第Ⅰ卷第一部分:阅读理解( 共两节,满分40分)第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。
AAccording to the government, wind farms off the Pacific coast could produce 900 gigawatts of electricity every year. Unfortu nately, the water there is far too deep for even the tallest wind mills to touch bottom. An experiment under way off the coast of , however, could help put them anywhere. The project, called Hywind, is the world’s first large-scale deepwater wind turbine (涡轮发电机). Although it uses a fairly standard 152-ton, 2. 3-megawatt turbine, Hywind represents totally new technology. The turbine will be fixed 213 feet above the water on a floating spar, a technology Hywind’s creator, the Norwegian compa ny StatoilHydro, has developed recently. The steel spar, whic h is filled with stones and goes 328 feet below the sea surface , will be tied to the ocean floor by three cables ; these will kee p the spar stable and prevent the turbine from moving up and down in the waves. Hywind’s stability in the cold and rough se a would prove that even the deepest corners of the ocean are suitable for wind power. If all goes according to the plan, the t urbine will start producing electricity six miles off the coast of southwestern as early as September. To produce electricity on a large scale, a commercial wind far m will have to use bigger turbines than Hywind does, but it’s d ifficult enough to balance such a large turbine so high on a flo ating spar in the middle of the ocean. To make that turbine he avier, the whole spar’s center of gravity must be moved much closer to the ocean’s surface. To do that, the company plans t o design a new kind of wind turbine, one whose gearbox (变速箱) sits at sea level rather than behind the blades.Hywind is a test run, but the benefits for perfecting floating wind-farm technology could be extremely large. Out at sea, the win d is often stronger and steadier than close to shore, where all existing offshore windmills are planted. Deep-sea farms are invisible from land, which helps overcome the windmill-as-eyesore objection. If the technology catches on, it will open up vast areas of the planet’s surface to one of the best low-carbon power sources available.1. The Hywind project uses totally new technology to ensure t he stability of .A. the cables which tie the spar to the ocean floorB. the spar which is floating in deep-sea waterC. the blades driven by strong and steady sea windD. the stones filled in the spar below the sea surface2. To balance a bigger turbine high on a floating spar, a new t ype of turbine is to be designedwith its gearbox sitting .A. on the sea floorB. on the spar topC. at sea levelD. behind the blades3. Wide applications of deepwater wind power technology can.A. solve the technical problems of deepwater windmillsB. make financial profits by producing more turbinesC. settle the arguments about environmental problemsD. explore low-carbon power resources available at seaBMark and his brother Jason both were looking at the shinin g new computer enviously. Jason was determined not to go a gainst their father's wishes but Mark was more adventurous th an his brother. AU TORETRIEVE INITIATED(自动回收程序已启动).”The screen turned even brighter and a noise suddenly rose in volume.“I think we'd better shut it off,Mark,” Jason yelled, reaching for the power switch. He was really frightened. But his hand never reached the switch. A single beam of da zzling white light burst out of the computer screen, wrapping the boys in its glow(光芒),until they themselves seemed to be glowing. On the other hand,Italians, for example, exercise more control. We found Canadians seem to focus on negotiation in case of a conflict.”Claes said Canada,France and Italy were selected for the study because they sh are important cultural and social factors.“We chose FrenchCa nadians because they share the same language as France, and originally came from France and share certain values. Ital y was included because it was considered to have similar, strong and important family values,” he explained. The researchers examined the emotional ties between pare nts and their children by questioning 1,256 students aged 11 t o 19 years old.Canadian students reported less control and more free actio ns,according to the study. Italian parents were stricter and Frenc h parents were somewhere in the middle.Claes explains that the differences lie in education in Canada ,France and Italy.“North America has its own educational values, which promote individualization. Tolerance and comprehensio n are encouraged. Italy,on the other hand, promotes respect of authority, control, and the need for permission.” he said.Children from all three countries described their mothers as w arm and communicative. Italian and Canadian children had si milar feelings about their fathers, and reported high levels of emotional ties. But French fathers were generally thought by their children to be more distant an d cold.“We were surprised by this,” Claes admitted.“It seems as t hough the relationships between French mothers and their chi ldren were becoming closer over time, while fathers maintain a form of distance and coldness, which is more of a source of conflict in France than in the othe r countries.”8.Professor Michel Claes believes that Canada,France and Italy ________.A.have the same family spirit B.have some similar cultural traditionsC.have experienced some similar social changes D.hav e experienced similar cultural developments9.How did the researchers carry out the study ?A.By collecting answers of parents from Canada,France and Italy.B.By collecting answers of children from Canada,France and Italy.C.By questioning parents and their children from Italian Ca nadian families.D.By questioning children from FrenchCanadian familie s.10. The concept is simple: help to build a sense of community in a city by getting everyone to read the s ame book at the same time.In addition to encouraging reading as a pursuit (追求) to be enjoyed by all, the program allows strangers to com municate by discussing the book on the bus, as well as promo ting reading as an experience to be shared in families and sch ools. The