读写教程第四册Unit4课文详解21世纪大学英语导语:大学的压力不比高考时候的压力少,因为要面对更多的东西,下面是一篇关于大学压力的英语课文,欢迎大家学习。
College PressuresWilliam ZinsserI am master of Branford College at Yale. I live on the campus and know the students well. (We have 485 of them.) I listen to their hopes and fears — and also to their stereo music and their piercing cries in the dead of night ("Does anybody care?"). They come to me to ask how to get through the rest of their lives.Mainly I try to remind them that the road ahead is a long one and that it will have more unexpected turns than they think. There will be plenty of time to change jobs, change careers, change whole attitudes and approaches. They don't want to hear such news. They want a map — right now — that they can follow directly to career security, financial security, social security and, presumably, a prepaid grave. What I wish for all students is some release from the grim grip of the future. I wish them a chance to enjoy each segment of their education as an experience in itself and not as a tiresome requirement in preparation for the next step. I wish them the right to experiment, to trip and fall, to learn that defeat is as educational as victory and is not the end of the world. My wish, of course, is naive. One of the few rights that America does not proclaim is the right to fail. Achievement is the national god, worshipped in our media —the million-dollar athlete, the wealthy executive —and glorified in our praise of possessions. In the presence of such a potent state religion, the young are growing up old.I see four kinds of pressure working on college students today: economic pressure, parental pressure, peer pressure, and self-induced pressure. It's easy to look around for bad guys — to blame the colleges for charging too much money, the professors for assigning too much work, the parents for pushing their children too far, the students for driving themselves too hard. But there are no bad guys, only victims.Today it is not unusual for a student, even one who works part time at college and full time during the summer, to have accumulated $5,000 in loans after four years —loans that the student must start to repay within one year after graduation (and incidentally, not all these loans are low-interest, as many non-students believe). Encouraged at the commencement ceremony to go forth into the world, students are already behind as they go forth. How can they not feel under pressure throughout college to prepare for this day of reckoning? Women at Yale are under even more pressure than men to justify their expensive education to themselves, their parents, and society. For although they leave college superbly equipped to bring fresh leadership to traditionally male jobs, society hasn't yet caught up with this fact.Along with economic pressure goes parental pressure. Inevitably, the two are deeply intertwined. I see students taking premedical courses with joyless determination. They go off to their labs as if they were going to the dentist. It saddens me because I know them in other corners of their life as cheerful people."Do you want to go to medical school?" I ask them."I guess so," they say, without conviction, or, "Not really.""Then why are you going?""My parents want me to be a doctor. They're paying all thismoney and..."Peer pressure and self-induced pressure are also intertwined, and they begin from the very start of freshman year. "I had a freshman student I'll call Linda," one instructor told me, "who came in and said she was under terrible pressure because her roommate, Barbara, was much brighter and studied all the time.I couldn't tell her that Barbara had come in two hours earlier to say the same thing about Linda."The story is almost funny —except that it's not. It's a symptom of all the pressures put together. When every student thinks every other student is working harder and doing better, the only solution is to study harder still. I see students going off to the library every night after dinner and coming back when it closes at midnight. I wish they could sometimes forget about their peers and go to a movie. I hear the rattling of typewriters in the hours before dawn. I see the tension in their eyes when exams are approaching and papers are due: "Will I get everything done?"Probably they won't. They will get sick. They will sleep. They will oversleep. They will bug out.I've painted too grim a portrait of today's students, making them seem too solemn. That's only half of their story; the other half is that these students are nice people, and easy to like. They're quick to laugh and to offer friendship. They're more considerate of one another than any student generation I've ever known. If I've described them primarily as driven creatures who largely ignore the joyful side of life, it's because that's where the problem is —not only at Yale but throughout American education. It's why I think we should all be worried about the values that are nurturing a generation so fearful of risk and sogoal-obsessed at such an early age.I tell students that there is no one "right" way to get ahead —that each of them is a different person, starting from a different point and bound for a different destination. I tell them that change is healthy and that people don't have to fit into pre-arranged slots. One of my ways of telling them is to invite men and women who have achieved success outside the academic world to come and talk informally with my students during the year. I invite heads of companies, editors of magazines, politicians, Broadway producers, artists, writers, economists, photographers, scientists, historians — a mixed bag of achievers.I ask them to say a few words about how they got started. The students always assume that they started in their present profession and knew all along that it was what they wanted to do. But in fact, most of them got where they are by a circuitous route, after many side trips. The students are startled. They can hardly conceive of a career that was not preplanned. They can hardly imagine allowing the hand of God or chance to lead them down some unforeseen trail.New Wordscampusn. the grounds of a university, college or school; a university 大学校园,学校校园;大学piercinga. 