Why Integrity MattersWhat Is Integrity? The key to integrity is consistency- not only setting high personal standards for oneself (honesty, responsibility, respect for others, fairness) but also living up to those standards each and every day. One who has integrity is bound by and follows moral and ethical (道德上的) standards even when making life’s hard choices, choices which may be clouded by stress, pressure to succeed, or temptation. What happens if we lie, cheat, steal, or violate other ethical standards? We feel disappointed in ourselves and ashamed. But a lapse (缺失) of integrity also affects our relationships with others. Trust is essential in any important relationship, whether personal or professional. Who can trust someone who is dishonest or unfair? Thus integrity must be one of our most important goals.Risky BusinessWe are each responsible for our own decisions, even if the decision, making process has been undermined by stress or peer pressure. The real test of character is whether we can learn from our mistake, by understanding why we acted as we did and then exploring ways to avoid similar problems in the future. Making ethical decisions is a critical part of avoiding future problems. We must learn to recognize risks, because if we can’t see the risks we’re taking, we can’t make responsible choices. To identify risks, we need to know the rules and be aware of the facts. For example, one who doe sn’t know the rules a about plagiarism (剽窃) may accidentally use words or ideas without giving proper credit or one who fails to keep careful research notes may unintentionally fail to quote and cite sources as required. But the fact that such a violation is "unintentional" does not excuse the misconduct,Ignorance is not a defense."But Everybody Does It"Most people who get in trouble do know the rules and facts but manage to fool themselves about the risks they’re taking by using excuses: "Everyone els e does it." "I’m not hurting anyone", or "I really need this grade." Excuses can get very elaborate: "I know I’m look at another’s exam, even though I’m supposed to keep my eyes on my own paper, but that’s not cheating because I’m just checking my answers, not copying." We must be honest about our actions and avoid excuses, if we fool ourselves into believing we’re not doing anything wrong, we can’t see the real choice we’re making - and that leads to bad decisions. To avoid fooling yourself, watch out for excuses and try this test: Ask how you would feel if your actions were public and anyone could be watching over yore shoulder. If you’d rather hide your actions, that’s an indication that you’re taking a risk and rationalizing it to yourself.Evaluating RisksTo decide whether a risk is worth taking, you must examine the consequences, in the future as well as right now, negative as well as positive, and to others as well as to yourself. Those who take risks they later regret usually focus on immediate benefitsand simply haven’t considered what might go wrong. The consequences of getting caught are serious and may include a "O" on a test or assignment, an "F" in the class, suspension (暂令停学) or dismissal from school and a ruined reputation. In fact, when you break a role or law, you lose control over your life and give others the power to impose punishment that you have no control over. This is an extremely vulnerable (脆弱的) position. There may be some matters of life and death or highest principle, wh ich might justify such a risk, but there aren’t many thing s that fall in this category.Getting Away with it - Or Not Those who don’t get caught pay an even higher price. A cheater doesn’t learn from the test, which deprives (剥夺) him her of an education. Cheating undermines confidence and independence: the cheater is a fraud, and knows that without dishonesty, he/she would have failed. Cheating destroys self-respect and integrity, leaving the cheater ashamed, guilty and afraid of getting caught. Worst of all, a cheater who doesn’t get caught the first time usually cheats again, not only because he/she is farther behind, but also because it seems "easier." This slippery slope of eroding ethics and bigger risks leads only to disaster. Eventually, the cheater gets caught, and the later he/she gets caught, the worse the consequences.Cheating Hurts Other, TooCheaters often feel invisible, as if their actions "don’t count" and don’t really hurt anyone. But individual choices have an intense cumulative (累积的) effect. Cheating can spread like a disease. Recent statistics suggest 30% or more of college students cheat. If a class is graded on a curve, cheating hurts others’ grades. Even if there is no curve, cheating "poisons" the classroom, and others may feel pressured to join in. ("If I don’t cheat I can’t compete with those who do") Cheating also has a destructive impact on teachers. The real reward of goof teaching is seeing students learn. But a cheater says. "I’m not interested in what you’re trying to teach, all I care about is stealing a grade, regardless of the effect on others." The end result is adestructive attack on the quality of your education. Finally, cheating can hurt the reputation of the university and harm those who worked hard for their degree. Why Integrity MattersIf cheating becomes the norm, then we are in big trouble. We must rely on the honesty and good faith of others, if not, we couldn’t put money in the bank, buy food, clothing, or medicine from others, drive across a bridge, get on a plane, go to the