a sad end. Her husband dies a few years later and her daughter has to be farmed out to a relative. What makes this novel of adultery, satirical views of provincial life, mockery of the relgious hypocrisy in the French countryside and lacerating portraits of such types as the village atheist Homais so great? In my opinion the reasons this is such a landmark work must include:a. A picture of a woman seeking to break out of the nineteenth century bourgeoisie view of females as placid wives and mothers with no aspirations of their own. Throughout the novel there are images of birds seeking freedom from cages. Emma is a modern feminist in the nineteenth century society she finds impossible to escape. Emma is an iconoclastic rebel.b. A satirical and cynical view of human hypocrisy drawn with skill in the pictures Flaubert draws of such figures as the village priest, scientist, merchants and moneylenders. Society is concerned with money and social status to the detriment of more spiritual and ethical values.c. Flaubert introduces a new realism to the novel which will influence such naturalist as Emile Zola and others. The novel reads as if it was written today instead of over 150 years ago.d. Flauberts descriptions of the beauty of nature (and its indifference to human suffering and troubles) are beautifully etched. His use of language and the level of suspense he maintains throughout the work are excellent.e. Flaubert is not afraid to describe female sexual longings. His sex scenes are tasteful to our eyes but viewed as prurient reading in his own day.。

Woll and Laura unified. The Woman in White in a detective novel written by Wilkie Collins. It's said that thisnovel is one of his best novels .And the words he wanted on his gravestone is ‘author of The Woman in White and other works'.So we can see how much the author liked this work.Walter Hartright was the art teacher of Laura and Marian, who had the same mother but different fathers. For all their special relationship,Marian and Laura had a very close affection towards each other and Marian was like an angle ,who was always with Laura however difficult the situation was.Walter fell in love with Laura almost at the first sight of her,so did Laura. But the problem was that Laura had promised her father that she would marry Sir Percival before her father died, who was twenty years older than her and had a high position in the society and high reputation. Before the meeting with Percival,Laura received a warning that told her that the man she would marry actually was a very aweful person.According to the description of the gardener who sent the warning to Laura,Walter immediately realized that it is the same person he met the day before he came to Limmeridge House where the two sisters lived. She was the woman in white. She told Walter that she was the friend of Mrs Farlie, the mother of the two sisters, and loved she very much the night of their meeting.Walter didn't know that the lady that the woman in white referred to is the mother of his students .He didn't know either that from that moment his future and that of Laura's had been tied together.Though both Laura and Walter had a deep emotion towards each other,Laura didn't allow herselt to break the promise she had made to her father.Marian told everthing to Walter about her sister's promise and marriage and suggested that he leave before both of them had trapped too much.Walter left with great sorrow. And Laura married Sir Percival as arranged .But there was one thing that confused Laura's lawyer was that Percival insisted that the twenty thousand dollars which Laura's father had left Laura should go to him if Laura died before him. While Laura insisted that the money should be left to her sister. Then the loyal lawyer had to turn to Laura's uncle, who was now the master of the Limmerig House, for help. Her uncle was a very self-centered person, who only kept his health in mind and cared nothing else.So the lawyer had to agree the request of Sir Percival.Laura was very reluctant to be married with Sir Percival and her misery began since then.As the warning said, her husband treated her badly. To her relief,Marian lived with her and shared the burden and misery that she suffered from her devil husband. One day accidentally Laura met a woman who looked like her very much and was almost another Laura after an illness.Because she seemed paler and weaker than Laura .Actually she was that woman in white,Anne, the daughter of Mrs Catherick. Both the mother and the daughter knew the secret of Sir Percival, once the secret gave out ,it would destroy him completely. That's why Sir Percival was afraid of Anne very much and tried his best to make others believe that Anne had some mental problems and sent her to an asylum. So nobody would believe the words of a mad woman. It's lucky that Anne had escaped. She intended to tell Laura the secret, but before she could do that she was found by Percival's friend,Count Fosco. So she had to postpone the meeting with Laura and save herself.Sir Percival changed into another person after his marriage .He kept forcing Laura to sign on a document so that the money would be transferred into his name.Because Marian had heard his plot by accident and she warned Laura about her husband's plot,so Laura refused which made him very angry. While the bigger plot was waiting for them. After the night that Marian heard the conversation of Sir Percival and Count Fosco in the rain, she was badly ill and stayed in bed for days. From the conversation she knew the real purpose that Sir Percival married Laura was that Laura was the holder of twenty thousand dollars. He wanted to use this amount of money to pay his ura was ill too after some days of taking care of Marian. She fainted. After she woke up,she could't find her sister. And she was told that Marian had been taken by Fosco to London for improvement of her health. At first,Laura couldn't believe it because she was sure her beloved sister wouldn't leave her alone to deal with all the troubles. While indeed she couldn't find her sister so she left for London. The