学生的自理能力英语专四作文Here is an essay on the topic of "Student's Self-care Ability" with a word count of over 1000 words, written in English without any additional title or punctuation marks in the body of the text.Self-care is a crucial aspect of personal development for students. It encompasses the ability to independently manage one's daily activities, make responsible decisions, and maintain a healthy lifestyle. As students navigate the academic landscape, cultivating self-care skills can significantly contribute to their overall well-being, academic success, and future employability. One of the primary benefits of developing self-care abilities is the enhancement of time management skills. Students who can effectively organize their schedules, prioritize tasks, and balance academic and extracurricular responsibilities are more likely to achieve their goals and avoid burnout. This ability to manage time efficiently not only improves academic performance but also prepares students for the demands of the professional world where time management is a highly valued skill. Moreover, self-care fosters a sense of independence andresponsibility. When students take charge of their personal care, such as maintaining proper hygiene, preparing nutritious meals, and managing their finances, they develop a greater understanding of the importance of self-reliance. This independence can boost their confidence, decision-making abilities, and problem-solving skills, all of which are essential for successful transitions into adulthood.Additionally, self-care encompasses the management of physical and mental health. Students who prioritize their well-being by engaging in regular exercise, getting adequate sleep, and seeking support for mental health concerns are better equipped to handle the stresses and challenges of academic life. This holistic approach to self-care not only enhances academic performance but also promotes overall life satisfaction and resilience.Furthermore, the development of self-care skills can have a positive impact on students' social and emotional well-being. By learning to manage their own needs, students can develop a greater sense of self-awareness and empathy, which can lead to stronger interpersonal relationships and more effective communication with peers, faculty, and family members. This, in turn, can contribute to a more positive and supportive learning environment.Another crucial aspect of self-care is the ability to manage stress and emotions effectively. Students who can identify and address theirstress triggers, practice stress-management techniques, and seek help when needed are more likely to maintain a healthy balance between academic demands and personal well-being. This skill set not only enhances academic performance but also prepares students for the challenges they may face in their future careers.Additionally, self-care skills can foster a sense of personal agency and resilience. When students take an active role in their own well-being, they develop a stronger sense of control over their lives and a greater ability to adapt to change. This resilience can be particularly valuable in the face of academic setbacks, personal challenges, or unexpected life events. Moreover, the development of self-care abilities can have a lasting impact on students' future employability. Employers often seek candidates who demonstrate self-awareness, initiative, and the ability to manage their own needs and responsibilities. By cultivating self-care skills, students can develop these desirable traits, making them more attractive to potential employers and increasing their chances of success in the job market. In conclusion, the importance of self-care for students cannot be overstated. By developing the ability to independently manage their daily activities, maintain their physical and mental health, and navigate the challenges of academic life, students can unlock awealth of benefits that will serve them well both in the present and in their future endeavors. As students embark on their educational journeys, it is crucial that they prioritize the development of self-care skills, which will not only contribute to their academic success but also prepare them for the demands of the professional world and the responsibilities of adulthood.。