dentist--the list is endless. There are many examples of the vast harm that is caused when individuals forget or ignore the effect their dishonesty can have. Thesavingsand loan scandal, the stock market and junk bond swindles, and, of course, Watergate, have undermined the faith of many Americans in the integrity of political and economic leaders and society as a whole. Such incidents take a tremendous toll on our nation’s economy and our individual well-being. For example, but for the savings and loan debacle, there might be funds available to reduce the national debt and pay for education. In sum, we all have a common stake in our school, our community, and our society. Our actions do matter. It is essential that we act with integrity in order to build the kind of world in which we want to live.1. A person of integrity not only sets high moral and ethical standards but also_______。

Most countries also have private education. This means that parents can pay to have their children sent to certain schools. People who agree with this system say that it gives parents a larger choice of schools. Other people think that private schools give the children who go to them an unfair advantage over other children. At the age of three, many children go to nursery school. Two or three years later, they enter a primary school. At the age of about 11 they go to secondary school. In some countries this is called a high school. Children remain at their secondary school until they are between 16 and 18.Then they may have a chance of continuing their study at a university of college.Universities and colleges are places where some young people go to continue their education after leaving school. Only plants can use this energy directly. Their leaves are little factories that use sunlight to make food from water and things in the soil and air.Plants in turn feed all other living things. Animals can only use the sun’s energy after it has been changed into food by plants. Some animals feed directly on plants, others eat smaller animals. Meat-eating animals are only eating plants indirectly. What about human beings? We are members of many food chains. We eat vegetables and fruit. We also eat meat and drink milk. This means the sun’s energy passes through plant to animal before it reaches us.Nature is a great thing.Any food chain always produces enough for each of its members if it is left alone. As time passed, people learned to raise animals and crops. Sometimes, families produced more than they needed. So they started to trade with other families.(3) Later, people began to use money as a means of exchange. However, it was not thekind of money we use today. They used shells, rice, salt, large stones, etc.During the 600s B.C, people began using coins as money. They soon found thatcoins were easier to carry than goods and lasted a long time. Later, countries began tomake their own coins. The Chinese were the first to use paper money, probably as early as the eleventh century. The Italian traveler Marco Polo saw the Chinese using paper moneywhen he visited China in the 1200s. (4)However, European countries did not startusing paper money until 1600sToday, we have many ways to pay for things. We do not use only coins or paper money. Often, people prefer to pay for things by card. Paying with a card is easier andsafer than carrying around a lot of "real" money.1. Why did people start to trade?2. When did people begin to use paper money?座号将短文中划线的句子翻译成汉语。

(each of the question 5 points, 25 points total)Hair loss is one of those things we still do not understand. Science has, of course, shown that men are more likely than women to suffer major hair loss. Some kinds of hair loss are temporary (暂时的), an effect of illness. In those cases we can expect the hair to grow back.It all depends on whether the hair root is alive. If it is not, hair loss is permanent and nothing will help. Some daily loss of hair is a normal, healthy sign. Most people lose between 40 to 50 scalp hairs each day. Each of these scalp hairs grows for from two to six years and then rests. About three months later it is pushed out by a new hair growing from the same root. This is not something that should cause great concern.Something else we know is that normal hair loss is seasonal, with the most hair loss occurring in the fall. Everyone experiences a normal cycle of loss and growth. The problem of hair loss results when loss is greater than growth. The main cause of hair loss in men seems to be accumulation (积累) of a hormone (荷尔蒙) in the body. When that hormone reaches a certain level, the hair growing period is shortened and hair loss is the result. This is no cure for most cases of hair loss. This, however, is not the end of the world.1. The hot liquid got higher and higher and spread wider and wider. In this way, an island rose up in the sea.As time went on, hot sun and cool rains made the rock split and break to pieces. Sea waves hit against the rock. In this way, soil and sand came into being.Nothing lived on the naked soil. And then the wind and birds brought plant seeds, spiders and other little living things there. Only plants could grow first. Only they, in sunlight, could produce food from the soil, water and air. While many animals landed on the island, they could find no food. A spider made its web uselessly, because there were no insects(昆虫) for its web to catch. Insects couldn’t stay until there were plants for them to eat. So plants had to be the first life on this