idea came from Seattle librarian Nancy Pearl who la unched (发起)the "If All of Seattle Read the Same Book " project in 1998. H er original program used author visits, study guides and bookdiscussion groups to bring people together with a book, but th e idea has since expanded to many other American cities, an d even to Hong Kong.In , the mayor appeared on television to announce the choi ce of To Kill a Mockingbird as the first book in the "One Book, One Chicago" program. As a result, reading clubs and neighb orhood groups sprang up around the city. Across the , stories emerged of parents and children reading to each other at nig ht and strangers chatting away on the bus about plot and char acter. The only problem arose in ,where local readers could not d ecide on one book to represent the huge and diverse populati on. This may show that the idea works best in medium-sized cities or large towns, where a greater sense of unity(一致)can be achieved .Or it may show that New Yorkers rather mis sed the point ,putting all their energy and passion into the choi ce of the book rather than discussion about a book itself.Ultinatelas Nancy points out, the level of success is not mea sured by how many people read a book, but by how many pe ople are enriched by the process, or have enjoyed speaking t o someone with whom they would not otherwise have shared a word.12. What is the purpose of the project launched by ?A. To invite authors to guide readers.B. To encourage peo ple to read and share.C. To involve people in community service.D. They came from many different backgroundsD. They la cked support from the local government14. According to the passage, where would the project be more easily carried out?A. In large communities with little sense of unityB. In large c ities where libraries are far from homeC. In medium-sized cities with a diverse population D. In large towns where agreement can be quickly reached15. According to , the degree of students of the project is judg ed byA. the careful selection of a proper bookB. the growing po pularity of the writersC. the number of people who benefit from reading.D. the number of books that each person reads.第二节七选五填空 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

Fear-producing TV and computer games are leading to serious dis connect between kids and the great outdoors, which will chan ge the wild places of the world, its creatures and human healt h for the worse, unless adults get working on child’s play. Each of us has a place in nature we go sometimes, even if it was torn down. We cannot be the last generation to have that place. At this rate, kids who miss the sense of wonder outdoor s will not grow up to be protectors of natural landscapes. “If th e decline in park use continues across North America, who wil l defend parks against encroachment(蚕食)?” asks Richard Louv, author of Last Child in the woods. Without having a nature experience, kids can turn out just fi ne, but they are missing out a huge enrichment to their lives. Experts predict modern kids will have poorer health than their parents—and they say a lack of outside play is surely part of it; researc h suggests that kids do better academically in schools with a nature component and that play in nature fosters(培养)leadership by the smartest, not by the toughest, Even a tiny o utdoor experience can create wonder in a child. The three-year-old turning over his first rock realizes he is not alone in the wo rld. A clump of trees on the roadside can be the whole univers e in his eyes. We really need to value that more.Kids are not to blame. They are over-protected and frightened. It is dangerous out there from time t o time but repetitive stress from computers is replacing breaki ng an arm as a childhood rite(仪式)of passage. Everyone, from developers, to schools and outdoorsy citizens , should help regain for our kids some of the freedom and joy of exploring, taking friendship in fields and woods that strengt hen love, respect and need for the landscapes. In our hig h-tech, in-a-hurry age, a cell-free life is a hard concept to swallow. Our mobile phones can now access the Internet, and many people feel the need to e xpress their every thought on their blog pages. If I gave up my cell-phone, people would think I was mad.I wish I had the strength to toss away my technology. I hav e an office phone, a home phone, an e-mail and if people want to contact me, they can. If I'm out, pe ople can leave a message. Do they really need to find me 24/ 7?However, I'm a bit like Frodo in the movie Lord of the Ring s. The power of the ring is too strong and I can't let it go.Mobile phones have become necessary tools in our busy li fe. For most people, they hold all contacts and many of us do n't write up address books any more. The latest phones carry our music, pictures, movies and everything else. We feel lost without this device and when we do misplace it, we feel cut o ff from our fellow."Where have you been?" said a friend, who saw me a we ek after I lost my cell-phone, "I tried calling you, but you disappeared. You disapp eared off the face of the Earth." See, when you don't have a mobile phone, you don't exist.I'm not really going to toss my mobile phone away, in fact. We humans are such social animals and mobile phones serv e us well. So in 2009, I've decided not to serve my mobile ph one. Like all machines, I can always turn it off.28. When you don't have a mobile phone, you don't exist.C. The writer decides not to serve his mobile phone.D. We humans can control ourselves and machines.DThe world is changing so fast that English, perhaps the most worldly of languages, is struggling to keep up.Learners in the future are likely to be much younger. Young c hildren are often said to be better at language learning than ol der learners but they also have special challenges. Young chil dren don’t usually have the kind of instrumental motivation an d determination for learning English that older learners often h ave. English lessons must therefore be fun and rewarding. The reasons why people learn English are also changing. Glo balization is bringing together more people