新世界交互英语读写译4第二版3单元作文The world we live in today is a complex and ever-evolving landscape filled with both challenges and opportunities. As we navigate the complexities of modern life, it is essential that we approach the future with a sense of purpose, resilience, and a willingness to adapt to the changing tides. Whether we are tackling global issues such as climate change, poverty, or social inequality, or focusing on more personal goals and aspirations, the ability to think critically, problem-solve, and continuously learn and grow is paramount. One of the most pressing challenges facing our world today is the ongoing threat of climate change. The scientific evidence is clear: the Earth's climate is changing at an unprecedented rate, driven largely by human activities such as the burning of fossil fuels, deforestation, and the release of greenhouse gases. The consequences of these changes are already being felt in the form of rising sea levels, more frequent and intense natural disasters, and the disruption of ecosystems and food production. As individuals and as a global community, we must take decisive action to mitigate the impact of climate change and work towards a more sustainable future. This will require a multifaceted approach that encompasseseverything from renewable energy development and sustainable agriculture to the protection of natural habitats and the promotion of more environmentally-conscious consumer behaviors. It will also require a fundamental shift in the way we think about our relationship with the natural world, moving away from a mindset of exploitation and toward one of stewardship and preservation.Another key challenge facing our world is the persistent problem of poverty and inequality. Despite the tremendous economic progress made in recent decades, millions of people around the globe continue to live in abject poverty, lacking access to basic necessities such as food, clean water, healthcare, and education. This not only represents a profound moral failing but also a significant obstacle to global stability and prosperity.Addressing this challenge will require a concerted effort on the part of governments, international organizations, and civil society to develop and implement effective poverty alleviation strategies. This may include investments in sustainable development, the expansion of social safety nets, and the promotion of inclusive economic growth that creates opportunities for all. It will also require a deeper understanding of the complex and interrelated factors that contribute to poverty, such as systemic discrimination, lack of access to resources, and the impact of conflict and natural disasters. In addition to these global challenges, individuals and communities around the world also face a range of more personal challenges and aspirations. Whether it is pursuing a fulfilling career, starting a family, or realizing a long-held dream, the ability to set clear goals, develop a plan of action, and persist in the face of adversity is essential. This process of personal growth and self-actualization is not always easy, and it often requires us to confront our fears, challenge our assumptions, and step outside of our comfort zones. It may involve developing new skills, taking on new responsibilities, or navigating complex interpersonal relationships. However, the rewards of this journey can be immense as we discover new facets of ourselves, deepen our understanding of the world around us, and ultimately make a positive impact on the lives of those around us.Underlying all of these challenges and aspirations is the fundamental human need for connection, meaning, and purpose. As social beings, we crave a sense of belonging and the opportunity to contribute to something greater than ourselves. Whether it is through our work, our relationships, or our involvement in our communities, the ability to find purpose and meaning in our lives is essential to our overall well-being and happiness. This pursuit of meaning and purpose is not always straightforward, and it may require us to confront our own biases, assumptions, andpreconceptions. It may also involve grappling with complex philosophical and existential questions about the nature of reality, the meaning of life, and our place in the grand scheme of things. However, by engaging in this process of self-reflection and inquiry, we can gain a deeper understanding of ourselves and the world around us. We can develop a greater sense of empathy and compassion, and find ways to contribute to the greater good in ways that are meaningful and fulfilling to us.Ultimately, the challenges and aspirations that we face as individuals and as a global community are multifaceted and complex. They require us to think critically, problem-solve, and continuously learn and grow. But by approaching these challenges with a sense of purpose, resilience, and a willingness to adapt, we can not only overcome the obstacles that stand in our way, but also unlock new possibilities and opportunities for ourselves and for the world around us.。