new island.61. In the nearly sixty two years of his life that followed, he built a literary fame unsurpassed(无法超越)in the twentieth century. As a boy he was taught by his father to hunt and fish along the shores and in the forests around Lake Michigan. The Hemingways had a summer house in northern Michigan, and the family would spend the summer months there trying to stay cool. Hemingway would either fish the different streams that ran into the lake, or would take the small boat out to do some fishing there. He would also go squirrel hunting in the woods, discovering early in life the peace to be found while alone in the forest or going through a stream. It was something he could always go back to throughout his life, and though he often found himself living in major cities like Chicago, Toronto and Paris early in his life, once he became successful he chose somewhat isolated places to live in.When he wasn’t hunting or fishing his mother taught him the good points of music. She was a skilled singer who once had wished a life on stage, but at last settled down with her husband and spent her time by giving voice and music lessons to local children, including her own. Hemingway was never talented for music and suffered through singing practices and music lessons, however, the musical knowledge he got from his mother helped him share in his first wife Hadley’s interest in the piano.66. Ernest Hemingway died in_______ .A. 1969B. 1979C. 1981D. 196167.Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage?A. His father taught him to fish and hunt when he was a boy.B. We can only make a guess, of course, but we can be sure that he will be different from what he is today. For man is slowly changing all the time.Let us take an obvious example. Man, even five hundred years ago, was shorter than he is today. Now, on average, men are about three inches taller. Five hundred years is a relatively short period of time, so we may assume that man will continue to grow taller.Again, in the modern world we use our brains a great deal. Even so, we still make use of only about 20% of the brain’s capacity. As time goes on, however, we shall have to use our brains more and more, and eventually we shall need larger ones. This is likely to bring about a physical change tool — the head, in particular the forehead, will grow larger.Nowadays our eyes are in constant use. In fact, we use them so much that very often they become weaker and we have to wear glasses. But over very long period of time it is likely that man’s eyes will grow stronger. On the other hand, we tend to make less use of our arms and legs. These, as a result, are likely to grow weaker. At the same time, however, our fingers will grow more sensitive because they are used a great deal in modern life. But what about hair? It will probably disappear from the body altogether in course of time because it does not serve a useful purpose any longer. In the future, then, both sexes are likely to be bald.Perhaps all this gives the impression that future man will not be a very attractive creature to look at. This may well be true. He asked the crowd assembled in the auction room to make offers, or bids, for the various items on sale. He encouraged buyers to bid higher figures, and finally named the highest bidder as the buyer of the goods. This is called “knocking down” the goods, for the bidding ends when the auctioneer bangs a small hammer on a table at which he stands. This is often set on a raised platform called a rostrum. The ancient Romans probably invented sales by auction, and the English word comes from the Latin auction, meaning “increase”. The Romans usually sold in this way the spoils taken in war, these sales were called “sub hash”, meaning “under the spear”, a spear being stuck in the ground as a signal for a crowd to gather. In England in the eighteenth century, goods were often sold “by the candle”: a short candle was lit by the auctioneer, and bids could be made while it stayed alight.Practically all goods whose qualities varied are sold by auction. Among these are coffee, hides, skins, wool, tea, cocoa, furs, spices, fruit, vegetables and wines. Auction sales are also usual for land and property, antique furniture, pictures, rare books, old china and similar works of art. The auction rooms at Christie’s and Sotheby’s in London and New York are world famous. An auction is usually advertised beforehand with full particulars of the articles to be sold and where and when they can be viewed by prospective buyers. If the advertisement cannot give full details, catalogues are printed, and each group of goods to be sold together,公共英语试卷 第 10 页 (共12页)called a “lot”, is usually given a number. The auctioneer need not begin with Lot 1 and continue in numerical order; he may wait until he registers the fact that certain dealers are in the room and then produce the lots they are likely to be interested in. The auctioneer’s services are paid for in the form of a percentage of the price the goods are sold for. The auctioneer therefore has a direct interest in pushing up the bidding as high as possible.76.A“bidder” (in para. 1) is a person_______ .A. who sells something.B. who buys something.C. who offers a price.D. who borrows something.77. Reading Comprehension (40’)Section A: (30’)Passage oneRomantic love is one of the most enticing topics around. Just about every movie, TV show, and country-music song contains some element of romance. For many, romantic relationships are by far the