AWe live in a sweet world. The average American kid eats more than 20 teaspoons of sugar per day, and adults eat 50% more sugar today than they did in the 1970s. We all know that too much sugar isn’t good for you. But did we know it could be dangerous?A team of researchers at the University of Utah used mice to do a study on the bad effects of sugar. They found it could have serious effects on people’s health.Sugar is found not only in sweets and candies, but also in many household items like pasta and crackers.During the 58-week-long study, mice were fed a diet containing 25% more sugar. This percentage equals a healthy human diet along with three cans of soda daily. The team found that these mice were twice as likely to die as mice fed a similar diet without the sugar. Though the mice did not show signs of obesity or high blood pressure, male mice produced 25% fewer offspring (后代) than the other mice.Scientists often use mice for research because they have a similar genetic (基因) structure to humans. “Since most substances (物质) that are dangerous in mice are also dangerous in people, it’s likely that those physical problems that cause those mice to have increased deaths also work in people,”says study author James Ruff of the University of Utah. Findings from this study show bad effects that are not as noticeable as weight gain or heart problems. Sugar can contribute to long-term changes in the body that can change development and even shorten lives.Cutting sugar out of the American diet altogether may be difficult. But making the effort to control our nation’s sugar need will provide for a truly sweeter future.1. Music plays a very important part in our education. Students who learn music learn a lot of music history at school. This includes “modes (调式)”,which were used in churches during the development of music. They are still used today. Students learn about the historical events that were taking place when the music they play was written. They learn what the music was used for. So much of our culture is in music and has been for centuries. Music also helps with science. Students use science to help them discover what sounds good together and what doesn't. Students also need science to understand something called the “overtone series”, which is about how music is produced by vibration (颤动) and why. Students learn a lot about languages. Many songs are written in other languages, including ancient ones. Students must learn to translate these works to understand what they are singing about. Some songs are famous poems or short works set to music. Students learn a huge amount of coordination (协调) through music, so parts of the body can work better together. Students must use fine motor skills in order to play an instrument. Singers and players must learn breath control and be in good shape to play.Students learn about art. Some famous pieces were written about important works of art, and students learn about the artists and styles as they're playing themusic. Music education also brings higher thinking to our children. It allows them to think about complex patterns (How can I make my part sound better? How do this music and these different parts fit together?). Students have to know absolutely what every other musician does at all times. In that way, it develops teamwork. As one can see, music is very important to education besides bringing us fun.9.

This text is most probably taken from a ________ .A. newspaperB. magazineC. websiteD. textbookCIf you hear the sound of a mobile phone beeping in a bag or pocket, you could think that someone has received a text message. Text messaging, or texting, is the art of sending a short, electronic message between two mobile phones. The users should pay a certain amount to send messages via SMS--- short message service. But in the last few years, with the development of smart phones, messaging in this way has been at a low ebb.The rise of smart phones has seen an increase in the use of instant messaging apps. The apps offer a cheap alternative to traditional texts. Using wireless internet connections, people can send a number of messages to their friends at a very low cost. Unlike traditional mobile texts, the users usually only have to pay to download the app once, after which each message they send is free.Instant messaging apps have become popular all over the world. Hundreds of millions of people use the apps to chat with their friends. These apps allow people to send pictures messages for free---something which previously was quite costly. Many of these apps also allow users to have access to a huge range of colourful emotions, which can help people express their emotions. The research company Informa said that almost 19 billion messages were sent per day using chat apps last year, compared with 17.6 billion SMS texts. And it expects the chat app market to grow to 50 billion per day by 2015. So does this really mean the endof communicating by texting?Pamela Clark-Dickson from Informa doesn’t think so. She says that there are a large number of people who use normal mobile phones, particularly in developing countries and prefer the SMS messaging tool. For the moment, these users still find that SMS is the best messaging experience for them.8. The underlined phrase “at a low ebb” can be replaced by “______”A. on the increaseB. on the decreaseC. in the endD. at the moment9. What can we learn about instant messaging apps?A. Normal mobile phones can be used to download the apps.B. The apps enjoy high popularity in developing countries.C. Only part of the messages sent by the apps are free of charge.D. It will cost the users some money for downloading the apps.10. Instant messaging apps won’t take the place of the SMS messaging tool soon inthat_____________________________________A. there are a large number of people who enjoy using normal mobile phones.B. many people in developing countries can’t afford to buy smart phones.C. many