Unit 5 First Aid李仕才一、阅读理解。
Recently I and other Red Cross volunteers met a group of victims from Hurricane Katrina. We were there, as mental health professionals, to offer "psychological first aid"and I was struck by the simple healing power of presence. As we walked in the gate to the shelter, we were greeted with a burst of gratitude (感激) from the first person we met. I felt appreciated, but also guilty, because I hadn’t really done anything yet.I first realized the power of presence many years ago when a friend’s mother passed away unexpectedly. I had received a call saying she had just passed away. I wanted to rush down there immediately, but didn’t want to intrude (打搅) on this very personal period of sadness. I was torn about what to do. Another friend with me then said, "Just go. Just be there."I did, and I will never regret it.Since then, I have not hesitated to be in the presence of others. Once I sat at the bedside of a young man suffering from the pain of his AIDS — related dying. He was not awake, and obviously unaware of others’ presence. However, the atmosphere was by no means solemn. His family, playing guitars and singing, allowed him to be present with them as though he were still fully alive. In my life, I am repeatedly struck by the healing power of presence. In it, none of us are truly alone. It is not only something we give to others but also changes me for the better.1.Why were the hurricane victims grateful to the author?A. Unit 5 First Aid李仕才一、阅读理解。
A recent survey in the United States showed that the average family spent moremoney on its pets than on its children.Although rather shocking, it should not surprise anyone who has seen the doggy parlours( 客堂 ) where loved pets rest. Are Americansunique in treating their little friends in this way? No, the English, too, pay moreattention to their pets. This can clearly be seen when we look at pet foods ,which often contain more vitamins than human food. They certainly cost much. Last year the British public spent twohundred million pounds on pet food alone, to say nothing of veterinary bills or animal furniture. It is difficult not to feel angry about this when considering what the same amount could do for victims of starvation and poverty, so it ’s not unusual for meto get hot under collar when I read an old man left all his money to his dog insteadof his children. There are a variety of reasons why I find pets-raising alarming. They causephysical problems. An example of this is New York where they have great difficultygetting rid of the mess that dogs leave on the streets. Many people find this funny, but in a number of large cities it is a major problem. Animals can cause disease, too. It is the threat of babies — a disease with no known cure.Another problem is the carelessness of pet owners. Most little children want adog or a cat ,and they continually push their mothers and fathers until they get one. It is only when the " sweet little thing " has been brought home that the parentsrealize how much time and money must be spent on " Rover" or " Bonzo" . Then they just abandon it. As a result, they are allowed to run free. English farmers losehundreds of sheep a year, killed by someone’s pet and you must have read of children being hurt by some pets of their own.Lastly, I would only suggest that we have got our priorities wrong and thatsomething should be done about it. In my view, it ’s time we stopped being sentimental about pets. I can see no reason why we should get upset when animals are cut up formedical experiments. This will lead us to discovering cures for serious human diseases, then I say,"keep cutting!"1.The doggy parlours are mentioned in the 1st paragraph to show ________.A.what costly lives the pets are livingB.where Americans keep their petsC.why children love their pets so muchD.how much pets depend on their masters2. In the second paragraph"to get hot under the collar"probably means ________.A. getting quite hotB. becoming excitedC. feeling extremely angryD. receiving a fashionable shirt3. According to the author, in which field can animals be most useful?A. Food.B. Sports.C. Entertainment.D. Medicine.4. What is the author’s attitude towards pets-raising?A. Sympathetic.B. Opposed.C. Pitiful.D. Supportive.【文章粗心】这是一篇谈论文。

必修5 Unit 5 高考试卷分块专练阅读理解提速练(4篇阅读+1篇七选五,限时35分钟)Ⅰ.阅读理解AMost buildings are built to stand up straight, but these look as if they might fall over! The church tower of SuurhusenBuilt in 1450, the 27-metre-high church tower lies in Suurhusen, Germany. It was built in wet land on foundations of oak tree trunks (树干). When the land was drained (排水) later, the wood broke down, causing one side of the tower to be a little lower than the other. In 1975, the tower became a real hazard and people were not allowed to enter until the foundations were made strong again. The lean (倾斜) of the tower is now about five degrees. The Leaning Tower of PisaThe work of building the tower began in 1173, and was finally completed in 1372. In fact, it began to lean after just a couple of floors were built. And this condition continued in the centuries after its completion. The tower was finally closed to the public in 1990 after people failed to stabilize (使稳固) its foundations. In 2001, it was reopened after engineers removed soil from underneath its raised side. Now it leans just an angle of 3.97 degrees.Capital Gate of Abu DhabiCompleted in 2011, the Capital Gate tower in Abu Dhabi was designed to lean eighteen degrees. The building stands next to the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre and contains, among other things, a fine hotel with wonderful views of the harbour. Also known as the leaning tower of Abu Dhabi, the tower is one of the tallest buildings in the city.Big Ben of LondonThe building leans 0.26 degrees to the northwest. This was mainly caused by the engineering projects (项目) that have been carried out in the ground below it since the late 1800s. The tower, which has been continuously open since it was completed in 1858, has nowhere near the lean of the Tower of Pisa and is still completely safe to enter.语篇解读:本文是一篇应用文。

BFirst aid is emergency care for a victim of sudden illness or injury until more skillful medical treatment is available. It may save a life. In many emergencies, first aid may prevent a victim's condition from turning worse and provide relief from pain. First aid must be administered as quickly as possible. In the case of the critically injured, a few minutes can make a difference.First-aid measures depend upon the victim's needs and the provider'slevel of knowledge and skill. Knowing what not to do in an emergency is asimportant as knowing what to do. Improperly moving a person with a neckinjury, for example, can lead to permanent spinal (脊柱的) injury andparalysis (瘫痪).Despite the variety of injuries, several principles of first aid can apply to all emergencies. The first step is to call for professional medical help. The victim, if conscious, should be reassured that medical aid has been requested, and asked for permission to provide any first aid. Next, assess the scene, asking people around or the injured person's family or friends about details of the injury or illness, any care that may have already been given, and pre-existing conditions such as diabetes (糖尿病) or heart trouble. The victim should be checked for a medical card that describes special medical conditions. Unless the accident scene becomes unsafe or the victim may suffer further injury, do not move the victim.First aid requires rapid assessment of victims to determine whether life-threatening conditions exist. One method for evaluating a victim's condition is known as the acronym (首字母缩略词) ABC, which stands for:A—Airway: Is it open and clear?B—Breathing: Is the person breathing? Look, listen and feel for breathing.C—Circulation: Is there a pulse? Is the person bleeding externally? Check skin colorand temperature for additional indications of circulation problems.语篇解读:本文是一篇说明文。
