Twosisters, Mildred Hill, a teacher at a kindergarten, andDr. Patty Hill, the principal of the same school, wrotea song together for the children, entitled “Good Morning to All”. When Mildred combinedher musical talents with her sister’s knowledgein the area of kindergarteneducation, ‘Good Morning to All”was sure to be a success. The sister published the song in a collectionentitled “Song Stories of the Kindergarten”in 1893. Thirty-one years later, after Dr. Patty Hill became the headof the Department of KindergartenEducation at Columbia University’s Teachers College, a gentleman by the name Robert Coleman published thesong, without the sisters’permission. He added a secondpart, which is the familiar “Happy Birthday to You”.Mr. Coleman’s addition of the second part madethe song popular and, finally, the sisters”original first part disappeared. “Happy Birthday to You”had altogether replaced the sisters’originalsong “Good Morning to All”. After several years of searching, he finally found a theater that was willing to give him a try. The director said, “This is the most important part, and it has only one line. At the opening you walk onto stage carrying a rose. You hold the rose to your nose with just one finger and thumb, smell it deeply and them say the line in praise of the rose: …Ah, the sweet smell of my love.?” The actor was excited. All day long before the play he practiced his line over and over again. Finally, the time came. The curtain went up, the actor walked onto the stage, looked at the audience, and with great emotion said theline, “Ah, the sweet smell of my love.” The audience exploded in laughter. Only the director was furious! “Ahhhhhh! You damned fool!”he cried. “You?ve ruined my play! You?ve ruined me!”The actor was puzzled, “What happened? Did I forget my line?”“No!” shouted the director. “You forgot the rose!”1. D2. C3. D4. A5. BTask 3: Movie ReviewsI love movies! And after I see them, I like to comment on them. These are movies I saw this year that I would like to recommend: Among comedies I highly recommend “Monsoon Wedding”. It?s an Indian movie. The story is about an Indian wedding. Preparations for the wedding bring out funny and sad situations touching on love and a past rape. This movie shows some of the wonderful customs of India, and the importance of family and love. It?s great!Among dramas, I like “Adaptation”. It is an excellent movie! But for me the first part of the movie was too fast to follow. I hope to see it again on DVD with captions.“The Pianist” is set in the Second World War. It?s about a young Polish-Jewish pianist, who lives in Warsaw with his family. The Nazis sent his family to die in the concentration camps. He was safe, but would have died without unusually good luck and the kindness of a few non-Jews. This is a powerful movie with thought-provoking themes.“Rabbit-Proof Fence” is set in the 1930s in Australia, and it?s based on real events. It is about three native girls who are separated from their families by the racist police who send them to special centers. There the girls are taught practical skills, and the government tries to integrate them into white Australian society. They ran away from the camp and walk 1,500 miles to find their mothers. This is a sad, touching story that you should not miss.1. He likes to see movies and comment on them2. Four3. Three4. Let?s TalkAlfred HitchcockAlfred Hitchcock was a British director. His movies frequently show innocent people caught up in situations beyond their control or even understanding.Hitchcock preferred the use of suspense to surprise in his movies. In surprise, the director provides the viewer with frightening things. In suspense, the director tells or show things to the audience which the characters in the movie do not know, and then skillfully builds up tension around what will happen when the characters finally learn the truth. Hitchcock had a great sense of humor. Once at a French airport, a suspicious customs official looked at Hitchcock?s passport, which was marked simply PRODUCER. The curious official asked, “And what do you produce?”“Gooseflesh.” replied Hitchcock. Alfred Hitchcock always managed to make a brief appearance in hisw movies: He was sometimes getting on a bus, or crossing a street, or walking in front of a store, or across the courtyard in an apartment. However, for the movie Lifeboat in 1944, he was faced with a difficult problem. The entire movie was set in a lifeboat out at sea, and there were only a few characters in the boat. Originally, he wanted to float by as a dead body, but he was afraid he?d sink! His clever solution was to place a photograph of himself in a newspaper that one of the characters read during thecourse of the movie.VI. At that point it was essentially the idea for a boy who didn?t know he was a wizard.Q: Did you always plan to write Harry?s story in more than one book? If so, how many?A: I always conceived it as a seven-book series because I decided that it