Time spent in a bookshop can be most enjoyable, whether you are a book-lover or merely there to buy a book as a present. You may even have entered the shop just to find shelter from a sudden shower. Whatever the reason is, you can soon become totally unaware of your surroundings. You soon become lost in some books or others, and usually it is only much later that you realize you have spent too much time there and must get away to keep some forgotten work.
This opportunity to escape from the realities of everyday life is the main attraction of a bookshop . A music shop is very much like a bookshop. You can wander around such places to your heart’s content. If it is a good shop, no assistant will approach you with the usual greeting “Can I help you?” You needn’t buy anything you don’t want. In a booksh op an assistant should remain in the background until you have finished reading. Then, and only then, are his services necessary.
Once a medical student had to read a textbook which was far too expensive for him to buy. He couldn’t get it from the library and the only copy he could find was in a certain bookshop. Every afternoon, therefore, he would go along to the shop and read a little of the book at a time. One day, however, he was disappointed to find the book missing from its usual place. He was about to leave, when he noticed the owner of the shop waving to him. Expecting to be told off, he went towards him. To his surprise, the owner pointed to the book which was hidden away in the corner. “ I put it there in case anyone wanted to buy it!” said the ow ner, and the owner left the delighted student to continue his reading.
56. You may spend a long time in a bookshop because ___________.

Do you like to turn off the lights and heaters when you go out of a room? In 2040 it will not matter. They will turn themselves off and on again when you return. You will choose the temperature for each room, the lighting and humidity. A sensor will find the presence of a human and turn the systems on, and when the humans leave it will turn them off again.
The sensors will work through the central home computer, and they will do much more than just turn the fires and lights on and off for you. They will find faulty electrical appliances (电器), plugs or switches, separate them so that they cannot harm anyone, and then warn you that they need repair. They will detect (发现)fire, and if you are out of the house, the computer will call the fire brigade(消防队). It will not be too difficult because the locks on the outside doors will be electronic. You will open them using your personal card——the one you use for shopping ——maybe using a number only known to you.
It will be impossible to lose the key, and a housebreaker will have to tamper (拨弄) with the lock or with the window.
The computer will be more than a fireman-policeman –servant. It will be an entertainer, and most of your entertainment will come right into your house. It does now, of course, but by 2040“entertainment”will mean much more. For one thing, you will be able to take part actively, rather than just watching.

Different countries and different people have different manners. We must find out their customs, so that they will not think us ill-mannered. Here are some examples of the things that a well-mannered person does or does not do.
If you visit a Chinese family you should knock at the door first. When the door opens, you’ll not move before the host says“Come in , please.” After you enter the room, you wouldn’t sit down until the host asks you to take a seat. When a cup of tea is put on a tea-table before you or sent to your hand, you’ll say,“ Than k you. ”and receive it with your two hands, not one hand, or they will think you are ill-mannered. Before entering a house in Japan, it is good manners to take off your shoes. In European countries, even though shoes sometimes become very dirty, this is not done. In a Malay house, a guest never finishes the food on the table. He leaves a little to show that he has had enough. In England, a guest always finishes a drink or the food to show that he has enjoyed it. This will make the host, especially the hostess, pleased.

Retirement is the time to enjoy your hobbies and interest actively. A hobby not
only gives a certain direction to the life of a retired individual but also allows him to relax and experience joy.
Reading is one of the most common hobbies that retired people pursue. Not only does it transport you to a different world, but reading is also a form of relaxation. Reading broadens your scope of knowledge and also builds your vocabulary.
Bird watching is another interesting hobby loved by many retired people. There are many clubs that you can join through which you can enjoy learning about different kinds of birds. Many people watch birds and then write down their experience along with pictures of various birds.
Sky gazing or star gazing is a hobby that many senior citizens like to pursue. Before you pursue your hobby , it is wise to read some books about astronomy (天文学) and space. You can also surf the Internet and learn about the basics of astronomy. You can also visit a planetarium (天文馆) which is a great place to learn more about stars, and the solar system. Once you have a basic understanding of the sky, you can join sky/ star gazing clubs or buy a telescope through which you can get the best view of the sky.
Reading and writing poems can also be a good hobby to choose. You can pursue your hobby by reading a few famous classic poems. Writing your thoughts down also helps you to write good poems. Studying poetry, understanding it and reading more and more poems is the way people can develop this hobby and gain more joy than getting your work published.
Age is never a limit to learning anything new. Develop a child-like curiosity and learn to develop your hobbies so that you can have fun.

Directions: Read the following passage. Answer the questions according to the information given in the passage and the required words limit. (5 marks)
“To say that this is a dream which has come true isn’t really good enough, because this is too big and it feels wonderful .” 35-year-old Sammy Gitau said on his graduation ceremony. Sammy received his master’s degree from Manchester University, one of Britain’s top educational institutions. To get there, Sammy took a journey far greater than the 4,400 miles between Manchester and the Kenyan Slum(肯尼亚贫民窟) where he lived a life of extreme poverty.
Sammy’s formal schooling was limited to just a few years. His father was killed when Sammy was 13. To support his mother and 10 brothers and sisters, Sammy turned to drug dealing (贩毒) . Then, one day, while searching in the garbage in a middle class suburb, Sammy found something more valuable than gold: a Manchester University booklet. He dreamed that one day he would be able to study there. Though it was much too large a dream for him at that time , Sammy wanted to give it a try.
Sammy decided to change. He created anti-drug projects and community resource centers. With a handful of volunteers he taught special skills, including carpentry(木工), baking and tailoring, helping 20,000 Kenyan slum kids along the way.
Sammy’s work caught the attention of international development organizations, which started to offer him advice and resources. To one of the Europeans he worked with, he talked about the dream that he had put on the shelf long ago. His friend helped contact Manchester University’s Dr. Pete Mann.
The university offered Sammy’s scholarship and he worked very hard to complete his education.
Last week, when Sammy received his master’s degree in international development project management, Dr. Mann said, “ It really is a remarkable achievement.”
Sammy Gitau, a once dead-end kid who had a dream, sees it this way: “ We have people in the slums that are just like me. Now they can say, “I want to become like Sammy, or go further .” Now they know that they can dream big.”
