When I was in high school, I spent some time as a teacher for a group of disabled students. There were several kids in my class, all with different disabilities, but I still remember two of them today. One’s name was Jim and the other’s was John. They were brothers and both of them had some sort of muscular disease. They both had to sit in wheelchairs, but they had personality. I remember that they used to bring rock and roll tapes to class with them. They became really excited and happy when they would play the music that we all enjoyed it, especially if I had’t heard of that particular band. Then we became good friends.

When it came time to graduate, we were all trying to decide who to walk with when we received our diplomas(文凭) during the ceremony. I chose to ask my disabled friend Jim to be my partner. He was so excited that his eyes filled with tears. I thought more about the walk than the diploma itself. And as I walked next to Jim in his wheelchairs, he received cheers from a hall full of people. I was so proud of him.

I got a card from Jim soon afterwards, thanking me for the care and help that I had given to them both. Jim died soon after graduation. I attended his funeral(葬礼), along with our high school headmaster. I still have Jim’s card to this day, and I value it more than anything I own. When I was about 12, I had an enemy, a girl who liked to point out my shortcomings(缺点). Week by week her list grew: I was very thin, I wasn’t a good student, I talked too much, I was too proud, and so on. .I tried to hear all this as long as I could. At last, I became very angry. Go and make a list of everything she said and mark the points that are true. Pay no attention to the other things she said.”

I did as he told me. To my great surprise, I discovered that about half the things were t rue. Some of them I couldn’t change (like being very thin), but a good number I could—and suddenly I wanted to change. For the first time I go to fairly clear picture of myself.
