Hard by a great forest dwelt a poor wood-cutter with his wife and his two children. The boy was called Hansel and the girl Gretel. He had little to bite and to break, and once, when great dearth fell on the land, he could no longer procure even daily bread.Hansel: Now when he thought over this by night in his bed, and tossed about in his anxiety. He groaned and said to his wife, "What is to become of us? How are we to feed our poor children, when we no longer have anything even for ourselves?"Gretel: "I'll tell you what, husband," answered the woman, "early tomorrow morning we will take the children out into the forest to where it is the thickest. There we will light a fire for them, and give each of them one more piece of bread, and then we will go to our work and leave them alone. They will not find the way home again, and we shall be rid of them."Hansel: "No, wife," said the man, "I will not do that. How can I bear to leave my children alone in the forest? The wild animals would soon come and tear them to pieces."Gretel: "Oh! you fool," said she, "then we must all four die of hunger, you may as well plane the planks for our coffins," and she left him no peace until he consented.Hansel: "But I feel very sorry for the poor children, all the same," said the man.Gretel: The two children had also not been able to sleep for hunger, and had heard what their step-mother had said to their father. Gretel wept bitter tears, and said to Hansel, "Now all is over with us."Hansel: "Be quiet, Gretel," said Hansel, "do not distress yourself, I will soon find a way to help us." And when the old folks had fallen asleep, he got up, put on his little coat, opened the door below, and crept outside.F2. Jack and the BeanstalkJack is a young lad living with his widowed mother and a milk cow who is their only source of income. When the cow stops giving milk, Jack's mother has him take her to market for sale. On the way, he meets an old man who offers "magic beans" in exchange for the cow, and Jack makes the trade. When he arrives home without any money, his mother becomes furious, throws the beans to the ground, and sends Jack to bed without supper.A gigantic beanstalk grows overnight, which Jack climbs to a land high in the sky. There he comes to a house (or in some cases, a castle) that is the home of a giant. He asks at door for food and the giant's wife takes him in. When the giant returns, he senses that a human is nearby:Fee-fi-fo-fum!I smell the blood of an Englishman,Be he alive, or be he dead,I'll have his bones to grind my bread.Jack is hidden by the giant's wife and he overhears the giant counting money. When the giant sleeps, he steals a bag of gold coins and makes his escape down the beanstalk.Jack returns up the beanstalk twice more. Each time he is helped by the wife, learns of another treasure, and steals it when the giant sleeps: first a hen that lays golden eggs, then a harp that plays by itself. He is almost caught with the harp, however. The giant follows him down the beanstalk and Jack calls to his mother for an axe. Jack chops down the beanstalk, killing the giant, and they live happily ever after with their riches.F(3)Jerry: Hi Fei, how was your day?Fei: Hi Jerry, I've been looking for you. Where have you been?Jerry: I just had a very interesting experience. I spent the whole day with dozens of little children!Fei: That sounds like fun.Jerry: Yes, it was fun... but exhausting! Kids have so much energy.Fei: Where did you meet all these kids?Jerry: At the primary school down the street. I visited some of their classes in the morning, then taught them some English in the afternoon.Fei: English must be very difficult for them.Jerry: Actually, they were very eager to learn. I was quite impressed.Fei: What did you teach them?Jerry: One teacher gave me some sentences to practice. The kids love to repeat things out loud! Sometimes I shouted the sentences, and they shouted back at me. Other times I whispered, and they whispered back. They were very cute.Fei: Yes, I can imagine.Jerry: We also sang songs and played some English games together.Fei: That's great. You know, when I was in primary school, we never had English lessons.Jerry: How about in middle school?Fei: We studied English, but only for a test. It wasn't very practical.Jerry: Well, you've managed to learn English very well. I guess it's because you're a "Super Student".Fei: Ha ha ha. Not me! The kids you saw today seem to be much more "super" than I am. They're the future of China.Jerry: Yes, they are, so China must have a bright future! I wonder what this country will be like in 15 or 20 years when these kids are adults...F4. The Headless Horseman/Sleepy HollowOne cold winter night, early in the New Year, a certain Dutchman left the tavern in Tarrytown and started walking to his home in the hollow nearby. His path led next to the old Sleepy Hollow cemetery where a headless Hessian soldier was buried. At midnight, the Dutchman came within site of the graveyard. The weather had warmed up during the week, and the snow was almost gone from the road. It was a dark night with no moon, and the only light came from his lantern. The Dutchman was nervous about passing the graveyard, remembering the rumors of a galloping ghost that he had heard at the tavern. He stumbled along, humming to himself to keep up his courage. Suddenly, his eye was caught by a light rising from the ground in the cemetery. He