高二人工智能英语阅读理解25题1<Article>Artificial intelligence (AI) has become one of the most talked - about topics in recent years. AI can be defined as the simulation of human intelligence processes by machines, especially computer systems. These processes include learning, reasoning, problem - solving, perception, and language understanding. The development of AI has a long history. It started with simple algorithms and basic machine - learning models in the past. Over time, with the advancement of technology, especially in the areas of computing power and data availability, AI has made great leaps forward. For example, in the early days, AI could only perform very simple tasks like basic arithmetic calculations. But now, it can handle complex tasks such as facial recognition and natural language processing.AI has found applications in various fields. In the medical field, AI is used for disease diagnosis. It can analyze a large amount of medical data, such as patient symptoms, medical images, and genetic information, to help doctors make more accurate diagnoses. In education, AI - based tutoring systems can provide personalized learning experiences for students. They can adapt to the individual learning pace and needs of eachstudent, offering customized study plans and feedback. In the transportation sector, self - driving cars, which are a significant application of AI, are becoming more and more common. These cars use AI algorithms to perceive the environment, make driving decisions, and ensure the safety of passengers. However, AI also faces several challenges. One of the main challenges is the ethical issue. For example, when an AI system makes a decision, it is difficult to determine who should be responsible if something goes wrong. Another challenge is the potential for job displacement. As AI can automate many tasks, there is a concern that it may replace human workers in certain industries. Also, data privacy is a crucial issue. AI systems rely on a large amount of data, and ensuring the privacy and security of this data is essential.1. What is the main idea of this passage?A. New study shows that sunshine could diminish brain power, making it harder to make the right judgments.Working in hot temperatures is already known to cause hyperthermia – a rise in body temperature – which can cause physical exhaustion. But now scientists say prolonged exposure of the head to the sun also affects the brain's ability to function properly.A study by university teams in Denmark and Greece said workers could be damaging their brains by working in hot, sunny conditions.Eight healthy, active males aged between 27 and 41 took part in the research. The brain function test consisted of four different computer-based maths and logic tasks that relied on precise calculations. Four heat lamps were positioned to radiate either on the lower body or the back, side and top of their heads.Professor Lars Nybo, of the department of nutrition, exercise and sports at the University of Copenhagen, said: "This study provides evidence that direct exposure to sunlight – especially to the head –impairs motor and cognitive performance."The decline in motor and cognitive performance was observed at 38.5 degrees. Researchers said those exposed to sunlight for long periods should cover their heads. Dips in mental performance caused by sunshine could also mean drivers were more likely to make mistakes on the road.重点单词1. tempt [tempt] vt. 诱惑;冒…的风险2. diminish [dɪˈmɪnɪʃ] vt. 减少3. judgement ['dʒʌdʒmənt] n. 判断4. exhaustion [ɪɡˈzɔːstʃən] n.枯竭;耗尽5. prolonged [prəˈlɒŋd] adj. 延长的6. exposure [ɪkˈspəʊʒə(r)] n. 暴露;曝光7. function [ˈfʌŋkʃn] vi. 运行8. consist of 由…组成;由…构成9. precise [prɪˈsaɪs] adj.精确的;明确的10. radiate [ˈreɪdieɪt] vt. 发射11. impair [ɪmˈpeə(r)] vt. 损害外刊话题:不要戴着口罩做运动!文本难度:★★★☆☆话题难度:★★★☆☆Don’t Exercise With A MaskThe coronavirus began to affect sporting events as early as January 30, when the Chinese Football Association announced it was delaying the start of the football season. Two months later it was revealed that the Tokyo Olympic Games would be postponed until the summer of 2021 – the first postponement in modern Olympic history.Sporting administrators are only now exploring ways to enable a return to training and competition at both professional and amateur levels. In the absence of a vaccine, though, there are several challenges. One of them is around breathing. When playing sport, breathing is faster and harder than at rest, which increases the risk of passing the disease on. As a result, premier league football is considering introducing face masks. Others may follow suit.Yet a mask makes it harder to inhale the quantity of air needed to perform at the highest levels. We know that wearing a surgical mask can increase the resistance to airflow. Exercise invariably leads to faster and harder breaths, so wearing a mask during exercise places a further strain on airflow. When we do heavy exercise, our muscles produce lactic acid, which causes that burning sensation. It is then converted to carbon dioxide and exhaled. But what happens if the carbon dioxide is trapped by the mask? As you move from moderate to heavy exercise, you may be re-breathing carbon dioxide, which can reduce cognitive function and increase breathing rate. There may also be less oxygen in the recycled air, which could imitate exercising at higher altitudes. So it is important we gain a better understanding of the limitations of heavy exercise with a face mask. 