Book report of Famous Cases of Sherlock Holmes The book is composed of four stories-T he Solitary Cyclist, the Beryl Coronet, the Engineer’s thumb, The Red-headed League. The main character named Sherlock Holmes, he is a detective. He is a cautious man, and has a strong observation. In all cases, we can find that most of them were figured out by his observation. He is also good at inferring, even through a petty thing, he can discover something immense. He solved a lot of difficult cases for others through his strict reasoning. After so a lot of difficult cases were settled by him, he is famous in England, so, if someone has troubles that polices can’t solve, they will turn to him. Accompanied him is a doctor called Watson who is acted as a secretary of Holmes. He is not a very intelligent man, but he is willing to listen to Holmes’s word, so, he helped Holmes a lot.The novel is designed as Mr. Watson is the first person who tells us these stories. So it makes us thought that the book is a novel composed of many real stories. That shows that the intelligence of the author of this book-Conan Doyle-the father of Holmes. We gotta say that Conan Doyle is really a master that he can make readers think these cases really occur.Arthur Conan Doyle, the son of Charles Doyle and Mary Foley, was born in Edinburgh on 22nd May 1859.his father was an alcoholic and the family was always short of money. At school, Arthur developed a strong interest in the books written by Sir Walter Scott and Edgar Allan Poe. He studied at Edinburgh University and helped to fund his course by working as a surgeon on Hope, a 400 ton whaler on a seven month voyage to the Arctic. The following year he worked on Mayumba, a passenger ship bound for West Africa. On this voyage Conan Doyle nearly died of typhoid. On his return, Conan Doyle set up as a doctor in Southsea, a suburb of Portsmouth. With very few patients, Conan Doyle attempted to make money by writing detective stories. His main character, Sherlock Holmes, was based on Dr. Joseph Bell, a surgeon and criminal psychologist, who lectured at Edinburgh infirmary. In 1819 Conan Doyle published six Sherlock Holmes stories in the strand magazine. The following year he was paid £1,000 for a whole series on Sherlock Holmes. Conan Doyle really wanted to write historical novels like his hero, Sir Walter Scott, and in 1893 decided to kill off Sherlock Holmes in the story, The Final Problem. However, after coming under considerable pressure from his fans, he returned to write his bestknown detective story The Hound of the Baskervilles.Arthur Conan Doyle was died in 1934The Solitary Cyclist is a tragedy related to a female bicyclist. One day she came to Holmes’ home, said that she was followed by a stranger and asked Holmes helped her. At first, Holmes didn’t pay attention to it. But after his investigation, he found the truth and save the woman from the villain. The Beryl Coronet is about a father wronged his son of stealing his jewels. But the fact is that his son is the one who protect it and the real thief is his niece who trusts most. The Engineer’s Thumb tells us a story of a hydraulic engineer cheated by a colonel who is a real one make counterfeit money. He found the something strange by chance and is cut the thumb. With the help of Holmes, the police found that place, but unfortunately those guys have escaped. The Red-headed League writes a red-headed person happened to a lucky job that he can do nothing in four hours but gain 200dollors a year. But after two month he found the league disappeared. Actually, it is a fraud. It’s about a robbery, but is seen through by Holmes. These entire four stories are similar in a respect that is because of the observation that these cases can be worked out. I thought the reason why this novel is so successful is that the cases in itare very changeful. They can always go beyond our mind. Sometimes the case gets stuck in some troubles, and we thought the leading character will have nothing to do, but then it will get out of it. Sometimes we consider that the case will develop in the way which we imagine, but it happened in the opposite way. One of the brilliant aspects is that it is hard for us to judge who is the real bad person, what’s more funny is that the person who we guess is the bad person because of misunderstanding, and is the real good man who sacrifices himself for protecting something. All these sides show the superb the skill of the author and meanwhile, they become the charm of the novel. As far as I am concerned nothing is more admirable and surprising in the hero Sherlock Holmes than his profound knowledge which has certainly assisted him a lot when he was studying the case. According his stories, he has studied different kinds of newspaper, cigarettes, people’s footprints and other special things as well. Therefore, he seems to have the mastery of anything relevant to the cases he deals with. Expect for his brilliant knowledge, Holmes also specializes in arranging the facts in order and then finding the fact leading him to a great discovery or even the truth itself. From his speaking “Even mystery has an answer” we can readily shape the impression ofa man with great intelligence and inflexible will. In this case, after getting rid of unrelated facts Sherlock Holmes eventually grasped the clue and discovered the amazing fact.Needless to say, as a world-renowned masterpiece, Sherlock Holmes has attracted and is still charming numerous readers from all corners of the world and peoples all walks of life. The “Holmes series” has already set up a standard against which all the following detective fictions are measured. Sherlock Holmes, beyond all doubts, has become a name firmly rooted in people’s memories. Although Dr. Watson’s closing The Case of Sherlock Holmes in 1927 was a great pity to the readers, the discontinuance of the entire “Holmes series” may have actually added to the legendary stature of Sherlock Holmes.。
Book Report of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn Mark Twain's classic novel, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, is always be regarded as one of the greatest books of American literature and civilization. Nobel Prize-winning author Ernest Hemingway claimed in Green Hills of Africa (1935), that "All modern American literature comes from one book by Mark Twain called Huckleberry Finn. There was nothing before. There has been nothing as good since."The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, which was first published in 1885, is a sequel to Mark Twain's another fiction The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. Its theme is how to set the slaves free and how to come true one’s dreams. This is a social problem, so this novel influences American literature in American history, it can be said a revolution. The style of the book is quite simple. It is a local book which is written in the colloquial style, but it touches upon the human situation in a general, indeed universal way:humanitarianism ultimately triumphs. It tells a story which took place in the U.S.A. before the Civil War, along the Mississippi River, a boy named Huckleberry Finn who fled from his drunkard father, and encountered Jim on the island he hid. Jim was one of Miss Watson’slaves, and he was also running away from her. So Huck and Jim teamed up , floated on a raft down the Mississippi River together. The adventure started. During the course of their perilous and tough journey, Huck and Jim met diffculty, adventure, danger, and a group of people with various characters. And In the winding and adventurous journey, Huck and Jim built up a permanent friendship that broke down the barrier between the White and Black. In this novel, Huck is a motherless and homeless boy without education, sleeping in barrels, eating scraps and dressed in rags. He comes from the very lowest level of society. His father is a drunkard and treats Huck very bad. Huck don’t like civilized ways because he think they are personally restrictive and hard. After all, Huck is only a child, the world seems new to him. Everything he encounters is a crash for thought. Because of his background, however, he does more than just apply the rules that he has been taught—he creates his own rules. To some degree, it can be said that he is treacherous. But Huck is also a good and noble boy. All of his virtues come from his kind heart and his sense of humanity. On the way of floating in Mississippi river, Huck tries his best to help Jim and changes his prejudice about Black people. He concerns about the drunk man in the circus. He shows sympathy for the nieces of Peter Wilks and saves money for them. His sympathy even goes to those who are totally unworthy of his attention such as the stranded robbers and the king and the duke.Besides, Huck is smart, and has a sharp eye for details. Although he is uneducated and doesn’t always understand everything he sees, or its significance, nature teaches him a lot of things. Moreover, this quality helps him to avoid dangers and overcome difficulties during the travel. There w ere three important themes in this novel. One theme was “the pursuit of freedom”. Huck wanted to escape from the “civilized” society while Jim wanted to escape from the oppression and bondage of slaverythey. They were both seeking theirown freedom. The ot her theme was “growing”. Huck grew up and became mature from this journey. The journey was a voyage of growth in reality and morality, and a course of learning. On the personal and social level, he acquired knowledge and became a person of sound heart, and with democratic ideals. Jim’s growing means his progress of the idea and thought of himself. His pursuit was becoming the real human being. The third theme was the “racism and slavery”. It sets out the dissatisfaction of slavery. Mark Twain’s impressive p resentation of Negro slaves, such as Jim in the novel. Jim represents all that is good in man and Twain’s sympathy for the slaves and hatred towards the slave-society conventions are fully expressed in this novel. From them, readers could think more about life. Now, we come to a rather saddening fact. It may be reminded that back in the 1870’s, the slave law had not been abolished yet. In the range of the southern states, black people were still in slavery, waiting to be freed. Any slave who wanted to escape knew that it was impossible and a no-can-do. Mark Twain implies his disapproval of slavery gently, especially when Jim was caught as a runaway slave. Only until President Abraham Lincoln won the civil war, the slaves were finally free humans, with the ri ght to vote, and freely lived in “a country where all men are created equal”.There is no doubt that Mark Twain is one of the most celebrated persons in American literature. And his novel---- the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is also one of the best books in American literature. It influences American literature and history for a long time. If one wants to learn American history and literature, he or she should finish this novel. The Adventures of Huckleberry FinnThe Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is a great masterpiece of American writer Mark Twain. Mark Twain is one of the greatest American writers in the 19th century. He was one of the founder of American critical realism literature, and also the great master of the word famous short stories. His original name is Samuel Langhorne Clemens. During his life he enjoyed a international fame that has probably never been equaled by any other American author. William Faulkner even called Mark Twain" the father of American literature". William Dean Howells praised him as "the Lincoln of our literature,"The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is Twain’s representative work. Hemingway declared in his Green Hills of Africa (1935) that "All modern American literature comes from" Huck Finn, and regard it as "the best book we've had." However, this novel has been one of the most controversial and frequently banned books of American literature since its publication in 1884. During the course of one hundred years after its publication, this novel has still very famous, and frequently discussed all around the world. It proved to be one of the greatest books in the world literature. This novel can be regarded as an American initiation stories. “An initiation story may be said to show its young Protagonist experiencing a significant change of knowledge about the world or oneself,or a change of character,or of both, and thischange must Point or lead him towards an adult world. It may or may not contain some form of ritual, but it should give some evidence that the change is at least likely to have permanent effects.” (Mordecia Marcus). The Adventure of Huckleberry Finn is commonly acknowledged as the classic initiation story, because he experienced a lot of danger and difficulties during his journey, and learnt a lot of principles and rules of the world. He grown up and choose his own life style. The Adventure is also the same. I will mainly talk about the process of his growth in mind in this report. The first period, there is no happily family for him, for both home of his father and the adopted family were failed to give him tender love or right guide. They raise him all for the little boy’s fortune. Meanwhile, Huckleberry Fin is eager for free and unrestricted life. However she just wants to civilize him and made him live a respectable life. He felt rather depressed and stressful so that he even wished he was dead. During