Isn’t it clear that compared wit h our glorious selves, kids these days are self-absorbed social network addicts? However, this summer, my impression of today’s kids has been restored by the story of Rachel Beckwith. She could teach my generation a great deal about maturity and unselfishness —even though she’s just 9 years old, or was when she died on July 23.At age 5, Rachel had her long hair short off and sent to Locks of Love, which uses hair donations to make artificial hair for children who have lost their own hair because of cancer or other diseases. After that, Rachel announced that she would grow her hair long again and donate it again. And that’s what she did. Then when she was 8 years old, her church began raising money to build wells in Africa through an organization called charity: water. Rachel was astonished when she learned that other children had no clean water, so she skipped her ninth birthday party. Rachel set up a birthday page on the charity: water website with a target of $300. Instead of presents, she asked her friends to donate $9 each to charity: water. Finally Rachel raised only $220 — which had left her just a bit disappointed. Then, on July 20, a serious traffic accident left Rachel critically injured. Church members and friends, seeking some way of showing suppo rt, began donating on Rachel’s birthday page —/Rachel — and donations reached her $300 goal, and kept rising. But Rachel couldn’t hear that she had raised beyond the $47,544 that the singer Justin Bieber had raised for charity: water on hi s 17th birthday. “I think Rachel would have been overjoyed for she secretly had a crush on (迷恋) him,” Rachel’s mom said. When it was clear that Rachel would never regain consciousness, the family decided toremove the life support system. Her parents donated her hair for the final time to Locks of Love, and her organs to other children.Word about Rachel’s last fund-raising spread. Contributions poured in, often in $9 each. The total donations soon topped $100,000, then $300,000.This is a story not just of one girl, but of a young generation of outstanding problem-solvers working creatively.8. What does the author think of today’s kids after he knew the story of Rachel Beckwith?A. They can get problems settled effectively.B. They are unselfish as grown-ups.C. They are good at social network.D. They have narrow minds and care about nothing.9. Why did each of Rachel’s friends donate $9 to charity: water?A. Because she began to raise money from her ninth birthday.B. Because she set up her birthday page on June 9th.C. Because she had asked them to do that.D. Because she died at the age of 9 and they wanted to honor her.10. Why was the singer Justin Bieber mentioned in the text?A. Rachel collected more than him who she admired.B. He had donated on R achel’s page on his 17th birthday.C. Rachel would have been overjoyed for his donation.D. Rachel’s mom said she secretly had a crush on him.11. What does the text mainly talk about?A. Rachel’s hair donations.B. A lesson from Rachel.C. The author’s impression of today’s kidsD. If youwere born after 1978, and live until 80 years old, you will leave behind a minimumof 14, 400 plastic bottles on this planet.

As a college student, I am still busy with maintaining my grades and staying involved in my school’s community, but I decided to get out of my comfort zone and volunteer for America Recycles Day. And this turned out to be an awesome experience. The organization Ouachita Green put together this event, which allowed people from the Monroe area of Louisiana to bring in their recyclables, free of charge. Unfortunately, Louisiana is lacking in environmentally-friendly initiatives(倡议) so recycling is not offered to most people in our community. In contrast, it is required by law to recycle back in my home New Jersey. This truth astonished me, but more importantly, it encouraged me to seek change.I meant to make a difference. Through joint efforts, my classmates and I ended up starting the Green Club at the University of Louisiana. It focuses on creating a green attitude within the university and the greater Monroe area. While working on it, I met a group of ambitious high school students, who shared the same concern about the environment as us. While talking, we decided that working together would benefit not only the organizations at our schools, but also the community as a whole. If we let the community know we are serious, there is an even better chance that we will succeed and influence others. If you are hesitant to volunteer or help out with an event in your community, my recommendation is to go ahead and do it. Even if it may be out of your comfort zone, it is important to put yourself out there. At the end of the day, you miss all of the shots you don’t take.4. What surprised the author greatly?A. To force themselves.C. To believe themselves.D. To challenge themselves.CA few years ago, I had an “aha!” moment regarding handwriting. I had in my handa sheet of paper with handwritten instructions on it for some sort of editorial task. It occurred at first that I