2016-2017学年高二上期中考试英语试卷(解析版)一、阅读理解1、阅读理解According to body language expert Robert Phipps, the way people sleep at night actually determines a lot about the type of personality they have. Phipps has identified four sleeping p ositions that affect personality.Phipps found that worriers, those who stress the most, tend to sleep in the fetal (胎儿的) position. He found that this is the most common bedtime p osition, with nearly 58 percent of people sleeping on their side with knees up and head down. The more we curl up (蜷曲), the more comfort we are seeking, according to Phipps. The second most common position is the log. Sleeping with a straight body, with arms at each side, as if they are standin g guard at Buckingham Palace, indicates stubbornness, and t hese people (the 28 percent who sleep this way) often wake u p stiffer than when they went to sleep.“The longer you sleep like this, the more rigid your thinking is and you can become inflexible, which means you make things harder for yourself,” according to Phipps.Yearner (向往) sleepers are next on the list. About 25 percent of people sl eep in this style—on their side with arms stretched out in front, looking as if they are either chasing a dream or perhaps being chased themsel ves. Yearners are typically their own worst critics, always exp ecting the best results, explained Phipps. These people often wake up refreshed and eager to face the challenges of the da y ahead.Perhaps the most peculiar (奇怪的) of sleep styles is the freefaller position. This sleep style m akes up 17 percent of the population. They sleep face down w ith arms stretched out. These people, according to Phipps, fe el like they have little control over their life. Not only is this the strangest of sleep styles, but also the least comfortable, and people may wake up feeling tired and have no energy.Inconclusion, Phipps has only one more thing to add: “A go od night's sleep set you up for the following day and our sleep ing positions can determine how we feel when we wake.”根据短文内容,选择最佳答案,并将选定答案的字母标号填在题前括号内。

AStill seeking a destination for your weekend break? There are some places which are probably a mere walk away from your college.King’s Art CentreA day at the Centre could mean a visit to an exhibition of the work of one of the most interesting contemporary artis ts on show anywhere. This weekend sees the opening of an e xhibition of four local artists. You could attend a class teaching you how to ‘learn from the masters’ or get more creative with paint – free of charge. The Centre also runs two life drawing classes for which there i s a small fee.The Botanic GardenThe Garden has over 8,000 plant species; it holds the researc h and teaching collection of living plants for Cambridge Univer sity. The multi-branched Torch Aloe here is impressive. Look for grass snakes in the lake. A snake called ‘Hissing Sid’ is regularly seen lying in the heat of the warm sun.Byron’s PoolMany stories surround Lord Byron’s time as a student of Cambridge University. Arriving in 1805, he wrote a letter complaining that it was a place of “mess and dr unkenness”. However, it seems as though Byron did manage to pass the time pleasantly enough. I’m not just talking about t he pet bear he kept in his rooms. He spent a great deal of tim e walking in the village. It is also said that on occasion Byron swam naked by moonlight in the lake, which is now known as Byron’s Pool. A couple of miles past Grantchester in the south Cambridgeshire countryside, the pool is surrounded by the fi elds. The cries of invisible birds make the trip a lovely experie nce and on the way home you can drop into the village for aft ernoon tea. If you don’t trust me, then perhaps you’ll take it fro m Virginia Woolf ,a famous writer,—over a century after Byron, she reportedly took a trip to swim i n the same pool.1.The main idea of the passage is __________.A. interesting stories of Lord. ByronB. an approach to becoming creative in artC. the colorful life in the countrysideD. some places for weekend break2.If you are a wildlife enthusiast, you’d better go to__________ .A. Byron’s Pool is a pleasant placeBWhen I lived in Spain, some Spanish friends of mine decided t o visit England by car. Before they left, they asked me for advi ce about how to find accommodation . I suggested that they s hould stay at ‘bed and breakfast’ houses, because this kind of place gives a foreign visitor a good chance to speak English with the family. My friends listened to my advice, but they cam e back with some funny stories“We didn’t stay at bed and breakfast houses,” they said, “b ecause we found most families were away on holiday.”I thought this was strange. Finally I understood what had h appened. My friends spoke little English, and they thought ‘VA CANCIES’ meant ‘holidays’, because the Spanish word for ‘h olidays’ is ‘vacaciones’. So they did not go to house where thesign outside said ‘VACANCLES’, which in English means the re are free rooms. Then my friends went to house where the s ign said ‘NO VACANCLES’, because they thought this meant the people who owned the house were not away on holiday. B ut they found that these houses were all full. As a result, they stayed at hotels! We laughed about this and about mistakes my friends mad e in reading other signs. In Spanish, the word ‘DIVERSION’ m eans fun. In English, it means that workmen are repairing the road, and that you must take a different road. When my friends saw the word ‘DIVER SION’ on a road sign, they thought they were going to have fu n. Instead, the road ended in a large hold.English people have problems too when they learn foreign languages. Once in Paris, wh en someone offered me some more coffee, I said “Thank you” in French. I meant that I would like some more. However, to my surprise, the coffee pot was taken away! Later I found out