this period, he is mainly influenced by the south ideology which will affect his mind in his later life. The second period, finally he can’t bear his father and kin, he pretend to be dead and escape from home and go to an island. At this time, he know Jim, they have adventure together. At first, Huck was not willing escape with him, because he was a black. However the situation was very danger and he feels lonely. So he had to accept Jim. As a white child, born in south, he look down upon black and didn’t want to involved himself in helping a black slave escape. at this moment, his minds was not been liberated.Third, the period of confusion, is the most important part of the novel. He played jokes on Jim and hide him hat, sitting aside to laugh at him. He still didn’t recognize or accept him. As a white boy growing up in the society where slavery was widely practiced, Huck accepted the conventional ideas that the blacks were born to be inferior to the white. There is always a confliction in Huck’s mind. Sometimes he wanted to betray him and take him back to Miss Watson. However, when the hunters were coming, he protected Jim not to be hurt. In his later experience, they were deceived by the “king” and “duke”, what’s worse, they sell Jim to another owner. At this time, Huck decided to save him from the tragedy. We can see his humanity shining. But when they escape, Huck was hunt and can’t go much farther. Jim didn’t escape himself, instead, he risk to be caught and take care of Huck. He is also a kind-hearted man and has his own character. He is a positive role for Huck’s grown-up.The last period, Huck finally learned there are too much preposterous and hypocritical in the society, especially the racial discrimination towards the black. He understood that the black also have the humanity and right. They should be respect, loved. Now he was awake and grown up. He choose to live a free life. His heart has no conflict any more.By analyzing the text of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, My report focuses on the stages and progress of Huck’s initiation; how does Huck’s raft journey influence his initiation; his inner conflicts and growth. Through Huck’s adventures, Mark Twain shows us a vivid picture of the prewar American society. at the same time.Huck just a child, he can learn the hypocritical of the modern human, and the absurd of racial discrimination. A adult should learn more. So this novel has a great significant in the history. It is really worth to reading. The Adventures of Huckleberry FinnMark Twain (pseudonym of Samuel Langhorne Clemens, 1835-1910) was brought up in a small town of Hannibal, Missouri, on the Mississippi River. Owing to his father’s death, he had to leave school at the age of twelve. He was successively a printer’s apprentice, a tramp printer, a silver miner, a steamboat pilot on the Mississippi, and a frontier journalist in Nevada and California. All of these experiences gave him a wide knowledge of humanity. Mark Twain is a world-renowned literary giant and a gifted humorist. As a prolific writer, he makes great achievements in novels and short stories. However, what makes him popular are mainly his novels, in particular, his masterpiece, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. In 1884, he wrote this book, one of his most enduring books, it has not only delighted generations of readers but made history exciting. It has always been regarded as one of the great books of western civilization. The story happens along the Mississippi River. On both sides of the river there was unpopulated wilderness and a dense forest. Along the river floats a small raft, with two people on it. The protagonist of this story is Huckleberry Finn, a little uneducated white boy of about thirteen years old. He comes from the lowest level of society. His father is a poor town drunkard. The other boy Jim is an ignorant, uneducated black slave named Jim. The book tells the story of Jim’s escape from slavery, and, how Huckleberry Finn tries his best to help Jim. At the beginning, Huckleberry Finn cannot see Jim as a proper human being. He was told that that black are by nature lower than white, they are inferior animals. He always plays jokes on Jim. But, at the process of helping Jim to escape, Huckleberry Finn gradually changes his mind, his prejudice toward black people. At last, He treats him as a man and a close friend. Huckleberry Finn’s inner struggle between his sense of guilt in helping Jim to escape and his profound conviction that Jim is a human being was vividly described in the book.Underlying Twain's good humor is a dark subcurrent of antebellum cruelty and injustice that makes The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn a frequently funny book with a serious message. This is the first time that I read this book, when I finished it, was lost in contemplation. It takes me back to a children’s world. Finn’s unique personality, only the children can really understand. One the one hand, it’s a description of children’sworld, they are naughty, innocent, and they have their own dreams. Huckleberry Finn and the group of children always want to do something big. I love the protagonist very much .Even though he is only a small boy, he can do something that adults dare not to do .Huck is a kid who naturally loves freedom. He grew up homeless and had no chance to receive family, school and church education. He liked independent life, hated life around the stagnant and hypocritical courtesy. He did not go to church to pray, not wear dec ent clothes, and not learn from these “civilized” and the “gentle manner”. In the beginning, kindhearted widow Douglas, adopted the poor little Huck, and attempted to teach him and transformed him into a “civilized boy”. However, Huck soon tired of this de cent, and felt that the days of “too sulk” is simply all day long, “a pain”. So “I put on my body worn clothes and drill down to my empty sugar barrel by myself. Then I feel free and satisfied”.Huck distained the “civilized” society’s enlightenment, and e ven questioned the sacred religious tenets: If a person can pray to get what he wants, then why still the loss of Wayne’s by selling pork do not come back? Why the widow’s galactic disk which was stolen do not come back......”So he constantly played hooky, and ran into the forest to have some “fresh air”. Even together with the “noble” person, he felt “itch”.Huck finally could not stand the stagnant life and the enlightenment of civilization, and he escaped to seek for his ideal free life.On the other han d, it’s the author’s autography. Mark Twain’s three years’ life on the Mississippi left such a fond memory with him that he returned to the theme more than once in his writing career. Mark Twain------The half savage, tender, god-worshipping, believing boy, playing with rivers and man, ending on the Mississippi on the broad river that is the great artery flowing out of the heart of the land. It’s the miniature of real Mark Twain. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn tells a story about the United States before the civil war, around 1850, when the great Mississippi valley was still being settled. America was overwhelmed by violence and cruelty, but the virtues of “some simplicity, some innocence, some peace” still not disappeared. The machine and worship if money were on their way in, but the river-god, with its sunlight, space, uncrowned time, stillness, and danger,” had not been forgotten. The image of children belongs to be the comparatively special image among the i mage in literature. People usually treat ch ildren’s thought and behavior with themselv es eyes .Reading The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, which can let us pass the voiceof the children’s heart to hear the children’s reality, see a fresh and clear reality of chi ldren’s image-----exploration, resistance, escapism, desperate. In this book, serious problems are being discussed through the narration of a little illiterate boy. Such as, the loafers of the town of Brickville, amusing themselves by torturing animals, pouring kerosene on dogs and setting them on fire, democratic citizens quickly changed into violent mobs, ready to take the law into their own hands and lynch people, or to seize people and pour hot tar over them and ride them out of town on a rail, the fact that the blacks being sold in the market places like animals. The society at that time is in chaos. The people half wild and half civilized, many of them are vulgar and brutal. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is an exposure of the society at that time. Though a local and particular book, it touched upon the human situation in a general indeed “universal” way: Humanism ultimately triumphs. At that time, the social and intellectual climate of the country provided a stimulating milieu for the growth of local color fiction. The United Stated, still expanding westward, had not had time to solidify itself into a cohesive cultural whole. The local colorists formed an important part of the realistic movement. Mark Twain’s truthful depiction of the commonstrength to the fight for realism. The book has been banned from time to time, beginning with its publication in 1885, when it was deemed too subversive for children, until the late 20th century when, despite its compassionate attitude toward blacks and is violent denunciation of slavery, it has been branded racist because of Twain's use of dialect and "offensive" language. In addition to its message of tolerance and understanding, Huckleberry Finn continues to be read, talked about, and loved by readers of all ages because it's a cracking good coming-of-age story full of vivid characters and hilarious events, and because Twain's relentlessly clear-eyed angle of vision sees beneath the foibles and absurdities of humanity to the common ground that we all share. An Analysis of the Classical Initiation Novel----The Adventures ofHuckleberry FinnⅠ. IntroductionMark twain is one of the greatest writers in the 19th century, known as “the father of American culture”, and also named as “the Lincoln of American culture” byHowell. His masterpiece the adventures of Huckleberry Finn is even remarked as “the place where all modern American literature comes” and “the best book we have ever had” by Ernest Hemingway. There is no denying that it is still a very popular book nowadays, and many people are still studying it, while it’s difficult to search out an article discussing about its initiation theme of the youngster and concerning about the development of the youth’s characteristics. Therefore, it is not unnecessary to dig out the deeper meaning about the development of the youth in the curtain social background.Ⅱ. The definition of the initiation novelThe initiation novel begins at the 18th century, first in Germany, and then prevails in Europe, in the 19th century, it comes to America. Though many scholars are trying to definite it, the best definition of it is still not established. Among all the definitions now we have, Marks’ is most accepted:the initiation novel is to show after suffering a lot of traumas both in physical and mental, the young hero changes his previous world view, or transfigures his disposition, or he changes the both; this change makes him get rid of his innocent childhood, and will finally leads him to the complicated adult society.Since there are a mount of initiation novels in American literature, the initiation novel must play a very important role in its history, from Nathaniel Hawthorne’s the Scarlet Letter and Young Mr. Brown to Herman Melville’s Moby Dick, and when it comes to mark twain, it comes to it’s a pex, twain’s two initiation novels the Adventures of Tom Sawyer and the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn could say clearly for it.In the initiation novels, although the people and the stories may be very different, the formations are similar: the story always starts with the young hero’s sufferings or observations of the villainy, and losing his innocence; these experiences would inevitably shock his little heart, so the youth could transform from a naïve child to an adaptable and mature man. Huck is not an exceptional one.