would take seven years, from age eleven to seventeen, inclusive, to train as a wizard, and each of the books would deal with one year of Harry?s life at the school.Q: Any clues about the next book?A: I don?t want to give anything away, but I can tell you that the books are getting darker. Harry?s going to have quite a bit to deal with as he gets older. Unit 2Outside ViewActivity 1ScriptHi guys, my name is Angel. Ah, I come from China. It’s my third year of the undergraduate study. And today I’m going to make a Chinese dish, sweet-and-sour spare ribs. It’s very tasty, very Chinese-style, and it’s really ideal for you to have a quick dinner at night when you’re busy preparing your coursework and stuff. To make this, we’ll need four pork ribs, corn starch, soy sauce, oil, Chinese rice vinegar, sesame oil and sugar, salt, lime and spring onion. The first thing to do is to marinate the pork ribs with soy sauce …just to make sure that you cover all the ribs. After you’ve done that, just to leave (just leave) it (them) for 20 minutes. So, this (these) have been marinated for 20 minutes. It’s time to fry them. Make sure your pan is really hot, pour in oil, and put them inside one by one.Just turn them around, and it takes about three to five minutes to golden brown. Let’s put them aside. So, we are going to make the sauce, it’s really easy to make …and firstly we pour in some oil.And sesame oil. So after (we) finish making the sauce, we are going to pour in the spare ribs. And last but not least, we have our Chinese secret weapon, liquid corn starch. And almost every Chinese dish eat (eaten) in Chinese restaurants use (uses) this. It will make the sauce thicker. Takes another three, four minutes. Stir constantly. And we’re good to serve.Just carefully put them in the plate. There you go. Sweet-and-sour spare ribs.Activity 2Activity 3Listening inNews ReportActivity 1ScriptThe US government has released its latest dietary guidelines. The guidelines are revised every five years and serve as the government’s official advice on what to eat. This year’s update focuses on the importance of a lifelong healthy eating pattern that contains a variety of nutritious foods like fruit and vegetables, grains, fat-free or low-fat dairy products, lean meats and other protein foods and oils. The biggest change in the guidelines involves added sugar. For the first time, they suggest limiting added sugar to less than 10 per cent of daily calories. That means no more than 12 teaspoons of sugar a day for an average adult. This does not include foods with natural sugar like fruit and vegetables.Americans are also encouraged to consume less than 2,300 milligrams of sodium per day, equal to a teaspoon of salt. This number reflects the salt already in processed foods and the salt you add to food.1. What do we learn about the dietary guidelines from the news report?2. What is the biggest change in the updated guidelines?Activity 2ScriptA study has found that skipping breakfast can increase the risk of stroke. The findings add to the growing scientific evidence that breakfast is the most important meal of the day and could help in the prevention of stroke. For the study, 82,772 Japanese men and women aged 45 to 74 years old were monitored from 1985 to 2010. Participants were asked about their daily breakfast habits. They were grouped based on how often they ate breakfast, from zero to seven times each week.During the 25-year follow-up, there were a total of 3,772 strokes and 870 cases of heart disease.Analysis showed that those who never ate breakfast had higher risks of stroke compared with those who ate breakfast every day.1. What are the findings of the study?2. What do we learn about the study from the news report?Passage 1Activity 1ScriptBen: If it’s a formal meal, maybe Thanksgiving or Christmas, or if you’re with your boss or someone like that, you are being careful about your table manners. So you’d wait until everyone is served before you eat. But most of the time, if you know each other well you would just go ahead and start. It’s more usual to entertain them at home because it shows your hospitality. We have a lot of barbecues outside, maybe in the garden or maybe at a campsite. But sometimes if you don’t want to cook, you can go to a restaurant.Oh, well, after dessert you’ll have a little talk, then talk some more, have some coffee. Then you’ll say, “Oh well, it’s time for us, we should get going.”And if you don’t, then you’re probably going to be rude and stay too late. Michelle: Well, it would be between 8 and 8.30. It is unusual that if somebody is invited for 8 they would be there at 7.30 or 7.45. Probably 8 or 8.30 would be when all the guests would arrive. It’s OK to refuse something if you don’t like it, but it might be embarrassing. For example, if I’m cooking dinner and I discover one of my guests is a vegetarian, I’ll feel a bit frustrated that I didn’t know before. But usually everyone tries everything.Tom: Well, usually