most important in their lives. As a society, we long for intimacy. We grow up believing that if we “just meet the right person” we will be happy. This message is popularized by modern media. It is perhaps one of the most destructive messages around. Quentin Crisp says: “The consuming desire of most human beings is to deliberately plant their whole life in the hands of some other person. I would describe this method of searching for happiness as immature …”When we feel unhappy it is natural to start searching for the cause of our distress. There is nothing wrong with this, but it becomes a problem when we start searching outside of ourselves. We are taught that if we are happily “coupled”we won’t have problems. It is therefore natural to blame our partner for our “aloneness.” The consequences of this belief are enormously self-destructive.Romance love is exciting, but what happens when the romance wears off? Experts estimate that romantic sexual attractions last only 18 months to two years. Using love or sex as a drug will only prevent us from reaching maturity. We do need excitement and stimulation and joy and intimacy. But in mature love we are concerned with our loved one’s joy and fulfillment. The satisfaction comes not from our own immediate gratification, but from the joy of giving to the other person, and watching them grow and thrive. If you are single, the best thing you can do to prepare for a life-long loving relationship is to work on getting your own needs met. The first thing to do is tostart identifying what they are. For instance: you long for affection and need a hug. Have you thought of asking a friend to hug you? Y ou will be amazed what will happen if you start asking people directly to meet your needs. Y ou will get some negative responses, but for the most part you will find that people are happy to help you. Many of us were taught our needs are wrong. Our needs are not wrong. We get into difficulty when we try to meet our needs in indirect ways. It is not that we shouldn’t enjoy the excitement of a new relationship or love interest; we get into difficulty when we think we will get all our needs met from this one “magical”person.1. What does Quentin Crisp think of the popular search for happiness?A) The search is not sensible.B) The media should be responsible for the search.C) Y ou can surely find happiness without the help of some other person.D) It is advisable to make such a search together with some other person.2. When one is unhappy, he tends to .A) make himself happily coupled with anotherB) search for the cause of his distress inside himselfC) search for the cause of his distress with his partnerD) think it’s his beloved one that causes his problems3. Which of the following statements is NOT true about romantic love?A) Romantic love lasts for a lifetime.B) Romantic love does not equal mature love.C) Romantic love is exciting but it can wear off.D) Many people regard romantic love as the most important part in their lives.4. To prepare for a life-long loving relationship, one should identify his own needs first and .A) avoid longing for too much intimacyB) meet some of his needs in indirect waysC) ask a friend to help him find a romantic loverD) not get all his needs met from his partner alone.5. What is the main idea of the passage?A) There is always an unequal give-and-take in mature love.B) We shouldn’t expect romantic love to meet all our needs.C) It’s a wrong belief that we should enjoy the excitement of a new relationship.D) It is natural to derive satisfaction from watching one’s loved ones grow and thrive.Passage TwoA man may usually be known by the books he reads as well as by the company he keeps; for there is a companionship of books as well as of men; and one should always love in the best company, whether it be of books or of men.A good book may be among the best of friends. It is the same today that it always was, and it will never change. It is the most patient and cheerful of companions. It does not turn its back upon us in times of adversity of distress. It always receives us with the same kindness; amusing and instructing us in youth, and comforting and consoling us in age.Men often discover their affinity to each other by the love they have each for a book --- just as two persons sometimes discover a friend by the admiration which both have for a third. There is an old proverb, “Love me, love my dog.” But there is more wisdom in this: “Love me, love my book.”The book is a truer and higher bond of union. Men can think, feel, and sympathize with each other through their favorite author. They live in him together, and he in them.“the poet’s verse(诗句), ” said Hazlitt, “slides in the current of our blood. We read them when young, we remember them when old. We feel that it has happened to ourselves. They are to be had very cheap and good. We breathe but the air of books.”A good book is often the best urn(瓮) of a life enshrining the best that life could think out; for the world of a man’s life is, for the most part, but the world of his thoughts. Thus the best books are treasuries of good words, the golden thoughts, which, remembered and cherished, become our constant companions and comforters. “They are never alone,”said Sir Philip Sidney, “that are accompanied by noble thoughts.”Books bring us into the presence of the greatest minds that have ever lived. We hear what they said and did; we see them as if they were really alive; we sympathize with them, enjoy with them, grieve