Section Ⅰ Introduction & Reading and Vocabulary—ComprehendingⅠ阅读理解AA home science experiment recently took the world by storm. Two teens from Toronto, in Canada, sent a Lego man rising abovethe Earth and captured their tiny astronaut’s trip on film.Mathew Ho and Asad Muhammad, both 17, used a weatherballoon to launch their plastic lego model 16 miles above the Earth. This is inside a part of Earth’s atmosphere. The two teens were inspired by a similar project performed by students at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). The MIT students had launched a weather balloon with a camera into near space and taken many unusual images of the Earth. Mathew and Asad then spent four months figuring out how to launch their own spacecraft into the space.Traveling to space is expensive for NASA, but Mathew and Asad worked hard to keep their costs down. They bought much of their equipment used and even sewed the Lego man’s parachute (降落伞) by hand. In total, the project cost only $400.“We had a lot of anxiety on launch day because there were high winds when we were going up,” Mathew told reporters. They had to pump extra helium (氦) into the balloon so that it would rise quickly and avoid being blown too far off course by the strong winds. The toy astronaut’s journey lasted 97 minutes before the balloon broke and he fell back to Earth. Mathew and Asad then spent two weekends looking for their spacecraft. It had landed 76 miles away from the launch site. The student scientists are currently finishing up their final year of high school and applying for colleges. They are also looking into more doityourself space projects.“I guess the sky is not really the limit anymore,” Mathew tol d reporters. “We never knew we’d get this far. It’s been a lesson for us that hard work pays off.”【解题导语】本文主要介绍了两个青少年利用气象气球把他们的玩具乐高人送到太空的过程和结果。

Module 5 The Conquest of the Universe During the Cold War, the United States and the Soviet Union were in competition with each other to see who had the better technology in space. After World War Ⅱboth the United States and the Soviet Union realized how important rocket research would be to the military. They each employed the top rocket scientists from Germany to help with their research. Soon both sides were making progress in rocket technology. The Space Race began in 1955 when both countries announced that they would soon launch satellites into orbit. The Soviets took the US announcement as a challenge and even set up a commission whose goal was to beat the US in putting a satellite into space. On Oct. 4th, 1957 the Russians placed the first successful satellite called SputnikⅠinto orbit. Thus, the Russians had taken the lead in the Space Race. Four months later, the Americans successfully launched their first satellite called the ExplorerⅠ. However, the Soviets again won the race for putting the first man into space. On Apr. 12th, 1961, Yuri Gagarin was the first man to orbit the Earth in the spacecraft VostokⅠ. Three weeks later, the US launched the Freedom 7 and astronaut Alan Shepherd became the first American in space. However, Shepherd's craft did not orbit the Earth. It was nearly a year later that the first American, John Glenn, orbited the Earth on the Friendship 7 spacecraft. The Americans were embarrassed at being behind the Space Race. In 1961, President Kennedy announced that he wanted to be the first to put a man on the Moon. He thought this was important for the country and the western world, so the Apollo Moon program was launched. With the Apollo programs launched, the US had taken a huge lead in the Space Race. In July of 1975 with relations between the US and the Soviet Union beginning to thaw (关系缓和), the first USSoviet joint mission occurred with the ApolloSoyez project. The Space Race was effectively over.Section_ⅠIntroduction & Reading — Pr ereading[原文呈现]Space: the Final FrontierPart 1Ever since Neil Armstrong first set foot on①the Moon back on 21st July, 1969②,people have become accustomed③ to the idea of space travel. Millions of④ people watched that first moon landing on television, their hearts in their mouths, aware⑤of how difficult and dangerous an adventure it was, and what risks⑥had to be taken. With Armstrong's now famous words:“That's one small step for man, one giant⑦leap for mankind”, a dream was achieved. All three astronauts made it safely back to Earth, using a spaceship computer that was much less powerful than the ones used by the average school students today⑧.There were several more journeys into space over the next few years but the single spaceships were very expensive ⑨as they could not take off⑩more than once⑪. People were no longer so enthusiastic about⑫ a space travel programme that was costing the United States D|S10 million a day⑬. That was until the arrival of the space shuttle ⑭—a spacecraft that could be used for several journeys⑮. The first shuttle flight into space was the Columbia—launched from the Kennedy Space Centre on 12th April, 1981⑯. The aim of this flight was to test the new shuttle system, to go safely up into orbit and to return⑰ to the Earth for a safe landing. It was a success and a little more than a decade after Apollo 11's historic⑱ voyage, the Columbia made a safe, controlled, aeroplanestyle landing in California. This was the start of a new age⑲ of space travel.[读文清障]①set foot on/in 踏上,进入/进到(某处)②Ever since ...是时间状语从句,主句通常用现在完成时。

Some satellites have cameras which take photographsof the Earth to show how clouds are moving. Satellites are alsoused to connect our international phone calls.Computer connections of the World Wide Web and Internet also use satellites. Many of our TV programs come to us through satellites. Airplane pilots also sometimesuse a satellite to help them find their exact location. We use satellites to send television pictures from one part of the world to another. They are usually 35,880 kilometers above the equator. Sometimes we can see a satellite in the sky and it seems to stay in the same place. This is because it is moving around the world at 11, 000 kilometers an hour—exactly the same speed that the Earth rotates. A satellite must orbit the Earth with its antennae (天线) facing the Earth. Sometimes, it moves away from its orbit, so there are little rockets on it which are used to put the satellite back in the right position. This usually happens about every five or six days.Space is not empty! Every week, more and more satellites are sent into space to orbit the Earth. A satellite usually works for about 10-12 years. Satellites which are broken are sometimes repaired by astronauts or sometimes brought back to Earth to be repaired. Often, very old or broken satellites are left in space to orbit the Earth for a very long time. This is very serious because some satellites use nuclear power and they can crash into each other.【解题导语】卫星不仅在科学探索方面起着重要作用,而且在我们的生活中也起着非常重要的作用。