首要的7.inhale [ɪnˈheɪl] vt. 吸入8.surgical [ˈsɜːdʒɪkl] adj. 外科的9.resistance [rɪˈzɪstəns] n. 阻力;抵抗10. altitude [ˈæltɪtjuːd] n. 高地;海拔Day 5外刊话题:抖音从迪士尼挖高管来做CEO了文本难度:★★★☆☆话题难度:★★★☆☆Mayer Became CEO of TikTokTeenagers may not know the name Kevin Mayer, but he's about to play an outsize role in their lives. The longtime veteran of the Walt Disney Company just became the CEO of TikTok(抖音). In doing so, Mayer will take the reins of an app whose bedazzling hold over Gen Z has made it one of the most influential, albeit controversial, platforms of the COVID-19 era.Mayer has been with Disney since the early 1990s—minus a stint as the CEO of (花花公子) and other ventures—and he's helped shepherd along the acquisition of some of its most consequential brands, including Pixar(皮克斯), Marvel(漫威), and Lucasfilm(卢卡斯影业).Mayer's departure from Disney may not be a surprise, but his move to TikTok is unexpected. The app, owned by China-based ByteDance, is at a crucial moment in its short history—seeing enormous growth during the pandemic lockdowns but facing increasing criticism over its data-collection practices, particularly as they relate to its young users. As it rises in influence, the company will surely face a growing drumbeat of intense media and regulatory scrutiny. In contrast, Disney has never been more vulnerable, with the coronavirus pandemic having ravaged nearly all of its core business units, from the shuttering of theme parks and movie theaters to ongoing interruptions to its production schedules. You may well have been one yourself. A new study suggests that dogs go through a similar phase of stubbornness and disobedience when they hit puberty at about eight months old.Looking at the behaviour of a total of 378 canines, researchers found that the animals were more obedient and more responsive either side of that eight-month mark –but only when it came to their owners, not to less familiar trainers. So not only do dogs appear to have a difficult adolescence just like we do, they also share the frustration that we often feel towards our parents or caregivers when we hit our teenage years. That has big implications for long-term canine care and sheltering."This is a very important time in a dog's life," says animal behaviour researcher Lucy Asher, from Newcastle University in the UK. "This is when dogs are often rehomed because they are no longer a cute little puppy and suddenly, their owners find they are more challenging and they can no longer control them or train them." "But as with human teenage children, owners need to be aware that their dog is going through a phase and it will pass."In one experiment with 93 Labrador retrievers, golden retrievers and their cross breeds, the pooches at eight months old were found to take longer and be more reluctant to respond to a 'sit' command given by their caregiver than they were when just five months old. This year is no exception. In parts of the Southeast, spring has arrived weeks earlier than normal and may turn out to be the warmest spring on record.Apple blossoms in March and an earlier start to picnic season may seem harmless and even welcome. But the early arrival of springtime warmth has many downsides for the natural world and for humans.Rising temperatures in the springtime signal plants and animals to come alive. Across the United States and worldwide, climate change is steadily disrupting the arrival and interactions of leaf buds, cherry blossoms, insects and more.Records managed by the USA National Phenology Network and other organizations prove that spring has accelerated over the long term. For example, the common yellow trout lily blooms nearly a week earlier in the Appalachian Mountain region than it did 100 years ago.Blueberries in Massachusetts flower three to four weeks earlier than in the mid-1800s. And over a recent 12-year period, over half of 48 migratory bird species studied arrived at their breeding grounds up to nine daysearlier than previously.Warmer spring temperatures have also led beetles, moths and butterflies to emerge earlier than in recent years. Similarly, hibernating species like frogs and bears emerge from hibernation earlier in warm springs. All species don't respond to warming the same way. The fascinating concept could help us to transform the way renewable energy is generated indoors. The SEG uses the contrast between darkness and light to produce electricity. It's made up of a series of thin strips of gold film on a silicon wafer (硅片), placed on top of a flexible plastic base.Whereas shadows are usually a problem for renewable solar energy production, here they're actually harnessed to keep on generating power. The technology — which is cheaper to produce than a typical solar cell, according to its developers —produces small amounts of power and could be used in mobile gadgets, for example."Shadows are omnipresent, and we often take them for granted," says materials scientist Tan SweeChing, from the National University of Singapore (NUS). "In conventional photovoltaic or optoelectronic applications where a steady source of light is used to power devices, the presence of