I've never seen anything so tall in my whole life. We climbed through the trunk of one fallen tree that was bigger than our house. The park ranger said some Redwoods are over 2,000 years old! Can you imagine being that old of a tree? That's definitely older than sliced bread.After the Redwoods we just cruised home, already dreaming about our next big road trip. I had the best time seeing so many cool new places and trying new things like surfing. My little sister puked in the car twice from carsickness but she still had fun too (I think!).It's hard being cooped up in the car for that long, but we played lots of road trip games and listened to awesome music to pass the time. My favorite game is "Fortunately/Unfortunately" where you make up a story one word at a time. Unfortunately we ran out of snacks pretty quick so we had to stop for junk food way too often!I'll never forget that incredible trip across America. We made so many amazing memories as a family. Our country is so diverse and beautiful. There are still a million places I want to go and adventures I want to have. BIG WRITING - What is it?
'Big Writing' is an innovative approach to the teaching of the skills of writing. It is highly effective for pupils from K3 to J5, and has an immediate impact on writing standards.
There are three strands which involve:
1. Basic skills: grammar, handwriting, spelling and sentence structure.
2. Detail and story structure (openings, body and endings): who,
what, when, where, why, and finally, emotions and feelings
3. Writing voice - V ocabulary, C onnectives, sentence O peners and
P unctuation (VCOP).
VCOP - Vocabulary, Connectives, Openers and
Punctuation
The teaching of VCOP is one of the key strands of Big Writing.
VCOP is focused teaching of the following:
Vocabulary = teach a wide range of ‘wow' words, (ambitious vocabulary, which is age related);
Connectives = teach a wide range of words and phrases for connecting thoughts, ideas, sentences etc;
Openers = teach a wide range of ways of opening sentences, including sequence words, linking words and phrases and the 3 power openers: connectives, ‘ly' words and ‘ing' words;
Punctuation = teach a wide range of punctuation using the punctuation pyramid (example below)
During VCOP lessons, teachers will focus on different text types and structures, and prepare children for an independent writing session, Big Writing, when the children write independently and at length.
During these sessions children are required to work quietly on their own. Concentration is paramount and quiet music is often played. Big Writing also encourages children to proof read their own work and take responsibility for UP-LEVELLING their writing and improving it.
Punctuation Pyramid
The Punctuation Pyramid is a graphic representation of the range of punctuation used at each level of writing. Use of a full stop only is Level 1 in punctuation, a full stop and a question mark = Level 2 and so on. Teachers will praise children and encourage children to experiment with punctuation from lower tiers.