Ⅲ.An Analysis of Huck’s initiation process in the novelHuck is a typical American boy, he is clever and naughty, seeming impolitely and rude, in fact, full of innocence and kindness. At the beginning of the novel, he adopted by the widow Douglas, a kind but stifling woman who lives with her sister, the self-righteous Miss Watson. There he has to obey all kinds of rules and doctrines, and get education, and learn how to be a good person, and also how to live a graceful life. However, this life is just like a fetter for Huck’s unconstraint heart and longing for freedom’s mind. Besides, his drunkard father comes into being again and kidnapped him and treats him violently. Altogether, the loneliness, oppression, his father’s persecution, and his yearning for freedom make him at last choose to run away from the so-called “civilized society”, and start his adventures in the society, and therefore start his developments in his heart. On his way for running away, Huck happens to meet Jim------one of Miss Waston’s slaves, running away from Miss Watson. Huck determined to help Jim to get freedom. However, during the course of saving Jim, Huck experiences vehement mental clash, his thoughts and heart get a sublimation during the process, he abandons the traditional social prejudices, and turns to more mature. Although at the very beginning, Huck promises not to blow upon Jim, he is not completely sure for his decision. He doesn’t treat Jim as the person who has the equal rights as himself; he does n’t respect Jim and always laughs at Jim’s thoughts, and frequently plays jokes on Jim. In the chapter 15, they two go astray on the river, in order to find Huck; Jim almost risks his life, while Huck deceives Jim that’s just a dream. When Jim becomes sober, he, as an equal person as Huck, interrogates Huck seriously, and criticizes Huck’s immoderate joke strictly, while at the same time, with a deep affection. At that time, Huck realizes his fault: “This really makes me feel pretty despicable, I wish with the mouth to kiss his feet”. Finally, he nerves himself to apologize to Jim. Till then begins Huck’s development of characteristics and mind. He realizes the position and respects of a man, and gets to know that the black Jim is as the same as the white, he is equal with him, and should share the same rights with him.Huck’s deeper understanding of the people and the society happens after twomuch more tortuous mental sufferings. In the chapter 16, when Jim feels hilarious for he thoughts he would soon be free when they reach the free town, while Huck starts his heart’s contradiction and mental clash again. Because of his background, Huck thought that slavery is good and right, and he is also taught that the black is the property of the white and that run-away slaves should be reported, and helping a slave to run away is even flagitious. Thus, when he knows that Jim will soon get freedom with his own help, he feels very anxious, and also feels sorry for kindhearted Miss Watson. So he decides to report Jim when they get on board. However, when Huck sees Jim’s happy face and recalls his kindness, Huck hesitates again; he gets into a dilemma, and doesn’t know what to do. At this crucial time, there come two men looking for the runaway slave, and they want to examine Huck’s raft, but Huck plays a trick on them, and let them believe on the raft lies a patient suffering from smallpox, thus protecting Jim. Here Huck strides a big step to cut through social prejudices and social discriminations, and also a big step to his moral and mental mature.Till the chapter 31, Huck completely breaks up with the slavery and traditional social prejudices. Until then, the conflict about if to report Jim raise to the climax, and his conscience tells him that “helping the black to run away must get into the eighteenth layer hell”. Therefore, he writes to Miss Watson, and tells her where Jim is. Huck again remembers his raft travel with Jim, they take care of each other and share both the happiness and sorrow, Jim is that loyal, kindhearted, and honest, and he regards Huck as the only friend, and then Huck realizes that Jim is not only an equal person as himself but also his best friend. So Huck’s heart tells him that he should not report Jim, and what he should do is to help Jim to get freedom. At last, Huck’s heart defeats his conscience, and he says: “well, then, hell is hell!”, and then he tears up the letter. Just as Mark Twain’s own comment “in this book, a sound mind and deformity conscience produce clash, conscience suffered a defeat”. “Huck’s tearing letter”shows that Huck has utterly ascended the huge gap of the racialism, and defeated the social bias. According to his own heart, Huck makes the right decision and choice, and therefore becomes mature in both moral and mental.Huck’s initiation process also shows in his gradual recognition on society and humanism. During the development of Huck’s disposition, he recognizes himself more and more clear, and gradually understands his real pursuit. To start with, Huck seems like a loyal attendant to Tom whatever he does he wants to does like Tom, he always submits to Tom, and has no confidence in himself, and also holds negative believes on himself. However, with the story’s happening, Huck gradually gets rid of Tom’s influence, and begins to oppugn Tom’s deeds, and believes Tom’s conducts are unpractical. After experiencing lots of adventures and risks, Huck learns how to face the hardship alone, and knows how to solve problems. He gradually comprehends his ability, and find back his confidence and ego. In the chapter 33, in spite of Tom’s wrong thoughts about him, Huck makes his mind to save Jim out. He says to Tom: “I know what you want to say. You should say it is despicable thing, but what's the matter? I must steal him out”. Moreover, on the issue about how to save Jim, Huck doesn’t follow Tom any more. He has his own thoughts then. He knows that he has the same rights, ability, and wisdom as Tom. Huck has already become a independent and self-assured person. What’s more, the novel’s ending ---Huck refuses to be Sally aunt’s godson, forms a fierce contrast with the novel’s very beginning that Huck returns to the widow’s home under Tom’s persuade.Ⅳ. ConclusionFrom above, it is clear to see that during the raft adventures with Jim, Huck, from an innocent, happy, ignorant follower, becomes a brave, independent, confident, responsible, and intelligent person. The process of finding himself is, however, not smooth at all, but full of contradictions, puzzles, and conflicts. His shaping process can represent all the human beings’development of their nature and individual characteristics. There’s no denying that initiation process is no favoring thing at all. It consists of many kinds of mental clashes, heart’s maturing and the understanding of the society and human nature. Book Report on The Death of The MothAuthor:Virginia Wolf is an English novelist, critic, and essayist. She is generally regarded as one of the pioneers of women`s liberation from patriarchy. At the same time, she is one of the foremost modernists of the twentieth century.During the interwar period,Wolf was a significant figure in London Literary society and a central figure in the influential Bloomsbury group of intellectuals. Her most famous works include Mrs.Dalloway,To the Lighthouse,Orlanedo:A Biography,A Room of One`s Own,and essay “The Death of a Moth”.Wolf suffered from several bouts of mental illness throughout her life, thought to have been the result of bipolar disorder, and committed suicide by drowning in 1941 at the age of 59.Basic information:“The Death of a Moth” is published in 1942,it was one year after Wolf`s suicide. It is an essay of six paragraphs,so it is pretty short. It has altogether 1183 words. The essay itself is concise in language and very profound in meaning.Essay Analysis:In the first paragraph,Wolf introduced to us a day moth. When we talk about moth,we often associate with the night time, with shadowy places. The first paragraph is dealing with a day moth. She said this mothon the window shows a contented attitude towards life.According to Wolf, the day moths are hybrid creatures, neither gay like butterflies nor sombre like their own species, but this particular day moth seems quite contended with life. The rest of the article tells the reason, because it was a pleasant morning in mid September, mild benignant, yet with a keener breath than that of the summer months,Outside the windows, the author wrote “You see the fields after the harvest were being plowed ,and fields at the down beyond vigour came rolling in’’.Finally, she gave us a very vivid description of some birds flying off and down, and these birds, she called the rooks, “The rooks too were keeping one of their annual festivities”.The rooks all over in sudden in thousands flew off the tree tops, into the air,you feel like a big net with thousands of black knots were cast off into the air,the very next minute, this net comes back into the tree tops, all of the birds all of a sudden flew off the trees and up into the air,the net is in the sky again. After a while, the birds all settle back into the trees. The vivid description of the birds is life, thousands of birds are doing the same thing in perfect coordination, that illustrate life and vigour. The author said this kind of energy inspired all these birds,is also inspiring the little moth on the window. The moth is vigourious, lovely. It has clearly absorbed a kind of energy---the nature offers to the rest of the world. The energy inspired everything. The little moth moved from this corner to that corner,it is littlebut lively. Finally, the writer used the word “dancing”to describe the moth. “The moth was fluttering, the moth was flying, and finally the moth was dancing”.The energy, the vigour and life is inside the moth. But however, the moth died ,the moth slipped down from the wooden ledge and fell after seven attempts of flying, his body got stiff before death came, the little creature`s life is lost.Main idea:The essay doesn`t just describe the moth`s life, vigour and death, but also the author`s feelings as an observer, spectator and storyteller. The author expressed her pity for this insignificant creature, and she also expresses her fear for something,in may be death. She also expresses her admiration to the little moth. She has pity for the moth`s tininess, she said the moth shows enormous energy and that is something marvelous. We will find the varieties of life is so interesting in nature, but being a small moth,it plays a so small part, that is pathetic. The author expressed her fear to death. She said the moth`s tiny legs against an oncoming doom, the dom submerged an entire city, and masses of human beings, and nothing had any chance against the most great power. In front of the power of death, human beings are like the little tiny moth, has no power to against death, only struggling with tiny legs. She expressed her admiration to moth`s attitude. At first, the moth feel contented to life, and then when the moth is about to die,he showed anattitude of composedness, and he had no complaining toward death. She believes that is right attitude toward death because death is stronger than us all.A man should be like a moth, that he should advocate the attitude a moth has, when man are given birth,he grow up with a contented and grateful attitude toward life, when man wanders in death`s shade,he should accept death calmly and shouldn`t complain about life.In the essay, she praised the beauty of life, but at the same time, she feel pity for life`s shortness and tininess.Life is short, when death came at its way, life is helpless. And she seems to say,she herself like other human beings, should prepare to meet death, quietly, and in composual when it comes. And this essay seems to predict her tendency of committing suicide, which is really sad.。

He was a successful writer whose works include science fiction stories, plays, romances, poetry, non-fiction and historical novels.Conan Doyle is famous because of his stories about Sherlock Holmes. The famous Japanese comic Detective Conan uses the name of his. Many stories of Holmes’ had been recomposed into movies and TV series, just like BBC’s Sherlock. As you can see, Holmes is famous, that make Conan Doyle very famous too.A summary of The Hound of the BaskervillesDr. Mortimer tells Sherlock Holmes and Watson the legend about the Hound of the Baskervilles. A hundred years ago, a very large hound was seen on lonely Dart moor. It was standing over the dead bodies of the evil Hugo Baskerville, and a young girl. Now, Sir Charles Baskerville, who had a weak heart, has died.Dr. Mortimer tells Holmes that he saw the footprints of a large dog near the body. Holmes think Sir Charles was frightened by something on the moor, and that he died running away from it. Sir Henry Baskerville, Sir Charles’s heir, tells Holmes that he has been sent a mysterious letter saying “if you value your life, keep away from the moor.” He also has an old boot stolen.Watson travels to Baskerville Hall with Sir Henry and Dr. Mortimer. A soldier tells them a murderer has escaped from prison, and is probably hiding on the moor. Watson meets Stapleton. He has a beautiful sister who, thinking Watson is Sir Henry; warm him to leave at once. When Sir Henry meets Miss Stapleton, he likes her very much. Her brother is strangely displeased about this. Barrymore and his wife, servants at Baskerville Hall, admit to Sir Henry that they are feeding the escaped prisoner, Selden, because he is the brother of Mrs. Barrymore. Laura Lyons had arranged to meet Sir Charles in Yew Alley the night he died. She is in love with Stapleton, who persuaded her not to go.Laura’s father, Mr. Frankland, tells Watson he has seen a boy taking food to someone on the moor. Watson finds the hut where the man is staying – it is Holmes! He tells Watson that Stapleton’s sister is really is wife, and that Stapleton is theenemy. They hear a cry; Selden has been killed by a hound. It thought Selden was Sir Henry, because he was wearing Sir Henry’s old clothes. The hound recognized their smell from the boot Stapleton has stolen.Holmes realized that Stapleton is the next heir to the Baskerville fortune, and plans to trap him. Laura Lyons, hearing that Stapleton is married, tells Holmes that Stapleton made her arrange to meet Sir Charles near the moor on the night of his death. The detective Lestrade arrives. He Holmes and Watson see a large, fierce hound, with blue phosphorous flames, attack Sir Henry on the moor. Holmes shoots it. Stapleton dies falling into a bog-hole. Holmes explains that Stapleton used the legend of the Hound of the Baskervilles to scare Sir Charles to death. He then tried to kill Sir Henry, so that he could claim the Baskerville fortune. He was really the son of Sir Rodger Baskerville. The writing background