shadows is undesirable, since it degrades the performance of devices."In this work, we capitalised on the illumination contrast caused by shadows as an indirect source of power. The contrast in illumination induces a voltage difference between the shadow and illuminated sections, resulting in an electric current. Research has shown that the immune system needs vitamin D to fight off viruses —while it won't protect you from getting the virus if you're exposed, it could reduce the severity of the illness and help make recovery easier. You can get vitamin D naturally through sunlight. It's also found in some foods, including fatty fish like salmon, tuna and mackerel, and in small amounts in beef liver, eggs, cheese, and mushrooms. One of the most evidence-supported ways to stay healthy also happens to be free —getting enough sleep. That means 7-9 hours each night for most people, according to Harvard Health. While you're asleep, your body uses that time to do critical recovery and repair of essentialfunctions, including your immune system. Just one night of poor sleep can reduce your immune cells by as much as 70%, research shows.Exercise can keep your body functioning well, since research shows that it reduces inflammation and supports infection-fighting cells. If you're working from home or staying out of the gym, there are plenty of ways to still get your sweat on —body movements like burpees, lunges, push-ups and more can give you a quick full-body workout with no equipment. As an added bonus, endorphins (内啡肽) from exercise also reduce stress. Stress can also make a big difference for your immune system, particularly when there are alarming or uncertain events happening in the world around you. Yes, this means managing fears —good strategies include taking breaks from social media and relying on trustworthy media sources for information, both of which can help you avoid panic and misinformation. How you choose to relax will vary from person to person, whether that's taking a walk outside, curling up with a favorite book, or taking time to meditate or practice yoga or another soothing habit each day.重点单词1.supplement [ˈsʌplɪmənt] n. 补品2.severity [sɪˈverəti] n.严重3.essential [ɪˈsenʃl] adj. 基本的;必要的4.inflammation [ˌɪnfləˈmeɪʃn] n.

AThere's a new AI bot in town: ChatGPT, and you'd better pay attention, even if you aren't into artificial intelligence. ChatGPT is an AI chatbot system that OpenAI released in November to show off and test what a very large, powerful AI system can accomplish. You can ask it countless questions and often will get an answer that's useful. For example, you can ask it encyclopedia questions like, "Explain Newton's laws of motion." You can tell it, "Write me a poem," and when it does, say, "Now make it more exciting." You ask it to write a computer program that'll show you all the different ways you can arrange the letters of a word.ChatGPT is a big deal. The tool seems pretty knowledgeable in areas where there's good training data for it to learn from. It's not all-knowing or smart enough to replace all humans yet, but it can be creative, and its answers can sound downright authoritative. A few days after its launch, more than a million people were trying out ChatGPT. And it's becoming big business. In January, Microsoft pledged to invest billions of dollars into OpenAI, saying it'll build features into cloud services. OpenAI announced a $20 per month ChatGPT Plus service that responds faster and gets new features sooner. It's an AT that's trained to recognize patterns in vast series of text harvested from the internet, then further trained with human assistance to deliver more useful, better dialog. The answers you get may sound reasonable and even authoritative, but they might well be entirely wrong, as OpenAI warns. Sometimes, helpfully, it'll specifically warn you of its own shortcomings. For example, when I asked it who wrote the phrase "the squirming facts exceed the squamous mind," ChatGPT replied, "I'm sorry, but I am not able to browse the internet or access any external information beyond what I was trained on." (The phrase is from Wallace Stevens' 1942 poem Connoisseur of Chaos.) The fact that it offers an answer at all, though, is a notable development in computing. Computers are famously literal, refusing to work unless you follow exact syntax and interface requirements. Large language models are revealing a more human-friendly style of interaction, not to mention an ability to generate answers that are somewhere between copying and creativity.1. Which of the following can be a subtitle for the first paragraph?A. What is ChatGPT?B. What are the limits of ChatGPT?C. What kind of questions can you ask?D. Why is ChatGPT blowing everyone's mind?2. What made ChatGPT a big deal?A. More than a million users.B. Investment of billions of dollars.C. Its ability to generate creative answers.D. The bright future promised by Microsoft.3. We can infer the purpose of example in Paragraph Three is to________.A. Draw people's attention to OpenAIB. Reveal the weakness of ChatGPTC. Explain work pattern of the systemD. Show the methods of training ChatGPT4. Which of the following best describes the author's attitude towards ChatGPT?A. Opposed.B. Critical.C. Supportive.D. Objective.BIf you ask something