I decided to make a plan to make sure everything went smoothly. First, I made myself a list of things I needed to do. The list included tasks like finishing my homework, tidying up my room, and feeding our pet cat, Whiskers.I started with my homework. I set up a cozy study corner and turned on some soft music to help me concentrate. It felt nice to have the freedom to choose my own study environment. I finished my assignments without any distractions and felt proud of myself.Next, I moved on to tidying up my room. I put away my toys, organized my books, and made my bed. It felt good to have a clean and tidy space. I even found some old toys that I had forgotten about, so I played with them for a while. Being home alone allowed me to explore and rediscover things in my own way. Then, it was time to take care of Whiskers. I made sure she had enough food and water in her bowls. I also spent some time playing with her using her favorite toy, the laser pointer. Whiskers seemed happy and content, and it made me happy too. After finishing my tasks, I had some free time. I decided to make myself a sandwich for lunch. I felt so independent making my own meal. I even tried a new recipe by adding some avocado to my sandwich, and it was delicious! Being home alone gave me the chance to try new things and discover my own abilities. As the afternoon went on, I started feeling a little lonely. I missed my family and wished they would come back soon. Todistract myself, I decided to watch my favorite cartoon. I made a big bowl of popcorn and snuggled up on the couch. Although I enjoyed the show, I couldn't help but glance at the clock from time to time, eagerly waiting for my family's return. Finally, the moment arrived when I heard the front door opening. I was so happy to see my parents and brother again! I quickly told them about my day and everything I had accomplished while they were away. They were proud of me for being responsible and taking care of things on my own.Being home alone was a big adventure for me. It taught me that I am capable of handling responsibilities and making decisions. It also made me appreciate the love and support of my family even more. I now understand that being independent is important, but having loved ones around makes everything even better. That's the end of my story about being home alone. I hope you enjoyed hearing about my little adventure. Thank you for listening!篇2Home AloneHi, everyone! My name is Lily, and I'm in the ninth grade. The Magic of Problem-SolvingIn the journey of life, we are constantly faced with various challenges and problems. The fourth unit of our eighth-grade English textbook, published by Shanghai Education Edition, focuses on the importance of problem-solving, teaching us how to approach and overcome obstacles. This unit has left a deep impression on me, as it not only enhances my understanding of problem-solving strategies but also inspires me to apply them in real-life situations. The unit begins with a discussion on the differenttypes of problems we may encounter, from minor daily inconveniences to more complex issues. It highlights the need to identify the root cause of the problem and to formulate a plan of action. This approach is crucial in ensuring that we address the issue effectively rather than merely treating the symptoms. One of the key lessons I learned from this unit is the importance of maintaining a positive attitude when facing problems. It reminds me that every challenge presents an opportunity for growth and learning. By approachingproblems with a positive mindset, we can turn obstaclesinto stepping stones that lead us to new heights. Moreover, the unit emphasizes the role of collaboration in problem-solving. It teaches us that by working together, we can pool our resources, share ideas, and find innovative solutions that might not be apparent to us individually. This concept is particularly relevant in today's world, where teamwork and collaboration are essential for success. In addition to these principles, the unit also introduces practical problem-solving techniques such as brainstorming and mind mapping. These tools help us to organize our thoughts and generate creative ideas that can lead to effective solutions. By applying these techniques, I have found that I am able to tackle problems more efficiently and with greater confidence. The final part of the unit focuses on evaluating the success of our solutions. It teaches us to assess the effectiveness of our approach and to make necessary adjustments if the initial plan does not yield desired results. This iterative process helps us to continuously improve and refine our problem-solving skills.Overall, the fourth unit of our eighth-grade English textbook has been a valuable learning experience for me. It has not only equipped me with the knowledge and skills necessary for effective problem-solving but has alsoinstilled in me a positive mindset and a spirit of collaboration. These lessons will serve me well in the future, as I continue to navigate the challenges and opportunities that life brings.**解决问题的魔力**在人生的旅途中,我们不断面临各种挑战和问题。

(Abstract) Keywords—component; formatting; style; styling; insert (key words)I. Introduction (H EADING 1)This template, modified in MS Word 2007 and saved as a “Word 97-2003 Document” for the PC, provides authors with most of the formatting specifications needed for preparing electronic versions of their papers. All standard paper components have been specified for three reasons: (1) ease of use when formatting individual papers, (2) automatic compliance to electronic requirements that facilitate the concurrent or later production of electronic products, and (3) conformity of style throughout a conference proceedings. Margins, column widths, line spacing, and type styles are built-in; examples of the type styles are provided throughout this document and are identified in italic type, within parentheses, following the example. Some components, such as multi-leveled equations, graphics, and tables are not prescribed, although the various table text styles are provided. The formatter will need to create these components, incorporating the applicable criteria