with them; their experience becomes ours, and we feel as if we were, in a measure, actors with them in the scenes which they describe. The great and good do not die even in this world. Embalmed (保存) in books, their spirits walk abroad. The book is a living voice. It is an intellect to which one still listens. Hence we ever remain under the influence of the great men of old. The imperial intellects of the world are as much alive now as they were ages ago.6. The main idea of the first paragraph is thatA) one should read good booksB) books are like one’s best companionsC) one should make friends with good booksD) one should not live without books and friends7. The word “affinity in the third paragraph most probably means .A) similarity B) understanding C) rewards D) compassion8. A good book provides us with .A) survival skills in society B) love for the whole of humanityC) good words and golden thoughts D) verses written by the best poets9. By saying “The great and good do not die even in this world”, the author means that .A) the influence of great men never stopsB) writers normally enjoy a long life in historyC) good books have been well cherished in historyD) books have best preserved the wisdom of great writers10. The best title of the passage is “”.A) The Role of Books B) The Influence of BooksC) The Companionship of Books D) The Contribution of BooksPassage ThreeWhen it comes to health, the poor are doubly cursed. Not only are they more prone to deadly infectious diseases than the rich, but they have far less access to the means of improvement. Twenty years ago, Paul Farmer, an American doctor and anthropologist(人类学者), set out to do something about this. Amid the political turmoil(混乱)and poverty of rural Haiti, he created a community based health care system called Zanmi Lasante, or Partners in Health. It not only delivers appropriate, affordable medical treatment to thousands of poor people, but goes beyond the clinic to address the social causes making them sick and keeping them from getting better. As Dr. Farmer argues, improving the health of the poor is not just a medical challenge, but a question of human rights. Tackling the inequality, racism, sexism and other forms of "structural violence" which oppress the poor is as critical as extending the drugs. Or as his Haiti patients put it, medicine without food is likewashing one's hands and drying them in the dirt.Unfortunately, Dr. Farmer's powerful message is often weakened by his book's academic tone. It does, however, scream out in passages describing the human face of "structural violence". It is these personal stories that make Dr. Farmer's anger at such "stupid deaths" so compelling. The good doctor's motives and methods are better described in Mountains Beyond Mountains. This biography by Tracy Kidder traces Dr. Farmer from his unconventional upbringing and unusual education, shuttling (来回穿梭于) between the shacks of central Haiti and the halls of Harvard Medical School, to his later work around the world. Though well written, Mr. Kidder's book also makes for uncomfortable reading. The author is clearly close to his subject, having traveled with Dr. Farmer from the green poverty of Haiti to the tubercular whiteness of Russia. Too close, perhaps. The biographer seems to be seeking his subject's approval, rather than the other way round. Mr. Kidder writes, rather disturbingly, about his fear of disappointing Dr. Farmer, his own pain at wounding him with a critical remark and his relief at the doctor's forgiveness. When Mr. Kidder's health falls, this dependence becomes all the more intense. But rather than compromise the book's equity(公正), this intimacy serves to highlight Dr. Farmer's admirable, yet ultimately irritating, character. As Mr. Kidder observes, "Farmer wasn't put on earth to make anyone feel comfortable, except those lucky enough to be his patients or those unlucky enough to need him."11. What makes the "Partners in Health" system unique compared with traditional hospitals?A) It makes attempts to help the poor on a social level.B) It is aimed at treating poor people for free.C) It is designed to help the poor rise from poverty.D) It offers community help to those who are poor.12. What can be inferred from the last sentence of the second paragraph?A) Hands should not be dried in the dirt after washing.B) Medicine is also needed for cleaning hands.C) Medicine is not a long term cure to their poor health.D) Food can cure their disease better than any medicine.13. The disadvantage of Dr. Farmer's book seems to be that .A) the plots in the book are not attractive enoughB) the way he tells the stories is not compelling enoughC) the anger he expresses at "stupid deaths" is too strongD) the tone is not strong enough to arouse people's attention14. Mr. Kidder's book also makes for uncomfortable reading because .A) Mr. Kidder himself has never been involved in Dr. Farmer's lifeB) Mr. Kidder is afraid of making true comments on Dr. FarmerC) Mr. Kidder's emotions prevent him from independent writingD) Mr. Kidder is always waiting for Dr. Farmer's forgiveness15. It can be inferred from the last paragraph that .A) Dr. Farmer only helped those who are lucky enoughB) Dr. Farmer may have severely criticized the societyC) Dr. Farmer was not actually making his patients comfortableD) Dr. Farmer's job is not to make people comfortableSection B: Reading the following passage carefully and select one word or expression for 10 blanks from the 15 choices given below.