than ever who spe ak different languages and who are turning to English as the means of communication. The English learners of the future may be less worried about sounding exactly like a native spea ker and more concerned about how to use English effectively in cross-cultural communication. We may be hearing more non-native speakers in dialogues and a wider range of the “New E nglishes” now used around the world.Technology will allow English to come to you, rather than you having to go to a special place to learn English.Learning English has always involved both pain and pleasure, private effort and social activity. Traditional learning provided take-it or leave-it mixes of these as well as of content but in future learners wil l be able to choose a plan which suits their cultural and psych ological dispositions(性情), or their particular needs at that moment. They, rather tha n their teachers, will decide how, what and when they will lear n.Above all, learning English is about communication and an im portant benefit of learning English is being able to exchange v iews and make friends with people all over the world. Despite the growing independence of learners, trusted institutions and brand names will remain important.32. Compared to older learners, young English learners.A. are more active in learningB. are more hard-working in learningC. have more difficulties in learningD. have less lasting determination in learning33. People will pay more attention to English pronunciation.D. Teachers will play a more important role in one’s English le arning.35. What can be inferred from the passage?A. Learning English means no pain in the future.B. English training schools will not be popular with young peo ple in the future.C. English learners will become less independent in the future .D. More attention will be paid to personal needs in English lea rning in the future.(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

For example, we cannot remember everyone we have ever met or what we did on every single day of our lives. However, there are some people who do have prodigious memories. These people have a rare condition known as savant syndrome (学者症候群). Savants suffer from a developmental disorder, but they also exhibit great talents that contrast(显出差异) sharply with their physical and mental disabilities.Kim Peek (1951-2009) was a savant who lived in Salt Lake City, Utah, in the United States. He was born with damage to parts of his brain, but it seemed that other parts of his brain, particularly those relating to memory, became over-developed.Peek’s unique abilities appeared at a very early age. When he was just 20 months old, he could already remember every book that was read to him. Peek could read two pages of a book at the same time---one page with the right eye and one with the left---in less than 10 seconds and remember everything he read. By the time he died, Peek had memorized more than 9,000 books. Hecould remember all the names and numbers in a variety of telephone books. He could remember thousands of facts about history, literature, geography and sports.Dr. David Treffert, an expert on savant syndrome, once described Peek as “a living Google” because of his astonishing ability to memorize and connect facts. However, at the same time, Peek was unable to carry out simple tasks, such as brushing his hair or getting dressed, and he needed others to help him. In 1989, the movie Rain Man won the Oscar for best Picture. The main character in the movie, played by Dustin Hoffman, was based on Kim Peek’s life. He started to appear on television, where he would amaze audiences by correctly answering difficult questions on different topics. Peek became world famous, and he and his father began touring widely to talk about overcoming disabilities. I lived my first five years at sea. And ever since, all I have wanted is to return to that life.”With her yacht(游艇) Guppy, Dekker began her journey at 14 and sailed 50,004 kilometers in 519 days. The flying fish keeping her company, the dolphins following in her wake and the warm days spent on deck playing the flute (长笛) as she watched another unforgettable sunset were enough to make others jealous. But these didn’t always go well. There were terrible moments in which Dekker feared death. On one occasion, a whale almost turned Guppy over. Another time, she battled extreme winds and Guppy surfed down 8-meter-high waves.Out on the open sea alone, she also got used to living without a fridge, a flushing(用水冲洗) toilet, and a hot shower.“As a human being you don’t need much,” she told . “ They might make life more comfortable, but you really don’t need them to be happy.”In fact, her outlook on life was shaped by the tri p. “I wanted the storms. I wanted the calms.I wanted to feel loneliness,” she told The New York Times. “And now I know all these things. AThe story all began with a simple announcement from the church wall one Sunday morning. LaSalle Street Church’s pastor, Laura Truax, told his 320 regular members that the church had recently received a large $ 1. 6 million profit in a real estate deal (房地产交易) and that she would set aside that amount by 10 percent to divide among her parishioners (教区居民).Each would get a $500 check to do something positive for someone, and someone could be the parishioners themselves. The money came with no conditions attached; parishioners did not have to provide proof of money spent. It just came with the hope that the money would be used for good.LaSalle’s congregation (集会)is racially and financially diverse; More than 60 percent of members have advanced degrees while about a third live a paycheck-to-paycheck life. AThe Chinese word “Shanzhai〞 means a small mountain village, but now it becomes an accepted name for fakes (假货), after “Shanzhai Cell-phones〞 produced by small workshops in southern China became popular in the mainland market over the past two years.Besides “Shanzhai〞electronic products, there are “Shanzhai〞movies, “Shanzhai〞 stars and even a “Shanzhai〞 Spring Festival Gala (联欢晚会), a copy of the 25-year-old traditional show presented by CCTV on Chinese Lunar New Year’s Eve.