stopped, his heart pounding in fear. Before his startled eyes, a white mist burst forth from an unmarked grave and formed into a large horse carrying a headless rider. The Dutchman let out a terrible scream as the horse leapt towards him at a full gallop. He took to his heels, running as fast as he could, making for the bridge since he knew that ghosts and evil spirits did not care to cross running water. He stumbled suddenly and fell, rolling off the road into a melting patch of snow. The headless rider thundered past him, and the man got a second look at the headless ghost. It was wearing a Hessian commander's uniform. The Dutchman waited a good hour after the ghost disappeared before crawling out of the bushes and making his way home. After fortifying himself with schnapps, the Dutchman told his wife about the ghost. By noon of the next day, the story was all over Tarrytown. The good Dutch folk were divided in their opinions. Some thought that the ghost must be roaming the roads at night in search of its head. Others claimed that the Hessian soldier rose from the grave to lead the Hessian soldiers in a charge up nearby Chatterton Hill, not knowing that the hill had already been taken by the British.Whatever the reason, the Headless Horseman continues to roam the roads near Tarrytown on dark nights from that day to this.F9. Spider-ManA rather odd thing has just occurred in the life of nerdy high school student Peter Parker: after being bitten by a genetically modified spider, his body chemistry is altered mutagenically. He can now scale walls and ceilings, he has superhuman strength and super-fast reflexes, and he develops a precognitive sense that warns him of approaching danger.Adopting the name Spider-Man, Peter first uses his newfound powers to make money, but after his uncle is murdered at the hands of a criminal Peter failed to stop, he swears to use his powers to fight the evil that killed his uncle. At the same time, scientist and businessman Norman Osborn, after exposure to an experimental nerve gas, develops an alternate personality himself: the super-strong, psychotic Green Goblin! Peter Parker must now juggle three things in his life: his new job at a local newspaper under a on-edge employer, his battle against the evil Green Goblin, and his fight to win the affections of beautiful classmate Mary Jane Watson, against none other than his best friend Harry Osborn, son of Norman Osborn! Is this challenge too much for even the Amazing Spider-Man to handle?F10. The Happy TrumpetThere was once a land in which the sound of a magic trumpet could be heard everywhere. The music ensured that there would be happiness and joy for all. However, one day, the trumpet disappeared, and everyone in that land ended up feeling sad. No one did anything, except for a little girl who went off, determined to find the trumpet. She asked everywhere, and then someone took her to see the wise old man of the mountains. The man told her that the trumpet was in the Well of Shadows, and he gave her a violin which might turn out to be useful. When the girl arrived at the Well, she found some musicians next to it. They wereplaying sad tunes, and she went over to play with them. However, on hearing such sad music, the girl realized that no one, including the trumpet, would want to come out of the well to be greeted by that kind of atmosphere. So she started to play the cheeriest, happiest music she could. She didn't give up, and even managed to cheer up the other musicians. Together they improved the atmosphere around the well so much that the trumpet came out, more joyful than ever. And, once again, happiness returned to that land. Thanks to this, the girl realized the value of offering joy to others, it being the best remedy for those who are sad. And from that day onwards, in that land, anyone who saw someone looking sad would send them their happiest smiles, along with a little music.F11. Forever a MonsterOnce upon a time, there was a boy who was so badly behaved that the Chief Fairy of the land came by to punish him. The Fairy turned the boy into a monster, in a spell which meant the boy could only escape from being a monster if he managed to seriously frighten someone. At first the boy thought this would be easy, but he soon found that the children in his area were very difficult to scare.A long time passed, and he got more and more fed up; so he decided to look for some easy prey: a boy who was well known as a sucker. To ensure success, he studied this boy for some time, following him wherever he went, and in passing, seeing all the good works he did. His target gave to charity, played with the children in hospital, helped old people...Finally, he had fully prepared the best fright ever. A fright that would free him from monster-hood forever, and leave that good, unsuspecting boy, scared stiff. However, when he went to frighten the boy, there came into his mind the images of all the people the boy had helped. The monster decided to leave the boy alone, because he realized that all his good work was without price. And if he did the boy any damage, he would be responsible for him not being able to help more people. 11 At that exact moment the Chief Fairy appeared, and rewarded the monster's goodattitude by turning him back into a boy.And that boy, who had been so badly behaved, became very kind, and a good friend of the boy he had been about to frighten to death.。