of The Hound of the Baskervilles The Hound of the Baskervilles was written and published in 1901 and 1902. It was said by the Conan Doyle that he wasinfluenced by the Frey Robinson’s China West.Characters analysis of The Hound of the Baskervilles Shylock Holmes is created by the novelist Conan Doyle's detective, GM has now become the world's best detectives were synonymous! He not only cool-headed Holmes, keen observation, reasoning ability and also no one can. (In addition, he's also very clever fencing) he usually leisurely pace in Baker Street, 211, the B room, Smoking Bucket awaiting commissioned by the door. But once received the case, he would immediately become a dog chasing a wolf, began locking the target and the entire incident boils, layers of filtration, until the final truth!Sherlock Holmes is a fictional character of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, which first appeared in publication in 1887. He is the creation of Scottish-born author and physician Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. A brilliant London-based consulting detective, Holmes is famous for his intellectual prowess, and is renowned for his skillful use of "deductive reasoning" while using adductive reasoning (inference to the best explanation) and astute observation to solve difficult cases.Conan Doyle wrote four novels and fifty-six short storiesthat featured Holmes. All but four stories are narrated by Holmes's friend and biographer, Dr. John H. Watson; two are narrated by Sherlock Holmes himself, and two others are written in the third person. The first two stories, short novels, appeared in Beeton's Christmas Annual for 1887 and Lippincott's Monthly Magazine in 1890, respectively. The character grew tremendously in popularity with the beginning of the first series of short stories in The Strand Magazine in 1891; further series of short stories and two serialised novels appeared until 1927. The stories cover a period from around 1878 up to 1907, with a final case in 1914.Conan Doyle, when asked if there was a real Sherlock Holmes, always maintained that Holmes was inspired by Dr. Joseph Bell, for whom Doyle had worked as a clerk at the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. Like Sherlock Holmes, Bell was noted for drawing large conclusions from the smallest observations. Dr. Bell was also interested in crime and assisted the police in solving a few cases. In my opinion, Holmes is famous not only because his abilities in solving cases, also because he is like a real man, a man with thoughts and motions. We believe that he really lives in 221B, Baker Street. Holmes is the best detective to us.My opinions about The Hound of the BaskervillesI like this book very much. There are some reasons.First, I like Holmes’s stories very much. I also very admire his calmness, smart and super ability of logical reasoning.Second, the author wrote this story very well. When I’m reading, I’m feeling I’m at Baskerville Hall or Dart moor with Holmes and Watson. And I really feel thrilled.Third, also the very important one, I like reading very much, which can broaden our horizon and enlarge our knowledge. As for detective stories, they are always logical and beautiful. Therefore I enjoy them very much.ConclusionDuring my reading, I enjoy the story very much. Also, I learned many useful grammar points and expressions. Some sentences are also very interesting. And, I’ve learned a little bit of Sherlock Holmes’s ability. I don’t hope I can get the right answer to the case, but I think calm and thinking are very important during dealing with problems. We can use them not only in solving cases but in every where. Hope everybody be calm and hope everyone lead a happy life!。

The Hound of the Baskervilles by Arthur Conan Doyle■1 The Case BeginsThe September sun was shining brightly into the win-dows of 221B Baker Street, and London was enjoying a beautiful late summer.I had finished my breakfast and was reading the newspaper. As usual,Holmes had got up late, and was still eating. We were expecting a visitor at half past ten,and I wondered whether Holmes would finish his breakfast be-fore our visitor arrived.Holmes was in no hurry. He was reading once again a letter he had received three days ago.It was from Dr James Mortimer, who asked for an appointment with Holmes.'Well,Watson,'Holmes said to me,'I'm afraid that a doc-tor from Devonshire won't bring us anything of real interest. His letter doesn't tell us anything about his business though he says it's very important.I hope we can help him.'At exactly half past ten there was a knock on our front door.'Good,'said Holmes.'Dr Mortimer is clearly a man who will not waste our time.'We stood up as our visitor was brought into the room.'Good morning, gentlemen,'he said.'I'm Dr James Mor-timer,from Grimpen in Devonshire, and I think you must be Mr Sherlock Holmes.'He shook hands with Holmes, who said:'How do you do,Dr Mortimer?May I introduce my good friend,Dr John Watson, who helps me with my cases.I hope you will allow him to listen to our conversation.''Of course,'said Mortimer,as he turned to me and shook hands.'I need your help very badly,Mr Holmes. If it will be useful for Dr Watson to hear what I have to say, please let him stay and listen.'Mortimer did not look like a country doctor. He was very tall and thin.He had a long thin nose. His grey eyes were bright, and he wore gold glasses. His coat and trousers were old and worn. His face was young, but his shoulders were bent like an old man's and his head was pushed forward. He took some pa-pers from his pocket, and said:'Mr Holmes,I need your help and advice.Something very strange and frightening has been happening.''Sit down,Dr Mortimer,'said Holmes,'and tell us your problem.I'll help you if I can.'■2 The Baskerville Papers'These papers were given to me by Sir Charles Baskerville,'said Dr Mortimer.'He asked me to take good care of them. You may remember that Sir Charles died suddenly three months ago.His death caused much excite-ment in Devonshire, the county where Baskerville Hall is.Sir Charles was a sensible man,but he believed the story which is told in these papers.'Dr Mortimer went on:'The story is about the Baskerville family.I have come to see you because I need your help.I think that something terrible is going to happen in the next twenty-four hours. But you can't help me unless you know the story in these papers.May I read them to you?''Please continue,Dr Mortimer,'said Holmes, and sat back in his chair with his eyes shut.Mortimer began to read in his high, rather strange, voice:I,William Baskerville, write this for my sons in the year 1742.My father told me about the Hound of the Baskervilles. He told me when it was first seen, and I be- lieve his story was true.I want you,my sons,to read this story carefully.I want you to know that God punishes those who do evil. But never forget that He will forgive those who are sorry for any evil they have done.Over a hundred years ago,in 1640,the head of the Baskerville family was Sir Hugo Baskerville. He was a wild and evil man.He was cruel and enjoyed hurting peo-ple.Sir Hugo fell in love with the daughter of a farmer who was a neighbor of his.The young woman was afraid of the evil Hugo, and avoided him.One day,Hugo heard that her father and brothers were away.He knew that she would be alone. So he rode to the farm with five or six of his evil friends. They made the girl go back to Baskerville Hall with them, and locked her in a room upstairs. Then they sat down in the great dining hall to drink. As usual, they drank bottle after bottle and soon they began to sing and laugh and shout evil words. The girl upstairs, who was already very frightened, felt desperate when she heard the terrible things they were shouting. So she did a very brave thing. She opened the window, climbed out of the room and down the ivy on the wall. Then she started to run across the moor towards her home.A little while later,Hugo left his friends and went up- stairs to the room to take her some food and drink. When he found an open window and an empty room,he behaved like a man who was mad.He ran down the stairs. He screamed that he would give himselfto the Devil if he caught the girl before she reached home. Some of Hugo's drunken friends told him to let the hounds chase her,and so he ran from the house and unlocked the dogs. Then he jumped onto his black horse, and rode off over the moor with the hounds running and crying around him.Hugo's friends fetched their horses and followed him. There were thirteen of them. After a mile or two they passed an old farmer and asked him if he had seen Sir Hugo and the hounds. The man looked half mad with fear and spoke with difficulty. He said that he had seen the girl and the hounds running close behind her.Sir Hugo had been riding just behind the hounds.'But I have seen more than that,'the old man said.'Behind Sir Hugo I saw a huge and terrible hound running silently.May God keep me safe from that hound of hell.'The thirteen men laughed at the old man and rode on.But their laughter soon stopped when they saw Sir Hugo's horse running wildly towards them without a rider. The thirteen men moved closer together as they rode on.They were suddenly afraid.Over the moor they went until,at last, they caught up with the hounds.Everyone in the county knew that the Baskerville hounds were brave and strong. But now they were stand- ing at the head of a deep valley in the moor with their ears and tails down. They were very frightened.Hugo's friends stopped. Most of them would not go on,but three were brave enough to go down into the valley. The valley had a wide flat floor. In the middle of the flat ground stood two great stones. They had stood there for thousands of years. The moon was shining brightly on the great stones, and between them,on the flat ground, lay the girl. She had fallen there, dead of fear and exhaus- tion.Sir Hugo's body was lying near her.But it was not the sight of Sir Hugo or the girl that filled the men with fear.It was the sight of the huge animal that was standing over Sir Hugo. Its teeth were at his throat. It was a great black creature that looked like a hound. But it was larger than any hound they had ever seen.As they watched,it tore out Hugo Baskerville's throat. Then it turned towards them. Its eyes were burning brightly. Its body shone with a strange light.Blood ran from its mouth. The men screamed and kicked their horses. They rode back up the valley as fast as they could go.Later that night one died from the horror he had seen. The other two were mad for the rest of their lives. That was the first time the Hound appeared,my sons.It has been seen many times since then, and many of the Baskervilles have died in strange and terrible ways.Be- cause of this I warn you not to cross the moors at night. The Devil finds it easy to do his work when the world is dark.■3 How Sir Charles DiedWhen Dr Mortimer had finished reading this strange story,he looked across at Sherlock Holmes.Holmes looked bored.'Did you find the story interesting?'asked Dr Mortimer.'It may interest a collector of stories to frighten children,' said Holmes.Dr Mortimer took a newspaper from another pocket.'Now,Mr Holmes, let me read you something which was written only three months ago.It is from the Devonshire County Newspaper, and it is about the death of Sir Charles Baskerville.'Holmes looked more interested.Dr Mortimer began to read:The sudden death of Sir Charles Baskerville has caused great sadness in the county.Although he had lived at Baskerville Hall for only two years, everyone liked him.Sir Charles had lived abroad and made his money there. He came back to spend his fortune on repairing Baskerville Hall and its farms and villages,as the buildings and lands were in very poor condition. He was a friendly and generous man,who gave freely to the poor. The official report of his death does not explain every-thing that happened. However,it does show that there was no question of murder.Sir Charles died from natural causes, and the strange stories people are telling about his death are not true. His friend and doctor,Dr James Mor-timer,said that Sir Charles'heart had been weak for some time. The facts are simple.Every night before going to bed,Sir Charles went for a walk in the gardens of Baskerville Hall. His favourite walk was down a path between two hedges of yew trees, the famous Yew Alley of Baskerville Hall.On the night of 4th June he went out for his walk to think and to smoke his usual cigar.Sir Charles was going to London on the next day,and Barrymore, his butler, was packing his suitcases.By mid- night Barrymore was worried that Sir Charles had not re-turned,so he went to look for him.He found the door of the Hall open. The day had been rainy and wet so Barry-more saw the prints left by Sir Charles'shoes as he had walked down the Alley.Half way down the Alleyis a gate, which leads to the moor. There were signs that Sir Charles had stood there for some time.Barrymore fol-lowed the footprints to the far end of the Alley. And there he found Sir Charles'body.Barrymore reported something interesting about the footprints. He said that they changed between the moor gate and the end of the Alley. As far as the moor gate there was a whole footprint for each of Sir Charles'steps. After he passed the gate, only toe prints could be seen.Barrymore thought that Sir Charles had walked on his toes.A man called Murphy, who buys and sells horses, was not far away at the time of Sir Charles'death. He had been drinking a lot of beer, but he says he