Learning the skills of business

We study subjects like math, history and science in school. This gives us plenty of skills and knowledge to use in life. However, there are other skills that are best developed through practical, work-related experience. These are things like teamwork, punctuality (守时) and negotiation techniques(谈判技巧) –all of which are important in the world of employment.

There is a charity (慈善机构) in the UK that helps young people learn useful business skills. Young Enterprise gathers volunteers from more than 3,500 companies. They go to schools to teach students through different programs, such as Personal Economics and Learn to Earn.

Students who participate in these programs often go on to achieve great things in the worlds of business and industry.

Josh Sharp was only 14 when he first took part in the Young Enterprise program. Two years later, he received an investment (投资) of £150,000 (about 1.35 million yuan) to start up his internet-based company Fitness Central UK. The company helps build links between fitness centers and their customers (顾客).

Fourteen and 15-year-old students at a Burnley secondary school near Manchester have received expert advice from managers at multinational (跨国公司) business Balfour Beatty. The students got advice on how to price and sell glassware products (玻璃制品). They