of ChatGPT, an artificial-intelligence(AI) tool, you may immediately get the responses, completely certain and often wrong. The questions raised by technologies like ChatGPT cause much more tentative answers. But they are ones that managers ought to start asking. One issue is how to deal with employees' concerns about job security. Worries are natural. An AI that makes it easier to process your expenses is one thing; an AI that people would prefer to sit next to at a dinner party quite another. Being clear about how workers would redirect time and energy thatis freed up by an AI helps foster acceptance. So does creating a sense of agency: research conducted by MIT Sloan Management Review and the Boston Consulting Group found that an ability to override an AI makes employees more likely to use it.Arthur Jago of the University of Washington and Glenn Carroll of the Stanford Graduate School of Business investigate how willing people are to give rather than earn credit—specifically for work that someone did not do on their own. They showed volunteers something attributed to a specific person — an artwork, say, or a business plan — and then revealed that it had been created either with the help of an algorithm or with the help of human assistants. Everyone gave less credit to producers when they were told they had been helped, but this effect was more pronounced for work that involved human assistants. The picture that emerges from such research is messy. It is also dynamic: just as technologies evolve, so will attitudes. But it is crystal-clear on one thing. The impact of ChatGPT and other AIs will depend not just on what they can do, but also on how they make people feel.5. What should managers take into consideration when using technologies like ChatGPT?A. Skills used for them.B. Issues caused by them.C. Accuracy ensured in them.D. Alternatives discovered for them.6. What can we learn about employees' attitude towards AI from Paragraph 2?A. They find it can make their work more complicated.B. They think it is a threat for AI to replace them at work.C. They consider it's normal for AI to finish all their work.D. They feel it's vital for them to acknowledge its abilities.7. What did the volunteers think of a task accomplished with AI algorithm?A. They thought little of it.B. They were unaware of it.C. They spoke highly of it.D. They felt envious about it.8. What does the passage mainly talk about?A. The limitation of AI.B. The importance of Chat GPTC. The relationship between AI and humans.D. The practical application of Chat GPT.CArtificial intelligence (AI) has become a fashion word in recent years, and its impact on society is growing rapidly. AI refers to the development of computer systems that can perform tasks that would typically require human intelligence, such as learning, problem-solving, and decision-making. This technology is transforming every industry, from healthcare to finance, and is expected torevolutionize the future. One area where AI is making significant strides is healthcare. AI-powered tools can analyze vast amounts of medical data and help doctors make more informed diagnoses and treatment decisions. This technology is particularly useful in fields such as radiology, where AI algorithms can analyze medical images to detect abnormalities that may be missed by human eyes.In finance, AI is being used to analyze vast amounts of data to identify patterns and predict market trends. This technology can help traders make more informed decisions and reduce the risks of financial losses. Similarly, AI -powered chatbots are being used in customer service, helping to improve response times and provide personalized support. As the use of AI grows, concerns about job displacement have also arisen. Some fear that AI-powered machines and robots will replace human workers, leading to mass unemployment. While this is a possibility, it is also important to note that AI will create new jobs in fields such as data analysis, software development, and robotics.Another major concern about Al is the potential for bias and discrimination. AI algorithms are only as good as the data they are trained on, and if that data contains biases, the algorithms will also be biased. This issue is particularly concerning in fields such as criminal justice, where AI-powered systems are being used to make decisions about sentencing. If these algorithms are biased, they could make existing inequalities continue in the criminal justice system.Despite these concerns, the benefits of AI are numerous and undeniable. However, to ensure that these benefits are accessible to all and to address concerns about bias and discrimination, it is crucial to continue researching and developing moral AI.9. Artificial Intelligence: Improving Human AbilitiesDChatGPT, designed by OpenAI to carry on conversations just like humans, has become a viral excitement. The AI-powered tool went from zero to a million users in just five days! Its ability to provide in-depth answers to user questions has even drawn the attention of distinguished technology companies. The intelligent robot understands what the user says or types and then responds in a way that makes sense. Its vast body of knowledge has been gathered from the internet and archived books. It is further