heard cries. He is not sure where they came from.Dr Mortimer was called to look at Sir Charles'body. There were no signs that Sir Charles had been murdered, but Dr Mortimer did not recognize his friend's face. The whole shape of it was changed. However, this often hap-pens with deaths which are caused by weak hearts. When Dr Mortimer looked at the body,he found that this was,in fact, what had happened.Sir Charles'weak heart had failed, and this had caused his death.Everyone hopes that the new head of the Baskerville family will move quickly into the Hall.Sir Charles good work must go on.The new head of the Baskerville family will be Sir Hen- ry Baskerville,if he is still alive and if the lawyers can find him.He is the son of Sir Charles Baskerville's younger brother, who died some years ago.The young man has been living in the USA.The Baskerville lawyers are trying to contact him to tell him about his good fortune.Dr Mortimer put the newspaper back into his pocket.'Those are the official facts about the death of Sir Charles. They are the facts that everyone knows,Mr Holmes,'he said.'Thank you for informing me about this interesting case,'Holmes said.'I read about it at the time, but I heard none of the details. The newspaper gives the facts that everybody knows. Now I want you to tell me all the other facts that you know. What do you know about the strange stories?''I haven't told anyone these other facts,'said Dr Mortimer.'I am a man of science,as you know.I have always believed that there are sensible explanations for everything.I didn't want to say anything that could stop Sir Henry from coming to live at the Hall. But I will tell you tile details that were not in the report.''In the months before his death,'Dr Mortimer went on,'Sir Charles was a very worried man.He was near to breaking down.He believed the story of the Hound of the Baskervilles. He refused to go out at night. He often asked me whether I had seen any strange animal or heard the cry of a hound on the moor at night. He always got very excited when he asked this question.'I remember driving up to the Hall one evening about three weeks before he died.He was standing at the door.I went up to him,and saw him staring at something behind me.There was a look of horror on his face.I turned quickly and saw something moving between the trees. It looked like a small black cow.He was so frightened that I went to look for the animal. It had disappeared but Sir Charles was very worried.I stayed with him all the evening. It was then he gave me the old papers I have read to you. What I saw that evening may be im- portant when you consider what happened on the night of his death.'When Barrymore, the butler, found Sir Charles'body,he sent someone to fetch me.I checked all the facts.I have just read them to you,and they are all true.'But Barrymore said one thing that was not true.He said that there were no other prints on the ground around the body.He did not notice any.But I did. They were not close to the body, but they were fresh and clear.''Footprints?'asked Holmes.'Yes.Footprints,'said Mortimer.'A man's or a woman's?'asked Holmes.Dr Mortimer looked at us strangely for a moment. His voice became a whisper as he answered:'Mr Holmes, they were the footprints of a huge hound!'■4 The ProblemIfelt a moment of fear as Mortimer spoke these words.Holmes sat forward in his excitement, and his eyes showed he was very interested indeed.'Why did nobody else see these footprints?'he asked.'The footprints were about twenty metres from the body, and nobody thought of looking so far away,'Mortimer replied.'Are there many sheep dogs on the moor?'asked Holmes.'Yes,but this was no sheep dog.The footprints were very large indeed—enormous,'Mortimer answered.'But it had not gone near the body?''No.''What kind of night was it?'Holmes asked.'It was wet and cold, though it wasn't actually raining.''Describe the Alley to me.''The Alley is a path between two long yew hedges. The hedges are small trees that were planted very close together. They are about four metres high. The distance between the two yew hedges is about seven metres.Down the middle is a path of small stones. The path is about three metres wide, with grass on each side of it.''I understand there is a gate through the hedge in one place,'said Holmes.'Yes,there is a small gate, which leads to the moor.''Is there any other opening through the hedge?''No.''So you can enter or leave the Yew Alley only from the Hall,or through the moor gate?'asked Holmes.'There is a way out through a summer house at the far end.''Had Sir Charles reached the summer house?''No.He lay about fifty metres from it,'said Mortimer.'Now,Dr Mortimer, this is important. You say that the footprints you saw were on the path and not on the grass?''No footprints could show on the grass,'said Mortimer.'Were they on the same side of the path as the moor gate?''Yes.They were.''I find that very interesting indeed.Another question:was the moor gate closed?''Yes.It was closed and locked.''How high is it?'asked Holmes.'It is just over a metre high.''Then anyone could climb over it?''Yes.''What prints did you see by the moor gate?''Sir Charles seems to have stood there for five or ten min-utes,'said Mortimer.'I know that because his cigar had burned down and the ash had dropped twice off the end of it.''Excellent,'said Holmes.'This man is a very good detective,Watson.''Sir Charles had left his footprints all over that little bit of the path where he was standing.I couldn't see any other prints.'Sherlock Holmes hit his knee with his hand angrily.'I like to look closely at these things myself,'he said.'Oh,Dr Mortimer, why didn't you call me immediately?''Mr Holmes, the best detective in the world can't help with some things,'said Mortimer.'You mean things that are outside the laws of nature—su- pernatural things?'asked Holmes.'I didn't say so exactly,'replied Mortimer.'But since Sir Charles died,I have heard about a number of things that seem to be supernatural.Several people have seen an animal on the moor that looks like an enormous hound. They all agree that it was a huge creature, which shone with a strange light like a ghost.I have questioned these people carefully. They are all sensible people. They all tell the same story.Although they have only seen the creature far away,it is exactly like the hell- hound of the Baskerville story. The people are very frightened, and only the bravest man will cross the moor at night.''And you,a man of science, believe that the creature is supernatural—something from another world?'asked Holmes.'I don't know what to believe,'said Dr Mortimer.'But you must agree that the footprints were made by a liv- ing creature, not a ghost?''When the hound first appeared two hundred and fifty years ago,it was real enough to tear out Sir Hugo's throat…but it was a supernatural hell-hound,'said Dr Mortimer.'If you think that Sir Charles' death was caused by some-thing supernatural,my detective work can't help you,'saidHolmes, rather coldly.'Perhaps,'said Mortimer.'But you can help me by advis- ing me what to do for Sir Henry Baskerville. He arrives in Lon-don by train in exactly,'Dr Mortimer looked at his watch,'one hour and a quarter.''Sir Henry is now head of the Baskerville family?'asked Holmes.'Yes,'said Dr Mortimer.'He is the last of the Baskervilles. The family lawyers contacted him in the USA.He has come to England immediately by ship.He landed this morning. Now,Mr Holmes, what do you advise me to do with him?' 'Why should he not go to the family home?'asked Holmes.'Because so many Baskervilles who go there die horrible deaths. But Sir Charles'good work must go on.If it doesn't,all the people on the Baskerville lands will be much poorer. If the Baskerville family leaves the Hall, that is what will happen.I don't know what to do.That is why I came to you for advice.'Holmes though for a little while. Then he said:'You think it is too dangerous for any Baskerville to live at the Hall because of this supernatural hell-hound.Well,I think you should go and meet Sir Henry Baskerville.Say nothing to him about this.I shall give you my advice in twenty-four hours. At ten o'clock tomorrow morning,Dr Mortimer,I would like you to bring Sir Henry Baskerville here.'Dr Mortimer got up from his chair. As he was leaving the room,Holmes said:'One more question,Dr Mortimer. You said that before Sir Charles'death several people saw this strange creature on the moor?''Three people did,'said Mortimer.'Did anyone see it after the death?''I haven't heard of anyone.''Thank you,Dr Mortimer.Good morning.'After Mortimer had left us,Holmes sat down in his chair. He looked pleased. He always looked pleased when a case interest -ed him.I knew that he needed to be alone to think about all that he had heard.I went out for the day,and came back to find the room full of thick smoke from Holmes'pipe.'What do you think of this case?'I asked him.'It is hard to say.Take, for example, the change in the foot-prints.Did Sir Charles walk on his toes down the Alley?Only a stupid person is likely to believe that. The truth is he was run-ning—running for his life.He ran until his heart stopped and he fell dead.''What was he running from?'I asked.'That is the difficult question,'said Holmes.'I think he was mad with fear before he began to run.He didn't know what he was doing. That explains why he ran away from the house instead of towards it.He was running away from help. The next question:who was he waiting for that night? And why was he waiting in the Yew Alley and not in the house?''You think he was waiting for someone?''Sir Charles was old and unwell. We can understand why he took a walk each evening. But why did he stand in the cold,on wet ground, for five or ten minutes?Dr Mortimer cleverly noted the cigar ash,so we know how long Sir Charles stood there. We know that he kept away from the moor,so it's un-likely that he waited at the moor gate every evening.I am be-ginning to understand some things,Watson. But I'll think no more about it until we meet Dr Mortimer and Sir Henry Baskerville in the morning. Please give me my violin.'And Holmes began to play his violin. He had done all the thinking he could. Now he needed more details of the case to help him.■5 Sir Henry BaskervilleDr Mortimer and Sir Henry Baskerville arrived at exact-ly ten o'clock the following morning.Sir Henry was a small,healthy,well-built man.His face showed that he had a strong character. He wore a country suit of thick,red-brown material, and his skin showed that he spent most of his time in the open air.'I am glad this meeting was already arranged,'Sir Henry said, after we had shaken hands with our visitors.'I need your help,Mr Holmes.A strange thing happened to me this morning.Look at this letter.'He put a piece of paper on the table. On it were the words:'Do not go on to the moor.If you do,your life will be indan-ger.'The words had been cut out of a newspaper.'Can you tell me,Mr Holmes, what this means, and who is so interested in me?'Sir Henry asked.'This is very interesting,'said Holmes.'Look how badly it has been done.I think the writer was in a hurry.Why?Per-haps because he did not want somebody to see him.I think the address was written in a hotel. The pen and the ink have both given the writer trouble. The pen has run dry three times in writing a short address. There was probably very little ink in the bottle.A private pen and bottle of ink are never allowed to get into that condition.Hullo, what's this?'He was holding the letter only a few centimetres from his eyes.'Well?'I ashed.'Nothing,'he said, and threw the letter down.'Now,Sir Henry, have you anything else to tell us?''No,'said Sir Henry.'Except that I have lost one of my shoes.I put a pair outside my door last night.I wanted the ho- tel to clean them, but when I went to get them this morning, one had gone.I only bought them yesterday, and I have never worn them. But I wanted a good shine on them.''One shoe seems a useless thing to steal,'said Holmes.'I am sure the shoe will be found in the hotel and returned to you.But now we must tell you some things about the Baskerville family.'Dr Mortimer took out the old Baskerville papers and read them to Sir Henry.Holmes then told him about the death of Sir Charles.'So this letter is from someone who is trying to warn me,or frighten me away,'said Sir Henry.'Yes,'said Holmes.'And we have to decide if it is sensible for you to go to Baskerville Hall. There seems to be danger there for you.''There is no man or devil who will stop me from going to the home of my family,'said Sir Henry angrily.'I want some time to think about what you have told me.Will you and Dr Watson join me for lunch at my hotel in two hours'time?By then,I'll be able to tell you what I think.'Dr Mortimer and Sir Henry said goodbye, and decided to walk back to their hotel. As soon as our visitors had gone,Holmes changed from the talker to the man of action.'Quick,Watson.Your coat and hat.We must follow them.'We got ready quickly and went into the street. Our friends were not far ahead of us and we followed. We stayed about a hundred metres behind them.Suddenly Holmes gave a cry.I saw a taxi driving along very slowly on the other side of the road from our friends.'That's our man,Watson!Come along! We'll have a good look at him.'I saw a man with a large black beard looking out of the taxi window. He had been following and watching our friends. But when he saw us running towards him,he shouted something to the driver, and the taxi drove off quickly down the road.Holmes looked round for another taxi, but could not see one.He began to run after the first taxi, but it was soon out of sight.'Well,I got the number of the taxi,'said Holmes.'So I can find the driver. He may be able to tell us something about his passenger.Would you recognize the man if you saw him again?''Only his beard,'I said.'He wanted us to recognize the beard,'said Holmes.'I think it was a false one.'