that follow.II.Ease of UseA.Selecting a Template (Heading 2)First, confirm that you have the correct template for your paper size. This template has been tailored for output on the A4 paper size. If you are using US letter-sized paper, please close this file an d download the file “MSW_USltr_format”.B.Maintaining the Integrity of the SpecificationsThe template is used to format your paper and style the text. All margins, column widths, line spaces, and text fonts are prescribed; please do not alter them. You may note peculiarities. For example, the head margin in this template measures proportionately more than is customary. This measurement and others are deliberate, using specifications that anticipate your paper as one part of the entire proceedings, and not as an independent document. Please do not revise any of the current designations.III.Prepare Your Paper BeforeStylingBefore you begin to format your paper, first write and save the content as a separate text file. Keep your text and graphic files separate until after the text has been formatted and styled. Do not use hard tabs, and limit use of hard returns to only one return at the end of a paragraph. Do not add any kind ofpagination anywhere in the paper. Do not number text heads-the template will do that for you. Finally, complete content and organizational editing before formatting. Please take note of the following items when proofreading spelling and grammar:A.Abbreviations and AcronymsDefine abbreviations and acronyms the first time they are used in the text, even after they have been defined in the abstract. Abbreviations such as IEEE, SI, MKS, CGS, sc, dc, and rms do not have to be defined. Do not use abbreviations in the title or heads unless they are unavoidable.B.UnitsUse either SI (MKS) or CGS as primary units. (SI units are encouraged.) English units may be used assecondary units (in parentheses). An exception wouldbe the use of English units as identifiers in trade, suchas “3.5-inch disk drive.”Avoid combining SI and CGS units, such as current in amperes and magnetic field in oersteds. This oftenleads to confusion because equations do not balancedimensionally. If you must use mixed units, clearlystate the units for each quantity that you use in anequation.Do not mix complete spellings and abbreviations of units: “Wb/m2” or “webers per square meter,” not“webers/m2.” Spell units when they appear in text: “...afew henries,” not “...a few H.”Identify applicable sponsor/s here. If no sponsors, delete this text box (sponsors).Use a zero befor e decimal points: “0.25,” not “.25.” Use “cm3,” not “cc.” (bullet list ) C. EquationsThe equations are an exception to the prescribed specifications of this template. You will need to determine whether or not your equation should be typed using either the Times New Roman or the Symbol font (please no other font). To create multileveled equations, it may be necessary to treat the equation as a graphic and insert it into the text after your paper is styled.Number equations consecutively. Equation numbers, within parentheses, are to position flush right, as in (1), using a right tab stop. To make your equations more compact, you may use the solidus ( / ), the exp function, or appropriate exponents. Italicize Roman symbols for quantities and variables, but not Greek symbols. Use a long dash rather than a hyphen for a minus sign. Punctuate equations with commas or periods when they are part of a sentence, as ina +b = γ(1)α + β = χ. (1) (1)Note that the equation is centered using a center tab stop. Be sure that the symbols in your equation have been defined before or immediately following the equation. Use “(1),” not “Eq. (1)” or “equation (1),” except at the beginning of a sentence: “Equation (1) is ...”D. Some Common MistakesThe word “data” is plural, not s ingular. The subscript for the permeability of vacuum μ0, and other common scientific constants, is zero with subscript formatting, not a lowercase letter “o.” ? In American English, commas, semi-/colons, periods, question and exclamation marks are located within quotation marks only when a complete thought or name is cited, such as a title or full quotation. When quotation marks are used, instead of a bold or italic typeface, to highlight a word or phrase, punctuation should appear outside of the quotation marks. A parenthetical phrase or statement at the end of a sentence is punctuated outside of the closing parenthesis (like this). (A parenthetical sentence is punctuated within the parentheses.) ? A graph within a graph is an “inset,” not an “insert.” The word alternatively is preferred to the word “alternately” (unless you really mean something that alternates). ? Do not use the word “essentially” t o mean “approximately” or “effectively.” ? In your paper title, if the words “that uses” can accurately replace the word using, capitalize the “u”; if not, keep using lower-cased.Be aware of the different meanings of the homophones “affect” and “effect,” “complement” and “compliment,” “discreet” and “discrete,” “principal” and “principle.” ? Do not confuse “imply” and “infer.”The prefix “non” is not a word; it should be joined to the word it modifies, usually without a hyphen. ? There is no period after t he “et” in the Latin abbreviation “et al.” ? The abbreviation “i.e.” means “that is,” and the abbreviation “e.g.” means “for example.” An excellent style manual for science writers is [7].IV.Using the TemplateAfter the text edit has been completed, the paper is ready for the template. Duplicate the template file by using the Save Ascommand, and use the naming convention prescribed by your conference for the name of your paper. In this newly created file, highlight all of the contents and import your prepared text file. You are now ready to style your paper; use the scroll down window on the left of the MS Word Formatting toolbar.A. Authors and AffiliationsThe template is designed so that author affiliations are not repeated each time for multiple authors of the same affiliation. Please keep your affiliations as succinct as possible (for example, do not differentiate among departments of the same organization). This template was designed for two affiliations. 