trained by humans. This makes ChatGPT a useful tool for researching almost any topic."We have a lot of information on the internet, but you normally have to Google it, then read it and then do something with it," says Ricardo, chief science officer and co-founder of AI company Erudit. "Now you'll have this resource that can process the whole internet and all of the information it contains for you to answer your question."ChatGPT cannot think on its own. It depends on the information that it has been trained on. As a result, the AI tool works well for things that have accurate data available. However, when unsure, ChatGPT can get creative and flow out incorrect responses. OpenAI cautions users to check the information no matter how logical it sounds. Also, ChatGPT has only been trained with information till 2021. Hence, it cannot be relied upon for anything that happened after that.Experts believe ChatGPT has limitless potential to solve real-world problems. It can translate long texts into different languages, create content on almost any topic, and even summarize books. However, ChatGPT has received mixed reactions from educators. Some believe it could serve as a valuable tool to help build literacy skills in the classroom. It could also be used to teach students difficult science or math concepts. ChatGPT lacks creativity.C. ChatGPT offers illogical information.D. ChatGPT is not properly trained.16. What is the author's attitude towards ChatGPT?A. Favorable.B. Disapproving.C. Objective.D. Intolerant.EAsk the new artificial intelligence (AI) tool ChatGPT to write an essay about the cause of the American Civil War and you can watch it produce a persuasive term paper in a matter of seconds that has even be enable to pass school exams. That's one reason why New York City school officials this week started blocking the impressive but controversial writing tool that can generate paragraphs of human-like text. The free tool has been around for just five weeks but is already raising tough questions about the future of AI in education, the tech industry and a host of professions.ChatGPT was launched on Nov. 30 and is part of a new generation of AI systems that can chat, generate readable text on demand and even produce novel images and video based on what they've learned from a vast database of digital books, online writings and other media. But unlike previous models of so-called "large language models", such as Open AI's GPT-3, launched in 2020, the ChatGPT tool is available to anyone with an Internet connection for free and designed to be more user-friendly. It works like a written dialogue between the AI system and the person asking it questions.Millions of people have played with it over the past month, using it to write silly poems or songs, trying to trick it into making mistakes, or for more practical purposes such as helping compose an email. As with similar systems, ChatGPT can generate convincing prose, but that doesn't mean what it says is factual or logical. Its launch came with little guidance on how to use it, other than a promise that ChatGPT will admit when it's wrong. Many school districts are still struggling to figure out how to set policies on whether and how it can be used. "While the tool may be able to provide quick and easy answers to questions, it does not build critical-thinking and problem-solving skills, which are essential for academic and lifelong success," said a school's spokesperson Jenna Lyle from NYC. But there's no stopping a student fromaccessing ChatGPT from a personal phone or computer at home.17. What can we learn about the term paper from paragraph 1?A. It is a result of the improvement of education.B. It can be rated as passing by schoolteachers.C. It has caught the attention of the public.D. It acts as a model for students to follow.18. What makes Chat GPT different from GPT-3?A. ChatGPT can create text.B. ChatGPT can edit digital books.C. ChatGPT is free of charge to all.D. ChatGPT can ask its users questions.19. What is Jenna's attitude towards students' use of Chat GPT?A. Favourable.B. Tolerant.C. Uncaring.D. Disapproving.20. What is the best title for the text?A. How Are Schools Handling Chat GPT?B. You Can Check When ChatGPT's Telling the TruthC. What Is ChatGPT and Why Are Schools Blocking It?D. Students Are Using ChatGPT to Do Their Homework二、七选五ChatGPT, the hardworking upgrade on Siri and Alexa, can write essays, scripts, jokes, marketing pitches — even contracts and scientific papers. ①_______ Specifically, can it write a Times editorial arguing the pros and cons of using itself to write a Times editorial? Here's what it came up with, instantly. It is our job to provide readers with informed and thought-provoking editorial content. Children don’t really study at this time. They only attend for half a day and learn what school is like.Children attend elementary school for the next six years. They learn to read and write and work with numbers. They also study the world and its people. After they leave elementary school, children go to junior high school for three years and senior high school for another three years. This is called secondary education. In some places children go to elementary school for eight years and high school for four.At any rate, elementary and