“Shanzhai〞 has become a culture of its own, meaning anything that imitates something famous. In Chongqing, “Sha nzhai〞version “Bird’s Nest〞and “Water Cube〞 woven by farmers with bamboo attract wide attention from tourists. Both are copies of the famous Olympic buildings in Beijing.A literature critic said that taking the “Shanzhai〞 Gala as an example, when the traditional CCTV program becomes less and less attractive to the audience, the“Shanzhai〞 version appears timely to attract people. “Although it is often connected with poor techniques and operation, ‘Shanzhai’ culture meets the psychological needs of common people and could be a comfort to their minds,〞 he said.To the mainstream (主流的) culture, the rise of “Shanzhai〞 culture is a challenge and a motivation (动力). People believe different kinds of cultures developing together is a perfect situation and it is for the public to choose.21. The Chinese word “Shanzhai〞 may have started with ______.A. Spring Festival GalaB. electronic productsC. fake cell-phonesD. Olympic buildings22. According to the passage, “Shanzhai〞 culture refers to ______.A. the action that a person imitates famous peopleB. products with poor techniques and qualityC. those similar names to famous brandsD. anything that imitates something famous23. We can infer that the mainstream culture ______.A. may develop faster because of the challenge of “Shanzhai〞 cultureB. is the challenge of “Shanzhai〞 cultureC. will be replaced by “Shanzhai〞 cultureD. is held back by “Shanzhai〞 cultureBWhen students and parents are asked to rate subjects according to their importance, the arts are unavoidably at the bottom of the list. Music is nice, people seem to say, but not important. Too often it is viewed as mere entertainment, but certainly not an education priority〔优先〕. This view is shortsighted. In fact, music education is beneficial and important for all students.Music tells us who we are. Because music is an expression of the beings who create it, it reflects their thinking and values and the social environment it came from. Rock music represents a lifestyle just as surely as does a Schubert song. The jazz influence that George Gershwin and other musicians introduced into their music is obviously American because it came from American musical traditions. Music expresses our character and values. It gives us identity as a society.Music provides a kind of perception〔感知〕that cannot be acquired any other way. Science can explain how the sun rises and sets. The arts explore the emotive meaning of the same phenomenon. We need every possible way to discover and respond to our world for one simple but powerful reason: No one way can get it all.The arts are forms of thoughts as powerful in what they communicate as mathematical and scientific symbols. They are ways we human bein gs “talk〞 to each other. They are the language of civilization through which we express our fears, our curiosities, our discoveries, our hopes. The arts are ways we give form to our ideas and imagination so that they can be shared with others. When we do not give children access to an important way of expressing themselves such as music, we take away from them the meanings that music expresses.Science and technology do not tell us what it means to be human. The arts do. Music is an important way we express human suffering, celebration, the meaning and value of peace and love.So music education is far more necessary than people seem to realize.24. According to Paragraph 1, students _______.A. disagree with their parents on educationB. regard music as a way of entertainmentC. view music as an overlooked subjectD. prefer the arts to science25. In Paragraph 2, the author uses jazz as an example to _______.A. compare it with rock musicB. introduce American musical traditionsC. show music identifies a societyD. prove music influences people’s lifestyles26. According to the passage, the arts and science _______.A .approach the world from different anglesB. explore different phenomena of the worldC. express people’s feelings in di fferent waysD .explain what it means to be human differently27. What is the main idea of the passage?A. Music is an effective communication tool.B. Music should be of top education priority.C. Music makes students more imaginativeD. Music education deserves more attention.CA new planet-hunting technique has detected the most earth-like planet yet around a star other than our sun, raising hopes of finding a space rock that might support life, astronomers (天文学家) reported recently.“This is an important discovery to answer the question ‘Are we alone?’〞 said Michael Turner of the National Science Foundation.“The team has discovered the most earth-like planet yet, and more importantly, has proved the power of a new technique that is sensitive (灵敏的) to detecting planets that are fit for people to live on,〞 Turner said in a statement. In the last decade, astronomers have detected more than 160 planets moving around stars outside our solar system. Most of these have been gas giant planets like Jupiter, which are unfit for life. But an international team has detected a cold planet about 5.5 times more massive than the earth — still small enough to be considered earth-like — moving around a star about 20,000 light years away, close to the center of the Milky Way.To find this new planet, the team used a technique called gravitational microlensing (引力微观透镜法). When a planet is circling the closest star, the planet’s gravity can add itsown signature to the light. This kind of light signature was observed on July 11 by a group of telescopes in a project known as OGLE, short for Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment.“The main advantage of microlensing is the signals for low-mass planets: They’re not weak signals. They’re j ust rare,〞 Bennett of the University of Notre Dame in Indiana said by telephone. “If there happens to be a straight line between a foreground star with its planet and the background source star, then you’re able to detect that planet.