■6 More MysteryLater,we went on to Sir Henry's hotel. He was pleased to see us,but rather angry because another of his shoes had disappeared. This time it was one shose of an old pair.I could see that holmes found this both interesting and strange. He thought about it for a few moments, but said nothing ex- cept that he did not understand why a second shoe had been stolen. At lunch,Sir henry told Holmes that he had decided to go to Baskerville Hall.'I think you have decided to do the right thing,'said Holmes.'I know somebody is following you.If someone tries to harm you in London,it will be hard to stop him or catch him afterwards. In the country we have a better chance.'Holmes went on to tell them about what we had seen that morning. Then he asked Dr Mortimer if anyone with a large black beard lived in or near Baskerville Hall.'Yes,said Dr Mortimer,'Barrymore,Sir Charles'butler, has a black heard.''We must check whether Barrymore is in London or at Baskerville Hall,'said Holmes.'I shall send a telegram to Bar-rymore at the Hall, which will say:“Is everything ready for Sir Henry?”Then I'll send another telegram to the local post of-fice.Thisone will say:“please put telegram to Mr Barrymore into his own hand.If he is away, please return telegram to Sir Henry Baskerville.”I'll give your address at this hotel. We shall know before evening whether Barrymore is in Devonshire or not.''Barrymore and his wife have a very fine home and nothing to do while the family is not living in the Hall,'said Sir Henry.'That's true,'said Holmes.'Did the Barrymores receive anything from Sir Chades'will? And did they know that they would get some money when he died?''Yes,'said Dr Mortimer.'They each received£500,and Sir Charles told everyone what he had written in his will.''That's very interesting,'said Holmes.'I hope you don't suspect everyone who got something from the will,'said Dr Mortimer.'I received£1000.''Indeed!'said Holmes.'And who else received money?''A lot of people received a little money. He gave a lot of money to a number of hospitals. The rest all went to Sir Henry, who received£740000.''I had no idea it was so much,'said Holmes in surprise.'The Baskerville lands are worth about one million pounds,' Dr Mortimer said.'Dear me,'said Holmes.'A man could kill for that much. One more question. If something happened to our young friend here, who would get Baskerville Hall and all its lands?''Well,as you know,Sir Charles had two brothers.Sir Henry is the only son of Sir Charles'younger brother. The youngest brother of the three,Roger, was a criminal. The police wanted him,so he had to leave England. They say he looked exactly like the family picture of old Sir Hugo, who first saw the Hound. He was the same kind of man, too. He went to South America, where he died of a fever. So if Sir Henry died,Baskerville Hall would go to James Desmond, who is a cousin of the Baskervilles.James Desmond is an old man,who lives in the north of England. His life is very simple and he would not want to be rich.''Thank you,Dr Mortimer,'said Holmes.'Now,Sir Henry,I agree that you should go to Baskerville Hall as quickly as pos -sible.But you must not go alone.I myself cannot leave London at the present time.I am working on another case.I am trying to save one of the most important men in England from a diffi-cult situation.I hope my friend Watson will go with you.If there is danger, you could not have a better man by your side.'Sir Henry and I were both very happy with this idea.So we arranged to travel to Devonshire on the following Saturday.Just as we were leaving Sir Henry's room,he gave a cry and got down on his knees by the table.'Here's my brown shoe that was lost,'he said, reaching un-der the table.'That's very strange,'said Dr Mortimer.'We bothsearched the room before lunch, and it wasn't under the table then.'None of the people who worked at the hotel could explain how the shoe had got back into the room.So we had another mystery. On the way back to Baker Street in the taxi,Holmes sat thinking deeply. All through the afternoon and the evening he went on thinking silently, and smoking pipe after pipe.Just before dinner,a telegram arrived. It was from Sir Henry and said:'Have just heard that Barrymore is at the Hall.''So we don't have the answer to the mystery of the man with the beard,'said Holmes.'But perhaps we shall soon have an answer to another question.'At that moment the door bell rang.It was the driver of the bearded man's taxi.'I got a message that you wanted to see me,'said the driver.'I hope there's nothing wrong.''No,no,my good man,'said Holmes.'In fact I'll give you some money if you can answer my questions clearly.Tell me all about the man in your taxi this morning. He was watching this house at ten o'clock and then told you to follow the two gentlemen who came out of it.'The taxi driver was surprised at how much Holmes seemed to know.He answered:'The man told me that he was a detec-tive,and that I should say nothing about him to anyone.''This is a serious business,'said Holmes,'and you will be in trouble if you try to hide anything. What can you tell me?''The man told me his name,'said the driver.Holmes looked like a man who has just won an important game.'That was not very clever of him,'he said.'What was his name?''His name,'said the taxi driver,'was Sherlock Holmes.'I have never seen my friend look more surprised Then he laughed loudly.'Tell me where be got into your taxi and everything。

A Book Report on The Prince and the PauperBy LeeBrief introduction about the authorThe Prince and the Pauper is one of masterpiece of Mark Twain (1835-1910) , an American writer, journalist and humorist. His formal education ended soon after his father’s death in 1847, when he became a printer’s apprentice, working for a time on Missouri Courier. While working for the Virginia City Territorial Enterprise, he adopted the pseudonym “Mark Twain” and his original name was Samuel Langhorne Clemens. Twain’s first book, Jumping Frog, appeared in 1865 and then he won a worldwide audience for his stories of the youthful adventures of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn. Twain used contemporary language in his books to bring his characters to life. This realistic prose style influenced numerous American writers. Ironically, for his time Twain was liberal on racial and many social issues. Mark Twain was an incredibly prolific American author who lived through the times that played an important role in shaping American culture. Mark Twain is called “the father of American Literature”. Mark Twain's the Prince and the Pauper is a popular novel and a classic from American Literature.Summary of the novelThe Prince and the Pauper was based on the 16th century's England society, published in 1881. However, it is naturally for readers to associate the plot with 19th century's America because it satirize and reveal the speculation of American, craziness of money worship, the gloominess of society, and inhumanity of racial discrimination. This novel is very attractive. It is a story about two young boys who are identical in appearance: Edward Tudor, the Prince of England and Tom Candy, a pauper who lived in a very poor family. Their lives and status changed when they two changed their clothes accidentally. From then on, their adventure life began. Tom, the pauper was treated like a mad prince and lived a luxurious life in the palace. But he did not like that kind of life. He missed his mother and his two sisters. Meanwhile, the Lady Jane Grey talks with him and becomes very confused about Tom's behavior. So he said to everyone in the palace that he wasn’t the prince. But nobody believed him, and everyone thought that his prince was mad. Soon the King died, and Tom had to join the coronation and become the King of the England. On the contrary, the true prince, Edward was treated as a pauper and had to lead a vagrant life. Then Tom’s father mistook him for Tom, always beat him and ask him to beg in the street. The prince met Hendon and made friends with her, who used to be a noble but now his cousin took his place unlawfully by chance. Hendon help the prince a lot, they became close friends. And the prince promised that the Hendon has the right to sit in the presence of the King of England as well as his son and grandson. During the prince’s exiled life, he found that the law of the England is much too unfair and cruelty, and the life of the paupers are much too rough, So he made up his mind to change these law and made the life easier to the paupers. At the end of the novel, Tom help Edward to regain his crown of England. At the same time Edward help another hero of this novel— Miles Hendon to return to his home and get his fortune and beloved wife. Different person has different life. Almost people are unsatisfied with their present life, and envy others’ life. But when we live in others life we will be unsuitable. At that time we will find our life is more appropriate for ourselves.Personal comment:Although the novel of The Prince and The Pauper is not famous as other works Mark Twain wrote. But this novel is one of his most tightly plotted novels. It is strongly thematic. It described the contrasting lives of rich and poor, the lives of the nobility with the lives of the lower classes. And in this point, Mark Twain reappear his main writing style--- satire to show that a prince dressed in a pauper’s clothing will be treated as a pauper. Another satiric point is that as a king, he has no real power and but is enslaved to the powerful people of his family. The main characters in this novel: first is Edward, a prince, enjoyed the easy and comfortable life and flattered by others. He was born of nobility and had no experience of hardship. But when he was banished out of the palace, he experienced a hard life as a pauper. Although all his hard sufferings were aim to come back to the palace, but I can not ignore his endeavor and his lenient. Second is Tom, I was affected by his kindness and honesty. He lived in a high mixed together, but he kept his own characters. However, at first he was not willing to give the throne back to the true prince, but he finally returned to the little boy who is kind and honest. When he was left at the palace, though he enjoyed the resplendent and magnificent surroundings, he tired to explain to the lady that he is not the real prince. Although he lived the life as a prince, he did not lose his original quality. At the end of the story, when Edward came back, Tom performed his honest and king characters again. He backed space to Edward on his own initiative. That is the most cherished thing. Therefore, I’m deeply influenced by their qualities of kindness, honest, lenience and so on. At last, I have to say that this novel is not just a novel written by the author himself but also the reflection of the true society at the nineteen century. Even though, the novel is written on the fact of the English history, but there must be something overstated and something not conformed to the true history. And in the reality, we had better not expect that one day we will be the prince as Tom. Everything we should do at the moment is to do well of our study.。
The Grapes of WrathJohn Steinbeck (1902-1968), the author of The Grapes of Wrath, was born in Salinas, California. This novel was set in the Great Depression. His awareness of the underclass inspired him to write The Grapes of Wrath, which he published on April14, 1939.The Grapes of Wrath captures a turbulent moment in American history. It tells a story of the Joad family, featuring the hardship and the oppression suffered by migrant laborers. Tom Joad, the novel’s protagonist and Joad family’s favorite son, releases from an Oklahoma state prison. He takes his way home only to find that all the surrounding farms were deserted. Then Tom, with his family and Jim, the pastor, goes to California by an old truck. At the same time, there are thousands of families moving west to California only because a yellow pamphlet dispensed from California gives them hope of jobs. Finally, they arrive in the California only to find a depleted job market. And the whole family could only lead a hard life. This novel ends up with Sharon’s milking the starving man. Before reading this novel, to be frank, I had no idea why I chose this novel as my winter vocation reading. Maybe I was just impressed by its name. I thought such a contemporaryliterature should be filled with sarcasm or black humor just like novels written by O.Henry. But I was wrong. This novel uses many writing techniques and the great symbols leave me a deep impression. For example, the title “grape”is a symbol of hope and abundance. In the novel, the grapes symbolize the dreams of a new life of those people who go to California with a death-defying spirit. However, when they find everything is out of their expectation, the symbol of grapes turn into bitter and anger. Another example is the tortoise at the beginning of the novel. It reminds me of the stubborn and determined ways of the Joad family and other migrant worker families. Besides, there is also an example in the end of the novel, Sharon’s pregnancy. It symbolizes the promise of a new beginning. Sharon matures considerably when she helps the starving stranger. These symbols make the whole novel all the more striking and profound. In the first part of the Grapes of Wrath, the author describes the first great depression and therefore draws a lifeless picture in my mind.