1) For author/s of only one affiliation (Heading 3): To change the default, adjust the template as follows.a) Selection (Heading 4): Highlight all author and affiliation lines.b) Change number of columns: Select the Columns icon from the MS Word Standard toolbar and then select “1 Column” from the selection palette.c) Deletion: Delete the author and affiliation lines for the second affiliation.2) For author/s of more than two affiliations: T o change the default, adjust the template as follows.a) Selection: Highlight all author and affiliation lines. b) Change number of columns: Select the “Columns” icon from the MS Word Standard toolbar and then select “1 Column” from the selection palette.c) Highlight author and affiliation lines of affiliation 1 and copy this selection.d) Formatting: Insert one hard return immediately after the last character of the last affiliation line. Then paste down the copyof affiliation 1. Repeat as necessary for each additional affiliation.e)Reassign number of columns: Place your cursor to the right of the last character of the last affiliation line of an even numbered affiliation (e.g., if there are five affiliations, place your cursor at end of fourth affiliation). Drag the cursor up to highlight all of the above author and affiliation lines. Go to Column icon and se lect “2 Columns”. If you have an odd number of affiliations, the final affiliation will be centered on the page; all previous will be in two columns.B.Identify the HeadingsHeadings, or heads, are organizational devices that guide the reader through your paper. There are two types: component heads and text heads.Component heads identify the different components of your paper and are not topically subordinate to each other. Examples include ACKNOWLEDGMENTS and REFERENCES, and for these, the correct style t o use is “Heading 5.” Use “figure caption” for your Figure captions, and “table head” for your table title. Run-in heads, such as “Abstract,” will require you t o apply a style (in this case, italic) in addition to the style provided by the drop down menu to differentiate the head from the text.Text heads organize the topics on a relational, hierarchical basis. For example, the paper title is the primary text head because all subsequent material relates and elaborates on this one topic. If there are two or more sub-topics, the next level head (uppercase Roman numerals) should be used and, conversely, if there are not at least two sub-topics, then no subheads shoul d be introduced. Styles named “Heading 1,” “Heading 2,” “Heading 3,” and “Heading 4” are presc ribed.C.Figures and Tables1)Positioning Figures and Tables: Place figures and tables at the top and bottom of columns. Avoid placing them in the middle of columns. Large figures and tables may span across both columns. Figure captions should be below the figures; table heads should appear above the tables. Insert figures and tables after they are cited in the text. Use the abbreviation “Fig. 1,” even at the beginning of a sentence.TABLE I. T ABLE S TYLESSample of a Table footnote. (Table footnote)b. Fig. 1.Example of a figure caption. (figure caption)Figure Labels: Use 8 point Times New Roman for Figure labels. Use words rather than symbols or abbreviations when writing Figure axis labels to avoid confusing the reader. As an example, write the quantity “Magnetization,” or“Magnetization, M,” not just “M.” If including units in the label, present them within parentheses. Do not label axes only with units. In the example, write “Magnetization (A/m)” or “Magnetization (A ( m(1),” not just “A/m.” Do not lab el axes with a ratio of quantities and units. For example, write “Temperature (K),” not “Temperature/K.”Acknowledgment (H EADING 5) The preferred spelling of the word “acknowledgment” in America is without an “e” after the “g.” Avoid the stilted expression “one of us (R. B. G.) thanks ...”. Instead, try “R. B.G. thanks...”. Put sponsor acknowle dgments in the unnumbered footnote on the first page.ReferencesThe template will number citations consecutively within brackets [1]. The sentence punctuation follows the bracket [2].Refer simply to the reference number, as in [3]—do not use “Ref.[3]” or “reference [3]” except at the beginning of a sentence: “Reference [3] was the first ...”Number footnotes separately in superscripts. Place the actual footnote at the bottom of the column in which it was cited. Do not put footnotes in the reference list. Use letters for table footnotes.Unless there are six authors or more give all authors’ names; do not use “et al.”. Papers that have not been published, even if they have been submitted for publication, should be cited as “unpublished” [4].