〞28. The underlined w ord “detected〞in Paragraph 1 probably means “_________〞.A. discoveredB. destroyedC. createdD. searched29. The author’s purpose in writing this passage is to ____.A. prove that scientists have a lot of difficulties in doing scientific researchB. explain why this planet moves around a star like our sunC. teach the readers some basic knowledge about the universeD. tell people about a new technique that finds the most earth-like planet moving round anotherstar30. From the news report we can infer that _________.A. the planet is like the earth because it is close to the center of the Milky WayB. it is quite possible that life may exist on other planets in the universeC. people have no interest in finding a planet that might support lifeD. the question “Are we alone〞 is too difficult for scientists to answer31. Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage?A. The signals coming from low-mass planets are too weak to be noticed.B. Most of the discovered planets are not fit for people to live on.C. If a star with its planet happens to be in line with the source star, then the planet canbe found.D. The power of the new technique is proved by the discovery of the earth-like planet.DAll over the world, and for many different reasons, there are millions of people who rarely or never eat meat. These people are called vegetarians. To people who eat meat, being a vegetarian may seem like a very strange thing, diets for several different reasons.First, vegetarians have an enormous health advantage. One of the major health problems inmodern societies is not too much protein but too much fat, especially in the form of animal fats. Medical evidence suggests that animal fats, including butter, contribute to the development of cholesterol in the human body. High amount of cholesterol seem to be part of the cause of heart disease. Most vegetarians have low level of cholesterol. High amounts of animal fats also seem to lead to certain kinds of cancer, and vegetarians are typically less vulnerable to these cancers than people who eat a lot of meat. Overall, studies comparing the health of vegetarians and meat-eaters show that the meat-eaters are twice as likely to die of heart disease as vegetarians are.Better health is one reason that people choose to become vegetarians. Another reason is religion. Some religions forbid the eating of meat. The largest of these is the Hindu religion, which has about 600 million believers in the world. Although not all Hindus are vegetarian, many are, and there are many believers of other religions such Buddhism and even some Christian religions that also do not eat meat. Many vegetarians do not eat meat simply because they do not like the taste of it. They have no religious or philosophical reasons; they just do not like meat. Another important reason that vegetarians give for not eating meat is the health advantages that were given above. Lastly, there are many people who do not eat meat because they just do not like the idea of killing animals for food. They believe that life, all life, is valuable , and that we do not have to destroy life to feed ourselves when there are other good sources of food.32. According to the passage, people choose to be vegetarians for the following reasonsEXCEPT________.A. they want to stay healthyB. they are too kind to put the idea of killing animalsC. they live in areas where meat supply is not adequateD. they should not eat meat due to their religious belief33. Which of the following is true according to Paragraph 2 ?A. Vegetarians enjoy a more healthy life than the meat eaters.B. Heart disease and cancer are caused by large amounts of protein.C. There are twice as many meat-eaters as vegetarians who die of cancer.D. There are less health problems in modern society due to advanced medical care.34. What does “vulnerable〞 mean in Paragraph 2?A. Having low level of cholesterol.B. Having high level of cholesterol.C. Having weak ability to resist diseases and harms.D. Having strong ability to resist disease and harms.35. It can be inferred from the passage that __________.A. being a vegetarian may be a very strange thingB. vegetarians eat meat on some special occasionsC. all vegetarians have reasons for their not eating meatD. most vegetarians believe that life without meat is happy.第二节〔共5小题;每一小题2分,总分为10分〕根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最优选项。

He could remember all the names and numbers in a variety of telephone books. The main character in the movie, played by Dustin Hoffman, was based on K im Peek’s life. He started to appear on television, where he would amaze audiences by correctly answering difficult questions on different topics. Peek became world famous, and he and his father began touring widely to talk about overcoming disabilities. There were terrible moments in which Dekker feared death. On one occasion, a whale almost turned Guppy over. Another time, she battled extreme winds and Guppy surfed down8-meter-high waves.Out on the open sea alone, she also got used to living without a fridge, a flushing(用水冲洗) toilet, and a hot shower.“As a human being you don’t need much,” she told . “ They might make life more comfortable, but you really don’t need them to be happy.”In fact, her outlook on life was shaped by the trip. “I wanted the storms. I wanted the calms. I wanted to feel loneliness,” she told The New York Times. “And now I know all these things. It’s the end of the dream I had as a child, and it’s the beginning of my life as a sailor.”28. According to the text, in which year did Dekker begin her journey of 50,004 kilometers at sea?A. Mars watchers have long believed that the planet’s poles contain frozen water, but scientific findings in the past –including NASA’s Mars Odyssey orbiter’s evidence of large amounts of ice –were based more on inferences (推论), European Space Agency scientists said. While Mars Odyssey has been able to indirectly show the presence of water at the pole using temperature monitors, the European camera has for the first time been able to map the polar cap using infrared technology that shows where water molecules are present, said scientistJean-Pierre Bibring. If Mars once had surface water, there were possibility for it to support life, although members of the European project have said that it remains too early to draw conclusions.NASA’s Mars Odyssey, which has orbited the planet for two years, previously turned up evidence of lots of ice mixed with the soil, as little as 40 centimetres from the surface. \ James Garvin, lead scientist for NASA’s Mars exploration program, told the Associated Press today that Mars Express had offered further confirmation of what scientists have long known: “Mars is a water planet.”At a news conference earlier, he said the Express’s results were “not unexpected.”