that “Thank you” in French means “No, thank you.”5. My Spanish friends wanted advice about ______.A. learning EnglishB. finding places to stay in EnglandC. driving their car on English roadsD. going to England by car6. ‘NO VACANCIES’ in English means ______.A. no free roomsB. free roomsC. not away on holid ayD. holidays7. When someone offered me more coffee and I said “Thank you” in French, I ______.A didn’t really want any more coffee B. wanted them t o take the coffee pot awayC. really wanted some more coffeeD. wanted to expr ess my politeness8. I was surprised when the coffee pot was taken away becau se I ______.A. hadn’t finished drinking my coffeeB. was expecting another cup of coffeeC. meant that I didn’t want any moreD. was never mis understoodCA warm drink of milk before bed has long been the best choic e for those wanting a good night’s sleep. But now a study has found it really does help people nod off(打盹)—if it is milked from a cow at night.Researchers have discovered that “night milk” contains moremelatonin, which has been proven to help people feel sleepy and reduce anxiety. The study, by researchers from Seoul, South Korea, involved mice being fed with dried milk powder made from cows milked both during the day and at night. Those given night milk, which contained 10 times the amount of melatonin, were less active and less anxious than those fed with the milk collected during daytime, ac cording to the study published in The Journal of Medicinal Fo od.Night milk quickened the start of sleep and caused the mice t o sleep longer. While the effect of cows milk harvested at different time has n ot been tested on humans up to now, taking melatonin drugs has been suggested to those who are struggling to fall asleep at night.Previous studies have also indicated that milk can be excellen t for helping sleep because of the calcium content, which help s people to relax.Milk is also sugar-free and additive-free with nutritionists recommending skimmed milk as the bes t choice before bed as it is the least fattening. The more fat yo u take in before bedtime, the greater burden you will put on your body at night.9. According to the text, the mice fed with daytime milk______ _.A. were more anxiousB. woke up laterC. were less activeD. started sleep more easily10. Night Milk and SleepDParents have to do much less for their children today than the y used to do,and home has become much less of a workshop. Clothes can be bought ready made; washing can go to the laundry; food c an be bought, cooked, canned or preserved; bread is baked and delivered by the baker; milk arrives on the doorstep; meats can be had at the rest aurant, the worker’s canteen, and the school dining-room. It is unusual now for father to pursue his trade or other emplo yment at home, and his children rarely,if ever, see him at his place of work. Nowadays boys are seldom train ed to follow their father’s occupation, and in many towns they have a fairly wide choice of employm en t and so do girls. The young wage-earner often earns good money, and soon acquires a feeling of economic independence. In textile(纺织物) areas it has long been customary for mothers to go out t o work, but this practice has become so widespread that the working mother is now a not unusual factor in a child’s home life, the number of married women in employment having more th an doubled in the last twenty-five years. With mother earning and his older children drawing substantial wages, father is seldom the dominant(占主导的) figure that he still was at the beginning of the century. W hen mother works, economic advantages increasing, but children lose something of great value if mother’s employ ment prevents her from being home to greet them when they return from school.12. The writer mentions home as workshop in the past becau se______.A. fathers often pursue employment at homeB. parents had to make food and necessity by themselv esC. many families produce goods at home for saleD. both fathers and mothers in most families are worker s13. The chief reason that boys are seldom trained to follow th eir father’s occupation is that ____.A. children rarely see their fathers at their place of workB. fathers do not like to pursue employment at homeC. there is a wide choice of employment for childrenD. children also like to have jobs and earn money outsid e14. What makes father no longer the only dominant person ina family?A. Mother’s and children’s earning enable them not just to depend on father for life.B. There are many choices of employment for mothersand children nowadays.C. Father does much less for his children and earn muc h less today than he used to.D. The number of married women in employment has in creased greatly now.15. What is the writer’s attitude towards the change at home ?A. Unacceptable.B. Worried.C. Unconcerned.D. AAs the pace of life continues to increase, we are fast losing the art of relaxation. Once you are in the habit of rushing through lift, being on the go from morning till night, it is hard to slow down. But relaxation is essential for a healthy mind and body.Stress is a natural part of everyday life and there is no way to avoid it. In fact, it is not the bad thing it is often supposed to be. A certain amount of stress is vital to provide motivation and give purpose to life. It is only when the stress gets out of control that it can lead to poor performance and ill health. The amount of stress a person can withstand depends very much on the individual. Some people are not afraid of stress, and such characters are obviously prime material for managerial responsibilities. Others lose heart at the first sign of unusual difficulties. When exposed to stress, in whatever form, we react both chemically and physically. In fact we make choice between "fight" or "flight" and in more primitive days the choice made the difference between life or death. The crises we meet today are unlikely to be so extreme, but however little the stress, it involves the same response. It is when such a reaction lasts long, through continued exposure to stress, that health becomes endangered. Such serious conditions as high blood pressure and heart disease have established links with stress. Since we cannot remove stress from our lives (it would be unwise to do so even if we could), we need to find ways to deal with it.21. People are finding less and less time for relaxing themselves because_____.A. they regard working as their greatest enjoymentB. they believe that work is superior to relaxationC. they are travelling fast all the timeD. they are becoming busier with their work than ever before22. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?A. We can find quite a few ways to avoid stressB. Stress is always harmful to people’s healthC. It is easy to change the habit of keeping oneself busy with work.D. Different people can withstand different amounts of stress23. In the last sentence of the passage, "do so " refers to ______.A. expose ourselves to stressB. find ways to deal with stressC. remove stress from our livesD. established links between diseases and stress24. According to the author, the right attitude toward stress is _______.A. to avoid itB. to try to cope with itC. to regard it as a vital motivationD.to find some relaxationBNEW YORK: New York on Thursday, 13 Sept, became the first city in the United States to enforce a limited ban on super-sized soda drinks blamed by Mayor Michael Bloomberg for fueling a national obesity crisis. The Board of Health's formal approval of the ban---proposed by Bloomberg and praised by health campaigners, but hotly opposed by soft drinks manufacturers—was not considered a surprise. The city health commissioner, Thomas Farley, called the vote "historic".However, Liz Berman, president of Continental Food and Beverage and head of the New Yorkers for Beverage Choices lobby group, described the "discriminatory ban" as a "fix"."It's sad that the board wants to limit our choices. We are smart enough to make our own decisions about what to eat and drink." she said in a statement. However, there is nothing to stop people from buying as much soda as they like by refilling smaller containers. Also, the ban does not extend to drinks sold in supermarkets or any dairy or fruit drinks, many of which also contain huge quantities of sugar.Diet and alcoholic drinks are also exempted. The measure, which could face legal challenges from the soft drinks industry, takes effect in six months.According to official statistics, some 6,000 people in New York die each year from obesity-linked problems. One in eight adult New Yorkers has diabetes, which can be worsened bysugar consumption.Boosting the mayor, the newly-built basketball stadium for the Brooklyn Nets announced it will immediately adopt the rules, well ahead of the March 12 deadline. The measure generated a stormy debate, including 38,000 comments written to the Board of Health. Polls showed a majority of people opposed the ban.25. Why does New York enforce the limited ban on super-sized soda drinks?A. Because it is believed that soda drinks are of harm to health.B. Because it is believed that soda drinks cause the nation overweight.C. Because too many people don't like drinking soda drinks.D. Because super-sized soda drinks block the sugar consumption.26. What can we infer from the passage about Liz Berman?A. She is in charge of the production of soda drinks all over the country.B. She is very angry that the city government limits what to eat and drink.C. She takes the limited ban on super-sized soda drinks as an unfair one.D. She is smart enough to know what she eats or drinks.27. The underlined word "exempted" means ________ in the 7th paragraph.A. relievedB. unfairC. upsetD. limited28. When will the limited ban be carried out according to the passage?A. This September.B. This November.C. The coming January.D. The coming March.CAustralia is the largest island in the world. Yet I did not know the real American society until I was hurt in a car accident because after the accident I had to see a doctor and go to court. After the accident, my roommate called a doctor for me. I was very grateful and decided to repay him one day. But the next day, he asked me to pay him $200 for what he had done. I was amazed. He had good reason to charge me, he said. And if I wanted to collect money from the person who was responsib le for my accident, I’d have to have a good lawyer. And only a good doctor can help me get a good lawyer. Now that he had helped me find a good doctor, it was only fair that I should pay him. But every day I went to see the doctor, I had to wait about 50 minutes. He would see two or three patients at the same time, and often stop treating one so as to see another. Yet he charged me $115 each time. The final examination report consisted of ten lines, and it cost me $215. My lawyer was all smiles the first time we met. But after that he avoided seeing me at all. He knew very well the other party was responsible for the accident, yet he hardly did anything. He simply waited to collect his money. He was so irresponsible that I decided torefuse his help. And he made me pay him $770.Now I had to act as my own lawyer. Due to my inexperience, I told the insurance company the date I was leaving America. Knowing that, they played for time and I left without getting a cent.My experiences taught me two things about America: firstly, in a country like America money is everything. It is more important than friendship, honor or professional morality. Secondly, foreigners are still being unfairly treated. So when we talk about America, we should see both its good and bad sides.32.