did not recognize the handwriting, and then I realized whose it must be. I finally became aware of the fact that I had been working with this colleague for at least a year, maybe two, and yet I did not recognize her handwriting at that point. It was a very important event in the computerization of life--a sign that was the informal. Friendly communication of people working together in an office had changed from notes in pen to instant messages and emails. There was a time when our workdays were fi lled with little letters, and we recognized one another’s handwriting the way we knew voices or faces. As a child visiting my father’s office, I was pleased to recognize, in little notes on the desks of his staff, the same handwriting I would see at home in the notes he would leave on the fridge—except that those notes were signed “dad” instead of “RFW”.All this has been on my mind because of the talk about The Rise and Fall of Handwriting, a book by Florey. She shows in her book a deep concern about the fall of handwriting and the failure of schools to teach children to write well, but many others argue that people in a digital age can’t be expected to learn to hold a pen.I don’t buy it.I don’t want to see anyone cut off from the expressive, personal ass ociations that a pen still promotes better than a digital keyboard does. For many a biographer, part of really getting to know their subjects is learning to read their handwriting. What some people advocate is teaching one of the many attractive handwritings based on the handwriting of 16th-century Italy. That may sound impossibly grand---as if they want kids to learn to draw by copying classical paintings. However, they have worked in many school systems.8. Why was the author surprised at not recognizing his colleague’s handwriting?A. He had worked with his colleague long enough.B. His colleague’s handwriting was so beautiful.C. His colleague’s handwriting was so terrible.D. He still had a lot of work to do.9. What did people working together in an office use to do?A. To talk more about handwriting.B. To take more notes on workdays.C. To know better one another’s handwriting.D. To communicate better with one another.10. According to the author, handwritten notes _________________ .A. are harder to teach in schoolsB. attract more attentionC. are used only between friendsD. carry more message11. What can we learn from the passage about the author?A. He thinks it impossible to teach handwriting.B. He does not want to lose handwriting.C. He puts the blame on the computer.D. He does not agree with Florey.DMoney is the root of all evil (邪恶) and new study claims there may be some truth behind the saying. Scientists at the University of California Berkeley, US, announced on February 27 that rich people are more likely to do immoral things, such as lie or cheat, than poorer people. The scientists did a series of eight experiments. They published their findings online in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNA《美国国家科学院院刊》).They carried out the first two experiments from the sidewalk near Berkeley. They noted that drivers of newer and more expensive cars were more likely to cut off other cars and pedestrians at crosswalks. Nearly 45 percent of people driving expensive cars ignored a pedestrian compared with only 30 percent of people driving new modest cars.In another experiment, a group of college students was asked if they would doimmoral things in various everyday situations. Examples included taking printer paper from work and not telling a salesperson when he or she gave back more change. Students from higher — class families were more likely to act dishonestly.According to the scientists, rich people often think money can get them out of trouble. This makes them less afraid to take risks, and it also means they care less about other people’s feelings. Finally, it just makes them greedier. “Higher wealth status seems to make you want even more, and that increased want leads you to bend the rules or break the rules to serve your self- interest,” said Paul Piff, lead scientist of the study.Piff pointed out that the findings don’t mean that all rich people are untrustworthy or all poor people honest. He said the experiments were to show how people living in different social situations express their instincts(本能)and values in different ways.12. By saying “money is the root of all evil”, the author wants to ____ .A. link wealth with bad behaviorB. draw readers’ attention to the researchC. show how the saying proves the findingsD. defend rich people who do immoral things13. According to the scientists, which is NOT the factor that makes rich people immoral?A. They welcome risks.B. They have more desires.C. They believe money talks.D. They become more selfish.14. Why did the scientists do the experiments?A. To show how social status affects people’s morality.B. To show people’s instincts and values in different ways.C. To test whether the saying “money is the root of all evil” is true.D. To show the difference between higher - class people and lower - class people.15. What does the passage really want to show us?A. The poor are respectable.B. Money is the root of all evil.C. All rich people are untrustworthy.D. The rich are more likely to act badly.第二节(共 5 小题,每小题 2 分,满分 10 分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。