“That’s wonderful results, it’s instant science, and I think scientists are going to want some time to think about what that means in the context of what we’re learning.”As far back as 1940, scientists using telescopes saw vapours they believed indicated the presence of water. From the passage we can learn that Donald Sloan ______.A.is about to graduate from a universityB. is good at singing and dancingC. has an interest in being a surgeonD. specializes in psychologyBHere’s a movie-a sharp, sugar-rush of fun that’s guaranteed to entertain the entire family. With some terrific computer-generated effects, a great cast and a fun-packed storyline, Robots is the best animated film(动画片) since The Incredibles. Yep, it really is that good. Set in a world populated by robots, Ewan McGregor plays Rodney Copperbottom, a young robot who leaves his small-town home to pursue his dream of becoming an inventor. But after arriving in Robot City, his hopes of getting a job at Bigweld Industries are destroyed when he learns the firm has been taken over by the evil Ratchet (Greg Kinnear).Egged on by his controlling mum, Madame Gasket(Jim Broadbent), Ratchet plans to reduce half on Robot City’s citizens to scrap metal by refusing to sell the spare Pans they need to survive. Instead, he wants to make a fortune selling expensive upgrades that few can afford. As he says, “Why be you when you can be new?”Aided by a few misfit robots known as the Rustles-including Robin Williams as the cowardly(胆小的) Fender (“I’m made of a metal called Afraidium”)-Rodney must track down the firm’s founder, Bigweld(Mel Brooks), and convince him t o save the city from Ratchet’s plans. The first thing that’ll strike you about the movie is the thought that’s gone into creating Robot City. It’s a wondrous world full of mechanical marvels including wind-up cars and walking streetlamps. Also te rrific are the special effects. This might be animated movie but at times you’ll catch yourself thinking it’s really a live-action film.Of course, there have been plenty of animated movies that looked the part but were let down by a weak storyline(see Shark Tale, for example). But Robots grips(扣人心弦)right from the start thanks to a heart-warming and thoroughly engaging plot that never bores. My only complaints are with Williams who, as usual, has a one-in-10 success rate with his jokes. Also a letdown is a romantic subplot between Rodney and a shapely robot called Cappy(Halle Berry)that doesn’t go anywhere.Complains aside, this is a mechanical marvel that’ll have you bolted firmly to your seat. BEST QUOTE(引述):Fender:“Even though you had a discouraging day, just remember there’s another one coming tomorrow.BEST BIT:Check out those amazing images.WORST BIT:Robin Williams’ character does an unfunny Britney Spears dance routine.IF YOU LIKED…Ice Age, The Incredibles, Toy Story…YOU’LL LIKE THIS.39. Clumsy animation.CThe first time we started using it, we thought it would just be a bit of fun, a one-time thing.__A__“Let’s just give it a try,” my fiancée said. I was a bit nervous, but I knew some of our friends were already into it, and they said it was fine and that I should relax because everyone was d oing it.“OK,” I agreed, convinced it would be harmless.___B___Before long, we were using it once a week. Then it became twice a week. We went from using it after work to using it in the mornings, and then at lunchtime, too.Suddenly we reached a point wh ere we were using it every day. Even when I wasn’t using it, I was thinking about using it. ___C___That’s when I realized the terrible truth. We couldn’t stop.Dear readers, it shames me to admit it, but I am an addict of online shopping site Taobao. And I don't think I’m the only one. __D__I see the telltale signs every where: People with bags under their eyes, clearly exhausted after staying up late browsing items they might one day need (but probably won’t),like the 1940s leather aviator cap I bought in the event I ever need to become an aviator in the 1940s.I see co-workers furtively (偷偷摸摸地)sneaking down to the mailroom, eyes darting around suspiciously.I know what's going through your mind as you read this.“This isn’t me,” you’re thinking, “I can stop anytime I want.”But can you?In China you can get same day delivery for just about anything you buy online. In Australia, my home country, the same item would take weeks to arrive.“It's the convenience," I said to my fiancée. “That’s why we're hooked.”But is that convenience worth the risk of waking up one morning to discover you’ve been buried alive in masses of brand new women’s shoes? In my case it’s probably not, especially because I suspect my fiancée won’t realize I'm missing until weeks later, when my credit card stops working and I've long since expired. So what can you do to battle this terrible addiction?Never fear, dear readers, because I've created a special five-step list to help you stop online shopping.Step one: Acknowledge you have a problem. Resist buying adult-sized, Star Wars Stormtrooper outfit on Taobao. You don’t really need it.Step two: Try not to feel guilty about buying adult-sized, Star Wars Stormtrooper outfit on Taobao. Step three: Put the computer and smartphone away, get back to nature, and take a walk in the park.Step four: Try not to feel guilty about buying a new outfit for your walk in the park. I mean, it was on sale, right?Step five: Buying a book on how to quit Taobao...from Taobao. On second thoughts, mayb e don’t listen to me, after all.42. There were dust storms. Volcanoes erupted, sending ash and poisonous gases