secondary education together take twelve years to complete. In their secondary schooling children study more subjects. They have classes in history, geography, government and the English language and literature. They may choose to study foreign languages, advanced mathematics or science, such as physics or chemistry.Students who plan to go on to college or professional training must take some of these courses.Other students who do not plan to go on with school may have classes in accounting or typing or other subjects that will help them in the business world. Some senior high schools are vocational.Students may learn to operate machines,or learn cooking, sewing or office work.In most places in the United States children must attend school until they are sixteen or until they finish high ually at the age of seventeen or eighteen. Some children who are not good students drop out of school before they complete secondary education. This is a growing problem, for it is harder for people to find work when they have not finished their high school education.Higher education is found in colleges and universities. The average course is four years. Students choose a major and take courses in this subject. After four years they get a bachelor’s degree. Then the students may go on to graduate school and with a year or two of further study get amaster’s degree. After another two or three years of study, they may get a still higher degree, a doctor of philosophy. HigherEducation in BritainThere are two systems of education in Britain: the state system and the private system. Rich people send their children to private schools. About 6% of all schoolchildren go to private school. They have to pay a lot of money for private education. State schools are free. All children between the ages 5 and 16 years must go to school. There are state and private nursery schools and classes for 4—year—olds and some 3—year—olds, but most small children stay at home with their mothers. At the age of 5 they go to the nearest primary school. The primary school takes children from 5 to 11 years. Most primary schools are small. They have about 12 children. They are mixed schools, thatis, both boys and girls go to them. After 6 years in primary school, children go to secondary school. Parents can choose the secondary school for their children. Most parents like to send their sons and daughters to mixed school. But some parents send their daughters to girls’ schools and their sons to boys’ schools. There are different kinds of secondary school, but most of them take in all children.Small ones have about 600 pupils.Big ones have as many as 2000 pupils. Most boys and girls leave school at the age of 16. They are called school leavers. They are not called school graduates. Some of themtake an examination at schooll. This exam helps them to get a better job.A small number of boys and girls stay at school for another one or two or three years. They take advanced classes of many kinds. Most of them prepare for an advanced exam. With this exam they can get into university or go on to other training. 8% of 18—year—olds go to university. University education is three or four years. Many young people continue their education after they leave school. There are colleges and classes to give them training for their work. They go to classes every day,or one day a week,or in the evenings. Not only young people go to evening classes.Middle—aged and even old people go to evening classes or,as we say, night school. They can learn all kinds of things at night school. Some prepare for exams; others take classes in painting, or cooking, or sewing, or car repair, and many other things. Some even learn Chinese at night school. Then there is the Open University. Open University students have classes over the television and radio;they have to do exercises and write essays and send then to their teachers by post, and they have to attend proper classes for a week or two in the summer. They take an examination at the end of their studies.More and more people see that education is not just something children get in school. People can go on learning and educating themselves all their lives.English LanguageThe language we call English derives primarily from languages spoken in England for only around 1,500 years. The land now known as England was invaded by several tribes known as the Angles,Jutes and Saxons. The name England is derived from Angles’ land, and the English language comes principally from a combination of the dialects spoken by these three tribes. The people of England diffused their language around the world through the establishment of colonies. The first English colonies were founded in North America, beginning with Jamestown,in 1620.The English also established colonies in Africa,Asia and many of the islands in the Atlantic,Indian and Pacific oceans. As recently as the 1950s,one—fourth of the world’s people lived in a country where English was the official language, that is,the language adopted for use by the government, even in colonies where only a small percentage of people actually spoke English. After independence, leaders of most former British colonies selected on indigenous language as the official one but continued to use English for international communication. Now