people in developing countries don’t like instant messaging appsD. instant messaging apps are only known to people in developed countries.11. In which section of an English newspaper will this text probably be found?A. Science & TechnologyB. CultureC. EntertainmentD. Health & careDEncouragement and praise can come in many forms, and some ways are better for child development than others. Researchers at the University of Chicago who studied mother-child interactions (互相作用) found that the type of praise children receive affects their attitudes towards challenges later in life.Specifically, praise that focused on their behavior and the choices that kids made helped them deal with difficult experiences better five years later, compared with praise that focused more on the child himself, like “You’re a good boy.” The study, which appears in the journal Child Development, is the first major study of praise and child development done outside of a lab setting.“I t’s exciting to see it play out in the real world,” sa id Elizabeth Gunderson who ledthe study. “Praising the efforts, actions and work of kid s is going to be more beneficial in their long-term persistence and desire to be challenged and work hard in the future.”Such “process praise” includes comments such as “You worked really hard”, which emphasize a child’s actions. “Person praise” includes comments like “You’re so smart”, which focus on a child’s personal qualities. These distinctions (差别) aren’t new in the field of psychology, but exactly how they affect children’s development over the years hasn’t always been clear. As part of the study, the researchers visited the homes of more than 50 kids between the ages of 1 and 3, and filmed their daily interactions with their parents during 90-minute sessions. Five years later, the researchers followed up with the families, measuring the children’s attitudes to wards challenges and problem solving. The children who grew up with more process praise were more open to challenges. Though person praise didn’t seem to have any negative effect on the children, the study suggests that process praise teaches children that their talents and abilities can be developed and improved, while person praise sends the message that their abilities are fixed and therefore not easily changed.12. What can we learn from the first Paragraph?A. Researchers encourage more mother-child interactions.B. Different kinds of praise have different effects on children.C. Encouragement and praise have the same effects on children.D. Researchers have different attitudes to children’s development.13. AInternational travel has become popular. So, what can we do to enjoy ourselves and also leave a lasting, good impression on the people and places we visit? It goes without saying that we should respect local customs and beliefs. Therefore, a little research into the area where you are travelling may help you.Pay attention to how people greet each other. In Western countries such as America, it is common to shake hands and look at one another in the eyes when you are greeting someone. In other countries people prefer not to touch each other when they meet. For example, in Thailand, it is considered to be discourteous to put your hand on someone’s head, especially children’s. The head is considered sacred(神圣的) and by touching someone on their head you can prevent their spiritual growth.Everyone likes to relax when traveling. This can also include wearing more casual or different clothing. It is always good to keep in mind the local culture about dressing. For example, if you go to a country with strong religious beliefs such as those in the Middle East, all of above are banned. So, it is always good to dress modestly, such as in dark-colored clothes. The better you prepare the more fun you will have. If you are aware of the special foods and customs and have learnt some simple expressions, you might be lucky enough to find yourself invited to a local festival of gathering where you can experience something very special. Bymeeting some local people you could also discover some special attractions or places of interest.1.The author raises a question in Paragraph 1 to ________ .A.make readers answer itB.introduce the topic of the textC.help readers choose where to goD.prove the popularity of international travel2.According to the text, when greeting a man from America, ________ .A.staring at him should be avoidedB.you’d better wear dark-colored clothesC.you may shake hands firmly with himD.you are very likely to be invited to a gathering3.The underlined word “discourteous” in Paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to “________”.A. politeB. evilC. welcomeD. rudeBWhen Caleb Forbes got his first job at an advertising company at the age of 20, he thought he would be at the company for years. But after seven months he was bored. Soon after that, Forbes moved to London. He took four different jobs at three companies over the next five years. Forbes wanted a better job and higher pay---he was never quite satisfied.Welcome to the world of a job hopper. Forbes’s story isn’t unusual these days and such frequent movement from one job to the next will become more common. The main reason: the nature of employment is changing. There are a lot more contracts and part-time jobs or flexible employment. That leads to people having a greater number of jobs. What’s more, layoffs(解雇) and pay freezes(冻薪), among other things, have pushed people from one job to another. In some cases, a bad worldwide job market has limited opportunities for star employees, promoting them to seek new challenges at other companies. However, employers often think that if a person jumped from his last employer after a short period, he will likely do the same again --- there is a significant financial risk in hiring someone who leaves in short order. What’s more, moving from company to company frequently doesn’t mean workers are climbing the corporate