into the atmosphere. When people appeared on the scene and began their conquest of nature, they also began to pollute the air. They cleared land, which made possible even larger dust storms. They built cities, and the soot(煤烟) from their hearths filled the air. The Roman author Seneca wrote in AD 61 of the “stink, soot and heavy air” of the imperial city. In 1257, the Queen of England was forced to move away from the city of Nottingham because the heavy smoke was unbearable. The industrial revolution brought even worse air pollution. Coal was burned to power factories and to heat homes. Soot, smoke, and sulfur dioxide(二氧化硫) fill the air.The good old days? Not in the factory towns. But there were large rural areas unaffected by air pollution. With increasing population, the entire world is becoming more urban. It is the huge cities that are most affected by air pollution. But rural areas are not unaffected. In the neighborhoods around smoky factories, there is evidence of increased rates of spontaneous abortion(自然流产) and of poor wool quality in sheep, decreased egg production and a high death rate in chickens.Traffic police in Tokyo have to wear gas masks and take “oxygen breaks”—breathing occasionally from tanks of oxygen. Smog in Athens at times has forced factory closings and traffic restrictions. Acid rain in Canada is caused by air pollution in the United States, contributing to strained relationships between the two countries. Sydney, Rome, Tehran, Ankara, Mexico City, and most other major cities in the world have had frightening experiences of air pollution. One of the two major types of smog—consisting of smoke, fog, sulfur dioxide, sulfuring acid (H2SO4), ash and soot—is called London smog. Indeed, the word smog is thought to have originated in England in 1905 as a contraction of the words “smoke” and “fog”.Probably the worst case of smog in history started in London on Thursday, 4 December, 1952.A large cold air mass moved into the valley of the Thames River. A temperature inversion placed a blanket of warm air over the cold air. With nightfall, a dense fog and below-freezing temperatures caused the people of London to put coal into their small stoves. Millions of thesefires burned throughout the night, pouring sulfur dioxide and smoke into the air. The next day, Friday, the people continued to burn coal when the temperature remained below freezing. The factories added their smoke and chemical fumes to the atmosphere.Saturday was a day of darkness. For twenty miles around London, no light came through the smog. The air was cold and still. And the coal fires continued to burn throughout the weekend. On Monday, 8 December, more than one hundred people died of heart attacks while trying desperately to breathe. By the time a breeze cleared the air on Tuesday, 9 December, more than 4,000 deaths had been caused by the smog.Soot and ash can be removed by electrostatic precipitators(静电吸尘器). Unfortunately, they use large amounts of electricity, and the electrical energy, which is hardly affordable for most of us, has to come from somewhere. Fly ash removed from the air has to be put on the land or water, although it could be used in some way.The elimination(去除) of sulfur dioxide is more difficult. Low-sulfur coal is rare and expensive. Although sulfur can be washed from finely pulverized(粉末化) coal, the process is expensive. There are also processes for changing dirty coal into clean liquid and gaseous fuels. These processes may hold promise for the future, but they are too expensive to compete economically with other fuels at present. They also waste a part of the coal’s energy.45. Body language can show how enthusiastic you are and if you are a nice person, someone who will take his work seriously, but also someone who has a sense of humor and can enjoy a joke from time to time. AWe thought we had it all --- a beautiful house, three healthy children and one more on the way, two cars, a couple of four-wheelers for entertainment --- and we loved it. Then, the market turned and my husband’s job at a construction company was gone. The company was closing down for good.We both started looking for jobs right away, but there weren’t any to be found. With each passing day we were getting increasingly worried and we continued to work together in order to pull our family through. The more we pulled together, the closer we got. I felt feelings of admiration for my husband t hat I hadn’t felt in years. That’s why it was so hard for me to watch him blame himself for our present situation. I continually asked him to stop, but he seemed to want to punish himself for not having a job. Finally, one afternoon I pulled him aside an d said, “We have four healthy children and each other. That’s what’s important. That makes you a rich man.”“But what if we lose the house? They’ll hate me --- you’ll hate me,” he replied.I smiled at him and put my hands on both sides of his face to make him look me in the eye. “No matter where we live I will be happy --- as long as I have you,” I smiled again as I realized that I wasn’t just saying that. In all the struggling together I had found that deep love for him that I had on the day we said “I do”.I could see his shoulders and neck relaxed. He held me close and we were able to talk and plan and dream together in a way that we hadn’t for quite some time. It was a turning point for us as a couple and a family. We are still struggling for our better life, but I consider us well-off because we have something that money can’t buy and no one can take away from us.21.The underlined sentence in the second paragraph means that ______.A.they became closer as they struggled togetherB.they hoped to find jobs in the same companyC.neither of them had the courage to face the difficultyD.they were trying to make their relationship closer22.We can learn from the passage that ______.A.they both found good jobs at lastB.both of them were worried about joblessnessC.her husband was to blame for the unemploymentD.they didn’t love each other when they got married23.Which of the following can best describe their present life?A.Bitter but easy.B. Comfortable