the host serves the guests, so you should make sure you tell him or her not to give you too much, because yes, it’s quite important to eat everything on your plate. It doesn’t matter if you leave something, but if you leave a lot, it will look as if you don’t like their cooking. My mother always told me to put my hands on my lap under the table when I wasn’t eating, and I would be in big trouble if I ever put my elbows on the table. But actually I know that in some countries that’s considered rude. So I might rest my hands or my arms on the table, and I suppose it’s a bit more relaxed today than it used to be when I was young. No, it’s the worst thing you can do if you’re eating. Any strange noises are absolutely forbidden. I mean you can say “mmm, this is good”, but nothing more than that. And even when you drink soup or eat noodles, you have to do it in silence, otherwise it’s considered very bad manners.Activity 2Passage 2Activity 1ScriptNews-reader: The government announced today that they are going to ban advertisements for junk food during TV programmes for children under the age of 16. The rules will include any foods that are high in fat, salt and sugar. There will be a total ban on ads during children’s programmes and on children’s channels, as well as adult programmes watched by a large number of children. But there will not be a total ban on all ads for junk food which are shown on television before 9 pm. This was thought to be “over the top”by representatives of the food industry. The new rules will come into effect before the end of December this year, and mean that television channels will lose about £39 million in revenue for advertising. So why has the government introduced this ban? We asked leading food and nutrition expert, Neil Bennett.Neil: Well, we all know that over the last 30 years, what we call junk food, bad food with too much fat and salt, has become easily available and eating habits have changed. However, in recent years many of us have become aware of the importance of keeping fit and eating healthily, and this means people are not going to fast-food restaurants so often. So, the result is that the fast-food business has increased the number of ads in order to recover some of the business it’s lost.News-reader: And how do the fast-food restaurants do this?Neil: The biggest problem is that they aim their ads at young people. One well-known fast-food restaurant chain sells hamburgers which come with a free gift, usually a toy which is linked to a new children’s film. Other fast-food restaurants aim their ads at teenage and college-age men, trying to make their food trendy and, you know, kind of masculine food.News-reader: So a ban on junk food ads will stop the sales of junk food? Neil: Almost certainly not, but it might reduce the growth of the fast-food industry.News-reader: So you’re in favour of the ban?Neil: As a nutritionist, I am. As a father of two young children, I’m not sure. News-reader: Why not?Neil: Because less money from advertising will mean less money for children’s TV programmes. So we’re likely to see more cheap and violent cartoons, and fewer programmes produced specially for children.News-reader: So the choice is between junk food and junk television? Neil: Yes, that just about sums it up.News-reader: Neil Bennett, thank you.Activity 2Unit TestSection AScript1.M: How about sushi for lunch?W: Oh, yummy! Answer DCBSection CScriptHave you ever wanted to make the perfect cheese burger, but don’t know how? Well, if you follow these instructions, you will be the envy of all your friends and making delicious burgers in no time.First, you need to start with the right kind of meat, choose ground beef that doesn’t have too much fat. Form the beef into patties that aren’t too big or too small. If they are too big, they won’t cook properly. If they are too small, they’ll burn easily. Cook the meat thoroughly until there is no pink in the middle. Uncooked meat might make you sick. You will probably get the best tasting burger if you cook it over an open barbecue. Just before we moving the burger from the heat, add a slice of your favorite cheese to the top and let it melt a little. Once the burger is cooked, place it on a lightly toasted bun and then pile on the lettuce, tomatoes, pickles and onions. Finally, bite into your juicy burger and enjoy.Q9: What would the instructions be classified as?Q10: What should you do just before we moving the burger from the heat? Q11: Which of the following would be the best title for this passage? Answer ADBSection DScriptThe American seafood staple of Maine lobster, or “lobsta”as they say in Maine, is becoming very popular on Asian dining tables.Maine lobsters were a featured course at last year’s state dinner when Chinese President Xi Jinping visited the White House. Unit 2 WaterPart II LISTENING AND SPEAKINGLesson A / ListeningSCRIPTTrack 2-1In many places, tap water is both clean and safe. In fact, there are more unhealthy chemicals