ladder(公司官阶) faster. In 2005, Monika Hamori, a professor at Spain’sIE Business School, looked at CEOs at about 55 to see if those who moved around more frequently climbed the ladder faster. She found that executives who stayed with one company became CEOs after 23 years, while executives who changed companies many times became CEOs after 26 years. One reason: workers within the same organization tend to be promoted more frequently and be offered better jobs.4.How did Forbes feel about his first job at first?A. It was easy.B. It was boring.C. It was satisfying.D. It was dangerous.5. What does Paragraph 2 mainly talk about?A. The causes for job hopping.B. The popularity of job hopping.C. The consequences of job hopping.D. The measures against job hopping.6. Employers usually think those who left their former job in a short time ________.A. can do their new work betterB. are hard-working and easy-goingC. have more experiencesD. will quit their new job again after a short time7. Monika Hamori’s research showed that ________.A. old workers are more likely to move aroundB. young workers are more likely to be given better jobsC. the less someone moves around, the more he may be paidD. the more someone moves around, the more he may be paidCWhen people imagine a classroom, they usually think of older people teaching younger ones. But when it comes to learning about high-technology devices, the opposite can often be true. A training program called the 50 Plus Center in the eastern American city of Columbia, Maryland offers free technology classes to adults over 50.The training program also offers many other kinds of lectures from Qigong and Tai Chi to yoga and Latin jam dance. There are a lot of exercise programs including playing cards and physical exercises where many people just relax and spend some time together.Myra Stafford is 73 years old. She signed up for the class to learn how to use her iPad. She is learning quickly with the help of the young and she enjoys learning from them. She says she is more confident today than she was before. Working with young people makes her feel wonderful because they don’t make her feel that she is old or dumb.Eleven-year-old Zhion Perekins is a teacher of the technology class. He says some of the older adults know nothing about high-technology devices and they are very anxious, so patience is very important when working with them.He gains more than just social skills from teaching older residents. He has learned a lot on how to communicate with people. He used to be a shy person, but now he has become outgoing. There is a huge growing population over 60. The training program offers an opportunity for the old people to buy products online using high-technology devices. As senior citizens get more excited about what they want to buy, it is likely that they will go into the market and buy it, so that could lead to an increase in economy.8. Who usually act as the teachers in the 50 Plus Center?A. The young.B. Adults over 50.C. The older people.D. High-technology devices.9. What can we learn about the 50 Plus Center?A. It teaches the students social skills.B. There are a variety of activities for students.C. People have to pay for attending the classes.D. It is popular with both the young and the old.10. Which of the following is TRUE according to the text?A. Myra Stafford is not satisfied with the classes.B. The training program may do good to economy.C. Myra Stafford is too old to learn technology well.D. More and more senior citizens will attend the classes.11. What’s the best title for the text?A. A program called the 50 Plus CenterB. Teens teach the old about high-technologyC. How to help the senior citizens shop onlineD. The old learn to use high-technology devicesDThe cost of college textbooks has risen sharply from 2002 to 2014. As a result, students have to look for other less expensive options(选择) , such as renting books. Now, they find another way, that is, using textbooks on the Internet, uploaded by other students. It is hard to know how popular this practice will be, but many college students around the country are uploading their expensive college textbooks onto the Internet, so that other students can download them for free and avoid the big fees.A year ago, a student wrote a blog called Children of the Stars about a professor who insisted that students buy the newest edition of a specific sociology(社会学)book for more than $200 and didn’t allow them to purchase an older paperback(平装本) edition of the same book for $5. The student wrote, “The newest edition of the book is so expensive. Fortunately, we found the electronic one online, which is very cheap. This is why we downloaded. ” The blog is followed by a list of websites where people can download books.Curious about how varied the selection of books was and how easy it was to download them, V decided to do an experiment. The workers of it picked five typical and important courses of freshmen and tried downloading all these textbooks on the websites offered by the student who wrote Children of the Stars. They typed the titles of these textbooks into a computer, and found them immediately. Within minutes, they had four textbooks on their hard drive. It is illegal to upload or download copyrighted materials without permission, but students still do it due to its advantages. Besides, schools haven’t taken action to stop it.12. According to the passage, why do many students choose to download textbooks?A. Because it is lower in cost.B. Because it is required by their teachers.C. Because it can help them gain the latest knowledge.D. Because it can do less harm to the environment.13. What did find out from its experiment?A. Downloading textbooks was easy.B. Downloading textbooks was illegal.C. Downloading textbooks was expensive.D. Downloading textbooks was impossible.14. What’s the author’s attitude towards downloading textbooks?A. UninterestedB. DoubtfulC. ObjectiveD. Disappointed15.