the English language is used by about 600,000,000 people in almost every part of the world.Chinese is the only language used by more people.About 350,000,000 people speak English as their native tongue. Most of them live in Australia,Canada,Great Britain,Ireland,About60,000,000 people, chiefly in India and Pakistan, speak English almost as well as their own language.Probably 150,000,000 other people can use English to some extent.Today, about one of every six uses English. Characteristics of English like all languages.Englsih has some characteristics that may make it easy to learn. It has other characteristics that make it hard to learn. People who know a language related to English find many English words easy to learn. In addition, the relatively few inflections in English make that part of the language easy to learn . Characteristics that make English hard to learn includes its spelling and idioms.Inflections .An inflection is a change in a word ——usually in the last syllable——to show its grammatical function .Inflections are used to indicate case, number, gender, voice, mood, and tense. English has only a few inflections. For example , to indicate case, the English noun "lion"has only two forms:lion and lions .Spelling is a major problem for many students of English . In English , many similar sounds are spelled differently . For example , crew ,blue , shoe, through and too all rhyme.Idioms .An idiom is an expression that cannot be translated word for word into another language without understanding it. English has many difficult idioms. A person might know what all the words in an idiom mean. But he still must learn the special meaning of the entire phrase tounderstand itSomething About TravelMen have travelled ever since they first appeared on the earth. In primitive(原始的)times they did not travel for pleasure, but to find new places where their animals could feed,or to escape from unfriendly neighbours,or to find more favourable climate(气候).They travelled on foot.Their journeys were long, tiring, and often dangerous. They protected themselves with simple weapons(武器),such as wooden or stone sticks and by lighting(点燃)fires at night and, above all,by keeping together.Being intelligent and creative(有才智和创造力的)they soon discovered easier ways of travelling. They rode on the backs of their tamed(驯服的)animals:they hollowed(挖空)out tree trunks(树干)and,by using bits of wood as paddles(桨),were able to travel across water.Later they travelled, not for necessity, but for the joy and excitement of seeing and experiencing(经历)new things. This is still the main reason why we travel today. The Tropical Jungle of the AmazonThe tropical jungle of the Amazon lies in the drainage area of the Amazon, and is the largest tropical jungle of the world. It lies between two degrees north latitude and sixteen degrees south latitude and covers anarea of 7,000,000 square kilometres. There are rich natural resources in the vast tropical jungle. The ecosystem of this area depends on the Amazon. The water vapour from the sea flows into the mainland and the rain falls. The water makes the forest grow and leaks into the soil.Much of it flows into the Amazon and to the sea at last. This forms the cycling of the water. There are many kinds of plants growing in the area. You can see bushes, tall herbs as well as tall trees, which grow rather too thickly. The AmazonThe Amazon is the longest river in South America. It has the most flow capacity and the largest drainage area in the world. It rises in the Andes Mountains in Peru and is as long as 6 500 kilometres. For tens of thousands of years, the Amazon winds its way across the vast plain, making lots of lakes and flood land.In the drainage area of the Amazon, the climate is damp and hot and it rains a lot every year. The tropical jungle covers most of the drainage area, with many kinds of plants growing there. There are as many as some 2 000 kinds of fishes and other kinds of aquatic animals, such as manatees, freshwater suckling pigs and crocodiles.Among those, there is a kind of small fierce freshwater fish, called piranha. They are man—eating. If someone is not careful enough and falls into the water,a great number of them will attack him together. They can eat up a human being in a short time. That is the kind of “dangerous fish”,referred to in the text.Time ZoneTime zone refers to a certain standard time which is suitable for a certain area. Generally, the earth is divided into 24 time zones according to meridian line, which is called the eastern time zone 1—11, and the western time zone 1—11. Each time zone covers 15 meridians. In 1884 the International Meridian Congress decided that the meridian which goes through Greenwich is used as the standard meridian. The boundary lines of every time zone are the meridians. The time of every time zone is called “zone time”. The zone time of two zones next to each other differs one hour from east to west. For example, New York in the eastern part of the USA belongs to the fifth western time zone while Los Angeles belongs to the eighth western time zone. So the time in Los Angeles is three hours later than in New York.China covers five time zones. But, for convenience, most parts in our country adopts the eighth eastern time zone, that is Beijing time.。