“These things were lost, and crops were reckoned in dollars, and land was valued by principal plus interest, and crops were bought and sold before they were planted. Then crop failure, drought, and flood were no longer little deaths withinlife, but simple losses of money.” The several sentences tells us that the big bad drought made farming impossible. The Joad family is living a hard life. Apart from the vivid description of the great depression, I can also feel the cold-blooded cruelty and selfishness of some people. For example, in the novel, it says, “No matter how clever, how loving a man might be with earth and growing things, he could not survive if he were not also a good shopkeeper. And as time went on, the business men had the farms, an d the farms grew larger, but there were fewer of them.”In this novel, there are the most respectable people, the poor. As the book says, "I'm learning one thing good...If you're in trouble or hurt or need - go to the poor people. They're the only ones that'll help - the only ones."It means that the poor people remain the purest hearts and generosity. The great spirit of the poor is deeply moving for me.After reading The Grapes of Wrath, I also saw the film on the Internet. It is a white-and-black film, which made me a little bit uncomfortable. Nevertheless, it is an adaptation of the novel for the film, which can possibly make my understanding of this novel more profound. The first part of the film version relatively follows the original. But the following parts are different from the book. Even though the film has been partly omitted, it stillgave me a unique feeling on this novel. For its gray background, the depressing atmosphere and the characters’struggling with themselves with their own internal difficulties or resistances to the harsh reality left a deep impression on me.Most people in the novel show a great courage and confidence towards the difficulties. They just hold the faith that we are the people. As the book says, “We're the people that live. They can't wipe us out; they can't lick us. We'll go on forever, Pa, because we're the people." Hence, we can know those people will be fine whether life continues to be a struggle or not. When I finished it, I also found the whole atmosphere of this novel is dark but inspiring, despairing but ambitious, lifeless but hopeful. There are always people who will stand strong, maintain their humanity and help others. I, therefore, felt a kind of dignity and optimism from them. Life is so beautiful that there is always hope so long as you are alive. The Grapes of Wrath gives me a special feeling on life. I like this novel. It indeed deserved to be read and has to be read in our life, at least in my life. In the end, let me conclude my writing with the words of wisdom by John Steinbeck: We will go on forever, because we are the people.。
A book Report of The Old Man and the Sea“Vessel crossed the end of the world, into the unknown sea, hanging on the side of the bow while wind and rain erosion-stricken still incomparably beautiful flag, banner, brandishing a Yunlong general words glittering - beyond the limit "This is ,theauthor ,Hemingway's evaluation of his work The Old Man and the Sea .Heimingway, one of my favourite writers. His book The Old Man and the Sea is one of his most famous works of this generation. It not only won the Pulitzer literary creation in 1953, but also it was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1954. The reason is: "Good command of modern narrative art, especially in its recent work, the old man and the sea , at the same time, also because he played in contemporary style influence.”Obviously, this b ook is a huge successful novel which is remembered in people’s heart. This book describles a story that an old man alone in the sea fishing all the year round. In the process of reading. I constantly ask myself, what supports an old man who emerged from great vicissitudes alone in the middle of the vast ocean fishingeighty-four days? Even though no harvest, he insisted on fishing.it's not just because he is going to depend on fish for a living, but fishing has become a necessary part of his life.In the last time fishing, he caught a big fish. I only remember the day when he met the big marlin, the old man knew one person is weak, but he didn't quit, never give up .He kept on going. What left the deepest impression on me is when the old man battled with the shark. When fishing for traces in the old man's back, pain beyond the limit of stand, the old man then say a prayer to release the pain. The shark struck again and again, the old man made great efforts to fight back. Harpoon was taken away by sharks, he tied the knife on the oar disorderly. lthough the fish was bitten, the old man was still company the big marlin. An ordinary fisherman he is, he has a persistent spirit to face setbacks and does not fear the difficulties. As we can see, the old man's search for his fish, his success, and his loss combination many of Hemingway's favorite ingredients. The old man’s action needs physical strength, skill, experience, courage, and endurance, which is a kind of big feat. The qualities of Santiago that Hemingway has admired in the best of his men of action. Like them, Santiago is proud, but old age made him mature. He has learned that humility can exist side by side with true pride. Though failure is bitter, he faces it and accepts its pain, as he has accepted loneliness. Beyond the suffering and disappointment, the old man sees hope, "Hope is the duty of man. " In this endurance and hope there is dignity, a combination of strength and gentleness. In Santiago, Hemingway seems to tell us , we see what good old age is like, wise and seasoned and strong. This novel reminds me of Heimingway’s other novel—For whom the bells tolls. "No man is an Iland, intire of itself; every man is a piece of the Continent, a part of th e main; if aClod be washed away by the Sea..Europe is the less, as well as if a Promon tory were, as well as if a Mannor of thy friends or of thine own were; any mansdeath diminishes me, because I am involved in Mankind ; And therefore never send to kno w for whom the bells tolls; It tolls for thee."Truly, the entire humanbeing is a community of fate, the misfortunes of others is your own misfortune.Everyone has his own destiny, we have it ,know it ,understand it ,accept it and then fight against it.Just like the old man and the sea, even if frustrated and tough, the old man accept his destiny. Every part of his body is very old except his eyes. His eyes are as blue as the sea, which seems happy not despressed .Read from the book, the old man declares w a r o n t h e h a r d s h i p s o f l i f e a n d c h a l l e n g e t h e l i m i t s o f life.Difficulties, setbacks ,failures ,pain and disappointment never defeat him.He fought the death perseverely. What’s more,he is willing to exchange life for the honor and dignity to faith and courage. Further ,Beyond its would rather die than turn, fiercely as sweet personality, hardness, I read into the depth of philosophical and symbolism. Santiago is a man whose story is a kind of tough spirit of philosophy, the existence of an eternal, beyond time and space, the eternal of destiny. In the book the old man said: "Man is not made for defeat. A man can be destroyed but not defeated." These are my favourite words and always alert me. However, it is a very common sentence for us. In our real life, many people were defeated by this sentence. Of course, there are many forces. In the face of setbacks some people can't insist and people often bow to the evil . Some people chose to give up. Some people chose to escape.Few people brave enough to fight it. Compared with the old fisherman has been living, those who escape from the dilemma are losers. When we encounter difficulties, think of the strong old fisherman whose attitude to life. In the future ,we will encounter more than once more, more serious setbacks and failures. But I believe, as long as the thought of the old fisherman whose strong and love of life. We will also learn to be strong and face the difficulties. Life itself is an endless joureny or a long bumpy road, it is full of difficulties and challenges . But as long as .ur indomitable courage andself-confidence to our heart to meet the challenges, we will always be a real winner!Tina2014 ,1。

Sherlock Holmes, Doctor Watson and Henry Baskervilles killed the hound at last and the murderer who wanted to get the money of the family finally died in the marsh.Comment:The novel mainly tells a story of an attempted murder inspired by the legend of a fearsome, horriblel hound. Like many of the others, it originally appeared in the Strand Magazine, in nine parts. It is a story of mystery and adventure that makes no attempt to present deep, complicated characters or question the nature of society. Its strength lies in the way the drama develops, taking us from the comfortable, safe surroundings of Baker Street in London to the cold, unwelcoming Baskerville Hall in the lonely wilds of Dartmoor. It is a very exciting story shows how clever Sherlock Holmes is. Thanks to Konan Doyle, I can read a lot of good detective stories now.Book Report on ImmenseeName:zhanftian Class: 0912 Date:5.15Book Title:ImmenseeAuthor: Theodor StormPublisher:The world book publishing company, Beijing companySummary:Theodor Storm is a poet and short-story writer. The book report of The Great GatsbayBy F. Scott. FizgeraldThe Great Gatsbay is written by American author F. Scott. Fizgerald, who is considered a member of the "lost generation" of the Twenties. It was first published on 1925. The following is the main plot of the novel.A young man named Nick Caraway, who came to New York City in string of 1922. He became involved in the life of his neighbour at Long Island, jay Gatsbay revealed to Nick, that he fell in love with his cousin Daisy before the war. At that time, he is poor. However, Daisy married Tom Buchanan, a rich but boring man of good social position. But Gatsby was still in love with her.In Gatsby's opinion, daisy was a beautiful and charming that he had never seen. But I think she was also fickle, shallow, hypocritical. She was love with money, easy, and material luxury because she seemed to love Gatsby, but just appearance. Although I know the real Daisy, Gatsby did not know her clearly. This is the main reason why Gatsby could not get what he wanted.Becoming wealthy is the most important for him. Large fortune was from distributing illegal alcohol and trading in stolen securities. After getting money, Gatsby got luxurious possessions. "And a marble swimming pool, and more than forty acres of lawn and garden, it was Gatsby mansion."Besides,Gatsby went to Oxford University to get further study in order to make him more elegant and noble. He changed since his New Haven years. Now he was a study straw-haired man of thirty with a rather hard mouth and a supercilious manner. Two shining arrogant eyes has established dominance over his face and gave him the appearance of always learning aggressively forward. Not even the effeminate swank of his riding clothes could hide the enormous power of that body- he seemed to fill those glistening boots until he strained the top lacing, and you could see a great pack of muck shifting when his shoulder moved under his thin coat. It was a body capable of enormous beverage-" a cruel body" in Nick's eyes.Gatsby held sumptuous parties every weekend at his mansion. The party is almost unbelievably luxurious. He made friends who have outstanding fame and high position.Due to natural instincts- vanity, Daisy began to sob helplessly;; I did love him true, but I loved you too." when Gatsby tried to convince her to leave Tom. Gatsby lost Daisy because he had no money, but he still loved her. It was the blinding love that killed him.Daisy, driving Gatsby's car, hit and killed Tom's mistress, Myrtle Wilson, Gather knew the truth, but he kept silent to protect her. Afterwards, Tom told Myrtle's husband that it was Gatsby killed his wife. Then Wilson murdered Gatsby and committed suicide. After Gatsby''s dying, almost no people including those who usually attended his parties came to his funeral. Nick was left to arrange Gatsby's funeral, attended only Gatsby's father and the former guests. The woman who ever allowed Gatsby to take the blame for killing Myrtle rather than attend his funeral moved away with her husband finally, leaving no contact address.Gatsby is the typical American youth in the twenties. He regarded Daisy as the symbol of the youth, money and status deeply. He thought innocently: he can receive the last love, his dream after having money. It was a pity. He had misunderstood the girl he loved and the boring society on the surface. So he would never made his dream come true. But, he tried his best.。
