汤姆森和斯特克兰方法建立于波士顿咨询公司的增长率-市场占有率矩阵方法基础之上，经汤姆森和斯特克兰二人加以完善之后而提出。

它用市场增长率和竞争状况作为决定经营单位选择战略的两个参数。

市场增长状况分为迅速和缓慢两级；竞争地位也分为强和弱两级。

下图画出了市场增长状况与竞争地位的四种组合或四个象限，以及每种象限内的战略方案组合。

汤姆森和斯特克兰方法的内容战略选择按照最可能的吸引力顺序排列，分述如下：1、象限Ⅰ中的企业（快速的市场增长与强劲的竞争地位）处于优越的战略地位，因此，最合理的战略是集中经营现有的产品或服务，预期企业做出努力以保持或提高市场占有率，进行必要的投资以继续处于领导地位。

此外，处于象限Ⅰ的公司还可考虑实行纵向一体化，以作为巩固其市场地位和保持其利润收益的一种战略选择，这在企业具有财力资源和企业具有工艺导向时更应如此。

企业突出的优势还可为公司进行同心多样化发展提供了机会，这样可作为分散风险的一条措施。

2、象限Ⅱ中的企业有良好的市场，但竞争地位虚弱。

推荐的战略首先是集中经营现有产品或服务。

然而，实施这一战略必须回答两个基本问题：为什么目前的措施导致了很弱的竞争地位？应采取什么措施来成为一个有效的竞争者？在市场迅速扩大的条件下，如果公司有资源并能够克服战略上或组织上的弱点的话，它总能寻找出一个有利的空隙市场。

然而，如果公司缺少成功地实施集中生产现有产品或服务战略的条件，则可与具有此种条件的公司实现横向一体化或合并。

假若以上战略方案都不可行，则最合逻辑的战略是跳出该行业。

具有多种经营业务的公司可考虑放弃某一经营单位；生产单一产品的公司可采取清算拍卖战略。

3、象限Ⅲ中的公司处于停滞的市场中，而且公司又具有较弱的竞争地位，这样的公司最为虚弱。

可选择的战略依次为：抽资转向战略——释放无生产率的资源用于可能的发展项目上；多样化战略——或同心多样化或复合多样化；放弃战略——放弃这一业务，跳出该行业；清算战略。