and happy.B.C. Hard but warm. D. Well-off and relaxing.24.The best title of the passage might be ______.A.We Have It AllB. We Find It Again.B.C.A Perfect Couple D. Hard TimeBThere are probably no people on Earth who like to gossip as much as the British. If prying into(打探) other’s lives were an Olympic sport, then Tea m GB would surely take the gold medal. And when the British can’t watch the lives of real people, they have another source of entertainment to fall back on—the soap opera. British soap operas are very different to US TV dramas. For one, they are normally longer running. The two most popular, Coronation Street and East-enders, have been running for 48 and 24 years respectively. Both are broadcast several times a week, so remarkably there have been more than 7,000 episodes of Coronation Street. The most obvious difference is that, unlike US dramas, the British soap operas focus on the real world. There is little glamour (魅力), the stars are rarely rich, and they normally have boring jobs. Perhaps the appeal is that the lives of the characters often mirror the lives of the audience—but with some drama added. This means the viewer can relate to the characters and feel the pain and happiness they go through on the show.Because these soap operas last for decades, the cast is ever changing. The shows rarely focus on one or two main characters. Like the real world, people come and go all the time. However, there are exceptions. Coronation Street’s William Roach, 76, has played the role of Ken Barlow since the very first episode of the show in 1960, and he is still a regular. The choice of which soap opera you follow is often cultural: People from the north of British tend to watch Coronation Street as it is set in Manchester. People from the south generally prefer East-enders, which is set in the east of London. The show is generally considered grittier and is aimed at a younger audience.25. What is the main difference between American dramas and British soap operas?A. American dramas are longer.B. British soap operas are longer.C. American dramas deal with dangerous things.D. British soap operas deal with real people.26. Why do British people like to watch such operas?A. They can find their own life from the operas.B. They can enjoy the operas in their free time.C. They can watch the operas for many years.D. They care about the fate of the characters in the operas.27. The underlined world “episodes” in the 2nd paragraph probably means ______.A. playsB. pagesC. issuesD. parts28. One characteristic of British operas is that ______.A. the characters play the same role for a long time.B. the characters in the play often changeC. people don’t know what will happen nextD. there is only one or two characters in themCA. To help quit smoking.B. To lower "bad" cholesterol.C. To improve unhealthy diet.D. To control blood pressure.30. If it has been over 12 hours since you missed a dose, you should .A. change the amount of your next doseB. eat more when taking your next doseC. have a dose as soon as you rememberD. take the next dose at your regular time31. What is the main purpose of the passage?A. To teach patients ways for quick recovery.B. To present a report on a scientific research.C. To show the importance of a good lifestyle.D. To give information about a kind of medicine.DIt’s good to make mistakes, and here is why.First o f all, mistakes are a clear sign that you are trying new things. It’s always good to try new things because when you are trying new things you are growing. If you never try anything new, how can you improve? How can you expand? The simple answer is “You can’t”. Look around you. With very few exceptions, either everything you see in your physical world or every single detail of every single thing is the result of someone trying something new.Another good thing about mistakes is this: When you are making mistakes, you are learning. Consider this: Edison failed 10,000 times before he perfected the light bulb. When asked how it felt to fail that many times, he said that he hadn’t failed 10,000 times, but rather had learned 10,000 things that didn’t work. Finally, when you make a mistake you are much closer to success. Why?Because when all is said and done, you will have tried some number of things before you succeed. Every time you make a mistake you eliminate one of those things and are one step closer. But this all doesn’t mean that you should go ahead without considering the consequences of a mistake. Quite the contrary, when you try something new you have to be willing to set some reasonable limits so that in the event that it doesn’t work ou t the way you want it to, you will be in a position to try again. We all have limited resources in the form of time and money, so don’t blow them all on one approach to a problem. Realize that it probably won’t be perfect the first time and allocate (分配) these resources appropriately so you can learn, make corrections, and try it again. Only by accepting and using your mistakes in this way can you make significant advances in your business and your career. There is an old saying that goes, “If you’re not making mistakes, you’re not trying hard enough.”So go forth and make mistakes. And learn. And grow. And prosper (成功).32. From the second paragraph, we can conclude that _______.A. mistakes are unnecessary for developmentB. we are afraid of trying new thingsC. it’s common for people to make mistakesD. mistakes are better than not trying33. The underlined word “eliminate” means _______.A. avoidB. removeC. acceptD. solve34. According to the article, one thing you should pay attention to about making mistakes is _______A. taking consequences into accountB. accepting the punishment willinglyC. avoiding making the same mistakesD. trying things out one by one35. What would the writer probably suggest we say to ourselves when we make a mistake?A. Never mind, I can always try again.B. I’d better stay out of trouble.C. Ok! Now I can learn something.D. Look at this mess. Anyone would be upset.第二节:七选五(共5个小题, 每小题2分, 满分10分)Many people think of guys as being carefree when it comes to their appearance.