Book Review of The Adventures of Huckleberry FinnAdventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain. Huck is a clever, kind and brave white boy. He flees from his father to the Mississippi River to pursue freedom. He meets negro slave Jim on his escape way, who is hard-working, honest and loyal. He helps Jim to get rid of miserable life. The novel creates the character---dignified negro slave, criticizes the hypocrisy of religion and the ignorance of its follower, and praises Huck's wisdom and kindness. In the 1850s, the time this novel has covered, America is a country with political corruption and deeper contradiction in labor, hypocritical and crafty church and a lot of poor people. However, the most serious problems are slavery and racial discrimination. The author showed the evil of the religions. He expressed that he was willing to fight facing these absurd phenomena. Mark sympathized and supported these suffering black man to be against. He told us that the black men are not worse than white men in morality and even better than them in some degree by portraying the character, Jim and his lofty behaviors. It is urgent to abolish the slavery.Huck is a brave boy. It needs big courage to flee with an escaping slave at that time, let alone helping this slave to get free. His behaviors are against the law. He will go to hell. But he does it. As a child grouping up in the white man's society, he is influenced by the nationalism reactionary sermon and social ethos inevitably. The traditional thought of that feudal society has a sharp conflict with the pure and integrity in Huck's young heart. He is entangled by that which is right between his thought and the social thoughts. In law, Jim is a negro slave possessed by Miss Watson; in morality, he thinks he should assist Jim to emancipate from the yoke of slavery and be free. A voice in his mind warns him: "It is immoral to kidnap the master's slave." Then he tries to write to Miss Watson to tell her that Jim ishere. However, something strike to his mind--- the happy moment flowing on the river with Jim, the harmonious time living in the raft, their friendship and Jim's word " you are my only and best friend". Finally he tears the letter into piece and says: "let it go to hell." Huck is such an outright and warm-hearted boy that shows a big difference with the rigid and cruel society. The hero's rebellion also has its social significance. It keeps people alert all the time----equality is human being's common concern, regardless of skin color or race. In the meantime, it raises a question of what is a civilizedsociety. It is obvious that a society that owns slaves is impossible to be just and even civilized.Nowadays, moral and racial problems in a society are continuously disturbing topic for people.。
Book Report of The Great GatsbyThe introduction about the author:Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald(September 24, 1896 –December 21, 1940) was an American author of novels and short stories, whose works are the paradigm writings of the Jazz Age, a term he coined himself. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest American writers of the 20th century. Fitzgerald is considered a member of the "Lost Generation" of the 1920s. He finished four novels: This Side of Paradise, The Beautiful and Damned, Tender Is the Night, and the most famous one is The Great Gatsby.Fitzgerald also wrote many short stories that treat themes of youth and promise along with despair and age. The Great Gatsby was first published in 1925, and it has been republished in 1945 and 1953. There are two settings for the novel. The first setting is on Long Island's North Shore and the second major setting is in New York City. The book is set within the year 1922 from the spring to the autumn.Summary of this book:Nick Carraway, a Midwesterner who had graduated from Yale, moved to New York in the summer of 1922 to learn about the bond business. He rented a house in the West Egg district of Long Island, a group who had made their fortunes too recently to have established social connections and who were prone to garish displays of wealth. Nick’s n ext-door neighbor in West Egg was a mysterious man named Jay Gatsby, who lived in a gigantic Gothic mansion and threw extravagant parties every Saturday night.Nick was unlike the other inhabitants of West Egg—he was educated at Yale and had social connections in East Egg, a fashionable area of Long Island home to the established upper class. Nick drove out to East Egg one eveningfor dinner with his cousin, Daisy Buchanan, and her husband, Tom, an erstwhile classmate of Nick’s at Yale. Daisy and Tom introduce d Nick to Jordan Baker, a beautiful, cynical young woman with whom Nick began a romantic relationship. Nick also leart a bit about Daisy and Tom’s marriage: Jordan told him that Tom had a lover, Myrtle Wilson, who lived in the valley of ashes, a gray industrial dumping ground between West Egg and New York City. Not long after this revelation, Nick travelled to New York City with Tom and Myrtle. At a vulgar, gaudy party in the apartment that Tom kept for the affair, Myrtle began to taunt Tom about Daisy, and Tom responded by breaking her nose.As the summer progressed, Nick eventually garnered an invitation to one of Gatsby’s legendary parties. He encountered Jordan Baker at the party, and they met Gatsby himself, a surprisingly young man who had a remarkable smile and called everyone “old sport.” Gatsby ask ed to speak to Jordan alone, and through Jordan, Nick later leart more about his mysterious neighbor. Gatsby told Jordan that he knew Daisy in Louisville in 1917 and was deeply in love with her. He spent many nights staring at the green light at the end of her dock, across the bay from his mansion. Gatsby’s extravagan t lifestyle and wild parties were simply an attempt to impress Daisy. Gatsby now wanted Nick to arrange a reunion between himself and Daisy, but he was afraid that Daisy would refuse to see him if she knew that he still loved her. Nick invited Daisy to have tea at his house, without telling her that Gatsby would also be there. After an initially awkward reunion, Gatsby and Daisy reestablished their connection. They begin an affair. After a short time, Tom grew increasingly suspicious of his wife’s relationship with Gatsby. At a lunche on at the Buchanans’ house, Ga tsby stared at Daisy with such undisguised passion that Tom realized Gatsby is in love with her. Though Tom involved in an extramarital affair, he was deeply outraged by the thought that his wife could be unfaithful tohim. He forced the group to drive into New York City, where he confronted Gatsby in a suite at the Plaza Hotel. Tom asserted that he and Daisy had a history that Gatsby could never understand, and he announced to his wife that Gatsby was a criminal—his fortune came from bootlegging alcohol and other illegal activities. Daisy realized that her allegiance was to Tom, and Tom contemptuously sent her back to East Egg with Gatsby, attempting to prove that Gatsby could not hurt him. When Nick, Jordan, and Tom drove through the valley of ashes, however, they discovered that Gatsby’s car ha d struck and killed Myrtle, Tom’s lover. They rushed back to Long Island, where Nick leart from Gatsby that Daisy was driving the car when it struck Myrtle, but that Gatsby intended to take the blame. The next day, Tom told Myrtle’s husband, George, that Gatsby was the driver of the car. George, who had leapt to the conclusion that the driver of the car that killed Myrtle must have had been her lover, found Gatsby in the pool at his mansion and shoots him dead. He then fatally shot himself. Nick staged a small funeral for Gatsby, ended his relationship with Jordan, and moved back to the Midwest to escape the disgust he felt for the people surrounding Gatsby’s life and for the emptiness and moral decay of life among the wealthy on the East Coast. Nick reflected that just as Gatsby’s dream of Daisy was corrupted by money and dishonesty, the American dream of happiness and individualism had disintegrated into the mere pursuit of wealth. Though Gatsby’s power to transform his dreams into reality made him “great,” Nick reflected that the era of dreaming—both Gatsby’s dream and the American dream—was over.。

Book Report on The hound of the Baskervilles by Arthur Conan DoyleSherlock season 3 is beyond doubt a big hit this winter. I feel at a loss, though this time Sherlock is just as the fancy of any big fan rather than not a fan of Conan Doyle. This is tosay,Sherlock shares a much closer relationship with the people around him to a large extend so that he puts less emphasis on deduction. At least, I didn’t see. This reminded me of an episode of season two which was widely reputed to be faithful to the original literature. It is the third of the four crime novels written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. I prefer novels to short stories because they present character traits from multiple views. In terms of the lengthof short stories are unavoidably pushed to the climax suddenly. It is so abrupt that I have little chance to challenge the author. Especially the works of Arthur Conan Doyle don’t even give me an opportunity to conjuncture, for he had a passion for revealing the truth till the last page. However, the hound of the Baskervilles is an “unusual” novel as well as one of the most famous detective novels.“Sir Charles Baskerville, a Devon landowner, has died suddenly, apparently from the fright given him by an enormous fearsome dog. Some of the local people believe an old legend according to which the dog is not an earthly animal, but rather a supernatural hell-hound which inhabits the area’s lonely dangerous moor and has haunted the Baskervilles for generations. It’s up to Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson to show what the true nature of the hound is while seeing to it that no harm comes to Sir Henry Baskerv ille, Sir Charles’ nephew and heir who has come to live in Baskerville Hall and claim his inheritance.”iThe whole story was enshrouded in curses and hazards. In Conan Doyle’s later stages of writing he turned to more suspense. However, he still kept his own writing style lacking the concrete details and emphasizing the deduction. In a word, it is hard for you to guess the murderer. It doesn’t hold true this time. The description of the murder er and his so-called sister who finally turned out to be his wife was thoughtful designed. The man who was said to haveinterest in entomology was pursuing the rare insect and keeping explaining to Watson including a lot of jargon. He watched for his “sister” and Sir Henry Baskerville as a wild animal was looking at its prey. His dilemma was highlighted through the observation from Watson and the deduction ofApart from the smart and exciting plot, the characterization is very lively. Holmes, alleged to be the only criminal investigator, still expressed the regret for his arrogance. He may be clumsy in simple everyday life, whereas he knew about the people around well. He admired Watson’s prudence and braveness so he requested him to accompany Sir Henry Baskerville in case of any accident. (My dear Watson, you were born to be a man of action.ii)He appreciated Lestrade’s faith so he begged his help to catch the criminal though in most cases he was contemptuous of all authority. He was accustomed to interrupting others’ “nonsense” while he could disguise himself and hide in the moor alone for several days in order to observe the situation. I had already learnedabout Holmes so well and this novel didn’t disappoint me.What surprised me was the courage Watson emobodied in the whole case. On hearing the weeping woman, he waited patiently to locate the sound source. Seeking the truth, he kept vigil to trace the suspect. Chasing the criminal, he ventured deep into the moor for the law in his heart. For a long time, he acted as a loyal reader keepingask questions. In this way Holmes could report his progress and explain his wired action. As we all know, if Holmes had a bit of patience, it must be spent on Watson.(…he was exceedingly loth to communicate his full plans to any other person until the instant of their fulfilment.iii) Meanwhile, Watson had to accept the mockery and ridicule from Holmes in return. We nearly forgot that Watson was a crack shot[ and an excellent doctor and surgeon.Arthur Conan Doyle created many female characters with beauty and wisdom. The most famous one is “the woman” who played tricks on Holmes but finally won his respect. In this book, there are also two extraordinary women. Miss Beryl Stapleton, the wife of the murderer, resorted to a piece of Times to warn Sir Henry Baskerville. Laura Lyons realized that after she was cheated by the murderer she confessed everything. Considering that the novel was finished in 1902 this character is typical of an independent and ideal woman beyond the era.The story happened in a vaster area and switched between London and Baskervilles. The irrelevant accident and three broken threads perfected the secret more extraordinary. From my point of view, the length of a novel can convey something irony more clear and complete. The hound of the Baskervilles is more than a detective novel. It does not involvea religion, a company town, or imperial looting. I believe that Doyle implicitly criticized a hereditary aristocracy that passed down evils to each generation.iv The tragedy couldn’t be avoided ,for as long as such a great family had existed, there would have been conspiracies and at loggerheads. The murderer dramatically proved to be a member of this family, which expressed Doyle’s prospective far more clearly. The ending was worth pondering for the murderer finally escaped, which is not a common Doyle’s style. The castle is easily damaged from inside, which holds true in this novel. The curse resulted from a big fortune or the lost lover and turned into the hostility and hatred. In the world, there are far more felonies horendous than murder.i Conan D, Smy P.