in bottled water. These chemicals come from the plastic. Here’s another fact: Most bottled water is the same as tap water. Both tap and bottled water come from rivers and lakes. But bottled water is more expensive. It costs almost a thousand times more than tap water. Putting water in bottles also wastes water. Water is used to clean bottles first, and this is wasteful. Of course, in some places, people need to drink bottled water. The tap water isn’t clean in those places. But this must change. Eighty percent of plastic bottles go in the trash. And this is very bad for our planet.1. tap water: 自来水2. bottled water: 瓶装水CONVERSATIONSCRIPTTrack 2-2A:How often do you drink bottled water?B:Hardly ever. I usually drink tap water. How about you?A:All the time.B:But bottled water is expensive.A:Yeah, but it tastes better.1. hardly ever: 几乎不;几乎从来不Lesson B / Listening 1SCRIPTTrack 2–3Our Hidden Water UseWe use a lot of water to make many different foods and drinks. For example, tomake just one cup of tea, 30 liters (about eight gallons) of water are needed!Farmers use most of that water for growing the tea plant. Here are some otherexamples:To get a kilogram of chocolate, farmers use 24,000 liters of water. To get a kilogram of beef, farmers use about 14,000 liters of water. To get a kilogram of rice, farmers use 3,400 liters of water. Today 21% of theworld’s water goes to growing rice.Farmers use 1,279 liters of water to make just one hamburger. To grow one apple, farmers need 70 liters of water. To make one slice of bread, 40 liters of water are needed.Lesson B / Listening 2SCRIPTTrack 2-4F:What are you doing?M:I’m writing a paper for a class. It’s about coffee.F:Oh, my favorite drink! What are you writing about?M:Well, for example, did you know that Brazil grows the most coffee in the world?F:Really? Not a country in Africa?M:Nope. The coffee plant is from Africa. But Brazil grows the most.F:So Africans were the first to drink coffee?M:No. People in Arabia were the first to drink coffee... around the year 1000.F:That’s right. I’ve heard that before.M:Yeah, and here’s something else I learned: You need a lot of water to grow coffee plants.F:Yeah, I know.M:Did you know that you need 147 liters of water to get justone cup of coffee?F:Are you serious?147liters?M:Yeah. Most of the water is used to grow the plant.F:Wow, that’s a lot of water.1.Are you serious?: 你没开玩笑吧?Listening SkillsSCRIPTTrack 2–51. Although children have little or no money of their own, they certainly have thecapacity to be “givers”. As children often need so much help — even with everydaythings, they might think that they are the only ones who should be helped. But youcan let them know that everyone in this world needs some kind of help and thatsome people need more help than others.Encourage children to be helpful is one of the best ways to help them develop acharitable attitude, andthat’s an attitude that hopefully will grow al l through their lives.2.What is self-control? Self-control is listening to your friend talk when you want himto listento you. Being quiet in the library takes self-control, especially when afriend comes in and you want to call to him. What is caring? When you help a turtle cross a path in the park so he will be safe—that’s caring. When you leave flowers to bloom so others can enjoy them too —that’s caring.3. Plato thought there are four virtues: 1) wisdom, 2) courage, 3) temperance, or self-control,and 4) justice. The most important of these is wisdom, which is knowledgeof what is truly good. People who have wisdom and, as a result, know what is trulygood, will tend to do what is right. These people will act in their own interest andbe in harmony with themselves. This harmony is the basis of all justice. People whoare just, in Plato’s view, will tend to have other virtues as well.PART III VIDEOSCRIPTNarrator:Water…It’s all around us. The water on our planet is always moving and changing. Sometimes, it’s snow…sometimes rain.Water falls from the clouds in the sky, and it goes into the ground. Then, water evaporates, and it returns to the sky. And the cycle starts again. Water is always moving from place to place on Earth. In time, water in the Ganges River in India…can be the rain or tap water in your city. Most of our planet is water…but we need a certain kind to live. Fresh water. But less than 3 percent of all the water on Earth is fresh. And most of the fresh water is snow or ice. This means we have only one percent to use for drinking, cooking, and washing.Every day, we use freshwater for many things. But we use most fresh water to grow plants … like cotton. And we use cotton to make many clothes. But cotton is a very thirsty plant. To make one cotton T-shirt, we need2,700liters of water. With that much water, a person can drink for 900 days. And when you wash your clothes, you can use 150 liters of water. Protecting our water is one of our most urgent challenges. Water is too important to waste.1. fresh water: 淡水。