Then the dogs are sent out to run around and spread as many seeds as they can. When they return, she rewards them with snacks, fills up their bags and sends them out on another run.Torres, who trains the dogs not to attack any wild animal while on seed spreading tasks, thinks border shepherd dogs are perfectly suited for the job, because of their intelligence, energy and speed. They’ve learned that they have to empty their bags in order to receive their tasty reward when they return, and can cover much more ground。

I had in my hand a sheet of paper with handwritten instructions on it for some sort of editorial task. There was a time when our workdays were filled with little letters, and we recognized one another’s handwriting the way we knew voices or faces. As a child visiting my father’s office, I was pleased to recognize, in little notes on the desks of hisstaff, the same handwriting I would see at home in the notes he would leave on the fridge—except that those notes were signed “dad” instead of “RFW”.All this has been on my mind because of the talk about The Rise and Fall of Handwriting, a book by Florey. She shows in her book a deep concern about the fall of handwriting and the failure of schools to teach children to write well, but many others argue that people in a digital age can’t be expected to learn to hold a pen.I don’t buy it.I don’t want to see anyone cut off from the expressive, personal associations tha t a pen still promotes better than a digital keyboard does. Why was the author surprised at not recognizing his colleagu e’s handwriting?A. While working on it, I met a group of ambitious high school students, who shared the same concern about the environment as us. While talking, we decided that working together would benefit not only the organizations at our schools, but also the community as a whole. If we let the community know we are serious, there is an even better chance that we will succeed and influence others. If you are hesitant to volunteer or help out with an event in your community,my recommendation is to go ahead and do it. Even if it may be out of your comfort zone, it is important to put yourself out there. At the end of the day, you miss all of the s hots you don’t take.4. What surprised the author greatly?A. Louisiana’s lack of environmental laws.B. Louisiana’s limited access to recycling.C. New Jersey’s legal requirement of recycling.D. New Jersey’s great advantage over Louisiana.5. What is the Green Club is intended to?A. To offer part-time jobs for high school students.B. To appeal for an environmentally-friendly lifestyle.C. To make university life in the Monroe area colorful.D. To help with community events in the Monroe area.6. What did the high school students and the author agree on?A. The need to co-operate.B. The importance of recycling.C. The possibility to succeed.D. The drawbacks of seriousness.7. What does the author suggest the potential volunteers should do?A. To praise themselves.B. To force themselves.C. To believe themselves.D. To challenge themselves.CA few years ago, I had an “aha!” moment regarding handwriting. I had in my hand a sheet of paper with handwritten instructions on it for some sort of editorial task. It occurred at first that I did not recognize the handwriting, and then I realized whose it must be. I finally became aware of the fact that I had been working withthis colleague for at least a year, maybe two, and yet I did not recognize her handwriting at that point. It was a very important event in the computerization of life--a sign that was the informal. Friendly communication of people working together in an office had changed from notes in pen to instant messages and emails. There was a time when our workdays were filled with little letters, and we recognized one another’s handwriting the way we knew voices or faces. She shows in her book a deep concern about the fall of handwriting and the failure of schools to teach children to write well, but many others argue t hat people in a digital age can’t be expected to learn to hold a pen.I don’t buy it.I don’t want to see anyone cut off from the expressive, personal associations that a pen still promotes better than a digital keyboard does. His colleague’s hand writing was so beautiful.C. His colleague’s handwriting was so terrible.D. He still had a lot of work to do.9. What did people working together in an office use to do?A. To talk more about handwriting.B. To take more notes on workdays.C. To know bett er one another’s handwriting.D. Nearly 45 percent of people driving expensive cars ignored a pedestrian compared with only 30 percent of people driving new modest cars.In another experiment, a group of college students was asked if they would do immoral things in various everyday situations. To sh ow people’s instincts and values in different ways.C.