poor girl didn't know all of this was a swindle. After she arrived at London ,after a cup of tea that Fosco gave her ,she not only saw her sister, but knew nothing about it until she found herself in the asylum. The truth was that Marian wasn't sent to London, she was just transfered to another place in the house.Afer she recovered, the first news she heard was Laura's death from heart disease. She was very upset.Besides she was very regret of having asked Walter to leave her sister before they both trapped too much, she felt guilty of her sister's unhappiness. She returned to the Limmerige House. There her uncle showed her a letter from Fosco informing him to be careful.Fosco said that they had found Anne and sent her back to asylum again. She got worse by keeping claiming herself as Laura.Fosco just reminded her uncle not to believe any information that Laura was still alive.Marian felt very strange at such a letter. She wanted to what happened on earth. The result surprised Marian very much because the so-called Anne was actually her sister,Laura. The reason why Fosco succeeded in deceiving everybody was the similarity between Laura and Anne. And in the last few part of the novel we know that they were actually sisters. They had the same father.Marian tried her best to help Laura out of the asylum. While Laura had changed to a different person. Before marriage, she always smiled and was lovey and happy. But now you could see no change of expressions from her face. The devil husband almost destroyed her.Because of the letter that Fosco sent to Mr Farlie, their uncle refused to accept her as his neice. The servants couldn't recognise Laura either due to her so great changes. So they had to leave the place where they had spent their happiest life .Before leaving,Laura insisted to see their mother's grave. There they met Walter who just came back from the expedition to central America.Later on they figured out what happened on earth.Fosco and Percival caught Anne and because of her bad health,Anne died immediately after she was caught. The took her body as Laura's and make everybody believe that Laura had died.By doing this,Percival could get the property from Laura to pay his debts. All the plot ,troubles and tragedy were due to money. What a pity! The secret that may destroy Percival was that he committed the forgery by adding the record of his parents' marriage himself. At that time ,forgery was a very serious crime.Once discovered,he would be punished severely. After he knew that Walter had known his secret,he hurried to the church in hope of destroying the proof. In a hurry,he upset the lantern and locked himself in the fire and never came out again. What moved me very much was that at that time Walter tried to save him and forgot that he was his enemy. What was inhis mind was only that he was a human being who was caught in fire and needed help.Maybe that's why people can master the world ,not any other animals.Human beings have some unique characters which may not be found even by themselves.Once disaster comes, they will explode and produce unbelievable power. After all, the story had a happy ura and Walter got married and had a son,who became the master of Limmerig House after Mr Farlie's death.Kindness is the most treasurable character in the world,I think.Never never give up the chance of sticking to your kindness.

如,descend,ren-dezvous,respectableantecedent,increasinginfirmi-tiesofage,venerable,commence,amble,succumb,seniledecay等. Andtheirtriumphandre—joicingfoundareadyechointheheartofMrs. PackLtide;……" Press,1978.【2】Miehael,S.TheCambridgeGuidetoEnglishLiterature[I~.Britain:CambridgeUniv,Press,1983.[3ffheNewEncyclopaediaBritannica(vii)[1讧】.I98I.[4]Smith.M.S.MacmillanGuidetOModemWorldLiterature[M】.London:TheMacmillanPressLtd.,1985. What They Live for
There is a world that is supposed to be chiefly swayed by hunger and by love. However, Mrs. Packletide seemed not belong to the normal world. The dislike of Loona Bimbeton led her whole life. Not only her, but also people around Mrs. Packletide lived for vanity. They always want to stay within people’s concern. All people of their class seemed regard vanity as a great part of their lives.
Let’s start form Mrs. Packletide, the protagonist of the passage. The reason why she disliked Loona is that Loona is just a person who shared people’s attention from Packletide glory. To get the concern and keep it, Mrs. Packletide had the intention that she should shoot a tiger just to fight against the fact that Loona’s eleven miles in a aeroplane: after got the tiger, she arranged a lunch and gave Loona Bimberton the tiger-claw brooch: at last Mrs. Packletide wanted her paid, Miss Mebbin, to keep the secret of the tiger’ s death, so she paid for the lie. Obviously, she did not be chiefly swayed by anything but the peacockery.
How about Loona Bimberton? She actually got a honor in a short time. But thereon a tiger-claw brooch given by Mrs. Packletide with a forced vanish came to Loona. Facing the special brooch, how ever she was angry, Loona had to send her letter of thanks for the gift of a tiger-claw brooch that was a modle of repressed emotions because of
her own vanity.
And Clovis? He was a representation of all audiences—those people who envied Mrs. Pckletide saying fulsome complimentsand trying to find a point so that they could laugh at the heroine before a second. They were ambivalent. They were longing for vain glory despising those people who made themselves talked about.
Louisa Mebbin, a better daughter than Eugenie Grandet to old Grandet. She and the neighboring villagers are at least honest to the basic desire—money compared with others. It proved those worlds to some degrees which appeared at the beginning, “In a world that is supposed to be chiefly swayed by hunger and by love.” They were like real human more than others.
From what I have said above, the author created a world that there were contorted upper classes loyal to their vanity and a excessively honest lower classes to their material desire in his words. It may refract the real world of our author.。
